    Forgot to say: The Cockpit view in Need for Speed 3 doesen't work with a Voodoo Banshee card, also with the latest patch!

      That was my only problem with my Banshee back in the day and I was really angry about it doubting EA's capability since it was one of the games we bought the whole system for. Many hours wasted trying to make it work. In the meantime however I read some claims that it can be made to work but unfortunately I can't find my notes about that currently :-(

      Same with NFS2 SE

    It wouldn't be a proper showcase without NFS3 and NFS4 running on glide.
    Just perfect.

    Just gave myself a treat with an Elsa Victory II Banshee, it'll fit my PII-350 build nicely

    I had an AMD K6-2 450Mhz with a VoodooBanshee PCI back in the day. I played a LOT of Unreal1 and UnrealTournament with that machine, pitty you didn't benchmark them with this setup this time around. Interesting also you uploaded this video as yesterday i finally upgraded that machine with a Geforce2 MX400 PCI, 19 years later...better later than never i guess. It went from 300 3dmarks 2001 to about 700 3dmarks :)

    I just built a machine with almost the same specs. I have a 550 but it is only running at like 512 or something due to the motherboard limitations. I am excited to try some of these games that I never even heard about!

    mine would get so hot, I could feel it through the case; one day I got BSODed and heard a muffled sound from the inside, turned out the heat-sink fell off, huh (Banshee survived though); after that happening I made sure all my 3dfx cards had proper active cooling

    This is terrific, thank you for sharing! I'm a little surprised you didn't set gl_flashblend 1 for Quake II - the Banshee's lack of multitexturing really hurts when dynamic lights start flying.

      All is standard, no console command tweak. Only the 3DNow! Patch is installed. It runs not bad on the Banshee, always over 25 fps, playable back in the 90s. :)

    Glad to see new video! Feels like Banshee faster than Riva TNT. Quake 2 runs not so smooth with Dechutes 450.

      Thx! :) I have also installed the 3DNow! Patch for Quake 2. Should give more performance on AMD K6-II/III systems.

    Great video! Nice to see som K6 love :)
    I just finished my project, benchmarked all "relevant" graphics cards I own on my K6-2+ 600 to see what works best on this beloved, but slow CPU :) Don't have a Banshee tho :( But I Ended up with a spreadhseets with 12 graphics cards in four different benchmarks. Will be up on Retro Machines soon.

    If the Banshee had a second TMU it whould be a excelent graphics card, but that way it whould hurt V2 sales... It just doesn't have the power to handle 1024x768 glide gaming...

    • @3DfxAslinger
      @3DfxAslinger  5 років тому +1

      You also can see this in Quake 2, but it's still playable.

      @Ion Roman The games that where lauched in the same time that the Banshee was launched run poorly at 1024x768 with good graphical quality because in 1998/99 games where moving to multi-texturing and in some games a single V2 could be faster than a Banshee with both cards runing at 800x600 because of the V2 second TMU... In older games from V1 time, the Banshee was faster than the V2 because it's higher clocks and those older games using single-texturing... That said the V2 it's a better all-rounder than the Banshee

    • @3DfxAslinger
      @3DfxAslinger  5 років тому +1

      The Banshee was a Price/Performance card in 1998. The Banshee also scales very good with fast CPUs, as you can see in my Banshee vs. Riva TNT video on a Pentium III-S Tualatin with 1400 MHz. ;)

  • @3dfxvoodoocards6
    @3dfxvoodoocards6 5 років тому +1

    Excellent video. The Voodoo Banshee was a great card for 1998, the performance was similar to the Voodoo 2 and TNT1 but the price was lower. The 22 bit filter was also a great feature, present only on the Banshee until the release of the Voodoo 3.

    • @rasz
      @rasz 5 років тому +1

      Wouldnt call it a great card, great bargain is more appropriate.
      Doesnt fit K6-III+/500 cpu one bit, it was late to the party and expensive for what it delivered.

    • @3DfxAslinger
      @3DfxAslinger  5 років тому +1

      The Banshee was faster than a Voodoo 2 in non Multitexturing titles, because of the disappearance of one TMU unit, Quake 2 for example. The biggest advantage at that time was the price-performance ratio of the Banshees and a own 2D core.

    • @3dfxvoodoocards6
      @3dfxvoodoocards6 5 років тому +1

      @@rasz the most powerfull cards until the release of the Voodoo 3 and TNT2, were the Voodoo 2, Banshee and the TNT1. The single Voodoo 2 and TNT1 were overall not really faster than the Banshee. The Banshee had overall aproximatelly the same performance as single Voodoo 2 and TNT1 but was cheaper than both of them and also had the 22 bit filter. Only the Voodoo 2 SLI was truly faster but is was also 3x more expensive. So yes, the Banshee was a great card for 1998, I would even say it was the best one, exept the Voodoo 2 SLI of course.

    The Banshee is a good partner for a K6-2 or K6-3 system. Voodoo3 is better for a Pentium III until 700-800MHz.

      The focus on this video was, to show 3dfx Glide games (except Need for Speed :D ), that are not so often seeing here on youtube. I will do a separate video of more Unreal engine based games on this system in the future. If you want to see a small scene on the Banshee: You can see the Unreal FlyBy castle scene in my other video "Banshee vs. Riva TNT".
