AMD K5-PR200 133 MHz - 3dfx Voodoo Rush running Games from 1996/1997!

  • Some 3D accelerated Games from 1996/97, running on a Socket 7 system with AMDs fastest and never officially released K5 CPU, the PR200 with 133MHz (overclocked PR166) and the not so popular 3dfx Voodoo Rush with Alliance AT25 2D core! The used PR166 runs perfectly fine as a PR200 and also with undervolting from the default 3,52V@3,3V! All this retro hardware was from the year 1997 (AMD K5 PR166 Release: January 1997)! The Voodoo Rush should be the successor of the original Voodoo Graphics, but could never prevail. About 10% slower than the Voodoo Graphics, but with a build in Triangle Setup engine, which can help slower CPUs with a weak FPU to achieve a better performance!

Brings back a lot of memories, back then I assembled my own PC, combining AMD K6-200MHZ +32MB RAM+Gigabyte GA-586TX2+S3 Virge DX, later on I bought my first 3D accelerator: Voodoo 1, the result was AWESOME!!!
By the way, there's a small story about Voodoo Rush, actually it didn't occur on me, it's my classmate, back then he bought a Voodoo Rush, but not for 3D gaming, he used his PC to play Red Alert. The reason he bought Voodoo Rush was because it has more RAM than his existing display card, which only has 1MB as I remember, and it did perform much faster in Red Alert with Voodoo Rush!!

the voodoo rush actually gets worse performance that the voodoo 1 even though its only 4 megs.Cause the voodoo 1 being only a 3d accelerator is able to focus all of the gpu power to 3d instead of 2d and 3d.I have both of these cards, i actually have several of them lol

The Voodoo rush has no 2d part, so it is not true. Voodoo rush cards mostly did have alliance 2d chips and just took over the 3d part like a usual Voodoo 1 would do. Further more the voodoo rush offered a few more features that helped on lower cpus. The main reason for the lower performance was simpley the lower core clock.

Something about the K5 and Voodoo makes them work together really well. I tested a PR133 with a Voodoo1 vs Riva128, and Voodoo1 came out on top in all games tested, despite Riva having triangle setup. Maybe it's the low CPU overhead of the Voodoo.

I also have tested the IDT Winchip C6/2 200, AMD K6/K6-II 200, Cyrix 6x86MX PR233 and Pentium-S 200 / 200 MMX. The K5 was my favourite. I also have a K5 PR150, but is not good for overclocking. PR166 was unstable with the PR150, so I have looked for a better K5 CPU that also run stable with PR200 speed and had the luck to get a PR166 with the better C stepping. Real PR200 K5s are very heavy to find...

for Glide and "minigl" games(a wrapper that let specific games run ogl on glide hardware..not a true ogl driver) the perf tended to be better for a few reasons...glide is a low level API, it has direct hardware access, also the minigl wrappers for games tended to be made by 3dfx so were very well optimized for the hardware.
the PowerVR PCx2 cards are actually a bit better then the voodoo for games that support powersgl(quite a few titles of the day did, its very similar to what was used for the arcade hardware the pcx2 is based on so...many game houses had exp with it anyway..)
i would love to see the PowerVR based equiv of the Rush tested, the Apocalypse 5d, unlike the Rush, the 5d also had one of the best 2d chipsets of the day, pair it with a voodoo/voodoo2sli and.. you would have the best of both worlds..
as to nVidia, their drivers back then were not the best optimized, you really needed a k6-2 or better if you wanted optimizations out of nvidia cards..

Nice video as always. I like retro pc gaming hardware as you. Rush is rushed. Nice to see it works, but single voodoo1 probably performs better. Is nice to test some socket7 AMD's, but personally I think MMX intructions and Voodoo is just it. For example period correct P55C Pentium 233Mhz MMX (june 1997) + Voodoo1 (1996-7). GlQuake will feel excellent and play well on it, especially with HX or TX chipset

    "build in Triangle Setup"
I know Rush was often advertised that way, but even 3dfx Glide documentation says things like: "performance degradation on platforms (e.g. SST-1 and SST-96) that don’t have a triangle setup unit."
SST-96 Specification Changes from SST-1 lists only one triangle affecting difference - Clipping, obvious considering SST-1 had to be modified for windowed modes.

    • @3DfxAslinger
      @3DfxAslinger  4 роки тому

Vsync can also not be disabled on the SST-96, says the SST-96 technical spec document . Triple Buffering is the only option, but some games like GLQuake or F1 Racing simulation in this video, are flickering, after enabling this feature.

:-) I also skipped getting a Voodoo Graphics or Rush which I thought about pimping my Pentium 100@120 with back in the day. A year later I got a Pentium II and I ordered that one with a Banshee. The shop choose a Creative 3D Blaster Banshee AGP as the model of card and I was very happy with it until I could afford the Voodoo5. I still have that Banshee card and a duplicate which my best friend bought for himself in 1999. Both still work despite it's passive cooler hooray. The Monster Fusion in contrast has active cooling which really makes sense on a Banshee. Greetings!

@@armorgeddon I rocked the fusion PCI for a little over a year in my rig until I came across a bare OEM Voodoo 3 3000 for $35 at the local computer fair I couldnt turn that down! 3Dfx_Aslinger I have anything against K5, I’m sure that if there would Pentium 133, or something like that, in this build with Rush, the result could be very same, it is the Rush what can’t accelerate games with enough speed.

I had a Pentium 90 with a Voodoo 1 4MB in 1997 and also played this game, but don't remember how it went. The enabled triple buffer gives a little bit smoother experiences in F1 Racing Simulation, but also shows a flickering in this game, as you can see on the screen edges.
