Also, if you were to go that route, I would also reccomend getting a clip on stock bell (cow bell) for her head colllar (halter) - Fellow Stock Packer + Rough country person

    That's so cool I baught my horse to start endurance in Ireland but he was only turning 3 when I got him when he was 5 I spent the whole winter getting him fit for a 10km ride so had him out the night before the ride I went up to feed him at 7pm by 9pm when my husband got off the train he couldn't see him in the field when he called me I said he's there somewhere I still didn't panic because kids had let him out before but the gate was still locked he went to the bog before so I started the search rang the council who could have found him ..in the light if day I found the broken fence and tire marks of what looked like a box been backed in he had been bated after I fed him someone else had been going in after and moving his food but putting the bucket back they backed the box trough the wooden fence and loaded him up that was 3 years ago taken on his bday the same day I bought him we've never heard or seen him again so I won't buy another if I can't keep them safe on my own land pity because I have bog between kildare that could get me as far as athlone without crossing any huge roads and the curragh to ride on ...he'd be 8 now God nearly 9 next month so it's 4 years always taught he would be found his breeding has great racehorse so he shouldn't have been hard to find ...

    This is great. I want to do a couple of nights in the Highlands early next summer (before all the midgies etc. So it isn't so uncomfortable!).) My sister has been taking the horse out on long treks on our own property (we were lucky to have been left a fair bit of woodland and over the last few years she has laid out trekking paths that mean we can stay away from traffic altogether. I was wondering about camping too and we will maybe see if our Shetland pony will carry the gear as she would hate to be left alone and it would keep her occupied (She is the naughtiest pony ever!)and she will feel like she has an important job to do (psychological warfare!)It's beautiful where you are and it isn't too different from where we live but we are not so near the sea. I would love to take them to the beach but alas it's out of our way. I hope you are continuing to have a lovely time with Flora.

      Yes, and we even have one. But I find the saddle I use sooo comfortable. I am used to the shape of it, too. In a western saddle, I'd miss the 'cushions' under your knees that give your legs extra support.

    English saddle? Big mistake. Go western! Western gear is better & designed for this kind of an adventure

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  7 років тому +7

      I would suggest that this is a question of preference, and not a question about
      right or wrong. I've tried both sorts many times. My English saddle is very tough and extremely comfortable and
      fits my horse well. Western gear is not easily available here in Ireland. As you
      know, English horse gear has its origin as practical and effective equipment
      for the army and long-distance riding (before the age of cars and train), so the
      rider’s and horse’s comfort and safety was a priority in designing it.

    • @richardschroepfer5357
      @richardschroepfer5357 7 років тому

      Preference yes, but also beyond that, A western saddle is more secure. built more for brush. Stastics shows it more safe, secure,. Either that or try a Mc Clean., a cavalry saddle.

    • @ratherbwithhorses
      @ratherbwithhorses 7 років тому

      Way Out West Blow-in blog yes ride what's most comfortable and the lighter weight is an advantage too.

    • @markwarnberg9504
      @markwarnberg9504 6 років тому

      It is a quastion of Comfort for the horse and preventing tired muscles and saddle sores. The Blade saddle design like the Western, Endurance and Military Saddles will distribute the weight over a larger area thus minimizing muscle fatigue. The other advantage is that saddle bags and gear are more easly mounted.
