  • In this video, I will show beginners two recipes for homemade gesso, using A) baby powder and B) plasters of Paris. Here is a comparison of the two gessoes. You can decide which one you like.
The numbers indicate the mixing ratio. Instead of using a tablespoon, you can use a large container to make more gesso.
    Two recipes;
    A) Gesso with baby powder
    3 * Baby Powder
    1 * PVA glue
    1 * White Acrylic paint
    1 * water *Tbsp
    B) Gesso with plaster of Paris
    1 * plaster of Paris
    1 * PVA glue
2 * White Acrylic paint *Tbsp
I used these two gessoes to compare the surface preparation.
Both gessoes give a nice texture to the cardboard. Each gives grip to the subsequent processing. The baby powder gesso is smoother to the touch.
When applying the gesso, the colors of the acrylic paints are more vibrant. The texture of both can be controlled by sanding.
Gesso of plaster of Paris will not swell the cardboard as much.
Both can be stored in a capped container for several months.

    for anyone wondering:
corn starch and baby powder tend to be chalky and can v easily flake off of glossy surfaces. like cracking. one way to mitigate this is to add glycerin to counter the chalkiness.
cheapest way to make high quality gesso is to use house paint, which is acrylic based even tho it's erroneously called "latex"; then add the plaster. you don't need glue, pigment or other fillers.
the paint itself is acrylic based and it has the pigment, and the plaster adds tooth and is more whitening.
im an immunobiochemist so i did experiments on all these raw materials. none of then come close to house paint + marble dust (no added whitening) or house paint + Plaster of Paris or calcium carbonate, aka chalk (more whitening)

Thanks for this invaluable tip. Can emulsion paint be used instead of latex paint?

@@shaheenmiranda5349 no. gesso is acrylic based and acrylic is hydrophilic (water loving) and oils are hydrophobic (water hating). the fact that acrylic dries to touch with 30 mins n cures over ~48 hrs means you can create a barrier on canvas and papers from getting oils through.
it defeats its purpose if you use an emulsion paint, where it contains oils as well.

This is quite old video and hope that you see this, what is the ratio for house paint and plaster of paris? Is it the same as with any of the other recipes. I have seen painters use house paint in art work, as part of their primary colors.
