- Can we shoot a film without any lighting equipment or tripods, just a Nikon Z6?
#Nikon #ad
This week we're going behind the scenes of the pre-production process of my next indie short film, as well as documenting the first day of the filming. The challenge this time was to shoot a short film with the Nikon Z6 (www.nikonusa.c.... No tripods, filters, sliders, or even lighting equipment, just me holding the camera (and the Atomos Ninja recorder).
PLEASE NOTE: 12-bit RAW video capture is coming in a future firmware update

You are my favorite of all the filmaking UA-camrs. Appreciate your humbleness and sharing. I have learned soo much from you over the years. Thanks again.
Are you brit or American coz you said zee instead of zed at 0:55
You probably dont give a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of days =)
@Jaylen Yousef Yup, been watching on instaflixxer for since december myself =)
This dude talks in lowercase
man i missed this type of videos from Simon. Love the style and vibe of it. Excited for part 2 already.
nobody cares
@@truls5662 That's your opinion
Lovin' in.
WHY I WON'T BUY A NEW CAMERA (222nd edition) Note from Simon's Grandkids: Simon has died and I have inherited the T3i
Uh, what??
Made me chuckle
@@kush6465 same
😂😂😂😂😂
Solid gold comment. You have won the internet for me today.
It's not breaking a "no buying" rule if you get a camera for free lol
Awesome video as always
rams right 😂
Legend has it Simon's Canon T3i is still recording B-roll somewhere.
Awesome challenge from Nikon. It's crazy how after all that prep. that you've still got to go with your gut on some things. That's what makes filmmaking fun and stressful at the same time. Good luck with the project! I'm looking forward to seeing the commercial you'll have made on a serious budget.
😂😂exactly
Jesse B. I just bought a t3i. Is it a good camera for a beginner? I want to make a short film.
Oh man I could listen to you for hours, I LOVE this insight. THANK YOU!
Just a camera ... and a monitor ..aaand a hdmi cable...aaaaaand sound equipment
Yep. Video recorder. Money to rent a place and actors. He kindda only filmed without the tripod.
Ummm... lights?
@@arikhess8320 there were no lights on his short he did
This was amazing man. Thanks for the upload and hard effort
Literally just searched 'Filmmaking' on UA-cam and then got a notification from my favourite channel on the site 👌
I am currently working on a short film myself so watching your process really helps me learn from your mistakes and experiences. I appreciate this video Simon. Thank you.
Best of luck with your short film!
@@ThinkingArtEntertainment thanks alot!
When it will come out?
@@krabisvalis by the end of may bro! Would appreciate if u watch it! Updates on my channel if u wanna follow. 👍
I'm very thankful that I've found your channel years ago Simon. All the lesson and focus on the story has made me a better filmmaker and photographer.
Nothing but appreciation and love for your work Simon. Without you, I wouldn’t have progressed as a filmmaker as much as I have. You’ve been a constant reminder on how beautiful art can be and really helped grow my love and appreciation for the love of filmmaking. Glad I found you three years ago!
This guy needs to start a podcast. His voice is so relaxing
Panicking is a big part of directing/production, and yet you make everything seem so easy and smooth. You're always such an inspiration and a motivator.
I remember my first steps into the video making world, with your guide and some others. And now I'm at a high level in media work class in my country. Still live to watch your videos, because it inspires. Can't thank you enough
Your voice is so relaxing. It's crazy. Never heard a soft voice like that in a man.
Brilliant work, can't wait for part two. Really nailed the music and tone of this behind the scenes look... So many document their process but it's annoying to watch because of how poorly the process is explained, or how little effort went into it. Learned more in these 6 mins than I have in the past 10 years.
Absolutely love these kind of videos where you actually see what's going on, can't wait for the next part!
Good stuff mate. Always shocked at how hard filmmaking is with every new project. Glad to know it’s not just me. Keep grinding homie.
Super helpful for aspiring filmmakers like myself to see how more experienced filmmakers do it, and roll with the punches, and I love the style of the video!
Finally You Got A New Camera❤🔥
Great feeling ever :)
man thank you for telling us how a film was shot by so many people working together and the process
Thank you for taking us through your journey
Thanks for giving us a window into the behind the scenes. Incredible how much planning and how many people are involved, even with a "small" shoot like this. You'll be directing in Hollywood soon enough.
Outstanding work and idea to convey - one cam. Looking forward to the journey. Thanks!
looking forward to the next part. Great work Simon, super valuable information.
Thanks for sharing the "normal" challenges of a video shoot. You Rock!
Welcome to the Nikon family! 🤗🤗🤗
You are actually so awesome! I have been following your channel over the last few years and it's been so incredible seeing your journey in storytelling. Can't wait to see the next video :)
Really appreciate the insight you gave as you went thru how you set up the shoot.
Hi Simon, I've been very inspired by you over the last 3 to 4 years. I seriously think about your work when I get down.
Behind the Scenes is always dope to watch!
Love BTS vids!
I woke up because I'm really nervous about filming tomorrow, I'm glad I stumbled upon this video...relaxed the hell out of me. It's just me, a canon t5i, three lenses, two actors, and a parking lot. I get nervous with the idea that anything bad can go wrong.
2 weeks after we take a photo of a black hole, Simon gets a new camera. :-)
Serious note: I've heard a lot of good things about the z6. I think it could be my next camera. And I'm still with the T5i!! :-D
Sammy B Films if you’re serious about film making id recommend getting a true cinema camera like the Pocket Cinema Camera 4k. If you really wanna buy a camera, this one a cheaper body. And for the price you’re gonna pay for the camera anyway, you may as well buy a camera that shoots RAW video so that you wont have to buy a new camera in the future. Otherwise you’ll beat yourself up for not having a camera with RAW capabilities. You’ll never say “it’s no RED camera” with the pocket 4k. Just trust the advice & pick the camera that shoots RAW video over the camera that still gives you h.264. Dont listen to all the stuff Nikon tells you about the Z6 being a “cinematic powerhouse.” They just want you to buy their camera.
Edit: i just read in the description that Nikon is planning on including RAW in a future update. Woops!! Depending on whether it’s true RAW video codec, it would make the Z6 the cheapest full-frame RAW video camera!!
T5i with magic lantern still rocks ! :)
Sammy B Films LOL at the black hole joke.
Joshua Herron My Mavic shoots raw🛩
Your voice is so relaxing and soothing
Never thought I'd see you in 4K. Well done mate.
This is awesome! Can’t wait for part two.
You never disappoint us with your efforts. Keep going man.
Always fun watching people do something creative. Looking forward to seeing the output too:)
Thanks for the new video. Like the added animation to the video. Interesting watching your skills change over the years.
Always loved the way you saw filmmaking!
The REAL DSLRguide is back...
A sell out?
that's a really good challenge using just a Camera. nice video! can't wait to watch the short.
You can do alot of cool things you really show the Necessities of filmmaking instead of what we all think we need
Great video! You have one of the best filmmaking channels on UA-cam. One of the best voices. Peace and Love.
Great vid dude! You've been killing the game for forever on here brotha! Keep it up, I'm pumped Nikon hooked you up!
Love love LOVE your videos, Simon! Glad you’re still making them!!!
Wow man this is so good! Simon I want to thank you for all these years of dedication. I believe we are the same age and I studied filmmaking in University, but honestly I learned (probably even more) from you! I haven't seen your channel in a while, but I got a sense of Nostalgia and joy knowing that you are fully dedicated to keep creating amazing stuff! Can't wait for the 2nd part man.
Thanks for your dedication Simon!

Internal stabilization is quite impressive. Would love that on my 6D II!
Loved this video!! Excited for the next one. Congrats on another short film Simon👊🏻
Simon, this is a wonderful BTS recap. Can't wait to see the film!
Congratulations on your new Z6! 🎉 Your filmmaking skills are really good! 👌
i literally watched you grow up and and to see you get a new camera its like your first baby * sheds tear *
keep working my youtube cousin
Simon, I always appreciate your brand integration. It's always a win-win situation for your audience.
Please keep it up.
Love love love this type of video! Can't wait for the next one!
Congrats on the new camera, Does this make you Mirrorlessguide now? lol
Awesome video. I am always so keen to see a new video from you.
Learned more in these 6 minutes than I have the past 10 years
Great work my dude. Love the energy in your videos
Cool video, Simon! You seem to have a cloud of bad luck over your productions when it comes to actors dropping out! Not that it's ever affected the end product, your films are always great, I can't wait to see this one.
You and your videos inspired me to want to become a film makers I got the Canon T2i and then the T3i when I saw that was the camera you used I am 45 and I look up to you because I love the look you can get out of that camera I got my T3i barely used for 200 USD with Kit lens thank you for all your videos and free Education you gave me I am still learning but my weakness is Writing. And planning out shots
Just keep grinding and you will get better! :)
Thank you
Brilliant and invaluable information every single time! Thank you!
That's what I'm talking about - good old Simon, showing what it's really like to be a director :D
Fascinating to follow you through the process. Cheers!
*Just eagerly waiting for the next part.*
This Channel Is One Of the Finest Guidance 🙌 the led is leader.
Cool man! Keep posting beautiful video like this, thanks 😉
So weird, I was just thinking I've yet to see a proper short film shot with the Z6. Looking forward to watching the full short.
Fastest six minutes. Miss your weekly uploads. I am really looking forward to seeing more
This is where I learned film making, thank you :)
Looking forward to part 2! Loved the video! Nice work :)
I think it's great that Nikkom hooked u up with the camers for free. Sorry for this (but) but with the panasonic S1 being able to do internal 10 bit @ 4:2:2 as well as dual S.D. recording. Don't you think the s1 saves u the hassle of having to carry aroun an external recorder?
Thanks, this was good and can't wait for part 2 and the short film.
It's been a while since I watched one of your videos, I forgot how much I love them!
Brilliant. Absolutely. Looking forward to seeing next week’s edition and the final product. Bravo!
what a great story :) looking forward to the next part
Awesome man! Excited for part 2!
Fucking golden. Couldn't care less that it's an add, I think we're all pretty sure that there's no bullshit around here. Much love
Yes!!!!! You’re back!
Sounds like the music from Any Given Sunday at the beginning, great video
Thanks for the breakdown! This was really informative.
So hyped to see the finished film 💯
Thanks for telling us about what went wrong. It's nice to know I'm not the only one things like that happen to. :^)
Also, have you considered a lengthy behind the scenes version? Something that covers most of what happened behind the scenes? Or does that footage not exist?
Hey Caleb! I'm also using a t3i currently, and was wondering if you could give some advise me on it. Aside from using low ISO, to avoid noise on the footage, I've noticed some noise and some loss of clarity when I use custom picture profiles such as Cinestyle or those free "C-log" imitations in comparison to using picture profiles built in camera. Any thoughts if this is a common issue? Thanks!
Nothing but respect to you man 👏🏾
I'm proud of you for sticking with your T3i for as long as you did because you branded yourself as being an equipment minimalist, which inspires people like me to get into making videos. But your going to have to buy your own Ninja V if you want to use the Z6. We will forgive you for that. ;)
The sketching is very good
I love you man! I’ve missed your videos!
My channel started with an iPhone camera and a tripod. It's just now that I'm learning how to incorporate a "real" camera as well as audio, now that I've bought a couple microphones (I'd never try to use the iPhone camera and audio together). Nice job with your film.
Sooo good work !
I'll be honest, I don't agree with your film making philosophy at all, but I'm very happy to see how far you've come and how much you've grown since the early UA-cam days.
What part don't you agree with?
Solid quality!
This is the dream!
Nice work!👏🏾🙏🏾
More, Simon. More!!!
Amazing channel. Great content
thank you for sharing this! ✨
Always an excellent story. How did you film the filming (the behind the scenes)? Looks like some hand held shots and some static shots. Did you have to focus on this as well as the main shoot?
that was filmed with a second Z6 on a monopod :) I brief who ever is filming behind-the-scenes before the shoot, but then usually focus entirely on the main shoot, trusting them to capture everything :)
