I had to take a fast from
It because you see all the bloggers and beauty gurus showing off loui bags and cars and money and all the other things I feel like it's getting too show offy versus just providing great content!! We should be sharing our gifts and not gloating so people can worship you!! Anyway just my opinion lol I love your channel and everything you stand for!! Excited to watch you grow and share your light!!

What you said about comparing yourself to others really hit home. I didn't really notice it until I started my own UA-cam channel, but especially with the numbers there's this tendency to see someone else's number of subscribers or views or followers and get jealous. That's one of the things I'm working on in 2014 -- putting on the blinders and not caring about the numbers.

I totally felt the "down" thing after the holidays. After attending all the UA-cam parties and meet-ups this past year - my world felt so superficial I had to take a step back and reevaluate myself. Take your time girl, do you, and keep making your art ;) Love you! xo

omg I'm absolutely with you. I have a really small number of subscribers but all I'm doing is fliming, editing, posting, answering. But I noticed (one night haha) "you can do whatever you want with your channel". So I decided (for example) to travel this year and I will take the camera with me and will show some amazing places in this world and the emotion that comes with it.

Once again , I feel you. I really do. I am a jewelry designer, I love what I do, but sometimes geting your brand out there and keeping it out there takes a lot of time on all these social networks and you get so lost because all you want to do is to create, share your art and BE . I felt kinda lost at the end of 2013. But I am back on track, I decided that (as far as possible) I am only going to do what makes me happy. and its working :-), Much Luv to you, greetings from Paris. Ameyo

I am, in 2014, re-focusing my focus on myself, my child, my career..... learning to slow down and be patient about improving my mental and physical flaws (fears, caring what others think, doubt, perfection etc.) I do not want this year to be like every other year which has been stuck in a cyclical motion. I will LIVE this year, finally.

This internet world is no joke. I'm nowhere near where you are as far as youtube sucess but when your at an age when your trying to figure yourself out and you have a youtube channel, instagram, twitter, facebook its SOOO hard to keep those voices out of your head. Self doubt is a huge issue of mine. Right now i'm trying so hard to work on myself mentally, physically and spiritually but it seems like success is really dependent on how popular you are. Thank you for always making me feel like I'm not alone. You inspire me so much

Maya thank you for this. I think you have said it yourself over the body of your UA-cam videos, and lucky you. You have the ability to self reflect and modulate for what suits you. Social media gives meaning to so many different people who use it. Cultivating your creativity is so important. If you're only a social media "talking-head", then social media is no different than dare i say, "tv-head" and can lead you down the same road to the land of inertia 9:00-9:03. Don't get me wrong, social media can inspire creativity but it is clear that you are restless and it's good that you are restless. Going on a social media diet is not only healthy but necessary to keep us creatives connected to our senses. Social media is just a platform for creative expression. If you haven't made any deposits in the creative bank lately, not sure that there will be much to take out and share with the rest of us who want to see more of your Shamelessness. Personally, I struggle with self-content because I haven't figured out my own message to the world, but I also haven't developed substantive content that will help me avoid being part of what I see as the beginning social media malaise. I admire all that you do.
About me...I'm am an observer and admirer of those who are unafraid to hussle. Keep following your instincts, they have not steered your wrong yet.

Hey Maya! I've been following you from the beginning when you shaved your hair. It's so refreshing to hear someone else talk about social media the way I've been feeling about it for the past year or so. I got caught up in it while publishing 4 blogs and watching my numbers. I also tried UA-cam but that just wasn't for me! I'm lucky if I got 100 views! LOL....However, blogging started to consume me and it took the fun and enjoyment out of what I loved doing....writing! Needless to say, I still blog but I blog when I want to not because I have to! I'm free to be me!!! I can truly relate and I'm so glad that you're honest with yourself and your audience! I know this is an older video and know you are still working it on UA-cam but it helps to take a break from it every once in awhile. It can be draining and exhausting because you're giving out so much to the world that you have to take time out to replenish your mind, body and soul. All the best to you! Love your videos or whatever you decide to do in the future!

I know this is an old video, but this is fantastic. I couldn't agree with you more. Comparison is the thief of joy, but it's so easy to get caught up in it! I also question myself and my thoughts get muddy, but I always try to remember why I started. If we take out the numbers and the money, it should really be about the fun and excitement of being a content creator. Thanks for the superb video!

Thank you for your honesty, as not many UA-camrs really admit to feeling disenchanted by the whole social media world - because please believe it isn't the way to true happiness. True happiness comes from knowing who you are and being still enough to let Christ be first in your life. Bless x

When you mentioned the "numbers game" you reminded me of Andy Mineo a christian hip-hop artist who has a song called SUPERHUMAN and he says....
"what else could you expect? we obsessed over twitter numbers,
checkin ours, then comparing them to others, like,
the number of likes upon a status is somehow suppose to raise our status..."
at least your aware the pros and cons of social media. More and more we are consumed and become technology robots, rather than living for ourselves we live for others.

  • @DavieneEscourse

I totally agree with you girl. I feel like life is about social media-Facebook ,Instagram,Twitter, etc. People comparing themselves to you based on how much likes they get on a Facebook post, or how much followers they have on Instagram. I feel like sometimes we need to take time out of our life and just chill and be thankful for life, because life is not social media.

See this is why I enjoy your channel Maya. Everything you said I absolutely agree with. A couple of channels I use to follow I had to let go. They got caught up in the "UA-cam" world and started to dilute themselves. Almost to the point where they became so product placed that they disappeared. Change is good. Sometime pressing cntrl-alt-delete isn't as bad as we think.
We all have a path. Good luck Maya. It's already yours. Side note sorry for rambling...lol!

Loved this video. OMG. I think a lot of us are feeling lost and slightly unfulfilled. Your video brings to mind something a wise woman told me: "just because you can do it, it doesn't mean you should". I'm run a design business and sometimes I feel elated and excited that I am creating a brand, something that is truly mine - but other days it feel like I am digging myself into a hole - because it's just so much work and it never ends. Us creative, talented folk (everyone has a talent) have to chose our fields wisely. Or at least be open to change and iteration, which is what you seem to be doing so well. Good luck in LA! Go for it!

This video really gave me that relief I needed to hear... The end of 2013 got myself pumped on starting videos for UA-cam, doing a fashion page on Instagram, as well as many different other apps. I started playing with my camera got a tripod, beginned look for great lighting, looking up editing videos, researching best software to purchase I mean the works.. I haven't start my UA-cam but I started my fashion page on Instagram and was consumed on why I only have so many followers or was losing followers or why no is commenting on my pic... This video absolutely reminded me that I'm trying to do these things because fashion and beauty is what i love show casing. As long as keep doing What I love to so I can make a name for myself, everything will fall in to place.. Thank you

Wow. I love this. I definitely understand how that can be getting caught up with social media and the internet then waking up one day, looking back and wondering, "whoa wait a minute why am I here and why does this not feel the same as it use to," it can really eat up your time and focus without you ever really realizing...but then again everything happens for a reason. There's always larger ladders to climb and explore that allow us to grow and become more of who we are, so never any competition. We can only grow more into ourselves and these moments are essential to our greater lessons and achievements. I've just found your channel today and have watched some of your videos and you speak so much truth, its refreshing. Excited to see more of you just doing you! Peace, girl.

I am totally picking up what you're putting down. As a former network systems administrator I remember the internet before FB, Twitter, etc, back when Yahoo Instant messenger and ICQ was it for social media. With the exception of YT, which can still consume hours, I have completed distanced myself from other forms of social media, if only for, as you have said, the time factor; I could be doing other things, like applying that avocado mask I saw on UA-cam!
But on a serious note, I think you have what it takes to make it in the entertainment industry, Maya. Your videos are fun, your presence is magnetic and you have Charisma. You can't teach personality and you have that in spades. I will be interested to see in what direction your channel goes. I wish you the best.

i'm in the same boat as you maya. i'm trying to restrict being online as much as well. one of the things i'm trying to do is get a journal and read more, write more (as a writer, i've been holding back) and take time to organize and live life on my terms and not through a filter. girllll. DO YOU BOO

You're my inspiration Maya. I'm going through a transitional phase also (post-grad life -_- lol) and you are like this little guiding light there for me (and a lot of others I'm sure)….so much of what you're talking about resonated so much with me right now. I can't WAIT for the vlogs! You have to live life authentically.

    Girl, preach...
I am sitting here wide-eyed, mouth open, when I should be ... um... doing the stuff I get paid for. LOL! But I enjoy your AUTHENTICITY, which is why I take the time out to stop in from time to time. Your concerns are exactly why I've been procrastinating with starting my blog. But BALANCE is the key, as you said. Hugz to you, mama.

love. love. loveeeee.. my thoughts exactly. I participate in social media too (on a muchhhhhh smaller scale) and I often find it draining. Like it's really fun and makes me happy a lot of the time, but often I feel like it's a waste of my physical body, ability and time. I love how you can express yourself so clearly! Love yah Maya, and do you boo!!!

MAYA! You are such a brave woman. I totally understand that you spent all last year Vlogging; because you make exceptional good videos, because you are talented, stylish, artistic, funny, clever, humble and above all a perfectionist. This is why I've been following you since DAY 1 on frugalartist, ever since Andrea Lewis introduced you on her channel. Just sitting here watching you mention the numbers of YT-viewers, that you want to pursue your acting career, do an action web-series, makes me so GLAD! This is why you are an original, because you don't stand still, you keep renewing your life, challenging yourself & being creative. So much respect. I feel like I'm in the same kind of state that you are in right now; too much social media, need to focus and manage my time, so I can do the things I really want. I'm currently working on a short film, I write continuously on a TV series, and I need to complete my website, so I can get the jobs I want. All in the making.

I have never been into social media but since my niece came to live w/me, I have been watching UA-cam makeup video and on....and on... So I feel you being caught up for hours. But, I was immediately drawn to your channel. You are very SPECIAL and have a GIFT. My prayer for you is to be committed to your acting and aggressively seek photography. Do you boo!!! I am taking a HUGE leap myself in Feb to San Fran, CA from NC. Many Blessings to you Boo!!!.....

    Things I'm working on:
    Developing better self-confidence
Developing dance choreography and getting out of my shyness to ask dancers to be in my pieces.
Figuring out what my career should be. I graduated with my BS in spring'13 and am currently doing a year long paid (thank God) fitness internship in Boston, but once this is over I have to find something else to move onto. I honestly have no idea what I want to do! I have interests, but nothing is sticking as far as me committing to it. Sigh. So that is what I am working on.

Truthfully spoken!!! Social media is definitely getting out of control and taking over people's lives. So glad to know I'm not alone in feeling like it's becoming too much. Especially from someone like you :) Great for getting to know things or searching for how-to's but people actually LIVE in social media and it is definitely a lot of "hype." God bless you in your journey!!! You've been amazing to watch whenever I need inspiration or a smile or laugh :) You're amazing :)

Thank you for this Maya. This has been my struggle on YT for a while, I'm a mom, artist, student, work full time etc. and had to remove myself from some social media forums because I found (like you said) people were more interested in my beauty side than my authentic side (blogging). It made me bit emotional and can be hard. By the way I saw your portfolio waaaay before you even cut your hair and you are a phenomenal photographer. do you boo

Once you figure out what you want (which you already have), organize everything you do so that every action you make is a step closer to where you wanna be. It's going to be more difficult trying to juggle more than one thing, but if you want it bad enough you'll figure out a way to get it. I am a writer and aspiring filmmaker and I was searching how to edit as I am new to editing, and luckily I found your video on how you edit your videos. Just an hour ago, I was on the phone complaining to a friend that I have written 3 short films in the last 2 months but still feel like I'm not getting anything done. I shortly snapped out of it, ordered a new charger for my digital camera and am now practicing editing with some videos from 2012. I once heard from a prominent writer that amateurs rely on inspiration, professionals rely on discipline. It's all love.

I love your openness and honesty...its refreshing. I just started picking up my UA-cam game because I am one who loves social media BUT I learned a LONG time ago to not allow it to control my life. I post when I want and I get on it occasionally although with that being said I am still active. I am a mother who homeschools, I am a wife, I am a holistic esthetician, I make videos, I cook, I clean, and all other things in between...BUT I believe in LIVING my LIFE FREE and stand by an 80/20 rule in everything I do...80% healthy holistic living and 20% other randomness. Any who THANK YOU for posting this and your videos already inspire me (I just subscribed today)...I'm done..much love

I have been watching your journey and you have grown so much mentally. I am starting my own UA-cam channel for my own personal journey that I have started this year about experiencing new things. I think it's a wonderful idea for you to create a series because you are inspiring allot of people to do good for there life. We need people like you to document the good that happens in life because there's so much negativity on the news and in the world being broadcasted that no one knows about the people doing good in the world.

Thank you so much for this video! Gosh I've been feeling the same way. Currently taking a social media detox. And compartmentalizing almost everything.
Looking forward to more Shameless Sunday's. And it would be awesome to see more vloggy type of videos - I, personally, find them the most interesting plus the sit-downs. Pinning this video!

I appreciate your honesty and just the genuineness of all that you are, that you stand for! Yes, social media can be a bit much but I can only imagine it from your standpoint. The content you produce is well worth it and is something I always look forward to. But like all things that matter, we need to constantly nurture it... Whether it be you tube or your acting career, its your choice, your life, your happiness. That's what I'm going to try and do this year and every year. Nurture my relationships with family and friends, my health (which I really need to do), my home/work environment, and my spirituality. Thank you, Maya for always bringing joy to my day! Words to live by: Do you boo! Be shameless! ❤

Word UP!! I've been feeling exactly the same & you know what you're so right. The world's gonna keep doing the world. You just need to focus on doing you and living your life rather than getting caught up with online stuff. Too many people are in the whole fight to be famous. It's just draining to watch and honestly it is just numbers & I hate that it's like that. Imma be doing the same as you, cutting down on social media time & getting back to the things I love doing. Thanks for this Maya ♥ Luhh you, Do you Boo :* .x

You are probably one of the truest youtubers out there. You go straight to the grain. I really appreciate that. You inspired me to maybe take a chance at you tubing, although I have been my own worst critic. As for people who are criticizing you regarding your hair or what have you, I see that as envy or misunderstanding. (Now I am ranting). But thank you for being you and for inspiring so many girls, women, people like us who need to learn to believe and be you boo! God bless ;)

It doesn't have to be a web series, per se, but maybe a series called "Do you, boo!" where you're interviewing folks who are "doing them" (similar to the interview you did in LA of the tattoo artists). Find local NYers or travel out the city/state and get chatting with artists, writers, creators, stylists, etc.

This video is so on point. So man UA-camrs are doing the same thing. It gets boring after awhile, but can you really blame them they all wanna get paid. It should always be about who YOU are and not comparing yourself. Currently I am working on moving out and moving up. Doing things bigger this year. I am working on keeping me happy. Love you Maya!
