Sometimes it's nice to be able to apply a mask to its pixel layer and then remove it but AP doesn't currently have this function. One quick way is to make all the other layers invisible and then merge visible. A new layer without the mask is created.

Good thinking. Merge Visible does 'freeze' adjustment, but sometimes it's the expeditious thing to do.

I usually add separate mask layer to adjustment layers, that way I can easily copy it, remove it, duplicate it or use in compound mask. And also that approach gives me a possibility to compare adjustment layer with or without the mask, which is NOT possible with built-in mask - you can't switch them off temporarily.

That sounds reasonable and I sometimes do it too. You can also access and copy mask data from adjustments via the Channels tab.

I'm not sure why I'd ever want to do that? Can you explain how/when it might help?

When I have multiple images in the same location I'll process one and copy the layers to the other images. If a layer from the first image has a mask then I often need to redo the mask or remove the mask for each of the other images. This is much quicker than the process that I've used.

If you are as daft as I am you can spend time adding and adjusting a mask on the wrong layer (wondering why your mask is not doing what you expected). If this layer is one you previously did a lot of work on you would not want to delete it. I have done this more than once.
