I watched 'Departures' last night. It was one of the most incredibly moving films, I've seen in a Very Long Time. At the end, with my eyes welled up, I said to myself, "this is why I love movies - This is Art.". And the Music! Was just Beautiful. I woke up w/the cello solo in my head. A True Masterpiece.
hearing this theme is like a trained response to me. i always have warm tears falling by the end. this movie will always be one of the most touching to me
after watching this movie more than seven times, i stopped watching because the amount of tears i shed doesnt change for the same scenes. but, every time when i see or think of the father's blurred face or when he takes the pebble from little daigo and gives him the big one, i cant stop crying.
The rock WRECKED me. My father and I don't have the best relationship and things with a father & son relationship tend to really affect me. The little rock falling out of his hand tore me up. Great movie.
This movie has been an essential part of one of the most meaningful and beautiful days of my life...I felt so alive that day, I breathed every second of it
the melody of this cello solo is so melancholy and touching. I like it so much. When I listen to it every time, I am immersed in its imagination and saddening melody.
I originally chose to watch this because of the cello, my favorite instrument, but was moved to tears by the story. Such a beautiful film -I wish we had encoffiners here that took such care. When he was working on his father I suddenly remembered my own father's funeral only six months ago, and how "wrong" he looked- his face so sunken in. I sobbed. This process was so artful and caring and respectful, and a wonderful way to remember a loved one before sending them on to meet the next life.
i love this movie..it's the second thing to inspire me to better myself playing cello when i seen him play. The other to inspire me is the girl whom game me more than just that.Happiness and love will take you a long ways.So when the time comes..our departure will surely have been a meaningful one
NGl, I've heard the movie being praised multiple times so I went in with a kinda "Aight probably hyped but lets see"-attitude and to my surprise, no. It was not hyped. All praised was truly deserved. I got the feeling after the opening scene in the snowy landscape "Dis gon' be real good" and indeed it was. Surprisingly sweet and wholesome movie, albeit a bit sad. Truly a gem that's not spoken about enough.
@Smilingiskool It's true, but if you watch the extras on the DVD, it says he actually learnt how to play the cello over the filming time so that he looked more realistic. There are some parts of this film where the fingering and bowing match up almost perfectly! I think that's definitely dedication to the role! He also spent some time at a genuine encoffinment place learning how to do it properly.
saw this for the first time today. don't know what is more moving, the story line or the soundtrack. both brought me to tears. had to go back to this scene once you see the rock scene at the end.....
I haven't even seen this movie but my family raved about it and the music in it, from what I've heard of it is absolutly breath taking....its reasons like this that I want to learn how to play cello...my mom says I already play enough but I LOVE this instrument
First time I watched this, I didn't cry...I questioned if I had emotion, then I showed it to my parents while they were visiting for the holidays and they balled which made me ball. I am human after all!!!
When I saw the aftermath of the earthquake & tsunami in Japan, & lately, the threat of radiation, I thought of the dead...those who drowned and some taken back to the sea. It is heartbreaking for the relatives of those who died & the manner in which they are buried. This movie shows the sacredness of the ceremony for the dead...and yet, that ceremony has to be given up for the piles of bodies that had to be cremated... the ashes of whom are mixed with one another.
I love this movie.... Every time I watch it, as soon as it's over, I'm like, "O__O Must... go... practice!" x3 I need this sheet music! Such a nice song.
This is th best film i've ever seen and yes, it brings any everso mentaly storng man to shit brix. seen it about 5 times on tv, and it makes me cry every time.
It creates an interesting obsession. This movie very gentle and deep. Love.
I am watching this movie right now on the TV and I like it :D Can someone tell me how this song is called and who wrote it? On the paper with the music i can read something with faraways or something like that?
@cellopiano100 Hi, I agree. But do you know the exact name? I would like to research it here or thru internet, Japan. Willing to share. I think it's possible. Thank you...and good luck to you.
Amazing work by Yojiro Takita. This is how a real movie is made. Easily one of the best films i have ever seen. 5/5
10 percent agreed
as in 100 percent
Yes, a moving movie indeed.
I too wish that all movie are made like this.
There’s so much Funeral humor that they could have added though

i hate crying...why do i keep watching this over and over again?
not only you!!!
Because crying relief you
It’s a good cry

I only came to know about it from Roger Ebert's blog. Glad I watched it. So many great movies are left unwatched.
Joe is the only musician who can literally make me cry out of joy. Even his most melancholic music has an underlying element of peace.
One of my all time favorites!!! Thank for creating this!! 🇺🇸 Matiko the main character learned to play the cello for this movie. Amazing and humbling.
Memories. We have sorrows. Always we will remember good memories
Just saw this last night--fantastic movie with a really moving score. Joe Hisaishi never disappoints :)

Oh god, I don't even know this movie but I've got tears flowing.
The music alone makes me wanna cry, and with this amazing footage..
This movie definatly deserved the oscar.
My favorite film of all time...the music is sublime and the movie...outstanding.
saw this for the first time today. don't know what is more moving, the story line or the soundtrack. both brought me to tears. had to go back to this scene once you see the rock scene at the end.....

The Rock got me, and the scene where the father's face comes into focus, I could conceal my feelings no longer. I miss my dad.
simplemente bello
i will never understand people who dislike this kind of music :(
Vjekoslav Vnucec absolutely...and some people don’t like cats. Amazing.
Most beautiful movie I've ever seen...wish I could find a man that would enjoy this, He's the one who'd take my heart.
It's rare that you see good cello dubbing. Thanks Japan!

So beautifull..very love with this film😍
Such a beautiful sequence, and a gorgeous song.
this movie get real deep in your emotions
this music is so lovely , the sound get you think all memories from childhood....

one of my favorite films - but who composed the cello solo, please? my mother adores it!
Joe hisaishi
I'm considering playing this piece for my senior solo. Do you know where I could get the score for it ?
The song is Memory by Joe Hisaishi
@stevenkonasr

No idea what movie this is, but that's a real nice song right there.

Hi, I agree. But do you know the exact name? I would like to research it here or thru internet, Japan. Willing to share. I think it's possible. Thank you...and good luck to you.
Who plays the piano? And where?
Obrigada, querida!
I love how the vibrato keeps going, even when his hand isn't moving. LMAO. XD
@ModestDanny what do you have against it?
