    Hi Shawn, it may be different in Canada, but here in Tennessee we plant our sweet potatoes on the poorest ground we have and don't fertilize. They still make enough vine to completely cover the ground and produce an abundant crop. The old timers say grown this way they have a better flavor and more sugar content

    • @suewelk2237
      @suewelk2237 2 роки тому +7

      The biggest difference are the cold night temperatures here in Canada. Unlike in Tennessee, it goes down to 44F at night, and all growing stops entirely. With 5 to 6 months of winter (!), growing season is also super short as you can certainly imagine. In our case, a greenhouse makes a huge difference ;-)

    Hi Shawn. we have very similar climatic conditions here in the southeastern part of germany. the time span from winter to spring and summertime is basically the same. we grow almost all vegetables in the greenhouse, as they allow us to sow very early and also have a much longer harvest time, well into autumn. especially when it comes to tomatoes and cucumbers. Potatoes are open ground with us, because they are very nice to grow as early and late potato varieties. late potatoes can also be harvested well into autumn and late potatoes can then be stored over the winter without any problems. I really like your videos and wish you and your family all the best. Greetings from Germany

    It seems even with enhanced soil and sun conditions that without systematic irrigation growing three million calories will be impossible. Perhaps using the natural land slope and a solar-driven well pump on a timer to push water down channels or through buried permeable hose could keep the garden area moist. I feel with the right watering system you can get the farming process dialed in for three million calories and perhaps even a surplus. Good luck, Shawn!!

    For tge second year out of the forest the garden looks good - but obviously still a work in progress for a while yet! A couple of barrels to create a compost "tea" is a good way to deal with weedy plants. The tea is good to water the garden and the seeds usually can't germinate and will break down adding to the tea. Then in the fall you add whatever is left in the bottom of the barrel to the compost pile ready for next year.

    Hi, it is nice watching your videos. As I was watching this video. Regarding the green house, and specifically your sweet potatoes , the vines have to be put into the dirt about every 12 inches and cover it with dirt, so they root and the sweet potatoes will form those roots. They grow underground . If you let the vine hang from the ceiling like a bean plant, you will not have sweet potatoes. Hope this will clarify how sweet potatoes grow. Good luck.

Then get lil travel spray bottles from Walmart n fill those up to always have the spray on hand. Everything's looking great 👍 and I just received a short n long sleeve t-shirts from your merch. @@allysonhanks9159 I'm doing fine. But, I just realized, as I"m sure Shawn did, if he read my comment, that this is the Shawn James channel, not the "Self Reliance" channel. I've got them confused, and that is why I'm seeing a lot more gardening, and less construction. My mistake. The next video I watched, he actually is working quite hard on his new cabin.

      @@allysonhanks9159 No, not at all. And, contrary to the impression I may have left, I actually do like gardening and my wife is really into it. I'm currently in the process of converting a lot of my VCR taped garden programs over to MP4 mainly for my wife to watch. Remember with HGTV had a lot of useful gardening and crafting programs, not these trash "property makeover" programs? But, I just miss Shawn's old cabin and his winter videos.

    Shawn, I always used a disposable vibrating toothbrush. Just hold the back (non brush side) on the flower stem and the pollen flies - particularly for the tomatoes since they are self pollinators.

    if the difference is that much may need to look into some grow tunnels and take the covers off in the fall...reinstall them every spring..they should store in locations to put the back and if you are going to huegel culture...raised beds convert to smaller grow tunnels with cattle fencing

    Hi Shawn, when we were young and be planting potato's we mixed a good amount of natural sawdust with the soil, that did help the soil as it broke down plus helped the potato's grow and the came out of the ground virtually dirt free so did not have to wash them. Just a idea for you.

    I am wondering, with the cabin not ready to move in and the work in the greenhouse and the garden, how do you manage your every day life, like sleeping, cooking, cleaning the clothes, also regarding your wish to life as self reliant as possible, also all the driving from your wife_s home to your daughter, to the forest garden and the cabin and greenhouse area.
    Do you plan to finish the cabin or have your plans change?

    Can your solar array handle a submersible pump that you could put into the IBC tote? If so, attach a garden hose with spray nozzle to it and water your garden that way. I've seen YT videos of people using them for their rainwater barrels. It'll save you a ton of time.
    Also, I've found that squash and watermelon require more heat. Maybe if you try them in the greenhouse they'll do better.
