  • Wouldn't you love to have healthy plants in your chameleon cage? Let's talk about it! I did an interview with Elizabeth Vasquez and released it both on the podcast and as part of the Chameleon Hour on UA-cam. So, listen in there for the full story or just show up for Chameleons and Coffee this Saturday afternoon!

Umbrella plants can be trained to grow horizontally but like Bill said, they will grow more vertically than anything else.

FUN FACT: If you understand the care requirements for your plants and they are similar to your chameleon, they will grow vigorously. Plants that need a lot of water should go to the jungle floor. Plants that need less should be moved towards the top of the enclosure. Also keep in mind that its all about the light: water: aeration ratio.

Trees can be grown, but it will be hard to maintain in a standard chameleons cage. They grow too large. If you have a 6ft cage, DEFINITELY go for it. One thing to consider when it comes to trees, are that depending on the tree, you may have to learn aspects of bonsai to keep the tree fitting in the larger enclosure. To put it in perspective, a Cannabis plant grows so aggressively that it becomes tree-like in appearance but to maintain it you'd have to airprune the root system or cut the root system back entirely just so it wont outgrow an 80" high enclosure. The benefit of this particular plant is that you can just cut the foliage back. With a tree, instead of cutting it back, you'd want to train the branches and control its root system which is a whole other art.

Hibiscus needs grow lights to grow. Light bars and T5/ T8s aren't inherently strong enough to grow a hibiscus for more than 6 months to a year.

Bought a staghorn fern for my enclosure, which i plan to mount in sphagnum moss... Any opposition to the moss in particular?

I do not know of any probable issues. But, I do not know whether the moss you are using would be poisonous for chameleons.

Can you put your chameleon cage by a window as long as there is plenty of plant coverage for the chameleon?

Windows are tricky. They provide good light, but you just have to watch the heat build up.

@@ChameleonAcademy Though you are the professional, I would like to speak to the details. The reason why a window is tricky is usually depth of the enclosure. Most people have a "standard" enclosure so when heat builds, it usually will radiate through the enclosure. This will potentially make it way too hot. If you create enough depth to where the enclosure moves away from the window then you could pull it off. Its more of a trial and error type of game. There's other factors to consider, but yeah... you could. Prioritize your chameleons health and then the growth of the plants. Plants in your chameleons cage will be very resistant and will be easier to save than a chameleon in distress.
