We have restarted the Worlds of Speculative Fiction lecture/discussion series in a new online monthly format. Each session will have a roughly 90-minute video (this one is longer, though!), which will be premiered (allowing chat interaction between viewers and myself). Then immediately following that, we will have a Zoom videoconferencing session, where we'll continue the discussion.
This session focuses on the fantasy writer, R. Scott Bakker, and on the third book of his Prince of Nothing Trilogy, The Thousandfold Thought. We discuss some of the reviews and Bakker's responses, the narrative universe of his stories, and several philosophical themes of that third and final book of the trilogy, particularly the theme of endings.

Loved this episode. Cnaiur with the skin spies has some fascinating stuff. Thank you for pointing out Esmenet's revelations while reading the Saga's. Such a great worldbuilding sequence which also connects her back to Achamian and his dreams. We can see him through her eyes in that moment of self reflection... Akka...
Yes, Bakker is really something else - or rather someone else
Your speculative fiction videos are amazing. Bakker, Dick, Herbert, they all deserve recognition by the literary establishment. Would love to see a video talking about Gene Wolfe.
...the four books that follow. hmm. Please consider tackling the Aspect-Emperor with your learned commentary. There is a lot of meat on those bones and well deserving the attention both as a work of art and philosophy. I've been a big fan of this series on Speculative Fiction for awhile now but I think these last three lectures to be my favorites, I really dig a philosopher dishing this up. I was going to say for you to cover the next four books would be a fitting monument to a greatly neglected series, but monuments are to remember dead things and the fact that we are talking about them here means these books are very much alive and I want to thank you for bringing them to my attention.
I've spent 3 months on this. I've got a lot of other authors and series to get to next
@@GregoryBSadler Maybe its time to double down and do two episodes of Speculative Fiction a month! lol Just joking, I know your a busy man and I appreciate all your content. I've just become fascinated with these books, R. Scott Bakker, the internet war he fought with the alt-right and the radical feminist when the were published, the after life of these books(personally I feel like an old cynical prospector suddenly finding a wide vein of pure gold), and finally speculating what he might be writing or not. Again thank you for covering these.
Fantastic exploration of the first few books! Looking forward to the next!
hey doc just wanted to thank you for all your content.. makes my day everyday.. you are truly making a difference for a lot of us... just thanks so much for your hard work and integrity with all the works and schools of thought you cover🙏 ... I know you like stay humble... but on the wicka wicka wild wild web.... I think you might be doing the greatest service to mistress philosophy on a mass scale...Nobody is pumping out this quality of instruction day in and day out..... I think your 2 full pots of coffee are paying off lol... have a great rest of your weekend.... Peace doc 🖖 may the force be with you...
Thanks - and the 2 pots of coffee are pretty much just to keep me going!
I doubt you'll have time for it anytime soon but I found reading about the Aspect Emperor to be a lot more interesting than reading about the Prince of Nothing. One day, when you are running out of content, that would definitely be something worth examining. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I enjoyed it.
Hahaha! I don’t imagine that ever running out of content. It’s more the opposite!
@@GregoryBSadler Ha! Perhaps I could amend my statement to "inspiring content". Though I suspect that still wouldn't lead to any amendment in your response. Also a minor clarification, I meant the Great Ordeal as a whole, not just the Aspect Emperor. Anyways, keep at it. You've earned a new sub from me!
@@GregoryBSadler I cannot wait for your breakdown of his follow up series. I loved the next set of books as much as the original trilogy.
What a magical analysis thank you so much. I would love to hear thoughts on the aspect emperor.
I think he's a terrifying guy
Amazing work man. Instantly subscribed
Thanks
Thanks for these great talks, are you going to similar lectures for Aspect Emperor? Hope so.
Perhaps down the line
I just finished the prince of nothing trilogy for the first time and absolutely loved it. This lecture series seems great, thanks you, but I have just paused it at 7:19 when you start talking about the foreshadowing for the Aspect Emperor series, is there there spoilers for those books in this video? If so I will have to come back to it when i have finished the entire second apocalypse series
I don’t remember. I’ve shot several hundred videos since then
Such a fantastic review... I wish it lasted at least double! Thank you very much! I know it would be the slog of slogs, but I hope someday you'll treat us with your thoughts on The Aspect Emperor.
Well, you put all three videos on the first trilogy together and you've got about 5 hours or so!
@@GregoryBSadler any plans on doing the second series? I watched all of episodes, the series about bakker is one of my favorites!
@@peternewman9606 If I did, it would be a good bit down the line. Lots of others to get to
