      Awwww God Bless your heart you bought back so many memories of my mom may she R.I.P. How you r removing the stems by pulling the greens off😃😃😃My mom & aunts use to do it like that all the sisters together cleaning greens and chittlings.     I haven't seen collard greens like that since my mama had her garden they look beautiful. You guys go out there and pick them collard greens Sunday dinner after our daddy died my mama raised 13 kids they passed away at the age of 91 I miss my mama think about you everyday lady I hear you I feel you I miss you I love you forever and thank God for choosing me to be one of your daughters love you mama

    Suggestion when freezing your greens: Remove stems, stack them, roll and cut them, place them in the water and vinegar. (Vinegar kills bugs and the dirt seems to removes off faster because the greens are cut. Rinse them in clean water then place greens into the blanching pot for 1-2 minutes, and into the iced water to get shocked and drained for freezer bags. I hope you find these steps helpful for you.

      What would happen if someone put them in a freezer without closing them up ? Like left them open. 🤦🏻‍♀️I asked my boyfriend to do ONE thing and he put them in the freezer open ! And still in the bag from the store. And today I saw they had a few white spots on it and I’m scared if I cook them they won’t taste fresh or good.

    I blanch my collards (even when not freezing) SPOON them into a colander & then cook in a small amount of well seasoned water. I don’t pour the water back over the greens. If you do,whatever dirt you got rid of goes right back on. Not only are your greens super clean, Blanching takes away some of the bitterness and ensures there’s no sand. My mom didn’t teach me to blanch. I learned this from a friend. Once I saw that sand in the pot, I was convinced. I love your videos & your spirit!😊

      Hmmmm. I get it. Once you get them cleaned up you don’t want to get dirty water back on them. I’m pretty thorough. Can’t stand grit on my greens. Yuck!

    I'm the oldest of 10 children, I'm so glad I watched my Mother and Grandmother cook. You really take your time to show what you are doing, I really appreciate it, and I will be trying the things you showing us. ( Oh yeah I'm the cook of my family.😊

    Thank You for sharing this! My grandmother passed away before I learned how to can and put up fresh vegetables 😢. My mama was too busy working to teach me how. So, now that the powers that be are poisoning our food, I’m trying to learn how to get back to the way our ancestors lived. They were a lot wiser than most people of today! Knowledge is rampant but Wisdom is more valuable than Gold! May The One True Living God show Favor & Mercy on all who see this!

    My Uncle brought me over a big bunch of collards. I wanted to know how to freeze them and you were the first one that came up on you tube to show me how to do this. I love how you go through the whole process. Thank you for showing a country girl a better way to freeze her collards.     Yes as you prepare your water for cleaning put some white table salt in the water and that will kill any bugs the greens might have.

    I have been freezing all types of greens for years. I wash and rinse several times to get clean, let drain and then tear them up and put in freezer bags. Stack in freezer and when I am ready to cook just put them in the pot and cook till done with all my seasonings and meat. Always good and simple-taste like fresh greens.

    I agree with freezing and preserving food. It's not only cost efficient it's also time efficient. Homemade is always best. My mom showed me that. I appreciate your detailed, natural cooking style. Brings back good memories. Thank you for sharing.

      A for effort because some ppl wouldn’t even bring them home because they would be afraid to try! We decided to grow us a little patch of greens even though we didn’t know to put em up. Figured we could learn as we go. So far so good!😂

    OmG, those greens are so beautiful!!! Big green leaves ... Shoutout to the grower. He did a wonderful job growing those greens ... never quite seen them like that!!! I'm amazed!!! they do look like a bushel of flowers.

    Thank you! I needed to see this video and I'm so glad you did it live and explained every little step. I watched a 3-minute video before I happened upon this and I didn't understand. I needed to see and hear all of the steps and understand their purpose. My mother taught me how to cook greens, but I grew 3 of those beautiful bundles of greens in my new garden from seedlings and I didn't want them to go to waste. Now they won't! Thank you again!

    Love collards! I steam them or stir fry with other veggies and beans. Tonight it was collards, chard, beets, celery, mushroom, and carrots with black beans simmered in a large stainless steel fry pan

    I use a salad spinner to drain the water and dry it but still transfer it to i cookie sheet with paper towels. GREAT VIDEO

    Hi Denise,this is my first time watching your channel. I pretty much do mine the same way only I put salt in my wash water and I use a cutting board and a knife to cut them up. I cool mine to room temp. Now I know about the ice water bath. Thank you very much. I’ve always heard that you’re never to old to learn! I’ve enjoyed hanging out with you. I will be watching more of your channel.

      Hi Georgie, thank you so much for stopping by. The cutting board is a good idea but I like holding them in my hand and cutting them with a scissors or knife. It just gets it done easier for me. Yes…the water bath is such a big help to stop the cooking right away. Girl, I’m always learning new things and I love it. We gotta keep learning or where are we?

    Collards are my favorite green. I could eat them every day with my cornbread. TY for sharing this with us. Valuable teaching right here for those who weren't taught like we were.

      Mine too! I like turnips too, but collards are my favorites. Now kale is really good in bean soup. Have you tried it that way?

      Hi Colleen, yes, yes, yes. Now is the time. I've got some coming in too but not quite ready for harvesting but almost! I'm glad you found this useful. One other thing...the old folks say to wash the greens in salt water first just in case there are any bugs on them. I take care of bugs as shown but thought I'd share "their" thoughts.

    I dehydrate collards and store them in bags .they cook up very well and so convenient!

    We love collards and grow them year round. In the winter we grow them indoors in a closet sized greenhouse with grow lights. I use the stems two different ways because nothing goes to waste. The tender parts of the stem can be pickled. The rest can be diced and frozen to add to soups or stir fries. Collards are just a variety of cabbage that doesn't form a head.

      Thank you! I was wondering how I can use the stems. Another thing I do is let the boiled water cool down and use it to water the plants so they get all the nutrients back

      @@kccarnage4105 That's a good idea. We end up using any liquid in a soup. It's good to have other uses for what might be considered discardable.

    OOOO! I planted 6 collard green plants, just so I could cook up a small batch for myself when I wanted some (no-one else in m y house eats them) and they have done SO well, and I didn't want any of it to go to waste, so this video is perfect for me! And, you even mentioned cooking them in an Instapot! I don't use that thing very much, but I would for these!

      I have to tell you I tried them in the Instant Pot and they were delicious. You might try the Forking Life...she shows how to cook them in the Instant Pot and they taste amazing.

    I shred mine and throw them on a hot iron skillet for about 5 minutes w a few bulbs of garlic then a dash of hot sauce. Can’t imagine cooking them for hours. Gonna have to try that. Thank you for showing me how to freeze them. I have a giant bunch and can’t eat them all.

    I’m new to eating collard greens. So, I appreciate your fabulous cooking & freezing techniques to preparing these hearty nutritious leaves. PS. I had same conversation with doctor. After 3 months of a Whole Foods plant based diet I lost 30 lbs. Now I am on a maintenance diet, where I eat a balanced diet with small portions of meat a few times a week.     Great Job. I cut the rolled up greens with a chef knife, on my cutting board. For me...cutting with scissors is working hard, not smart. I learned that from professional chefs on tv. Just saying, cuz I'm 76 years young! Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you, Sis.

    I am cleaning mine with baking soda. I'm gonna rinse them and try the vinegar. Also I want to blanch and freeze them.
    So that's why I'm on here. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

      Baking soda will certainly work and so does the vinegar. It just helps to get rid of all that grit.

      baking soda softens water that helps grit fall away; vinegar kills mostly all the surface bacteria

    Yes, I love callard greens, I got them growing in the garden, they will grace our dinner table for thanksgiving, we also have turnups alot of turnups, sometimes I use bacon and other times I use ham hocks, there both so good. I also put a few pinches of hot pepper flakes.

    you can cut the stem and the leaves and cook them in olive oiliin frying pan salt n pepper little garlic very good and you save lots of greens enjoycook until tender

    I rinse mine in salt water - from the garden. Takes care of the bugs without chancing the taste of vinegar. I do the same with cabbage and other cole crops.

    My mother taught me to use baking soda to clean collard greens and cold water when you use baking soda all the dirt and grit falls to the bottom of the sink! But of course I wash them several times in Coldwater!

    I use the stalks too. I clean them m cut off a lil of the big end. I then cut in 1/2 inch slices. I can them in pressure canner with 1/2 tsp salt per pint jar and 1 tsp of beef bouillon powder per pint jar. Then when I want them I pour bouillon off but reserve it. I fry stems with a lil butter and bacon. After frying them I put them in instant pot with pepper and one cubbed onion. I also add 1/2 tsp of turmeric cause it healthy an add the juice that was reserved. Cook for 15 min on high or I use meat setting on mine. These can also be added to soupe and the juice used for cooking rice and adding stems to rice with pepper cumin and thyme. Delicious

      @@homemakingwithdenise I tend to steer away from making greens because I am impatient, but if I make a big batch like you and freeze them the right way, then I am more likely to eat them since it is just popping them in the microwave! :-)

      Artsy Cupcake I’m going to do an Instant Pot collard greens. Supposedly you can do this in 25 minutes! We’ll see.
