Serwe was pregnant before her and Khellas coupled. She was just in denial the whole time. Khellas and Cnaiur of course knew this also, that it was Cnaiur's. Khellas tells this to Serwe in tdtcb if I recall, when she says to him that she is carrying his child. But it was one quick line by Khellas, so easy to miss. He basically says something along the lines of 'but that can't be Serwe as we have not yet coupled'

What an ending... Bakker truly is a master of the craft.
I'm definitely going to read Aspect-Emperor (probably later this year/early next) but I might have to re-read this first. Love that ending!

The Heron Spear is such an amazing artifact, based on the spear of Longinus in real history - basically a Warhammer 40k lascannon in a medieval setting! 😯

Another favorite video. I like how you have embraced Bakker's style. You know he is not going to give all the answers. And when he answers he also births questions. I am glad you enjoy that. There are readers who want everything explained. Bakker is not that way. He challenges you and I massively enjoy that. The dreams of Achamian work that way. The meeting of Moenghus with Kellhus and Cnaiur is such a moment. The Thousandfold Thought( to achieve the absolute result?) is such a concept. And yes, somehow, through all these unreliabale narrating and confusion Bakker makes you even more attached to these characters. Cnaiur the finest example. His part with Moenghus or the Skin Spy protecting him broke me too.
I also agree with you about Proyas. His character is always building. I dont want to spoil things but he is probably the character I feel more in the saga. His journey is long and grim.
And man, just you describing that final confrontation of Achamian with the new status quo gave me goosebumps. I envy you for getting to the Aspect Emperor having no idea what follows :D

Just wanted to say thank you Mark for promoting this series. It took me awhile to read it finally, so I've had this video queued up for a year or so. 😊 I am really enjoying Bakker's take on fantasy. There are so many layers here. I can see why people re-read this series. Can't agree more with you on that bad ass 🎤 drop ending.

Another great video! Better get ready for Aspect Emperor though. Bakker is about to take the grimdarkness, magic, and lore to a new level.
I was actually one of those readers who was pretty salty with this book when I first read it because things didn't go they way I hoped they would, and because I wanted more from the ending. Also, I thought it was the end of the series, so I was super butthurt until I found out about Aspect Emperor. For me, The Thousandfold Thot is still the weakest in the series, but The Whiteluck Warrior is a huge improvement, and each subsequent book just gets better from there. Anyway, love the long let's talk format, and can't wait for the next video. Oh, and fully expecting Bakker to sweep the Grimmys next year now that I know what the categories are.

Thanks for these spoiler talks. I share your enthusiasm for this series and it helps make sense of some of the more confusing parts, I just finished Prince of Nothing series and am on page 144 of Judging Eye, which is definitely my favorite of the larger series so far. I love the change of tone that is also so consistent w the larger story, Cheers.

Fantastic reviews and format! When I came across this series for the first time I immediately knew it was something special, and I still reread or re listen to sections of the audiobooks every few months. Your excitement and questions has been infectious, I cant wait to finish an unrelated book and then dive back into TSA.
I also love that you mentioned Esme reading through the Saga's. That section really ties in the past, present and future for the series and grounds everything so well. The Second Apocalypse just feels so damn real. Seeing you post new videos for the series is a great way to start the day

I completely agree with this comment :) I remember the moment I realised I was hooked on this shit.. It was when Cnaiur was dangling off Kellhus's arm on the Jiunatti Steppe in TDTCB. Wow.
And the second part - Yes. It sounds daft, but I feel like if sorcery and gods and rapey-space-demons were a thing, then this is 100% how it would be. Love it.

Another suggestion, and I'm sure people will jump on here and completely disagree with me, which is fine!
The Unholy Consult has two short stories at the back, after the glossary, which I would recommend reading before you read The Great Ordeal and TUC. They were both released before TGO, and I think they add a lot of flavour that makes TGO and TUC both more interesting and give them a slightly different perspective than if they were read in the non-publishing date order. I'm not going to give any spoilers here at all in case you or others don't want to know, but False Sun, particularly, was excellent and should probably be read after the White-Luck Warrior.
    Just my opinion :)

    • @Red21Viper
      @Red21Viper 3 роки тому +1

I agree. Reading the False Sun is not spoiling things. On the contrary it gives much insight on the backbone of the story.

my understanding is that the 'Thousandfold Thought' is the same as the 'shortest path' , and is basically the Golden Path from dune ie 'an optimum path through the countless threads of cause and effect that were encountered by the human race.' I think essentially its the path to take to overcome and control the beliefs of the nations of men, usurp legitimacy through being seen as divine and then unify them for one specific purpose, guided by the one who has achieved the Absolute which, by meaning you are not controlled by anyone, seems to imply you must be controlling all circumstance. Moengus needs Kellhus because Moengus does not have the power to do this as the Cishaurim Psukhe, reliant on passion, is almost useless to him. However, Moengus idea of TTT and Kellhus are likely very different because Moengus did not become convinced of the realness of the divine like Kellhus has. He never had any experience that 'God' itself was speaking to him. As this goes against the Dunyain philosophy of the logos, pure logical cause and effect, he assumes Kellhus is thus mad. Before that He assumed Kellhus would fall in line and help Moengus with his plan to achieve his view of TTT. I would assume that since he believes Kellhus has followed this path up to the moment he arrives at the meeting, that Moengus likely planned to continue with the same sort of shenanigans - Kellhus becomes an uber powerful wizard-prophet and gain more influence using his Zaudunyani followers.

I know I read something good but I'm really not sure how I feel about the trilogy, as a trilogy. There's a lot of stuff I could gush about but on a basic plot level each book felt a little unsatisfying due to how much of the resolution is rolled over to the next book and, in the case of thousandfold thought, the next series. I almost wish I'd never been told prince of nothing was a trilogy. In any case I'm suspending any judgement until I finish the aspect emperor books. I should start those tomorrow. The eventual reread for this is going to hit different.

Something I haven’t seen people theorize on yet. Cnauir has no passing memory of his assault on Conphas. There’s a few explanations for this within the text.
It fits the general description of madness in the story, but I don’t think that’s what it is. As most of Cnauir’s violent moments seem to be remembered later. We see Aurang possess Esmenet later in this same book; and yet she has a complete recollection of the events. Could this be Ajokli or Gilgaol interfering?
Cnauir might have been pushed in that direction by more than just Kellhus and the Synthese.

Great video! I can't wait to get your thoughts on the Aspect Emperor. Shit is about to get real. What is past is prologue :)
A note on the sorcery: the language they use is a variant of the Nonmen tongues, to enable them to focus on the meaning rather than the words. They recall the *voice* of the God (rather than use the *language* of the God as you suggest, which isn't a thing). In contrast to the Cishaurim, who recall the *passion* of the God.

Hello I didn't like this trilogy and had the hardest time finishing it. I didn't buy in to Kellhus's powers of manipulation and between that and his fighting abilities found him to be quite the Mary Sue. The magic users never used the magic to reinforce there power which I found frustrating. Over all IMO and overly complicated story for what is basically a medieval crusade story with a Jesus like leader.
You deliver good reviews though so thumbs up

Fiinshed this book last nite. Loved the series & can't wait to continue. This book took too long a time to get going for me even tho the ending is epic yet confusing.
This video was great as it answers some questions. But, I'm still confused about one part. Akka fights the demon, loses, and then the demon takes him to the beach instead of killing him? Then, he walks all that way back the Shimeh just to tell everyone to stick it & walks away again?

    • @slowlyred2082

If I remember correctly, Achamian loses to the ciphrang but wounds it badly in the process.
I believe the ciphrang was either trying to kill Achamian, or bring him back to Iyokas. But because of its injury it had to basically ditch the plan and return to the outside.
Now I'm not 100% that this is what happened. Bakker can leave you wondering, for sure

  • @hopeprevails3213

This book disappointed me. Loved the complexity and depth of plot and storylines in the first two... honestly here all this is pretty much lost. Most of Thousandfold Thought is centered around the Achamian/Kellhus/Esmenet drama. People just smash whole essays on religion in your face as soon as they open their mouths. I usually don't mind that, but holy shit, am I reading a fantasy crusade or an analysis on God?
Almost nothing happens until like the last 50 pages. The army just kinda moves to Shimeh and everyone is licking Kellhus' boots becuase he is OP. Eleazaras is drunk, complains about life for 98% of the book. Wtf happened to the imperial family, court, to Proyas and the other factions of the war, to the Schools? Why we never receive the perspective of the other side of the war, we just know the Consult love to fuck.
We read mostly about Kellhus and Esmenet, or Achamian being constantly depressed.
Also the whole plot about Cnäiur, Conphas and all this high on crack shit with the Serwë clone was misshandled imo, it should've been given more screentime, a lot more. The batrle at Jokhta deserved to be explored more as well, it just kinda came and went for like 15 pages.
Are the Consult porn addicts or what? Weird race. Maithanet deserved SO MUCH more screentime. Eh, it is what it is.
Still, I enjoyed the book a lot, mostly because of the philosophy. I gave it 6/10. The ending was very good. I'll continue with Aspect-Emperor at some point for sure.

When you say nothing happened before the last 50 pages... that not the case. They start to capture and interogate the Skin-Spies, the Emperor is assassinated, with Conphas taking over, Khellus orders the slaughter of 4/10 of a city, as part of his ruse with the Holy War. Esmenet has a whole arc as the spy master, Cnaiur beats and rapes Conphas, joins forces with the Consult, including multiple scenes with Aurang and then Serwe's clone...Consult possesses Esmenet against Khellus, Consult also tries to assasinate Achamian. Proyas takes over the care of Zin, who dies... there's a lot that happens in this book that isn't just at the end. But the end of the book IS crazy...
