Hey there! Today I want to share my experience with the AooStar GEM12 mini PC, which Banggood kindly sent over for me to check out. Just to be upfront, this review is totally my own-Banggood didn't influence what I'm about to say. You can find a link in the video description if you're interested in grabbing one for yourself, plus there's a coupon code that's good until the end of July, so make sure to snag it while you can!
Initially, I unboxed the AooStar and dove right into testing. While setting up, I had a minor hiccup with Google flagging some activity, which prompted me to play it safe and reinstall Windows 11. Good thing I backed up my drivers beforehand-it saved me a headache when Windows didn't recognize a crucial Ethernet driver. With everything up and running smoothly again, I ran various benchmarks and tests, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results, especially with its capability to handle gaming and video editing tasks.
Speaking of gaming, the AooStar managed titles like Fallout 4 and Rocket League quite well on medium settings, though it struggled a bit with Cyberpunk 2077. For video editing, it breezed through rendering tasks once I upgraded to 32GB of RAM and added NVMe drives, courtesy of Kingston. The performance boost was noticeable, especially in rendering times.
Overall, the AooStar GEM12 has been a reliable companion for both work and play. Its compact size and robust performance make it a standout in the mini PC category. The networking features are solid, and while more USB ports would have been nice, a docking station solved that issue for me. Plus, it runs quietly, which is a big plus.
In conclusion, despite a few initial bumps, the AooStar GEM12 has won me over with its versatility and performance. Huge thanks to Banggood for providing the device and Kingston for the upgrades-they definitely enhanced the experience. If you're in the market for a mini PC that can handle a variety of tasks without breaking a sweat, this one's worth considering.

😄😄If I had any idea what I was talking about, this would be a better channel😀😀
and that attitude, my friends, is what keeps me coming back to this channel!!
He is speaking Nerdanese...and us nerds (PC and home server geeks) understand it perfectly...it is a bit of a learning curve...especially for us tinkerers and nerds...and THAT is why we keep coming back ;)
@@haydenc2742 yuppers. I find his videos consistently both educational and entertaining.
Same lol
8 cores mini PC for just over $400. Pretty cool!
Plot twice, the malware was in the driver export! lol. Actually, my mind was blown learning you can export the drivers on a machine!! TOO COOL
LOL I honestly had the same thought about the drivers being infected. And I only learned about exporting drivers this way recently :)
Yeah...give us a link on the script to do the backups for drivers!!! Most definitely!
@@haydenc2742
I created a folder called "drivers-backup" in the root of my C:\ drive.
Then ran this command as admin in a command prompt:
dism /online /export-driver /destination:C:\drivers-backup

I take it you tested using the balanced power profile?
the tdp can be set in the bios up to 75W
did you try the performance (55-65W) and 75W modes?
Do you have a guide on how you wiped the drive and did a fresh install of Windows? Does a reset just bring back any malware/spyware? I picked up a new mini-pc recently and need to sanitize it and then transfer either my Windows install + data from an old SSD to it, or just the data. It really depends on if I can get a clean activated install of Windows on the NVMe drive. If I can't then I'd like to use the install from from the SSD.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Thanks for watching!
It is always great to have options in the SFF market and this is a nice option to have. I haven't gotten my hands on any AMD Ryzen devices yet but it looks like they are holding their own in the market.
I'm really liking this device. Am still shocked at its ability to do what it does in such a small form-factor. Even edited this video on it. It struggled a bit with 5 layers of video in a few spots, but it just kept going until it was done :)
"If I had any idea what I was talking about, this would be a better channel"
I like this channel particularly because of this. I get tired of hyper-produced UA-cam content, it has it's place but IDK I don't like how UA-cam became like this Hollywood lite thing where you don't get anywhere without a professionally polished final product made with professional equipment.
Just give me a nerd playing with tech, I'm happy.
Yes never.. NEVER trust the factory install on these devices.
@@Trains-With-Shane had a few GMKtec branded & they have checked out fine tbh.
Eta Prime does a number of videos on oculink devices and mini-pc's - you might check them out. One does oculink on the cheap with an M.2 interface board, cables, and an external PCIe bracket for a video card (or whatever). I might give that a try with one of my HP EliteDesk 800 G4 mini's. You have it easier since the AOOSTAR has an oculink port already.
Saw a video for a gpu upgrade of the EliteDesk G4 using a pcie 16x slot. Search"HP Elite Desk Mini RX 560 4GB Upgrade" youtube. You need to upgrade to 150 PSU but neater than adapter and external GPU power. Of course make sure your unit has the pcie slot first. Oh, and hard to beat the Elite Desk G4 for the best bang emulation unit around as is.
I am not in love with off brand motherboards due to issues with updating BIOS. They often don't do many updates and when they do, the process isn't as straightforward as the name brands. I bought an off brand Windows 11 laptop from Walmart and tried to update the BIOS and it bricked the laptop. Of course this was after the warranty expired. So lesson learned for me. Love the video though!
Tutorial request? Throw Proxmox on it with iGPU pass through to an LXC
If I wasn't actually using the device as my daily desktop device, I would consider looking into that.
@@DBTechYT Any AMD mini-pc would be basically the same. IDK if you have any others though.
@@DBTechYT Turn it into your desktop with iGPU passthrough. I am doing that for my desktop allows snapshots before updates etc. Some other advantages as well running multiple desktops for different testing you may want to do just gives you so many more options to run it this way.
The home server geek in me just perked up :D
Yes please!!!!!
I hope that you changed all passwords for any services you logged in to before reinstalling Windows on that device
I did. Even though they all have 2FA on them, I changed my passwords
For that price, I'd find a mini pc with the 7840HS. Better in very way, and with a far better GPU.
Cool. I hope you find what you're looking for
You need to add the powerdraw at idle/under load at the wall. Then load ubuntu or other linux distro and list out the pci devices to show their ASPM setting and check what c states can be reached at idle with power top
I might do that in future videos, but that wasn't the point of this video
good review.......and no you shouldnt get a ltt screwdriver, they are sooooooo over priced.....i-fix-its stuff is way better and less $
Thanks for the info! I'll have to look more into the iFixit stuff
What about one of those small pencil type powered screwdrivers??
@@haydenc2742 I've been looking at those, too
Yikes, it is over priced and an underperformer. Did you notice or look for throttling?
Never experienced throttling
need more OMV7 vids not this
There's more OMV on the way. Sometimes, though, I make content about other things.
@@DBTechYT Good, since I'm not at all interested in OMV, only in Proxmox, Docker, mini PCs, servers, etc.
@@RaduRadonys speak for yourself :P
LOL
But with that said...only doing one type of content makes for a dull DB Tech...the spice o' life is new and exiting...(but unfortunately out of my price range :( )
