  • Zoloft or sertraline remains among the top 20 prescriptions drugs more than 25 years after its introduction. This anti-depressant belongs to the SSRI - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor - family which includes Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro and Paxil.
Over time, indications expanded beyond depression. Now Zoloft or sertraline is also prescribed for anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder formerly PMS, obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Other off-label uses lacking adequate study include alcoholism, migraine prevention, menopausal hot flashes, obesity, eating disorders, Tourette’s syndrome and premature ejaculation.
Studies suggest all of the anti-depressants provide relatively similar results without any one drug obviously superior to its competitors. In spite of aggressive advertising campaigns suggesting unique improvement with specific agents, reality suggests doctors’ habits, drug company marketing and side effect profile decide which product will be prescribed. Therapy seems to be a hit of miss proposition. If this drug fails to help, another is tried.
Among the more bothersome adverse reactions to Zoloft are loss of sexual interest or ability, weight gain, dry mouth and sleep problems. The serotonin syndrome may occur with Zoloft alone but seems more likely when combined with lithium, MAO inhibitors, other SSRIs, tramadol, amphetamines, lithium or tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, nortriptyline). Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, hallucinations, delirium, seizures, tremor, incoordination, a racing heart rate and elevated body temperature.
Considerable debate surrounds antidepressants like Zoloft. Prescriptions for these drugs frequently originate from brief interactions with a family physician, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant rather than a trained mental healthcare expert following more in depth assessment. As a result therapy often seems misdirected.
A significant number of people experience difficulty discontinuing treatment. Symptoms often are mistakenly confused with relapse of depression. Among the common complaints are dizziness, fatigue, tingling, blurred vision, sleeplessness, electric shock like sensations, agitation and crying spells.
Experts continue to debate whether these drugs offer significant advantages compared to placebo therapy. The vast majority of people treated with Zoloft improve at least somewhat. However relatively few achieve complete resolution of their symptoms. Weighing the benefits against the risks seems appropriate prior to beginning treatment.

I just went up to 100mg last week and it made me feel so much worse than I was before I increased it makes me question the efficacy of sertraline for this wide range of treatments. I was in a horrible car accident in 2018 and had flashbacks, panic attacks, and was severely susceptible to being jumpy at loud noises. I was triggered by the smell of gasoline when I would fill up my car. I would have a loop in my mind of negative cognitions that wouldn't go away. Zoloft helped me more with these symptoms rather than the depression I've had for years. It was a breath of fresh air to not hear the constant negative chatter. It does mess with your sex drive for sure but for me it came back when I got off of it after 6 months of use. I wasn't as gradual with my tapering so I did experience the "brain zaps," or feelings of electric shocks in the brain. They're not painful, but are definitely an unusual sensation. I've tried multiple SSRIs and my experience when coming off of them is emotional. I would cry a lot coming off of them because I would start to actually feel again. These meds can definitely numb you out. While I wouldn't say they were horrible, I'm glad to be off of them.

Zoloft and others I've tried in that anti depressant group. The only thing it done for me was make me lose my emotions and feel the numb to where i just didn't give a crap. I'd much rather feel my emotions and empathy. Other anti depressant group drugs literally made me crazy and mean.

    • @RedRose4141
      @RedRose4141 3 роки тому

I'm so sorry about your PTSD it's a horrible thing to have to live with. Unfortunately the only medications that honestly help with mine are being stigmatized because of people who don't actually need them and abuse them. So many doctors refuse to prescribe them. Even after 3 decades of my medical history proving i don't abuse them they treat me like a drug seeker if i ask for help and even instead prescribed me psych drugs for schizophrenia which have horrific side effects.
I learned real quick not to say my brain won't shut up so i can sleep because they automatically think your schizophrenic. There's a huge difference between being unable to rest n fall asleep because you can't help your mind stop over thinking about things. I get panic attacks and have extreme anxiety which often literally makes me physically ill n mostly from a family member who is so insecure she feels trying to control everyone and everything around her is ok n it drives all the family so crazy that most all of us just try to tone her out and avoid her all together.

@@nicolevonw8101 FYI, I'm glad I didn't take the Zoloft (Sertraline in UK). I climbed out of depression without medication. I've had to work hard to maintain my mental health and I'm proud that I did it by myself. Connecting with people is a much bigger boost than any medication for me. That's only my opinion based on my own experience. The fact that it's only marginally more effective than placebo illustrated to me the power of placebo / positive thinking. I'm in recovery from addiction and I think my depression was stress induced and a 'reactive' episode. Others may benefit from the medication.

@@nicolevonw8101 Hi Nicole. Thanks for your kind words. From what I can tell meds are definitely useful for some people. Others benefit from self help groups. Others benefit from CBT. I didn't do this entirely by myself. I did it without medication but I've had a lot of support. I was in a 6 month rehabilitation programme. I still take part in online group meetings for people in recovery from addiction. I am also still attending occasional courses at a 'Recovey College' which provides us with tools for dealing with life. Don't be shy to ask for help. It doesn't mean you're weak, it means you're wise. Anixety is very common and I'm sure there are groups you can access. It really helps to talk with people who understand what you go through as they have been there too.

Did you stick with the fitness hygeine plan? I feel I'm in an identical situation now to your comment here. PTSD to some extent, and prescribed Zoloft. Looking into increasing exercise, and taking supplements such as GABA.
The one thing I don't want to happen is emotions becoming numb. I'm trying to work painful emotions out of my system. If zoloft numbs said emotions then it will prevent my ability to process them (through, crying, grieving, angering...) Most of me doesn't want to take Zoloft - part of me wonders if it would work, and help me get back to work.

I have no reason or desire to take sertraline. I'm interested because I know so many people that are taking it. Some benefitted and it seems to be the best thing out there that they've been able to find. Others had bad reactions or responded better to other drugs. Unfortunately, serious psychiatric disorders have to be medicated, because not doing so can be even worse. Nothing that works is totally safe, especially long term. Hopefully there'll be better treatments in the future. I've seen some of the side effects of psychiatric drugs; they tend to get worse with time - you really don't want to dabble with them if you don't have to. I haven't seen people on sertraline for near as long as some of the older drugs. I haven't yet seen anyone develop severe side effects, but it's popularity amongst people I know is fairly recent.

Same here. Asked God to show me the way and heal me. Then I started esearching what causes anxiety and all its symptoms. Once I fully understood what was going on and found out it takes time for the anxiety to heal. The healing process started. About a 1 year and couple months healing. But almost back to normal. Tried trintellix for 3 weeks. Didn't do nothing. Month later tried Lexapro for a month. Got worse. Pure poison. Stopped taking benzos for the anxiety and sleep. And just felt the sting and lived life. I got super bad. A constant state of impeding doom but at it's worst. But life goes on. Can't quit. Depression/anxiety is the same thing. Once you stop giving it your attention and stop fearing it/ giving it power. You'll start to heal. Just start living life. It's hard at first but starts getting easier little by little. God healed me. God will do the same if you ask em and believe 🙏

I often wonder if doctors get a kick back for prescribing this junk medication. The ssri's are worse than the benzo's you become tolerant to the drug & you need upped again & again. I had 2 friends from work that was on Paxil not at the same time & they shot them selves & gained a TON of weight! One of them was unable to even get off the drug even at a snail pace. I like this Dr. because he sort of calls out SSRIs for the mostly BS drugs they are. Studies do not back up that they work much better than placebo at all, but they come with side effects and from my experience pretty bad withdrawal/discontinuation syndrome. I think that most people believe that whatever SSRI has the least amount of side effects for them is really "working" better than a different one because the placebo effect is there, but with less side effects so in turn it's working. Also, long term use of these drugs have never once been studied yet I know plenty of people who have been on them for over a decade. When people try to come off they are typically faced with a brutal discontinuation syndrome that can last for a long time and usually it mimics your initial symptoms 100%. This leads to people thinking they are relapsing and so they wrongly assume they "need" the medicine and so they go back on and the withdrawal stops and voila their notion that they "need" the SSRI to be okay is reinforced. Meanwhile, big making billions of dollars off of people year after year and the cycle continues.

The problem with SSRI's in persistent depression is one day they stop working. All of them.

Do you realize the negative hope and doubt your comment instills in people struggling ? I’ve known people on ssri’s for decades and it helps them.

@@AndreS-ie7if It's a personal experience my friend. In some people it stop working. Unfortunately I'm one of them. It's not about negative or positive, it's a fact. By the way there are many other alternatives to SsrI's. Snri's, atypical antidepressants, stabilizers, RTMS, microdosing and new medicines are coming out. So people should be happy for these and not worried if Ssri's stopped working. Peace

Frankly, all medications for depression are fatal. It is advised that you fast for half of the day, exercise daily, and pray to God sincerely only.

zoloft and prozac are the only antidepressants that have ever worked for me. ive tried to come off zoloft twice and needed to go back on. im not sure if it was the withdrawal because the second time i went without it for around a year and was in the worst depressive episode of my life. so im back on it now and doing very well, although the sexual side effects do suck so much. i take wellbutrin for it but it doesnt seem to help too much

@@zincerish It was a rough week for my mental health but overall I'm doing okay. I've been doing pretty well since going back on Zoloft about a year ago. Generally my life is pretty good and I feel satisfied, but I did have a pretty hard week. I'm also an addict in recovery and that has impacted my mental health in additional ways
