I'm writing a series of food and wine-based films and looking at your stuff for technical know-how but am seeing something new the last times. By positioning yourself as 'what I didn't know' but 'Now I know'....', you've actually created a nice story arc, using an element of drama in a tutorial. It is character development. Very clever. By observing yourself twice, you can narrate and yet still be the 'hero', without it being too first-person-driven. Nice one.

I really like that this video wasn't some editing / postproduction / effect / grading tutorial or tips tricks kind of thing but rather how you can improve yourself.
I noticed something similar when I started out with photography on analog, then digital and was on a budget. Composition and light matters so much, and you have to get used and learn to see the world differently to see what would be a great shot or something you can work with to improve to get the meaning out of if of what you want to tell people.

***** Simon talked about that in one video (I don't remember which one). That's where I got the idea from. I get what you're saying with the "What's in front of the camera matters more than the camera itself" and it's a nice sentiment, but I only agree with it to an extent. I think your situation makes a big difference. For instance, I shoot with a Canon T4i, and it doesn't do very well in low light. I shot some concert photos a while back, and I had to crank the ISO because the lighting was so bad, even with using some faster lenses, and even at 800 ISO the pictures are pretty grainy with the T4i. I don't think I'd have that problem with a camera that has a better processor and ISO capabilities. But, again, I get it, you're just trying to encourage people to get out there and shoot with whatever they have available, which I can stand by! Either way, great videos, Simon! Thanks!

I was walking around with a GoPro on a stick wirelessly connected to my mobile device. I was looking at the frame on my phone while panning with the camera. As I was moving to a different location, I passed by an older, grey haired man who said, "did you find what you were looking for?" I replied, "I am actually not certain. I kind of do this as a pass time, instead of just looking out the window." His next comment didn't surprise me, but it rubbed off as a bit rude. "You look like you're playing that pokemon game." Him and I were both truck drivers parked next to each other, and familiar with the events caused by distracted drivers. Quickly, I noted, "I don't support that game or it's creators." He said a few more words about young kids and their phones and driving. I decided it was best to ignore him and continue on my way. That was an experience I had with a passerby while photo hunting.

Sounds like you're on the right track. When I started using photography, eons ago, there were no computer generated programs, no computers in fact. Photography was what you made it. The most helpful thing I learned was a method called Rules of Composition. This, along with viewing good black and white images helped me so much. B and W just takes it all down to the most basic level, so the art of the image stands out. When I see a B and W that I like, I just ask myself why I like it and study it a bit. Lighting and composition always seem to be at the center of a great image.

I've been gorging myself on (mostly) your videos to take my film making to the next level (mainly training videos and interviews for work; not my core function/job) and I must say, you're--in my opinion--the best on UA-cam. I've watched the quality of these videos and your performances skyrocket in quality, but also: you've mostly shifted from the technical end to the more abstract concepts that really govern all the technical things. I love that. I also love that you encourage people to make art with anything. The artist really does matter more than the brush. Great work!

+DSLRguide I tried applying Weren't Herzogs theory, and I struggled to remember how I imagined scenes in order to produce the image. So I ended up drawing how I imagined the scenes. Although he's a man of great experience, his ideal of using a storyboard is simply too hard and not worth that effort. Great video btw

I've been watching your videos and I thought I might share an old fashioned idea.
You can use aluminum insulation as cheap secondary lighting. Aluminum insulation is basically aluminum foil pasted on a stiff-ish sponge board. You should be able to find it at your local hardware store. If you can't find any, you can improvise by pasting aluminum foil on a piece of cardboard. It is lightweight and reflects light. You can have a friend hold one near your actor just out of the field of view and it will serve as secondary lighting, especially when you are filming outdoors. Not recommended in hot climate though. It can get sweltering hot for the actor.

Hello, i am very much into film-making and photography. As a 12yo girl it might seem crazy to want to be the one filming all the great films, but it is a dream if have had for ages and i want to study film making when i go to University. I have taken many photos on my I-phone4s and they turned out pretty good, but i think they can turn out better. I was wondering maybe you could email me and help me to improve my phots, i would then send you my phots and you could tell me what i should improve on them and how i can improve on them. The only thing i am unsure about is how to give you my email becasue i dont want to give it to you over UA-cam as it is public. Please let me know

be careful putting yourself out their, the Internet is dangerous. I suggest you look for a local film group, or perhaps an art club but make sure you know the people in them first

Its like this with music, photography, videos, etc... Even things we don't consider art. The more conscious you are of it, the more you are trained to look/listen for whatever it is. My eyes are trained to examine contrast as well as the way light falls off/shadow. I did this through years of pixel peeping and looking at images. Now I do it even when I'm not taking pictures. Later I became more conscious of the composition, so I'm aware of patterns around me. The great thing is, this does not just help your art; it makes you more conscious of the world around you. A beautiful sunset 7 years ago looks nothing like a beautiful sunset today for me. Emotion is the biggest one to be in tune with. The way I touch a guitar string affects the way a song feels for example. I can play the same song at the same BPM and touch the strings very similar but just one little microscopic difference and it changes the emotion that I feel and others will feel. I also do not think the imagination is what we have been told it is. There is far more to it. Everything around you came out of the imagination. Even you came out of the imagination, unless one wants to be a materialist atheist and deny that. One of the best documentaries I've ever seen that captured real emotion was the movie, "Vinyl," it's on UA-cam. A guy made it with his video camera, before we all had computers. It's not really about collecting records. I care nothing about collecting records, yet the movie is captivating. Because really it's about why people deprive themselves of life for these records, OCD, loneliness, etc. You can't watch that film and forget it. I probably think about that movie every other day or so and it's been years.

I think you're absolutely right, well said. I like to think of it as being like learning to read. Initially we're illiterate, but once we learn to "read" (whether it's visuals, sounds, music, emotions, thematics etc) then we start seeing them pop up everywhere

    • @nagol5178
      @nagol5178 8 років тому

DSLRguide I didn't really start learning how to do anything until I started learning how to read the Bible. I played music long before I knew what a Corinthian even was. After learning scripture my musical ability took a spike and I learned things I never thought I could learn. I was able to finally get out of the style of music I was so accustomed to playing. I know that non-Christians may not like this idea but I'm not the only one that notices it... When you read the scripture it seems like you are more aware of how everything else works. You can see big things in small things. Kind of like Jesus parables, he's talking the Kingdom of God by illustrating planting a simple field. Then you start noticing things work the same in cycles, no matter what it is. It can be something in scripture, like Adam having his side opened and his bride being made from that or Jesus having his side pierced and his bride (The Church), being made from that. Or you go to the book of the Generations of Adam and find out he lived 950 years and then go to the 950th chapter of the Bible and the very first words you read, "This is the book of the Generation of Jesus Christ." It's kinda like things are fractal in some way. Kinda like you can take the smallest particle, put it under a microscope, and then you've got the ratio's as well as what the entire universe looks like.

Super inspirational and helpful. I only use a Canon 750D and so I remind myself not to let those cinematic videos frustrate me because really, it’s not always the gear. What really matters is the emotion you’re trying to capture even with what you only have. I still have so much to learn though, and your channel is pretty much always my go-to. Thank you!

2:23 I definitely agree with that in terms of time. If you just take a little bit longer to find the right location, you save more time in the long run because you don't have to go back and re-shoot half your day.

I really like your way of thinking. That's what I always say to my friends who are all the time asking about your equipment and stupid things like "WHOA, thats a nice camera. You should take amazing pictures with it"... And the fact is, as you said, nowadays most of my best pictures where taken with the phone, because most of that "visualising moments" (thats how I call it) the only camera I have is the phone.
Your idea of saving not only photos but favourite frames from movies and draw his storyboard looks a great idea. I've never did storyboards, I should give it a try

Those two stills of the bathroom, I like the first one (without the head) better. There's a sense of mystery as to scale that's appealing. Having a head in-frame removes the mystery and the appeal.

I like your note about it is important of keeping high standards instead of buying expensive cam, but I thought I don't need mirror camera until I had a need of different lenses (zoom vs low light vs standard 58mm) and learned to use aperture. And, of course, it is always nice to have separate device for separate function (using smartphone for filming, taking pictures, navigation and as a dash cam made me want to buy different device for different need).
