After watching this video I'm very glad. You know why ? cause I got what I'm very need What is it? The edits software!!!! Thank you to tell the software name.
DSLRguide I watched the short film and this for its process. I admire the effort, and definitely gives it a thumbs up for the film. Great job, not a bad story but it lacked depth, I haven't been through what you had but with my experience I would suggest the story to have an arc even the slightest, because with three minutes there were too many shots being too sluggish in the sense in didn't bring up the matter. It's good that you make audience cross refer to their prior knowledge of the situation as supposed to telling a full story but that makes the story partial. The character lacked development in the sense that the whole story was being explained which i thought was bad. I would find that the night scene seems unnecessary especially if it's difficult to shoot and did little impact because I see no difference between it being shot in day or night. It didn't show how he was not acknowledged but just alone in the streets. Here is a really personal thing that ignoring the presence is not shown. What makes the homeless person feel that way, it's probably The eye contact, that look through part, no visuals supported that except it being a really quick and abrupt flashback. What about inhumane do you intend to bring out? From the attempt it seems like you want to leave a questioning ending with your statement however I would like to see that the dilemma was put clearer because the teacher was put so far away, what does she mean by she should have said something, she was so far away. As a teacher naturally it's difficult to find one that even goes through mental struggle standing up upon a public humiliation which was unnatural as well. I don't know how often that happens in your country but from my point of view what would be a better reflex was straight up chase him off or a more outrageous bully that screams across the thing that they smell. Which defines the main reason for the bully without saying at all if you composed it well. Then a teacher that rescues listens to find out as they settle down. Three minutes would be fine for that. Being an asshole and critique for so Long, I apologise but at the same time those were suggestions and my views, I love the cinematography, reminds me of many old school films like all others, it evoked some thoughts definitely. I appreciate the effort time and production to bring us the contemporary example of how classical filmmakers look at film. like my religion tells my story is king. My religion is filmmaking.
I think the worst thing a film maker could do is depend on other things/people to just start. When you do that you begin to make up excuses as to why you aren't making enough movies and you get stuck in this mentality. Like Casey Neistat once said and i quote, "you want to be a a filmmaker, you just start, you pick up any camera and you start shooting". And I agree 100 percent with what he means. And if you clearly look back at his content you could see that most of his movies were done by himself. No help from anyone. He was able to beat around that barrier most people give themselves about NOT MAKING ENOUGH and that's why he was able to get really good. Every dumb movie was something new he learned.
DSLRguide why don't you start shooting on your own more often? Not like daily blogging but take an idea and make something out of it. Not focus too much on the writing or the actors. I know it's a bit different from what you are used to but I think it would help you gain a better perspective. Love your channel btw. One of my top UA-camrs :)
Diogo Almeida Back in my sixteen-millimeter days I did one with a Fisher Price camera that recorded on audio tape in black and white. it had a fabulous look and we transferred it to 16 mm and edited it at FAF in San Francisco. It was a silent film about gold mining. My exwife`s idea. Sometimes it is the cheapest thing you ever made that you're still the most proud of. Unfortunately I lost the damn reel.
Simon, last month I gave myself a month to write, record, mix and master a 4 track EP I was up still mastering right up until the deadline of 5:00pm and I still reckon it's my best work (having been writing since I was really young) Videos like yours inspired me to set the deadline. Amazing stuff!
After watching the whole video, I say, thanks man! This is exactly what I needed, I do budget Films. Thank You for doing this educational video Simon...
Hi Mr. Cade, My friend and I have recently made our first short film. Your videos have been a huge help and inspiration to us as we do not have expensive equipment (we are broke high schoolers) but we do want to learn and make the best films possible. We watched tons of your videos in preparation for filming and editing. Thank you for helping with these awesome informative videos, it is really helpful to have videos such as this one to show how to make interesting and professional looking films without professional equipment. Keep up the great channel! Thanks again!
Inspired by you i went out and shot a video entirely on smartphone and focused all on the audio and the content itself rather than editing and all the nice shots. It's called Page 1 of 365 | A poem. I think I really pushed myself beyond my limits. Thanks Simon!
Just getting around to seeing this.. The footage at 6:43 is filmed in NYC on the UWS. Funny as I was just in that station and grew up in that area.. Very cool. It amazing what you can do with inexpensive and older equipment. We have been thinking to finally make the move to 4k - though wonder if we should hold out another year.
Is the Rode with windshield good enough for outside windy conditions? I have the Rode VideoMic (not the Pro) and I can always hear the wind and an always present grainy noise.
I am right there with you. I can probably account for 50 of the views on the counter. When ever I get stuck and feel like I need some new gear to get unstuck, I come back here, reflect on the message, and go back to my gear shelf and realize I have more than everything I need to get the job done. Thanks Simon!!
This does seem like an interesting challenge to see how far your story telling and creativity takes the film, without being so caught up in the technical side of things. Excited to see the final you came up with!
Hitfilm Express is awesome. The power it gives you for free is pretty amazing. I use Sony Vegas and that has me covered for 95% of what i do since I do mostly talking head interview style videos. The first time I saw Filmstro in action (in a Film Riot episode) my mind was BLOWN. The level of control you have to score your video is simply amazing especially for someone like myself who is musically challenged. I don't do enough video work to buy a sub to Filmstro but if I had more regular work I'd get a subscription in a heart beat. I recommend it to everyone I know who does video work. When I need a quick music bed for a talking head, I normally just head over to Jukedeck or Incompotech and that works well enough for me. I try to avoid Incopotech because every indie film maker out there and their mother uses those tracks LOL. Jukedeck is pretty interesting. The music is dynamically generated by a computer AI based on a few simple parameters who supply. The music ends up sounding a bit generic but for a simple music bed for a talking head video or tutorial it works great. Again, great video Simon. glad to see you are getting great sponsors supporting your work (I REALLY like Filmstro) and hope you get more so you can create more great content.
You’re like the best person to learn from. Everything from your calm tone and well paced talking to your technical knowledge, creative freeness and open mind. Disappointed that I haven’t seen any new content from you but I’m sure you’re doing what you love so keep it up
This was really interesting, I can't wait to see the short film. I love the look of the shots you showed, especially the one at 4:10. The background in that shot almost looks like rear projection. Just about everything I see now looks really smooth and clean, which is nice sometimes, but I miss that textured look.
We just finished a half hour short using 2 XR550 Sony camcorders, green screen, two sennheiser mics, a motorised slider and some rgb lighting and a hand held rig most of the filming was in one room mainly because of the story we were really pleased with the result. For editing we uses Sony Vegas and Hitfilm Pro.
I needed this. I was getting really bogged down by how intimidating filmmaking can be. But this served as a comforting reminder that sometimes it's okay to just strip it down to bare essentials, and just make something. Nothing fancy. Just a camera, a mic, and a script. Thanks for this.
Thank you SOOoo much! I'm so grateful I'm gonna cry. Ive been procrastinating because I felt my equipment wasnt up to par... Or I didn't have everything I "needed". This really got me excited again about shooting and creating! You're insights, style and ideas are refreshing and an absolute Godsend. Bless you
I think if they respect you and your work, and if you in turn send them a clip they can use in their showreels, you may be able to get decent actors that are still waiting for their big break :-)
Nothing makes an amateur shoot better than go-getting actors with positive attitudes. I've don't think I've ever had a shoot where actors didn't drop out last minute and it's always so much better when the actors that do turn up and understanding and up for doing a good job!
I advice all the new filmmakers to start on their own using what they already have !! In the cinema world there is not only money ! In the past the best film directors were producers, DOP, gaffer... and they just did what their minds told them !!!!! this is cinema, it's an art, it's a businesse but always needs good ideas.....not good equipment..... Have you ever seen some backstages from kubrick's or hitchcock's movies ? Did you know that during shining's shootings Stanley used to go to jack's room saying that he had changed something in the script ?.....HE DID IT EVERYDAY ! P.S. Intersting channel
GOOD JOB!!! I really love your channel it's always spewing so much positivity. Your channel is what encouraged me to make my first documentary!! Thank u!
I greatly appreciate your honest insight and advice. I personally struggle with trying to plan every detail flawlessly before ever even picking up the camera. I've recently challenged myself to use what I have to make a short-film every month. It doesn't have to be anything amazing, it just has to be done by the end of the month. This forces me not to slow down so I can get it perfect, but instead I have to focus on moving forward and doing the best I can with my own resources and available time. I'd highly suggest doing the same to anyone who struggles with the same thing.
Can't wait to see the outcome. Also, I wish you did more advanced stuff but I really love that you make these kinds of videos because you make the most sense for beginners.
Here's one tip worth the risk: Make the most out of your equipment. Very general but specifically, your camera. I have changed the firmware on my D5100 so that I could have full control of the camera because before I could not adjust the ISO when shooting LiveView. In the past, I get grainy useless footage but now I get cinematic and borderline professional quality footage. It has some risk of bricking your camera (I surely felt that) but it is definitely worth it. It's not limited to cameras however, I've used an old tripod lying around as a boom pole and I've used spare pvc piping to make a small grip mount. Editing software can get you anywhere if you dig deep enough and find awesome plugins such as the Magic Bullet Suite. *not sponsored Use everything you have and make the most out of it since it's the only thing you have right now. Be thankful.
I had ago at filming a project in my workshop on my old cannon bridging camera. think the setting were wrong for a bit of it but happy with how it turned out, as I'm a COMPLETE novice at this stuff! thanks for all the tips!! :)
You got a cellphone? Start with that. You don’t need sound; make a silent film. You don’t have a cast? You be the star. You CAN tell a story in 7 minutes or less. Commercials do it in :30-:60 seconds Cartoons tell a story complete with gags in 7 minutes. You can too.
Thank you so much Simon Cade. You are a true golden discovery for filmmakers that are just starting out like me. God bless and I hope you achieve everything you want and more. Thank you again.
absolutely! if you'd like to add Italian subtitles to any of my videos, I'd really appreciate that. here's how: support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB
Nice work. What I really like about this video is your follow through. Even though things did not go your way you didn't give up. You also shared that. Which when things don't go they way you want can be so difficult. Nice work! Keep at it and I can't wait to see the film.
Im doing a filmmaking course at college. Its way tougher and has more challenges than you think. It is very enjoyable but there are tight deadlines to meet along with people letting you down, I admire anyone who makes daily videos by themselves and still has time left over. It takes months to plan and make a decent 5 min film on dartmoor with a crew of 4
some of the best films arent shot in 4k... think about that...i've seen a short film shot with a drone and it was better than half of these huge " red dragon" films
Simon thank you for doing this challenge as I really believe that most of what gets us blocked is first psychological. For example: "that it won't be good enough or that it wont look like a Hollywood production'. Whatever!!! I have a two DSLR, and Iphone but what i use the most seems to be the iphone for just shooting the everyday to turn into something unique. I use my Dslr for other "high end" production, but i'm not even trying to compete with Hollywood. That is pointless! The first barrier is yourself and the films you make do not have to be typical stories. Why not invent the wheel. I love Hollywood but I love all kinds of films. One person I quite admire is Chris Cunningham's work for inspiration.
Looking forward to seeing what you've created! I shoot all my biking adventure videos with my mobile phone because a.) I'm on a budget; and more importantly b.) my mobile phone is small, compact and easy to carry on board my bike where other, larger cameras would not be portable.
I worked with a film director... I won't name drop. But he made a series of about three films right before the Canon 5D Mark ii came out, so he had to use a Camcorder and he didn't want to use anything big as he wanted to shoot fast and easy and he won quite a few film festivals with those films and they don't look anywhere near as good as what a smartphone can do today. Then I was involved in the one we made with the 5d Mark ii, which also won a ton of awards, one camera, two lenses that was it. The audio was done well though, the camera won't matter as much but people can really tell when the audio is bad. He didn't use anything expensive though.
This gives hope to aspiring film maker, we are bombarded nowadays with gadgets and ultra modern cameras but forgot its about story telling and the tools are least of concern.
I love your videos, you talk intelligently ,calmly and at a good pace. I have learnt so much from you, and enjoyed every video. You have wisdom and knowledge beyond your years, keep making videos, you are inspiring many many people to experience the joys of film making. I have 4 videos on you tube, thanks to you.
You spent more on audio equipment than visuals because it's the audio that makes the difference. Very true! I became the cameraman/director for a few weeks because we had to make a short film related to a school subject. At first I though our film was going to be boring because it's so boring in the set, but when I already edited everything, threw in all the sounds and music and stuff, I was surprised at how it became pretty entertaining to watch! It's still pretty much crap but without a doubt sounds did something to it!
I like to compromise with "cheaper" DIY techniques. Like taping my Zoom H1 audio recorder on a broom pole with rubber bands and the cardboard part of the tape for the shock mount . It really works!
Well done, Sam,. Great video and inspirational in its content. I am nearly three times your age learning all the time how to do filming well. I love your commentary because it is always both gut honest and ambitious. Keep doing what you do and remain close to your ideals.
Painters pole for mic boom......Gump, your a genius!!! I know I’ve got one in the garage, and I know I’ve got a small diameter condenser mic (Nady) somewhere. Love your video, thanks from Akron, Ohio.
the short film is finished! watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/CKXzeum29Xg/v-deo.html
It's become a very nice end result!! So nice, just with a cheap camera.. love it!

DSLRguide in fact I have something I need completed by Monday and I just started. Hopefully it'll come out great.

honestly, simon could make a good 2 hour feature film using a potato
NoSarcasm so true!
NoSarcasm best coment of the year. Is hillarios
Potato mark 4 is out named after the man that says no sarcasm
Kanashii I wish I could like a video more than once.
Kanashii Yeah! Also 200th like!!
Bro u are the best on you tube who gives honest advise.Appreciate it
*I second that!*
yeah man for sure!
Transform Brothers i third that!
Agreed man
Transform Brothers Agreed , 100%.
Here's a challenge! Shoot and edit using only a smartphone 📱. Use another phone for sound.
Pixelvision, I had one of those. Not exactly high res but it had a look very hard to replicate.
There are actually film festivals popping up now that only accept films that have been shot on phones.
I made one back in the day, with a 1.3 megapixel camera and even edited it on the phone :D It turned out pretty well tho. Was very proud of it.
Diogo Almeida already did that .learned a lot
I just found your channel and I adore the Content you make! Props to you, Sir! For making UA-cam great again!
Simon, last month I gave myself a month to write, record, mix and master a 4 track EP
I was up still mastering right up until the deadline of 5:00pm and I still reckon it's my best work (having been writing since I was really young)
Videos like yours inspired me to set the deadline. Amazing stuff!
Appreciate the time you put into these vids!
After watching the whole video, I say, thanks man!

Thank You for doing this educational video Simon...
Am I the only one that wanted to see the finished product? *raises hand and looks around*
Vani Jay It's uploaded on his other channel called cadevisuals.
dumass
He’s the perfect reason why you don’t need a big budget to make a film
I just wrote a short film and I legit am in a cheap budget. I think you just saved this project for me. Great video man!
5:47 looks great. Proper exposure and good composition is all it takes :)

That setup is literally what I use, except I record with a 4K Panasonic Lumix G7! BTW that Rode mic is an excellent microphone.
that's quite a big except.
N.W.A. Yeah I know! I wouldn't really consider the Rode and Tascam stuff we be cheap equipment though.
Is the Rode with windshield good enough for outside windy conditions? I have the Rode VideoMic (not the Pro) and I can always hear the wind and an always present grainy noise.
I keep coming back to this when I lose track of what's really important in filmmaking. Thank you Simon.

Great video DSLRGuide! Your destroying every amateur filmmakers excuses, video by video!
it's the most relaxing thing ever. You could be talking about about anything and I would still love this.
the fucking best channel on youtube.
Bless you
I didn't know you could actually get actors cheaply...but where? Craigslist?
Dorupero Facebook actor/filmmaker groups
Dorupero given only half of them showed up, it appears that you get what you pay for when it comes to actors!
yeah actors may not be free unless they are your friends
I think if they respect you and your work, and if you in turn send them a clip they can use in their showreels, you may be able to get decent actors that are still waiting for their big break :-)
Go to a Uni.
This is very inspirational. Someone actually using cheap gear, gives hope to those of us who have shoe string budgets. Thanks Simon.
Davinci Resolve is a great alternative with some extra's.
Ruben Kemp I'd love to use it but can't get it to load my footage on PC.
What format is your footage?
Ruben Kemp hitfilm is better
+Jo He not for colour correction
Exactly. The free version may not have the cool effects and bonuses hitfilm has, but the color correction in the free version is just outstanding.
I may only make bus videos but your inspirational videos drive me on. Thank you.
I love everything about this comment.
We are around the same age yet your are my master and I am the padawan
Nailed it about the "doesn't matter what equipment you use" comments!

Great vid! Cant wait to see the short film. Its amazing what a little color grading does to the film.
Where's the short film?
coming next week! just need a bit more time with it
DSLRguide. Awesome, looking forward to it!
on "cadevisuals" channel I suppose
Osman Carim it's going to be uploaded next week

I can't wait for this film to see how it turned out!!!

What website do you use to find actors?
Nolan Woodward .
Nolan Woodward ask your friends
FB acting groups are good places to start.
CharlieFS nobody thought of that
kipupking is that sarcastic?

Editing software can get you anywhere if you dig deep enough and find awesome plugins such as the Magic Bullet Suite. *not sponsored
Use everything you have and make the most out of it since it's the only thing you have right now. Be thankful.
What font did you use?:)
I had ago at filming a project in my workshop on my old cannon bridging camera. think the setting were wrong for a bit of it but happy with how it turned out, as I'm a COMPLETE novice at this stuff! thanks for all the tips!! :)
I wishI I'd seen this 15 years ago...
hehe same
The short was incredible. The sound really did make it cinematic.
This is still too expensive for me. :(
You got a cellphone? Start with that. You don’t need sound; make a silent film. You don’t have a cast? You be the star. You CAN tell a story in 7 minutes or less. Commercials do it in :30-:60 seconds Cartoons tell a story complete with gags in 7 minutes. You can too.
Thank you so much Simon Cade. You are a true golden discovery for filmmakers that are just starting out like me. God bless and I hope you achieve everything you want and more. Thank you again.
where is the actual video? -_- the one you made with the cheap camera?
Watch the full episode. He mentions he's releasing it next week.
I get so stoked every time simon uploads a new video, honestly
As long as the audio is good the visuals can be ropey and you can get away with it. The converse is not true.
This is my favorite UA-cam video. It has inspired me to move forward with my desire to make films on a small budget. Thank you so much!
8:20 RIP APPLE OUTRO 2017
This is one of my favorite channels on youtube for a couple different reasons. Thanks for posting informative content like this.
I'm italian, is there any ways I can help you traslating your videos?
absolutely! if you'd like to add Italian subtitles to any of my videos, I'd really appreciate that. here's how: support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB
DSLRguide i like you videos and i from finland more videos
Can you link me this short film?I'm very impressed by your work
Lorenzo - I need to talk with you. I just subscribed. I need you to translate a song for me into Italian. Are you interested?
bluenetmarketing shure!
It's nice to see someone embracing the older equipment to make movies.
It's been a week. Where the film at?
probably tomorrow
Nice work. What I really like about this video is your follow through. Even though things did not go your way you didn't give up. You also shared that. Which when things don't go they way you want can be so difficult. Nice work! Keep at it and I can't wait to see the film.
Do you still make films?
Who the fuck would have used that camera when smartphones exist?
Frex You dont gave mic input on smartphones...
You could use a seperate device to record it, and then sync it
Looking forward to seeing what you've created!
I shoot all my biking adventure videos with my mobile phone because a.) I'm on a budget; and more importantly b.) my mobile phone is small, compact and easy to carry on board my bike where other, larger cameras would not be portable.
Challenge accepted! :-)
This is what you literally call cheap budgeting, thank you!!
looked at your short film after watching this video its SOLID i loved man. GREAT WORK!!!!!
I love your videos, you talk intelligently ,calmly and at a good pace. I have learnt so much from you, and enjoyed every video. You have wisdom and knowledge beyond your years, keep making videos, you are inspiring many many people to experience the joys of film making. I have 4 videos on you tube, thanks to you.
i really loved the JVC camera footage...
I literally just came from the last shoot of my first short movie. thank you so much for all the advice Simon!!
I love watching your videos for TWO reasons, ONE they're inspiring, SECOND, they bring back my memories of time I was in UK 😁😎❤
I watched the actual Short before watching this video. Y'all did a great job on it.
Well done, Sam,. Great video and inspirational in its content. I am nearly three times your age learning all the time how to do filming well. I love your commentary because it is always both gut honest and ambitious. Keep doing what you do and remain close to your ideals.
Once again proving content over equipment. Brilliant as always Simon.
That Filmstro demo was amazing. I've never heard of such a program, it's a really cool idea!
I use Hitfilm Express and love it...you can also buy add-ons for it.
Great work man. I actually love the image coming from old, cheap cameras. Especially if the sensor is a CCD.
I love the fonts for your equipment to give it that old, cheap vibe👍
The font and effect for it is sooo cool!
Painters pole for mic boom......Gump, your a genius!!! I know I’ve got one in the garage, and I know I’ve got a small diameter condenser mic (Nady) somewhere. Love your video, thanks from Akron, Ohio.
