  • The modular synthesizer dominated the world of electronic music in the 1960s and 70s, yet fell out of favor as the digital revolution took hold. Today, modular synthesizers are receiving an overdue renaissance, thanks in large part to a strong community of dedicated builders, artists, and fans. Enjoy the live performance in conjunction with this talk, that aims to demonstrate how the past can influence the future of creativity in electronic music. Dr. Jerod Sommerfeldt teaches music theory, composition, and electronic music at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.
Bobby Rice is a student in the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Wow, this is awesome! Although Dr. Sommerfeldt, they misspelled your first name! I'm so glad that this is finally available online for those who missed it in person or want to see it again. Great work, Jerod and Bobby!!

If you can not afford an expensive unit, get a Korg Volca modular for under $ 200.00😊😊😊😊😊😊

    a familiar face
by looking at studio pictured under the headline „industry boom“ (minute 5:50) I see a familiar face. Two photographs of my old friend Conrad Schnitzler attached to the showcase to the right. He would have loved to work in that studio.

I like music that's hands-on., Thank you for this but If you don't mention Edgar Winter perhaps it's a Moog point that you've lost the plot.

I see what you did there - but it's pronounced Moog like "vogue", not like what a cow says + guh.

@@rdean150 Ha ha , Thank you, it's not every day I'm corrected but I will stand corrected excellent point. PS. Also, I have to admit that was a really bad attempt at a pun.

Don’t do it ppl! If you’re tempted by the exploration of sounds in new ways you’d never expect.... leave it alone and get VCV rack.. it’s a free online application that has all these modules.
Not hands on but you won’t and up with a room of cases filled with this stuff like what happens to all of us

Not all modular music is so unstructures. You'll find people performing electronic dance music using modular equipment.
