  • Sertraline is an antidepressant in the SSRI class. It’s used for depression, anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and a number of other conditions.
    After entering the market in the early 1990s, sertraline became one of the most popular antidepressants.
    The drug is used in adults, adolescents, and children. There might be greater concerns and lower efficacy in young people.

    Sertraline allows me to function like a regular person. I've been taking it for over a decade, and I owe a lot to it. But, what works for me won't necessarily work for someone else. Still, if you get this prescribed to you, give it a chance before you write it off entirely.

      @Austin Yipeo i am not against using the medication, but they should monitor their patients for serious side effects. Most patients won't go to the clinic to report the side effects cuz they don't want to pay for another visit. They come for us (pharmacists). Yet sadly pharmacists' role are still restricted though we do know about drugs more than physicians.

    This is what has helped me overcome PMDD and overall has lifted the everlasting cloud over my mood and overall outlook. I luckily haven’t experienced the sexual side affects. I realize that having the right attitude is a HUGE part in treatment. You must want to have a shift in your mindset. Our minds are powerful operating systems that don’t like change. Don’t give up. Life can feel great again.

    Zoloft helped me soften paranoid thoughts and has decreased my level of anxiety. As a result, certain activities such as taking tests and socializing are easier. It does make me tired, and it is somewhat less effective (in my case) of alleviating depression. I have noticed that I haven’t felt severely depressed at any time, but overall the medication makes me feel a bit sluggish. I have also gained 15 pounds, which is something to watch out for when taking antidepressants. I haven’t noticed a significant change in my sex drive.
    Considering these main effects, I am psychologically at a higher risk of engaging in risky or unhealthy behaviors. This may mean having the guts to say what I really mean, but also has involved driving over the speed limit, road rage, occasional unnecessary arguments, an impulse to smoke weed more often than usual, and overeating.
    Overall, I feel much better than I did before taking Zoloft, which is why I’m hesitant to stop despite some of what I just said.

    • @Enrique-fb4tt
      @Enrique-fb4tt 2 роки тому +3

      I would consider in your case the pros and cons with SSRIs use. Engaging into risky behaviors could be a sign, that you might be developing hypo-/mania. Carelessness and not thinking about consequences is also linked to hyperactivation and thought distortions caused by SSRIs through serotonin activity.

    I took this for five weeks feeling jittery, having diarrhea, & yawning anxiously constantly. I was sure it wasn’t working & then suddenly I felt so much better & those initial effects subsided. I was shocked at how much it helped my anxiety, & instead of telling myself that I hate myself all day, I started saying to myself that I loved myself. That’s when I knew that it HAD to be working. Give it some time.

    When I used this It helped me regulate my emotions, I became happy, started working out and had a better out look on life. I also became slightly obnoxious and very self centered. I had an incredible focus and always stayed busy BUT when I was feeling sad I felt like I was just an empty shell. I stopped taking it and made changes in my life to better myself even more and even though I lost some of my charisma and gained some weight back I flipped my life completely for the best. In my opinion these are great “band aids” for things that make us uncomfortable and things we can’t change but you should never hope for these to make your life better if it’s shitty. If your life is a mess or there’s things that you can change then you should just change them and try not to just put up with it. Other wise these will eat you alive. But that was just me

    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do one of paroxetine! Ive been watching and supporting (and waiting haha) since day one. Methadone is also important, venlafaxine too. And what would be very important, to me and I'm sure a lot of people, is an in depth overview of the sedating antihistamines and their sleep efficacy. The main ones I ask that you cover are promethazine, doxylamine, diphenhydramine (I know you've done a video on that one before but I'd love you to compare all these and go as in depth as you can), and hydroxyzine. Thanks Seth! You're amazing

    This has educated me on ssri drugs more than any of my doctors who have prescribed them to me. I did not even know the drugs I was being told to take were ssri drugs. Searching the brand name always lead me to the manufacture’s website, who’s primary concern is selling the drug and having it prescribed to people, so of course I was never told about the dependencies I could develop due to the withdrawals (and not having the luxury to be able to set time aside for the withdrawals). You hit the nail on the head when you said sufficient information is often not given/known by the doctors prescribing, and it is more so withheld from patients (not necessarily with bad intent, more along the lines of there isn’t enough time in the doctors visit) and that has impacted my live for the worse. If only I had seen this video sooner; I would have asked more questions about my prescriptions, and would have avoided some major pitfalls that I am still recovering from.

    Just because a medication doesn't agree with your body's physiological chemistry, does not make it a "shit" drug. wellbutrin didn't agree with my liver but that doesn't mean it's a bad drug for everyone. as someone who suffers from the symptoms of depression, it was hard enough to feel comfortable with trying medication in general. when it comes to medication, do your research, talk to your doctor and pay attention to your body and how it reacts. do not take someone else's opinion as fact because that person happened to have a bad experience.

    Doctors throw these things out like candy. Hell, they often don't even go over the side effects, they just toss them around knowing that they work some of the time and don't pose much of a risk for misuse or overdose.

    • @jonnysith
      @jonnysith 7 років тому +27

      I agree but the reality of the situation is that docs see hundreds of patients a day and don't have the time to educate. But when it's comes down to it as an individual, you have to know what you're putting in your mouth, and that should only be decided by you after intensive research.

    It was prescribed to me for depression and OCD. It seemed to make no difference for either, but I found myself being much more sociable than usual, I could actually talk to and approach people without freaking out. Although I didn't have many negative side effects, it was still prescribed too quickly and without much discussion of the pros and cons in my opinion. I got up to 100mg and began to feel "off" all the time, so I decided to stop taking it. I went down by 25mg every week. During the tapering and for a few weeks after I had nausea and vomiting, dizziness (genuinely could not walk in a straight line for a little while), crying spells, and occasional periods in which I felt like I was losing grip on reality (delirium, basically). I did not experience any "brain zaps" at all.

    • @MrMagichobo21
      @MrMagichobo21 7 років тому +3

      I also have experience with a few other antidepressants. Citalopram 10mg had no effect on depression or OCD, but I couldn't achieve erections so I stopped. Venlafaxine 37.5mg and eventually 75mg helped hugely with OCD, I was amazed and honestly I felt like a part of me was missing because I wasn't constantly going through mental rituals. But, I stopped taking it due to side effects. Dry mouth, trembling hands, sweating a lot, significant issues with recalling memories, any memories I could remember felt like they were not my own. Very difficult to think while I was on it, that probably sounds weird but if you've been on it before I think you know what I'm trying to say. I also had headaches and constipation, but those two went away after the first week of use. But the biggest side effect was it just made me feel dead inside, my personality became extremely flat and the difference was very noticeable to my friends. My voice is already pretty flat but while on it I had multiple people tell me I sounded like a robot, talking in full monotone. My music taste went from primarily listening to metal, to ambient industrial noise. Only the things I hold closest to my heart could elicit any emotional response, and even then it was minimal. Upon discontinuation from 37.5mg I had a few days of intense crying spells and nausea, but no vomiting or brain zaps. Duloxetine 20mg had no effect other than making me fall asleep. Currently I only take bupropion 300mg, I don't know if it's helping all that much but it's the only one that doesn't give me any bad side effects (resting heart rate went up by a few BPM but that's it).

      XOTWOD Thanks, I'm surviving. I have been taking duloxetine since I posted my first comment, about three weeks now. I took 20mg every morning for about 2 weeks, although I skipped a few days at the beginning. For the first week (other than the first time, where I just fell asleep), I had lots of energy and focus, and a reduced appetite, almost as if I had taken adderall (I have a 5mg adderall prescription for ADD but I rarely take it). After about a week of that increased energy, it went back to drowsiness. About a week ago I went up to 30mg and started taking it at night to reduce the drowsiness. At 30mg it has been effective for depression in that it helps with getting the motivation to help yourself, if that makes sense. The effect on OCD is minimal, but it is helping with depression so I'm not complaining. I think it's worth noting that the 30mg capsules are manufactured by a different company than the 20mg ones.

    • @mabeSc
      @mabeSc 7 років тому

      Nice to see that it's actually helping you. By the way *I think* the energy and improvement in depression is due the noradrenaline effects of Duloxetine.

      @MrMagichobo21 7 років тому +1

      Kingtoneable I took 40mg citalopram daily for OCD for about 6 years, from 8 to 14. I discontinued it then because it stopped working for OCD. I also developed depression at that time (before discontinuation but after it stopped working), which I don't remember ever having prior to that. I don't remember the intervals at which I tapered but it was pretty slow, at least one month in total, probably longer. Even then I never experienced any brain zaps, I guess I'll consider myself lucky in that regard. I have no first-hand with benzodiazepines, but congratulations on being clean. A lot of SSRI's can have pretty nasty side effects when you first start, hopefully they will go away after a few weeks. I wish you luck.

    Out of all the SSRI drugs I’ve tried Sertraline was the best for me. No persistent side effects after the first few weeks of introducing into my system. But like every SSRI it eventually made me into an unfeeling hollow person. This was much better than the crippling anxiety and depression I had but also not a very pleasant way to be either. I came off after using for about six years and got some feelings back but the anxiety and depression came with it, the anxiety not so much but the depression is a problem. I’m considering going back on something as life has little joy and I don’t want to feel miserable all the time any more. Thinking of trying a Dopamine raising drug if my Dr will prescribe it (I’m in the U.K.) and see if it helps? If not it may be back on to the Sertraline and into Zombie land again. I remember how good life could be before this all started 25 years ago, I just want that brain back...doesn’t have to be all the time either just a bit.

    I was suffering severely from panic disorder and anxiety, witch was caused by my drug use(a single dose of Molly and Ritalin) I was starting to have suisidal thoughts, and I was afraid of becoming physically addicted to benzos. When I started taking Sertraline, the first week I got worse, It felt like I’m going completely insane, I was legitimately horrified of becoming suicidal and killing myself(I didn’t want to die, but I wanted the suffering to end, it was unbearable).
    It took two weeks for sertrline to kick in for me. When it started working, it was like I came home from war. I can function quite normal again. It took like a month or two to fully work. But after that, I managed to quit benzos, I rarely have panic attacks. I still have mild anxiety almost every day, but it’s nothing compared to before. Sertraline literally saved my life. The fact that I can’t take psychs anymore, and the sexual dissfunction sucks, but it’s beter to survive. I really appreciate this medication. I don’t care if many people hate SSRIs, some people think all pharma is bad. I don’t think so.

Another thing it have done is to totaly kill my Sex drive, and this is a very common side effect sadly. so when I was 20, I tried to od on my Zoloft, and since then (24) I have had long lasting effects of depersonalization and derealization. I also have very numbed emotions, much like malancholy. the happy is there, but it isn't always a sad overtone. so I'm wondering if my 5ht receptors were damaged, or effected due to the neuroplasticity. I have taken quite a lot of psychedelics over the past few years, but they have helped me adjust to the symptoms and learn to be okay with them. so I'm wondering if people that overdose on antidepressants and fry their neuron, can it be helped through neurogenesis or adjusted by pure neuroplasticity?

    • @TheDrugClassroom
      @TheDrugClassroom  7 років тому +1

      Your response isn't typical assuming the sertraline overdose is responsible. I'm not aware of any evidence suggesting a very high concentration of the drug could permanently damage neurons. That doesn't mean some sort of prolonged disruption in activity can be totally ruled out, but we have little to no information in this area. It also means it's unknown what the best course of action would be for fixing the problem other than to treat your symptoms as typical depersonalization/derealization.

    • @sp00g37
      @sp00g37 7 років тому

      thats more or less how I tried to treat it. I figure being tossed on prozac would just cause the same or worse, same with most of antidepressants. I do use thc, and it helps tremendously, it feels like I settle into it. I am interested in Piracetam to see how it would effect me. I am more or less thinking, zoloft has a neurogenesis factor, and im wondering how strong of an agent it could be in harming the 5HT pathways. I have taken 5HTP and it gives me an almost Psilocybin euphoria, just without the psychedelic shift.

I was unable to go out of town like I used to do and visit my godchild for a year and a half. Got on zoloft, and idk if it’s a placebo or not but I’ve been able to mostly gain my normal life back through it. Wellbutrin messing with dopamine. So it have chance to cause hallucination. Also it mess with noreadrelanine (typo). Excessive of this can caused panic attack and anxiety. Wellbutrin is not recommended for schizophrenia, bipolar and MDD with psychosis. So you might recheck back diagnosis with your doctor.

I was on methylphenidate for a while (but never combined with zoloft) and it didn't result in any derealization.

    Hey do you think you could do a video on Propranolol, I was just prescribed it as a preventative for my chronic migraines that I've had for 2-3 years and it seems to work decently well for me except for when I have breakthrough pain for which I'm prescribed imitrex shots and 10mg oxycodone which in combination work amazingly. If you do end up making a video for propranolol thanks a lot! Thanks for all the info about drugs and how they work! Keep up the good work!!

    Just keep in mind if u guys take it, it will be for lifetime.
    Had to use it for 4months, it did nothing while on it, but then i stopped using it and the depression became worse than ever and in addition i had brain zaps, took a year to recover to the state where i was before taking it and im recovering on my own right now which is going fine ( already learned to stop panic attacks and even stop panic induced adrenaline rush at will, but its still tricky ).
    Side effects: Inability to wake up easily + night sweating, i was like glued to bed every morning, before it i was able to jump out of bed and be productive instantly.

    Zoloft was the first psych med I was started on. I couldnt swallow pills at that time, so I had to get it in a liquid form. It must be diluted in either Sprite or orange juice. Upping my dose just a couple milliliters sent me into a wild psychotic break that lasted for hours. Screaming, crying,howling, ripping my hair out in chunks, pulling my eyelashes off, ripping the skin off my arms until it bled, rocking back and forth... it was fucking terrifying... since then, and 5 years later, I still have restless legs, akathesia, from the overdose. Thinking it might have been serotonin syndrome... be careful with this shit, guys.

    Anyone considering to take this here was my experience with Zoloft
    *1st day*
    After a couple hours, felt extremely drowsy and sleepy, nothing bad, it was fun. I felt good.
    *2nd day*
    Felt perfectly normal for the first 6 hours, but my digestive system was overworking, I went through digestion in 2 hours and felt empty 2 hours after eating. After those 6 hours I lost appetite, felt grossed out by everything. Extreme headaches and insomnia at night but still bearable
    *3rd day*
    Woke up with a headache, tired, didn't want to move, back pain. Throughout the day I started feeling more and more anxious. I reached a point of anxiety that I had never reached before in my life. Got extremely anxious, and couldn't eat. The one time I tried to eat that day I inmeadiatly got EXTREMELY nautious, anxious and was sweating, my heart rate was going really fast, and I really think I would have vomited if it weren't because my stomach was empty. After that I hard stopped taking it.
    After 3 days I did experience withdrawals but nothing really too bad
    Was taking ~70Mg each day, tablets were 150Mg cut in half.
