Talking Watches With John Goldberger, Part 2

- One week in Geneva (of the hundreds I've spent there) stands out for me above the rest. The year was 2013, I'd been asked to be a sitting member of the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve for the first time - the first digital journalist, the sole American, and certainly the youngest at the time. That same week, a young Aurel Bacs would be putting on the first thematic watch auction called Daytona, Lesson One. It would be the first time we'd see crazy results of Rolex watches, including the first time a Daytona would crack $1 million (it was an Oyster Sotto - remember when those were cool?). As an aside, our dek on that recap story was "50 Watches Sold, 50 Records Set" - yeah, those were heady times.
It would also mark the first of probably - nay, decidedly - too many birthdays that I spent in Geneva instead of at home. And also my first visit to the Geneva Freeport (to see Alfredo Paramico's "Precious Time" collection, which was truly mind-altering). And finally the weekend we would film Talking Watches with a particular tall, dapper Italian collector who was relatively unknown to the watch collecting public: John Goldberger. We actually filmed on my birthday at a cafe next to the Hotel des Bergues where the Christie's sale was taking place - we put it out a few weeks later, and well, the watch collecting world has never been the same.

Sometimes before i fall asleep i think about john opening a priceless rolex case back with a butter knife after wiping it on his sleeve.
😂😂
Cheese knife
This move changed my whole perspective 😂
Charcuterie knife
As do I
This man, beside John Mayer already have 2 different talking watches for almost a decade. Glad to see Him still healthy and strong. Respect sir.
Pras has two as well.
@@alanpark8345 Pras had 2 episodes quick
This collection is better than John mayer's.
And both the Johns are better persons than that criminal
What I respect is that he can enjoy a Patek 570 or a unique Rolex 6265 in white gold but is also at home wearing a Casio G-Shock. Complete respect for a real old-school gentleman.
Whats that Gshock tho? Havent found that specific configuration 🫣 merci
So glad they incorporated the cheese knife into this video. Possibly the most epic moment in taking watches history.
That Zenith with its bracelet looks stellar
Yeah.. even the bracelet looks amazing
Best talking watches guest by far. Glad to see him back.
Million dollar collection and he rocks a Tudor, Longines, and G Shock. Just love it.
Function over form with Mr. Goldberger.
More like tens of millions of dollars collection
The legend is back!!! 🚀
What a inspiration that man is, please do not wait 10 years to get him back next time.
How long have we waited for this! Thank you Hodinkee!
10 years apparently.
Who knew seeing a video thumbnail could bring me so much joy!?!?!
What we’ve been waiting for… the Maestro is back!
The first was the OG best talking watches episode ever. Can't believe it has been 10 years.
Never clicked on a Hodinkee video so fast!
What a treat! Ben and John back together again. John is draped in humility and is the epitome of Italian Savoir Faire! Love the matching jeans jackets! I first noticed Ben’s then John one upped him with a Jean jacket with a lapel! Awesome guys. Plus the watches were amazing. The hand painted Cartier dials! Chef’s kiss!
We need a round table with John G, John M, and Ben. Cmon!!
Don’t sleep on Clive biver
Refreshing to watch.
Always a treat to listen to mr. Goldberger 🤩
The knife episode must be legendary because all the memories it brings to our minds. My father and grandfather used to open their watches to show their children the heart of the machine.
Ive been following Hodinkee since the very first talking watches episode. In fact, this series is what grew the passion for me. Lately the content that has been produced just has not really captured my attention like it used to. I am not saying I lost faith in Hodinkee... but if I had, this video right here would have completely restored it!!!! Outstanding video, so great to see Ben back at it in front of the camera and thankful John Goldberger shared his collection with us once again. Thank you Hodinkee.
Great to see you again, Ben. Great piece!
This is the good old Hodinkee ! Auro and Ben, thank you 🙏🏻
Christmas came early this year! ❤️❤️❤️
A real life “Most Interesting Man In The World”. Few people talk with such conviction
finally an actual hodinkee video
Great episode. Undoubtably social media has garnered immeasurable interest in watch collecting since Part 1. Fascinating to see John's relentless hunt for the prime models. He's definitely a watch collecting maven. Part 3 in ten years.
The legend is back. I stopped watching Talking Watches after the Bethenny Frankel episode but this has just popped up on my feed a few years later. How to refreshing. JG is one of the great collectors out there and this collection was amazing. Loved that El Primero on his wrist!
Literally nothing to not love here. Pocket watches. Stunning vintage pieces galore. Ben back in the saddle. The old man disclosing that despite a probably $50mil collection, his go to is a Tudor black bay. And, I defy anyone to show me someone else rocking an Hermes pocket square with a Canadian tuxedo. Epic!
Ben, this was classic. It’s always great to see Mr. Goldberger’s collection. He gave some excellent advice which is absolutely true. Thank you.
What a pleasure! I remember watching the first episode like it was yesterday!
I busted when he said he was wearing a Tudor. Got mine on, the BB58 is literally perfect.
An absolutely beautiful episode.
Glad to see Ben and Mr. Goldberger back in action!
A lot of vintage stuff like this is easy for me to admire, respect, and appreciate, but at the same time it's not the sort of thing I'd focus on to collect for myself. But man, that planetarium Omega is right up my alley. Time to start saving...
I feel the same way. But so cool to see that he wears modern Tudor and a few others also
That moment with the knife... so much was expressed in that gesture...
What can i do to get a John Mayer return to talking watches...i could honestly listen to him talk watches for 3 days straight
He’s a true legend. That’s what collecting watches should be about
They did a Part 2 with him already, they are doing the rounds.
@@edjustice7755 I've seen it. He's 1000% better than all the others and he should have at least 5 videos by now
The anniversary is coming up- they may release it soon
This is your reply to a John Goldberger video?
Mr. Montanari is a legend. The looks, the style, everything.
Wow, what an inspiring gentleman. That's the kind of man I aspire to become. Elegant, charming, witty, classic, yet contemporary at the same time, and an absolutely bonkers watch collection.
The best advise from the GOAT.
Quality and inspiring. Bravo!
Great chat, thanks for these episodes
What fun! Really enjoyed this and all the others.
I’d love to sit down and talk to this man about everything! This was pure gold! 👍🏼
Nice to see him wear the Bronze BB 58. Always cool to recognize other people wearing and appreciating the same watch as me.
Can't believe I've been watching since the 1st. A great talker and rolodex.
That beginning advice is solid. 👍
Lovely collection. Well curated taste
HODINKEE at its best. Encore🥂. Wish Ben would start his own channel Just Talking Watches. First time I’ve tuned to HODINKEE in a long while.
What a inspiring personality of this amazing watch collector 😊👌
Mr. Goldberger is still sharp as a tack. Great interview, Ben! 👏👏
Such an incredible collection 👌
Thanks guys for making the magic operate again!
10 years since the last one. Gosh I’ve been following for 12 years!
Awesome video, good to see ben again!👏
nice work.. this is one of the best
Yes!!! I love John!
I never thought this day would come!🎉
Great episode 👏
Excited to watch this (:
Please don't make us wait this long again, great video
You know the man is a serious collector when his mental exchange rate confused 15,000 with 1,500 USD and he didn't have a heart attack. Fantastic collection!
Its incredibly to have a similar watch to Goldberger. My Panerai "California" from 1943 would be a nice match for this TW
Damn this was good, and im glad to see the watch that is on my bucket list for the next year - Longines sector dial heritage 😅
I've waited for this episode for so long.
Best video on UA-cam since part one came out.
Just thank you!
Thanks for this, and i am very happy that you have chosen portuguese music, Fado
Comes in the right time!!
Bravissimo Auro!
Love, love, love!
Hard to believe its been 9 years since that Video I remember it like it was last week. Wow.
Please do a talking watches with your collection, Ben!
True elegance!
For people don't know him, this guy is considered the most important collector/expert in the world for vintage watches...and yes this a small piece of his collection....
Great episode. 👍
Love it, always nice to return to old friends and learn more.
Lots of spam comments infiltrating this space, the bots are out, beware.
That denim blazer is so cool.
thank you again for posting and have a nice day and happy holidays 2022//2023..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The two John Mayer and John Goldberger talking watches episodes I can watch again and again 🔥 👌
not a bot.. nice work & rock solid produciton..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not long enough. I want to hear him talk for hours.
Legends
Love Goldberger, this reminds me of when Hodinkee was a company I actually wanted to support.
A couple more hours of this please. Also-Great eyeglasses Ben. What are they?
I loved his first talking watches...lets see if he whips the knife out to open a caseback this time lol. Great collector and I love the way he talks about his pieces...this one should be good.
Would love to know what he plans to do with his collection, when he passes on. I would love to his entire collection in a museum or something.
That zenith is just cool, it’s insane
"the watches are rarer than money"....
let that one sink in
This man comes out with something legendary every video, first the knife opening a vintage Rolex, then he gives his credit card for a $1,500 auction, and didn’t realize he payed $15,000 but still just shucks it off like it’s nothing. Goat 🐐
"they made only 10 examples" proceeds to slap the bracelet against the table. alpha move
Why are these so short? And why does Ben only show up once a year?
It’s like Rolex. You can never let too much premium product loose to ensure it stays premium & in high demand… 😉
This is why we fell in love with Hodinkee
that set of pocket watches are incredible
Thank God Ben is doing this again. Good Lord.
Excellent video!
ps. You need to auction the knife asap. Ben has said "soon" too many times... The man wants see the damn thing go under the hammer :)
You can see ben's awe with the zeniths piece. 10:32
The $5 million Daytona Super Frankenstein!
Nearer to $6m and reflects very badly on all concerned.
Is it me, or was that a lot of denim? Either way, a great conversation between two legends. I also enjoyed the discussion about pocket watches. Thank you much!
Never clicked so fast
A true collector
This is what I’m subscribed to hodinkee for
