I know this video is 6 yrs old, but i just found it and I wanna tell ya it was awesome. Been using a T5 for the last 8 yrs, off and on learning, seriously learning the last 2 yrs. I finally upgraded to the 5D MK IV and after being used to the T5 this was gonna be a very hard challenge learning all these old yet new to me features. Your 1 hour video did more for me than I could have done for myself in 6-8 months of self learning. For that I am truly thankful.

This was legitimately one of the most useful and concise videos I have seen on UA-cam for the 5D Mark IV. I have recently upgraded and felt as though I understood the mechanics of photography, but this REALLY helped solidify the mechanics of my camera, and helped me to understand how I can get it to work for me. THANK YOU!

I'm on a job with a fellow who has a bag full of great Canon EF lenses, and he said the 5D IV is the best DSLR Canon makes. I found a used one in good shape with a low price and found your video to help me get started. It was a good choice. VERY helpful information. You're a really smart guy! Thanks.

Hi, just a comment on exposure compensation on M mode: you can also adjust it by pressing the Q button and adjusting the desired compensation, without needing to change to another exposure mode (Av or Tv).

Wow.. best video ever on the EOS-5D mk.IV without any question .. even staff by Canon probably watch it when they forgot something ahah .. from the whole setup to your choice of words, everything is just damn clear & complete .. you just cancelled the need for at least 200 pages of documentation.. and I'm around photography or internet pre-2000 : I've seen a bunch !!
The only cons I could spot, as a European non-English native speaker, is that there's no subtitles option, not even automatic (I do not mean you should translate it ahah), and millions of people could benefit from this video.
Congrats & Thanks for this jewel !

When you talk about the focusing area selection, you describe using the M-fn button to cycle through those different focus area options. However, you don't mention (or maybe I missed it) that there is a new button introduced on the 5D IV that does the same thing. It is the "AF Area Selection Button" that is just below and to the right of the joystick. It's a little easier to find with your thumb than finding the M-fn button with your finger. Either will work, but that new button was added specifically for that purpose (likely due to user feedback requesting an easier way to to AF area selection.)

The rate button is really important and saved me a lot of time because my clients can choose the pictures they like on the field, so I can find them much much easier in Lightroom. I found the rate button on my Fuji X-t2 by pressing the Display Back Button which also made me happier.

Hi Tony! Thanks for the overview. It could be worth mentioning that the 5D4 have an inbuilt bulb timer too. So with the mode dial in B, you can go to same menu as interval timer. Tried it out on a 7D mk II and it works very well, just put the shutter on 2s timer to avoid the "initial shake" of hitting and releasing the shutter button.

  • @HibsMax
    @HibsMax 4 роки тому

I don't know if it's mentioned anywhere else in the comments, but back button focus disables Touch AF. You HAVE to press the AF-ON button (depending on your configuration) to focus. So with BBF enabled, you need to first touch the screen where you want to focus, then press the AF-ON button to actually focus. If you want to use Touch AF then you need to enable start AF on the Shutter button. That's a little annoying since it means jumping back and forth in the custom menus, but you can save three custom setups so maybe that's not really an issue.

I have owned this camera just over three months, theirs a very steep learning curve in using it, if you are willing to put in the time, the results are stunning. Love this camera, just sad that Canon will longer continue the 5D series. A mark V, would have been a awesome camera, Canon you should reconsider releasing it!

Just bought this Camera as a Christmas gift to myself. I was surprised to hear that GPS doesn't use that much battery on this camera. On my 6D GPS is a huge battery drain. I've not tried GPS on this camera yet, but will be happy if what you say (GPS not being a big battery drain) is true.

You make a good point about leaving the camera in AF Servo all the time, I'm going to give that a try, thanks.
I notice you wade through the menus to get to Exposure Compensation. All I do is hit the "Q" button and click the expo/comp in the window. From there I can either shift it up or down or set the bracket. This seems much easier than going on a function hunt.
Also are you aware the Canon 24-70mm f4 does have stabilization. It's cheaper as well. I find I can live with the f4 because I'm mostly outside with it anyway.

I love all your tips as well. I own a great kit, however out of all my lenses (I love them all), I would be heart broken without my Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro. Liveview uses electronic first curtain shutter which eliminates shutter vibration. Use liveview on a tripod instead of mirror lockup if you want to squeeze alittle extra sharpness out of an image. Also note that entering liveview counts as a shutter actuation so if you constantly go in and out of liveview it will rack up your actuations ;)

06:32 - Who deletes pictures *in camera* ??
I couldn't agree more about the *annoying focus beep* ! The first thing I do with a new camera is set it to use raw, turn off the focus beep, turn of the auto chimp playback, and set up back-button-focus.
53:06 - Using the asterisk button for a different focus setup is a great idea. I've read about it, but never set it up. I'll have to give it a try.
58:06 - If only Canon would offer Image Stabilization on the 16-35mm f/2.8!

Question about the Canon low-pass filter and the ability for the Canon 5D Mark IV to set the Lens abberation correction / diffraction correction to cancel the low-pass filter. My question is: how does the low-pass filter work? Is it a physical filter or a software filter? How well does the diffraction correction option work? Does it totally negate the low-pass filter? Should I leave this option on all the time if I am shooting landscape? When should I not use this option? Thanks Bill.

get this or the sony a7III? What I love about canon is the body, I shoot a lot of wildlife and landscape so I am outside a lot and I like the ruggedness and durability of the canon. Whereas with the sony the body seems less rugged and not being able to hold in extreme conditions such as rain.

Thanks so much for this video Tony! I really appreciate the breakdown of the settings on the 5D Mark IV. I currently own a 7d Mark II, but as I've switched to portrait photography in the past year, I'm looking to switch over to a full-frame camera so I don't have to back up as much and also the 5D Mark IV is sharper and more detailed. I've already got the 70-200mm f2.8L lens, so when I pair both of those up, I should get some terrific photos. Now I just have to take the plunge to make the purchase.

I have a Canon 430 EX RT speed-light. I would like to use it in a different position (off camera flash) w/ my 5D-M4. I was hoping this might link to my Speedlite 430EX III-RT and allow me to use my (single) flash wirelessly off-camera, without having to buy a radio transmitter or additional wireless flash. I've tried to set this up, but the link indicator on the flash is showing red (not connected) and I'm not sure if the camera is really capable of this mode of operation. I know this body equipped w/ wireless & NFC features but I'm confused that it can be use without a transmitter or not (like ST-E3-RT or YN-E3-RT).
When I went through the specs it confused me lot about it's wireless and radio ability on speedlight. The specs do include Radio transmission wireless flash shooting among the features, so I can see how you got that impression. But they also list Optical transmission wireless flash shooting despite the fact that the 5DmkIV doesn't have the built-in flash that would be necessary for optically triggering an off-camera Speedlite.
    downloads.canon.com/nw/camera/products/eos/5d-mark-iv/specifications/eos-5d-mark-iv-specifications-chart.pdf
Can you please help? Do I need to buy a ST-E3-RT transmitter?

If your tethering with a computer in a studio environment using strobe lights and using Capture One v.10 software, you will not need an SD or CF card inside the 5D Mk IV. You must remove it otherwise the Mk IV & Capture One will conflict with each other on were to store the image. Capture One stores the image directly into your computer and you will not the SD or CF cards inside the camera. I did not have a problem having the CF card inside my old Canon 5D Mk II with Capture One but this was a problem with the Mk IV.

Hi, I'm new to photography, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question. At about 21 minutes in are you saying that, If I select to write to both the CF card (slot 1) and the SD card (slot 2), the camera performance is limited by the performance of the slower card (the SD card) i.e. the the camera doesn't write to the CF Card first, then copy the data to the SD card when it is 'idle'. In other words, I would potentially get a slower shot rate from the camera by choosing to write to both the CF card and SD card compared with writing to just the CF card.

Did you know you can hit the Q button while navigating the menu?

Holy this made me cringe sooo much lol. Especially when he is going through the different modes and trying to press the touch screen. I don't even own this camera its just basic canon fundamentals isn't it?

If you were photographing a bride with white dress beside groom with black tux, would you go with the same metering mode, but bracket, and perhaps use highlight protection?

Hey Tony don't know if you look at comments from videos three years old and I know I'm being a grammar/pronunciation/usage nazi but regarding moving through a set of options it's IT-erate not EYE-terate but really I think it would make more sense if you said "cycle through" the setting options since when you get to the end of the available options it starts back at the first.

At around the 27 Minute mark you talk about AF Cases and say "by default they provide three different cases," then you say if any of those three cases don't meet your needs, you can scroll down even further and specifically configure Tracking Sensitivity, Accel./decel. tracking and AF pt auto switching." In point of fact there are 6 default cases, Case 1 through 6, all of which you can tweak those three settings.

Tony & Chelsea, I'm looking to purchase your books/training, however I can't find a comparison between streaming only and SD Card purchase, what is the difference?
    Thanks much,

    Nice video!
I tried on my 7d2, it has the same extreme customs controls for AF-on and the * button, but Tony it overrules the af lock of the shutter button. At least does on my 7d2 so i think the 5d4 does that too. I have my camera now on one shot always so my wife can shoot that moment when my little boy will take his first steps but when shooting wildlife or sports i use the back button but i do not change it in the camera if i keep on pressing the af-on button it keeps on tracking so it overrules the shutterbutton af lock

Why switch to Av or Tv to do exposure compensation in manual mode when you can customise the button to the right of the Q button to do it?.
