    I bought 2 of these so I can air my 4 tires back to 37 from 15 when back on a road. Like you said the compressor gets hot after 2 tires with a 30 minute cooling time needed. This is a great price and function from a Harbor Freight product. Thanks for the review.

    Just bought this myself, woke up this morning and my rim was touching the ground. Went to harbor freight, picked this up & my 35" tire was inflated within 2-3 minutes I want to say. I saw a $29.99 one too made by the same people but I figure you get what you pay for, so I just forked out $30 for it.

      Update 2 months later, still running strong haven't ran into any issues. I really recommend getting this compressor.

    The reason for turning it on before connecting the hose is to minimize the current surge when a motor is first turned on. Adding the load of air resistance on top of the motor start up surge could be enough to pop the circuit breaker or even fry a winding.

      Wrong. You turn it on first to release and water inside the tube.

    First of all back in the day you didn't have to inflate your tires, someone else did it. And back then you didn't have to pay for airing up your tires at a ridiculous price. Some people like the physically impaired can't inflate tires. I do have one of these but my only complaint is the gauge increments could of been more specific on PSI. I have to disconnect it from the tire and put an air gauge to get the correct reading. I'll get off my soap box now. Thanks for the review very easy to understand.

    I'm on my second HF/Pittsburgh compressor. The first eventually began blowing fuses every time I turned on the switch. It lasted about a year or so. The second unit has fared better so far. A little more than two years into its service life, I've had no real problems with it. As you noted, it gets ridiculously hot, but that's with all compressors. By the time my trail day is done, I'm impatient and don't like to sit around waiting for the tires to air up. I've not timed it, but I'd bet it takes four minutes or more to air up one of my 33s from 15 to 28 psi. For now, it gets the job done, but I'll move on to a dedicated on-board air setup in the next year or two.

    I bought this pump the day after Christmas with a gift card from work. First time I used it the yellow hose blew out where it connects to the pump. They need to improve the durability of the hose. It's incapable of withstanding the heated air. Pump worked great though.

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  7 років тому +2

      I think Barry MacArthur is talking about the more expensive installed systems, like he mentions the ARB which doesn't have a comparable compressor to this one from Harbor Freight, or the one from Viair that you mentioned. Have you purchased the HF one? Did you have issues with it? That's great that you like yours. You should create a video so we can all see it in action.

    • @nickv4073
      @nickv4073 7 років тому

      Yeah, I had the HF one. It lasted a year and died. I then bought the Viair 88P and the difference is night and day. Its all metal and heavy with outstanding build quality. It does not connect to the cig lighter. Instead, you attach the clips to the car battery terminals. This allows more power with no risk of blowing a car fuse. It also has an in line fuse. As for video on this, others have already done it. Search "Viair 88P".

      I have the smaller 100psi compressor from harbor freight and use it regularly to air up after off-roading. It’s lasted over two years. In the manual it says to oil after so many hours of use. I keep a small bottle of air tool oil in the bag with it and add a few drops before every use.

    I'd love to know how much leakage that unit has. It might be interesting to add some cooling vanes and a CPU fan to keep the thing cooler. How many amps does it draw?

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  4 роки тому

      For Amp draw, it says 30 Amps online. That's a lot. Guessing it is peak load on a bad day. Whatever it is its enough that they recommend running your vehicle. I don't have the ability to measure the current draw in the field. The unit has some small cooling vanes already. Most of the heat is carried away in the compressed air. That is really what is getting things hot, the compression. I have used this in a light rain, not sure I would want to do that with a cpu fan on it, But it couldn't hurt from a cooling perspective.

    What’s the reason you didn’t connect the negative to battery terminal? I’m curious to know why.

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  3 місяці тому

      I think the reason is that when you connect the negative, you can normally get a spark. I think the though is that one it is bad for the terminal, but also Batteries used to not be sealed and they could outgas and it was flammable. It probably doesn't really matter but better safe.

    I guess my experience has been different. I bought one for my cars and garage. I decided to air up my 150 pound portable air tank. It was down to about 20 pounds. Hooked it up and turned it on. It ran fine for about 3 minutes. Just shut off. I checked and it was hardly warm, but I let it sit until the next day. I checked the tank and it had about 78-80 pounds of air in it. So the compressor had put in about 60 pounds. I hooked it back up to the battery, and it would not turn on. After checking everything I pulled the fuse and it had literally dissolved. No resemblance to a fuse at all. The socket for the fuse had also severely melted. So, I am out $70 as it is just past the warranty. I won't buy another one.

      MUDTRAIL, yes, from about 15PSI up to 37. It gets hot but that is the physics of compression. If I'm not in a rush, or it is really hot out, I will fill two up wait a bit so it can cool off some and then fill the other two.

      I would guess that the ground you are connected to may have paint on it and it is acting as an insulator instead of a good conductor. Look for some bare metal if possible. It could be seized up I guess, if you let it get too hot. But I would think it would have been fairly obvious the last time you used it that you smoked it.

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  6 років тому

      It puts out high pressure but not that much quantity. There just isn't a ton of flow to it. Maybe for a small project on the desktop it would be ok, but it is not the right thing for anything bigger. there is definitely less air than comes out of one of those spray cans of air. It does work on tires though, and mine is still going.

    You should probably read the manual before you do a review.

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  5 років тому +4

      It get's hot because it compresses air. It's Physics. You are right this pump does not have a 100% duty cycle. The big question is how that heat is dissipated. In a 100% duty cycle compressor, it could dissipate heat faster than it makes it. This pump cannot do that and you can smell it when it gets hot. I use it until it gets hot and then I let it cool as much as I can stand waiting. If it is hot outside, it takes longer to fill my tires. But this compressor is still working for me after a few years of intermittent use.

      It wasn't designed to be a work horse but it does work (will last longer if you read the manual) edit: I just read the manual and nothing about how long to run it, but it does say let it cool down before you put it back in the case. Lol
      OR you could have some fun and fill one tire after another and see how many tires before it fails. YOU WILL BE A UA-cam ROCKSTAR lol
