Speaking of being like making batter, here's a PRO TIP from a baker, we typically make cake batter by weighing the dry in a bowl then adding the wet, this makes less lumps and is easier to make a smooth gesso!

May I recommend starting with less (perhaps 1 cup instead of 1.5) distilled water and then add everything else. That way you can add more of the water until desired consistency is reached. I just feel that’s a better option instead of adding more calcium carbonate. If you somehow add too much water and it’s too thin, you could then add a touch more CC until it’s right. :-)

I followed this recipe using calcium carbonate and my gesso came out very chalky, very absorbent base. It begins to lift off the canvas when I apply any amount of water or water down paint. Any suggestions what I've done wrong? It's quite a mess and not a good surface to paint on.

Hi Clive. I've never been taught to use gesso, was told to wet the canvas!!! Now I know that's a terrible thing to do, I'm trying to make my own gesso, I bought johnstones white matte house paint & Pva , can I use bicarbonate soda or baking soda instead of the chalk?

I often need gesso as a primer for projects that need to be wet sanded. I have that using a water-based polyurethane finish as a binder works well for this. It has been my experience that the acrylic gesso sold in stores cannot be sanded. It clogs the sandpaper.

Hi Clive, thanks for all your tips! I really like your videos. I've got a question, does this homemade gesso ever go off? Also I've seen the other video where you make clear gesso and you used a powder with three ingredients. Would this work just the same if I only used the calcium carbonate and no white paint added?

Why would you want a bright white gesso when you know you will tone the canvas before painting. A toned gesso wouldn't make more sense?. I'm new to this. Just wondering...

    • @CLIVE5ART

Yes texture paste is basically acrylic resin with marble dust but I have made a good paste with pva and cc add the pva slowly to the cc make sure to get rid of lumps or you could use tile adhesive but take care it could crack that’s why marble dust is used it’s more stable

White does gesso have to be white? Why I as is because alot of the time people stain a canvas/board before starting a painting. So why not cut out the middleman and make the gesso a neutral stain colour, by mixing in a little burnt umber.

I thought Plaster of Paris was calcium carbonate, and I'm pretty sure that's mainly what it is. BUT, I made some gesso using it and it was very thick using your amounts. I used some of it right away and I think it was ok, but I've never even seen "real" gesso so not sure. Anyway, just looked at my sealed container with what was left and it is solid. Hmm...

In the US, Calcium carbonate is sold as hydrated lime or whiting. It is also sold in grocery stores as pickling lime. I don't know if your British chalk is exactly the same, but you don't want to breathe much of the dust, because it is caustic. Plaster of Paris is calcium sulfate (gypsum) that is heated to a high temperature to drive the water trapped in the mineral out, then ground into a powder. When you add the powder to water, it combines with the water, crystalizes and becomes solid. Over here, we call calcium carbonate lime, and what we call chalk is sticks of hardened plaster of Paris used for drawing on a blackboard or sidewalk..
