  • The weird and wonderful world of watches is full of characters with the greatest degrees of passion. And the very best of them are not only deeply thoughtful and incredibly committed to the pursuit of collecting, but also to the idea of sharing all he or she may have learned over the years. Consider the likes of John Goldberger, Jason Singer, and Alfredo Paramico, for example, who have been dedicated players on the high-end auction scene long before the likes of most of us, and took the time to share all they'd learned with us here on Talking Watches. Today I am so pleased to introduce you to another such man - a watch collector of the absolute highest order, Mr. Patrick Getreide, or, the owner of the OAK collection.

    The most appealing aspect of Talking Watches are the stories that accompany the people and the pieces. This lacks in that regard unfortunately.

    • @grantchallinor5263

      Totally agree. The Talking Watches that really "work" are as much (or more) about the person (enthusiast/collector) and their stories about their watches than anything else. Some of the best "Talking Watches" episodes (in my opinion) are with people who don't have "stellar" watch collections but who are very interesting people with a great story to tell about the emotional attachment they have to their hobby or individual watches - Gary Shteyngart and David Williams being great guests in this regard.
      Other guests on Talking Watches like Alfredo Paramico and John Goldberger, who have amassed incredibly rare (and very valuable) watch collections, "gave" a lot of themselves in their episode and their enthusiasm for the hobby really came across - both very charasmatic guys who probably enjoy "the chase" to track down a particularly rare watch almost as much as owning it... This episode was really stale in comparison. We learned little or nothing about Patrick Getreide in the video - other than he's obviously a very wealthy man.

    The quality of Mr. Getreide’s Patek Phillipe collection speaks for itself. The collection reflects a great legacy in watchmaking. It is hard to condense everything (including the underlying vision for the larger collection in its entirety) into 10 minutes. TheHenry Gray tourbiillon deserved 30 minutes on its own. To those who have expressed comments about the elite nature of the collection, such is life. Does one stay away from a definitive Cezanne show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art because they will never be able to personally own an original Paul Cezanne? Of course not. No matter if one collects only Illinois, Hamilton, Swatch, Seikos, or whatever, seeing the 50+ Patek references together as a whole is inspiration for what people with less expansive pocketbooks can do when they focus in on affordable watches which give them bliss. There are vintage watch collectors of a certain vintage and temperament who have never paid very much for any single reference but whom have developed breathtaking collections.

    • @kwokziyi4937
      @kwokziyi4937 2 роки тому +3

      Agreed. The purpose of this video isn't to flex on the general public (if it were, only the most popular models of the Patek range would be shown). This is closer to a museum experience and they do their best to highlight the importance of a collection as a whole and the legacy of the brand.

    This one missed the mark for me, I think, because the collection felt so impersonal and sanitized. This collection is objectively impressive, but I've always felt that what made "Talking Watches" special was its ability to illuminate a common thread of emotional relatability between watch enthusiasts, regardless of their collecting experience. The episodes featuring Moki Martin, Daniel Dae Kim, and Howie Kendrick are emblematic of this quality. But having now heard Mr. Getreide "Talk Watches" for 11 min, I can't say that I have any understanding of his personal affinity for any of these pieces beyond their objective rarity.

    • @_DD2024
      @_DD2024 2 роки тому +1

      True. But he was honest in the beginning of the video when he said it’s take “ Time and Money” . So he’s clearly a collector that simply can afford these. You’re right… he has no emotional attachment to these. He doesn’t even remember his first watch.

    I don't get why people are knocking on Patrick for not having a 'story' with every Patek he owns. Also, not everyone who appears on Talking Watches has to be an interesting conversationalist. The sheer insanity of his collection is interesting enough. I can’t afford even one strap for any of these watches, never mind the watches themselves but it doesn’t matter. The passion and dedication these men exude is wonderfully infectious. I hope Hodinkee release an hour+ long version of this video.

    Would be good if the watches got more camera time….looks like we only saw about 10% up close

    You thought it was necessary to introduce Jack Nicklaus, but not Patrick Getreide? The best part of Talking Watches is learning about how someone's career corresponds with their collection. Alfredo Paramico should really be the model for these - get a peek into their life, and clips that showcase their enthusiasm.

    I LOVE watches and collecting. This is both glutenous, and proof money does not equate to presentation skill.

    Incredible collection on every level. Shame they didn't have more time to explore it in more detail.
    That pink 1518 with gold bracelet is 'most expensive wristwatch ever' territory.
    I know it isn't actually the most expensive wristwatch ever sold, but if it came up for auction, and if it is really one of a kind, it wouldn't be far off.
    I wonder what watches Patrick actually wears. It would've been a good question to ask him.

    Pretty wild how one person owns this many rare pieces. Can you imagine the enjoyment 600 people would have just owning one of these watches? Hard to relate….

    beautiful collection, but felt sterile, I could not feel a connection to the person or the watches. I prefer when you guys sit down and have a conversation with a watch lover. Not just a rich hoarder.

    This was unbelievable!! I prefer a video like this without some long drawn out story with each watch. Why does a watch have to have a story. This guy just loves collecting and has arguably built one of the most impressive collections in the world

    This is the old white Swiss version of talking watches with Pras. Here's a load of expensive watches........ok.........Why did he buy them? What's the reason that he's getting rid? Only part of the collection talked about? they're all perfect, does that mean he doesn't wear them? are the 'piece uniques' direct from Patek? I just don't get this video at all - there's a total absence of a story here outside of - meet a rich fella and his 'man' to talk about some watches he's selling.

    Whole different level collecting than most of us are used to. I won’t knock him for having a curator assist him with the purchases.
