Oh my gosh, the nostalgia. This movie used to come on all the time when I was a kid. I loved it. Then it stopped playing and I could never remember the name of the movie, just the scene where they are singing "Believe" (of course all I could remember was that it was my favorite song, but no lyrics or music). Now they get to the "One by one" part and all of the words come inexplicably flooding back to me. I literally have not heard this song in over 10 years and I know all the words.
I love how Wimzik just stumbled backward onto the throne. It's like she completely forgot about it when she saw that Lion had got hurt shielding her from the Wicked Witch's blast. And boy, does Wimzik become op after that. She even scared Gloom off with her powers, which I was really happy about as a kid since he scared me the most when I first watched this movie.
I love this movie.❤ I only saw it once as a kid but I never forget it. The sings have been running through my head ever since 🎶 Thank you for posting this
Ayanna Watts I also saw it only one time as a kid. I didn't get to see the whole thing, but I always remembered the part where Wimzik transforms into The Flower of Oz and fights back against the Wicked Witch of the East and Gloom.
Guys this movie has a 100,000 views so please go rate it on imdb . Cause on IMDB only 348 people have rated it. Please you guys for our nostalgia's sake. Otherwise this animated movie will be lost in the pages of history.
Exactly, and you'd think something written after the original would be able to be consistent with it. If the Wizard and the Lion had been friends, you'd think the first words out of the Lion's mouth after the screen fell away would be, "Oscar, it's you!" We do read from the Lion's point of view when he goes to get his courage; if they knew each other, there would be a moment of reunion, but they are as polite and formal as new acquaintances tend to be.
They should do a 3rd Lion of Oz! where everyone got what they wanted at The Emerald City and Lion returned to visit Winzic with his friend Oscar with facing some tough challenges on the way to visit them :D
My little brother had this movie and I would always put it on because I actually liked watching it, even though I was almost an adult. The story and the voice acting and the whole magical reveal of who Whimzik really is. I can still remember the song that heals the silver bridge.
The only problem with this whole story-- and it's a pretty big one-- is that if the Wizard and the Lion knew each other before coming to Oz, why didn't they recognize each other later on?
@KoraggRules No. Technically, in the original Oz books, the slippers were a more silvery white color. MGM Studios made them ruby red in the 1939 movie to show off the new technicolor.
I have 2 questions for this movie: First, How come the Witch of the East doesn't have the ruby slippers? And second, In the end of "The Wizard of Oz" how come Lion doesn't reconize his friend as the wizard?
@PetiteOzma As a matter of fact, "Dorothy of Oz" is in the works as an animated feature, which (hopefully) will be released to theaters. Do you realize there's been no Oz on the big screen since "Return to Oz" in 1985? That's the sad part, of course; 14 books full of characters whose names used to be household words in every home in America, and because of one 1939 musical, that's all been forgotten. I love the MGM movie, but I hate what it's caused.
6:22- I guess thats when the Wicked Witch of the East is dead. Then the real adventure with Dorthy, The Scarecrow, the Tin man and the Lion has really begun. Silly should've come with the Lion too!!!
@PetiteOzma I'm thinking that the thought of using the ruby slippers never entered their heads, seeing as they wanted this to be more consistent with Baum. Using the ruby slippers was the only mistake Fred Murch made in creating the film "Return to Oz."
@PetiteOzma It's not that they're unfaithful (and let's face it, Baum retold a lot of his own stories within the Oz books; the Tin Woodman's origin comes to mind), it's just that Roger seems to be writing stories which he wants to fit in between the tales already told. Thus, he has Dorothy returning to Kansas at the end of "Dorothy of Oz" (the events of which reveal that Roger has certainly read the first book), placing it before the time she actually moved to Oz.
@PetiteOzma I think most original Oz productions feel the shadow of MGM upon them, and they'll go one of two ways: give into it or go their own way. Kudos to them what does the latter!
@lolwutinator999 I'm sure lion found him. the wwote(wicked witch of the east) said he landed in the emerald city. And everyone knows that the "wizard" was a guy with a hot air balloon. My guess is Oscar.
@Medusa0999 All the singing voices (except for Wimzik's) were performed by other people. It's possible the actors were unavailable for the song recordings, and I don't think Kathy or Bobcat sing.
Oh for sure... in the earliest drafts of my own novel, I had a green Witch, not because I didn't know better but because I felt pressured to have a green, broomstick riding Witch (she only has a small role)... oh and as for Wicked, yes you're right I'm sorry the Winkies were green (at least for the most part I remember the one who talked to Dorothy being blue, I'll rewatch it soon) but in Wicked she was a Munchkin not a Winkie (or Vinkus as Maguire calls it).
@PetiteOzma I've never heard of any "Ozma is Dorothy" angle being posited for that movie. Dorothy simply made a wish and the shoes did the best they could as far as answering it, namely by giving Dorothy a means of going to Oz any time she wanted. Tip was not essential to the version of Oz they created; in this continuity, Ozma lived some of her life either trapped behind mirrors or stuck in the asylum controlled by the Nome King's human agent Dr. Worley.
@MaskedMan66 the point is even if they did consider it it wouldn't have been a realistic budgetary concern of this show since the Ruby Slippers are a fiercly protected Trademark of Wanter Bros. I am always happy to see silver shoes, especially in cases I know they could get away with using Ruby (like on some of the dorothy models for The recent Price is Right Wizard of Oz episode) but they couldn't get away with it here and it would have eaten up a huge portion of the budget if they could.
@PetiteOzma As far as the rest goes, I thought that movie was thoroughly Oz; scary yes, but that's part of the fun. And everything came right in the end. And Fairuza Balk was a brilliant Dorothy; she had a way of relating to the non-human characters as if they were human that was really impressive.
@MaskedMan66 Oh agreed she was/is a phenomonal actress. And it was very Ozzy but there were some bits I personally would have changed... there was a halfway aborted "Ozma is Dorothy" angle... "I wish I could be in two places at once" she says before Ozma appears... and for me Tip/Ozma dynamic is crucial. Nothing major, just a few other things I'd change if it was me, still one of the best Oz films out there.
that was a beautiful cartoon, Kathy Griffin was hilarious as always! nothing is better than hand drawn animation, its so much better than that computer animation crap!
Of course I made that comment before "Oz The Great and Powerful" was released, but that's another one that's more MGM than Baum-- even though the Wizard's full name is used and Glinda is the Witch of the South. But the MGM influence is still felt, what with the green, two-eyed Witch of the West and the phrase "Great and Powerful," rather than "Great and Terrible."
@MaskedMan66 Apparantly it was something that the director was delibertly trying to do but was dropped (though I've heard the novelization keeps threads of it). It was something I noticed in the scene on my own... which I've discussed with another Oz scholar and he told me about how this came up in conversations with the director (he recently went to a screening where Murch and Balk were present) sadly I don't have any citable sources...
@MaskedMan66 Also... I'd say there were a few other choices I didn't like in Return to Oz but I wouldn't blame Murch for the Slippers... as far as I understand the earlier drafts of the script included the magic belt that the nome king actually had from Ozma of Oz (or a magic belt made from the material from the slippers)... but the choice to actually use Ruby Slippers was almost assuredly done for marketing purposes as that's what the general public thinks of...
@MaskedMan66 Oh I shall try to track a copy down at some point then... someone told me that he ignored LFB's books entirely... and when I first saw the book title "Badge of Courage" I thought it'd be too MGM inspired, since the courage came in liquid rather then in medal form in Baum. Ozma is a huge part of why I'm drawn to Oz, so any Oz universe where she doesn't exist tends to loose my interest. Thanks for correcting me on that.
@MaskedMan66 Yes I am aware of the upcomming movie but someone had told me that Roger Baum's books were very unfaithful and had no Ozma, so I wasn't excited for it at all.. if it has Ozma in it then my interest is increased, again I was sort of misinformed about this film as well... I was told it was all about the Lion's pendant of courage that he got from the Wizard... and from the way it was described they made it sound like it was the pendant he got at the end of the MGM movie.
@MaskedMan66 Of course she does... you know how much in royalties Disney had to pay to use Ruby Slippers? Even the english version of the game Rizowad had to pay royalties to WB and carry the WB trademark because Dorothy wore redshoes.
@MaskedMan66 Baum was prone to changing things outright, ... but as I said I never read Roger's books I was misinformed and what I was told kept me away... I'm a bit of a stickler to the first 6 books, again I was told... apparantly wrongly, that he ignored everything but the first book. I will check out his books when I get a chance.
Ohhhh my golden memory of my childhood..... 😭. I want again those years ❤️
This is still one of my favorite movies from my childhood.
Mine too
And I always get a little bit emotional when ever I hear this song.
i actually cried in this seen it was so heart warming and their voices really are good
I love how Wimzik just stumbled backward onto the throne. It's like she completely forgot about it when she saw that Lion had got hurt shielding her from the Wicked Witch's blast. And boy, does Wimzik become op after that. She even scared Gloom off with her powers, which I was really happy about as a kid since he scared me the most when I first watched this movie.
The instrumental version of the courage of a lion is beautiful.

I love this movie and the ending was great it always makes me smile, thanks for uploading it!
You will believe is the perfect pick-up/heartwarming song ever.
Lion really loves Wimzik
Exactly, and you'd think something written after the original would be able to be consistent with it.

Awesome Movie, many thanks for putting this up.
I used to rent this all the time at my local library. :)
good memories with sony CD player
Please let Saberspark review this!!
This movie...*sniffle*......SO HEART WARMING!!!!!
They should do a 3rd Lion of Oz! where everyone got what they wanted at The Emerald City and Lion returned to visit Winzic with his friend Oscar with facing some tough challenges on the way to visit them :D
I know it’s been eight years ago or your comment but I just gotta say Now that sounds like a good idea😉
The origin of the cowardly lion.
This is one of the best movie of my childhood days. :)
My little brother had this movie and I would always put it on because I actually liked watching it, even though I was almost an adult. The story and the voice acting and the whole magical reveal of who Whimzik really is. I can still remember the song that heals the silver bridge.
This brings me back so much memories :D. I love the song at the end :)
The only problem with this whole story-- and it's a pretty big one-- is that if the Wizard and the Lion knew each other before coming to Oz, why didn't they recognize each other later on?
I have watched this cartoon when I was a child and I still love it , but do you now if this story continue ???
Well that’s were the wizard of oz begins... :D
Yeah but it doesn’t follow the 1939 version but the book and other things about just doesn’t make sense.
2:41 DON'T BE SO SURE YOU OLD HAG! BECAUSE I SEE A HOUSE THAT IS GOING TO FALL ON YOU SOON.
i guess this is what happened before dorothy got to the emerald city with her friends..lol
Omg oscar is the wizard of oz lion thought he was a different person but he had seen him before
Her transformation was real fast, but it was enough for me.
thank u 4 uploading this movie! :D ah, memories...
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Even in the original Oz books the kind of continuity you're looking for, wasn't highly stressed.
@KoraggRules No. Technically, in the original Oz books, the slippers were a more silvery white color. MGM Studios made them ruby red in the 1939 movie to show off the new technicolor.
Dorothy's too old, but at least she has the right shoes on.
I have 2 questions for this movie: First, How come the Witch of the East doesn't have the ruby slippers? And second, In the end of "The Wizard of Oz" how come Lion doesn't reconize his friend as the wizard?

Same here, absolutely amazing!
6:22- I guess thats when the Wicked Witch of the East is dead. Then the real adventure with Dorthy, The Scarecrow, the Tin man and the Lion has really begun.
Silly should've come with the Lion too!!!
Thank you so much for your upload! My childhood movie! I still rmb the line ' I don't know and I don't care'
The feminism just shines through Dorothy's voice
I tink the animation is fantastic and the acting is great, we have Tim Curry, Dom Deluise and Jane Horrocks but that is my opinion.
You forgot Kathy Griffin
@PetiteOzma I'm thinking that the thought of using the ruby slippers never entered their heads, seeing as they wanted this to be more consistent with Baum.
Using the ruby slippers was the only mistake Fred Murch made in creating the film "Return to Oz."

Wimzik is very brave
I just say this happened in an alternate reality.
Or they both fell foul of an amnesia spell....
Or something.
I do like this movie.
another thing... her dress should be blue. She doesn't get a green dress till she gets to the Emerald City... and that dress was actually white.
Um mrs witch of the east you'll never get that far to conquer oz cause a house is gonna fall on you from the Kansas sky's
@PetiteOzma Hmm, been a while since I read the novelization, but again, I don't recall anything like that.
Wish I could have been at that screening!
Did any one else Captain's voice changed when he sang? That is weird because The man who plays him sings wonderfully without any help.

Nice movie
First lion saves Wimzik From the witch and now shes saving him from the witch

I love the song at 3:42 - 4:34 hahaha I use it to remind myself that there are people who believe. :)
You are awesome! Thanks for adding this! :]
So shes Shesus?
Lolwutinator999 this movie is a prequel to the wizard if oz, so you need to watch that to find out what happens next.
If the Flower of Oz is so powerful, what do they need Ozma for?
I love the piano music at 7:27
Of course I made that comment before "Oz The Great and Powerful" was released, but that's another one that's more MGM than Baum-- even though the Wizard's full name is used and Glinda is the Witch of the South.
But the MGM influence is still felt, what with the green, two-eyed Witch of the West and the phrase "Great and Powerful," rather than "Great and Terrible."
@kisah19 shes not a witch shes the the flower of oz ...

2:23 I love this part!!!!!!!
7:00 - 7:11 same dialogue written in the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel.

Ozma is a huge part of why I'm drawn to Oz, so any Oz universe where she doesn't exist tends to loose my interest. Thanks for correcting me on that.
what happening in the end?
@mrsanimal0lover Very talented dude! I met him at Anime Central several years ago and he's a hilarious guy.
So I assume this girl is Ozma in Roger Baum's canon?
a third? you mean there's a second one?! whats it called?! i wanna see! :D
My favorite character is The Tin Man.
@zombiestugaplayer Oscar is the wizard.
Why was Tim Curry's singing voice dubbed? he's a singer....
@KoraggRules in the books, they are silver. I suspect the movie is going for a more canon take
donde encuentro esta pelicula en español
@PetiteOzma Like I indicated before, it's a shame that the only Oz most people know is a hugely expurgated version created by MGM.
@MaskedMan66 Of course she does... you know how much in royalties Disney had to pay to use Ruby Slippers? Even the english version of the game Rizowad had to pay royalties to WB and carry the WB trademark because Dorothy wore redshoes.
@Michaelmyersrulz true and that movie was also a musical
One by one hand in hand join together take a stand omg 😢
isn't dorothy's shoes sappose to be red?..if you can see there white
so what happens next?! it never tells the end of the story, does the lion ever go home? Does he ever find oscar?? These movies are bad for endings...
@SogekingFirebirdStar well with The Wiz they used Silver Slippers and that was with Diana Ross
This is the first one then the second one is called Wizard of Oz and the third one i think is called Return to Oz
There should have been more of Dorothy, Scarecrow, and Tin Man in this movie.
No, this is more of the Cowardly Lion's origin story, so naturally, Lion meeting up with them at the end is enough.
@@1987AnimeBoy Exactly.
Yeah but I wanted to see him reunited with his friend.
Just how heavy is a tree branch?
I was thinking the same thing.
My favorite character is Kion
You mean Lion right? Or Kion from The Lion Guard and said that as a joke? :)
My favorite character is The Tin Man.
@Straw2daberry As far as I am away Roger Baum's books ignore all the other books aside from Wizard... so there is no Ozma.
Have you ever read "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?"
it's called The Wizard of OZ
@2Exotic2Fly2High i believe your thinking of the wizzard of oz.
