  • How can a song - written by a perfect stranger - feel as if it were written about you? Composer/artist/producer Claudio explains her art, purpose and technique, and finishes with an exclusive unveiling of her new track: "I was a Rockstar".
In her solo live performances, Claudio creates and orchestrates songs with complex layering in real-time using music technology. To her, the art is in making sure both the technology and technique are driven by the heart - and achieve a delicate balance between control and instinct.
Rachel Claudio is a Perth-born/European-based artist/composer/singer/producer and university lecturer. She works with major labels and composes scores for film and TV. Her live video performances have captured the hearts and minds of millions of viewers.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Personally I thought that quote was far off the mark the moment she said it. What she said immediately after was a good correction. "The songwriter has an ability to convert the emotional experience / the human experience into redeeming beauty, long after the pain has passed."

@@elliotr9095 that's true! I guess what moved me in the quote I mentioned is that music allows us to revisit a feeling that we wouldn't want to otherwise. But I agree, this second statement is indeed more accurate

I had a really sad heart because of a girl and I wrote a song about the whole situation. The moment I finished it, I no longer felt sad but rather felt a huge relief and joy. As she said, it was framed and I could relive it from a more positive perspective.

      I wanna live my life

      I cant live to long
      Faces make me cry

      I think about this life
      How long..Im the weak one
I wanna live my hole life

As a musician who has a very identical approach what hits me most is that she is able to produce such feeling in front of a pretty much dead audience.
I have always waited for a sort of dialogue. I lay out my feelings and someone will nod and reassure me. She doesn't wait for the audience to agree with her. She just shouts her feelings, knowing that if they are sincere they will reach those who are eager to listen.
    thank you.

YT is filled with musical artists that have been doing this sort of thing live for over a decade. Making music in one's humble home studio and then sharing it with the world is an honor, even when the world couldn't care less. Many great YT musicians don't get the honor and respect that they deserve. Almost all do it for free out of love for their craft. The competition for viewers is astoundingly immense, and great music will go unheard too. So, if you do come across some music that you think is good, give them a thumbs up rather than just moving on to another channel. It helps the musician and it shows respect for something that is given to you free of charge.

@Justice Briana Coming from an empathic place, "getting it" is a tough word 😅. People fall under aspects and get some things and not others... you know what I mean? Broken qualities of good and bad add flavor to the world of imperfections made "perfect" through our own living experiences through it 💞. I know what you mean wanting to find those that "get it", trust me! But they maybe closer than you think and you just don't have the right frame of reference to see them. A great example of this would be the cover album of Santana, a lion drawing at first glance but more if you actually look at it, or the old lady/young lady ink drawing. Our "senses", upbringing, and environment have a way of distorting what is and isn't. Seeing clearly is the great divider.

what an inspiration! A professional musician for 45 years, I lost the use of my hands due to severe arthritis. I'm now beginning to retrain myself using phone Apps. hearing the beautiful musicality that Rachel can bring forth from what most people would dismiss as button pushing is truly a wonderful inspiration for someone like me. as I became increasingly disabled, two things became apparent to me. One, I am a musician, still think, and hear, and listen like a musician. Two, my creativity started coming out and all sorts of strange and funny way of such as learning how to make toys for children out of bamboo, which I grow. You can't keep creativity down.

I do enjoy working with other people, but working in solitude (often in the wee hours), I seem to able to tap into something I can't when there's others around. She is definitely in control, both as a presenter and a musician. She should tell her nonna that the reason she can't play with other human musicians is she lacks the ability to control them to the level she needs to in order to create her music. Anyone that has ever been in the band knows that. Hats off to a creative lady. It's hard enough to create music but to pull it off live with a TED audience is a brave thing to attempt. she seems so nervous on first few min but she doesn't as soon as her song starts. tbh I'm more impressed by her focus and expression while song than anything

I had goosebumps and tears at the end. The thing that baffled me or made me sad about that song was the choice of the word ‘was’. Why ‘was’ she a rockstar when clearly she still ‘is’ a rockstar? Well done Claudio! I’ve watched this TED talk many times and I still get downloads every time

people like claudio and Grimes are to me the highest level of inspiration one can be - make you feel things youve never felt before through music/feelings you never though you could feel through music

so inspiring. I share those exact same sentiments and I've been judged for needing to be a solo artist to articulate myself. Claudio articulated her feelings so authentically and confidently.
