Watching you and your videos is like some kind of Zen. Im a 64 yr old gramma. I barely leave my house in town due to sudden health issues. My years were eaten up taking care of 5 kids without a partner. Many hard decades as an RN taking care of others. But I had started a notebook when I was 17 and I had dreams. I designed a log cabin and gardens and buildings for my livestock. I had lists of equipment and tools. I cut out pictures of country interiors that I liked and put them in my notebook to gaze upon and hope. I read the Last Whole Earth catalog cover to cover and the Foxfire series and many many other "live off the Land" books. That was my dream. Alas life happened and those dreams stayed dreams. I work on not feeling sad about it. Maybe next life if there is one. But I watch your videos and live just a little vicariously through them. And they bring me peace. Thank You.

I was raised in the Mojave Desert in California without water and a bathroom. Thankful we did have power but 50 years later could live without power. But remember doing laundry with a wringer washer, baths in a wheel barrow and keeper of the out house. Great memories. I so enjoy your videos and my husband and I binge watch them. I live in Las Vegas for the last 40 years so I envy your peace. I remember that the most, peace and quiet. I just discovered my Great Great Grandmother was born in Ontario Canada! So now I have a new adventure.

I am down in the USA, northeastern Illinois and not at all likely to be building anything as I have none of those skills, nor hunting or fishing but I do enjoy watching your videos, on both channels. Too bad I got interested late in life (76) because from a health stand point really too old to be doing much of anything EXCEPT, hopefully, some more car (Jeep) camping. I did a little in 2016 and hope to do some more this summer. However, I have learned a number of things indirectly from you such as using a draw knife to remove bark from timber and the reason why, how logs fit together to build your cabin, and your cooking on your cabin stove. I AM curious as to how you managed to train your dog Calli. She seems pretty well trained, although I have not seen any video where she was doing any retrieving of bird game, especially in water. Found out my older brother has been watching your videos as well and I might have found a camp mate in him. He and his wife have been boating for the last 40 years, last 10 on a 40’ trawler, but that has reached a zenith so maybe camping with me is an alternative. I WOULD like to see a little more detail on how you do things, and less time spent on a repetitive thing such as chipping wood out of a joint or draw knifing a piece of wood for something not explained. Also on your hunting expeditions, under what circumstances do you use a bow, a rifle. Do you use traps of any kind? Do you tan any hides of big animals such as deer? What sort of trail food do you take along on your scout trips? All for now. Geo.

Wow Shawn! Seeing you outside the cabin in a truck is like seeing someone time traveling from the 1700’s. Just weird seeing you outside your element in a truck. Your videos, perspective, music and content are unmatched. I enjoy every one! Be safe.
This was a nice change Shawn. Frankly, I've seen enough logs get notched. I also like it when the cast iron pots & pans come out and something that once roamed around the forest gets baked, stewed, fried or jerked. But most of all, Cali steals the show...again. Stay warm!
Only once I went hunting where it was so cold, the trees were exploding. Sitting next to an abandoned cemetery made it more interesting.

Respect to Your project and Your work. For 10 year I lived in a forrest here in Denmark. Shortly I was sendt to Kosovo as soldier. After Kosovo, I get an civil job, and had to move into town. Gess what, I get sick, and now Im return to the forrest to live. Im lucky to have a understanding girlfriend, she is from Norway. I started watching your film clips when you laid the sill logs and have not missed a single episode. Am always disappointed when your Friday film is over wich means I have to wait a whole week until your next clip. Been my dream my whole life to build a cabin. well here I am, 70 years old so I guess I can hang that dream out to dry. BUT I do have your films and I just enjoy them so much!! So, so much. @Sharon61 Sharon I think you are so right. I have always wondered about these negative people. They like that control the button gives them as you say. I think they want to control us and make our lives as miserable as theirs. And yes, I think they are very jealous of other's hard work. Some I think don't even care for the subject they are viewing but do it for the mere spite and control. It must float their boat. I agree with you that they should grow up and live life. I love being outdoors with my dog Molly. She's a Chow Shepard mix that my wife and I rescued from the pound 2 years ago, great dog . But I don't know if I would have the type of commitment that so many of you guys mainly Joe and Doug have to the whole filming, set up, editing, and everything else that comes with it. My hat goes off to you all and I enjoy all your channels and both of your channels Shawn. So, please keep up the great work not only on your homestead but on the quality of videos you produce

It's been a while since my lab mix passed. The more I watch Cali the more I'm thinking of adopting another dog.
Labs are the best. We have had numerous dogs over the yrs, all kinds, except little dogs. I don't like little dogs. Seem they are best at barking. Anyway, I'm too old now to be a good companion for a large dog, so since Fred died some yrs back, I have filled my house with cats. A whole new dynamic.

We lost Bella three years ago, our Golden Retriever, and miss her. She had a good life and lived to be 12. Cali obviously loves your company and you both are good companions. Keep sending these videos my way, love em!
I'm a younger man, and so inherently naive, but I think the best way for someone in my situation is to ask questions regardless how dumb we feel. That said, does this popping of the logs in your cabin affect the structural integrity? My wife and I enjoy your videos quite a bit and realized we're a quite inexperienced in this type of lifestyle and thus the reality you have to face sometimes. Thank you for your great content!

Yes, yes, yes, Shawn. I like the videos that show more of your life and what it takes to live the life you do. I love to watch ALL phases of it. Calli is a joy too. I love how lively she is. I watch some of the other dogs in the snow camping videos and when they act sluggish, etc., I worry about their well being. But Calli is all "into it". You are both fun to watch. Thank you so much.

My husband and I are loving these videos. We miss the woods.
It seems the self reliant off grid life style requires a full time devotion as a survivalist on a daily basis. Psychologically you have the advantage over most people during the pandemic because staying home is both preferred and necessary. A once a week outing for provisions etc. is a great time-out for you and Cali and a chance to go exploring. It's healthy and fun to change the playground. Keep warm....as they say on the Prairies...."cold is cold".

Have loved every video I have seen, Shawn. Cannot help but admire your dogged working around and in the cabin. I'm interested in how you plan things - personally I have to list everything, start at the top and work down. You seem to have it all in your head! Canada is so similar but so very different to Australia. I'm an 80 year old woman, city bound and living alone. Your videos bring all the dreams of my younger self to life, though I really wanted to build a mud brick cabin. You are so very lucky to have a true partner to share your dreams with, Shawn. I love the way you love and interact with Callie, unlike "Joe and Zack's Survival" in which Joe puts his dogs out of the tent in the am, doesn't interact with them all day and then, brings them in at night. I am surprised Joe's dogs stay so loyal to him. That attests to the loyalty of a dog for it's owner!
I went to boarding school in the Swiss Alps. Wasn't allowed to leave school property but grew up with many dogs and needed MY walks. Some Farmers allowed me to help plowing or building although was a young girl (11). They told me that the cabins would make loud cracking noises for 50 to 60 years after they built it. ❣ 😃

Wow. We had wind chill factor -50 in boston one year, and close to that a few others, and i HAD to go out in it. So, nope for me. Big bowl of nope with a side of nope...

(-50°F − 32) × 5/9 = -45.56°C
(32°F − 32) × 5/9 = 0°C =freezing point for water at sea level
(212°F − 32) × 5/9 = 100°C = boiling point for water at sea level
Honestly..it is all in the preparation for the outing. You need the gear and there is great gear available. And you need to be smart...it takes huge amounts of energy to hike/snowshoe through some of the snow but sweating is the enemy...address it with proper wicking clothes and wool or use other techniques such as slowing down at times. And if needed...a pack with dry clothes that you can change into...even super quickly. You have to keep the core of the body warm.
So happy to see you doing a circular grind on your axe, not because there's anything special about the circular grind, but because so many think a stroke in one direction over and over and over is the way to go, not understanding that grinding metal off doesn't know anything about direction. There might be a slight point you could make about a raised burr, but that would be most evident for the folk that only stroke one way. And anyway, a burr disappears practically instantly when you flip the tool over. Many channels annoy me when watching sharpening, but your channel does not. Thank you.
I enjoy all of your video presentations Shawn. You do a wonderful job of allowing your audience to view so many private and personal aspects of your day to day living in your amazing cabin home. Hi Shawn, yesterday coincidently I find your probably first video. Minute by minute it has drawn me into your world. .
