$30? ...DEAL! (Oddly Satisfying Lawn Care)

- First things first, why did I only charge $30 for this absolute mess of a property?
Join this channel to get access to perks:
/ @coppercreekcuts
1) To feed my hungry, hungry Bobcat mower (bit.ly/BCBrad) Also, for you guys. You think I would pass up a lawn like this? No way, I will get this tall grass, overgrown edging, unruly shrubs, and everything else on camera, even if it means doing it for peanuts.
2) This property is an abandoned pre-forclosure property in the neighborhood of the HOA (Home Owner's Association) for which I have an annual contract to maintain the common areas. Since the home owner is out of the picture, tacking on fines to the house wouldn't work, which means the HOA is paying for this out of the community account. They apparently had some budget constraints, so my choices were A) tell them I don't even do weekly lawn care maintenance for $30, let alone an overgrown hot mess like this and they can go kick rocks or B) chalk it up to a show of good will and a thank-you for the business they have given me so far. I chose B).
3) This is tangentially related to 1), but think about this. If you LOVED making videos, and in fact could produce TWO videos from ONE job (a real time and quick time version), and EACH of those videos had the potential to passively earn more in just a few months than you could make mowing a client's lawn for an entire year, AND if those videos would continue to generate revenue indefinitely, would you insist on getting an extra $20, $50, $100, or even $200 to do the job or else you would walk away? Put in that perspective, hopefully you can see why I had no issues taking barely enough money to cover expenses and overall a loss on this job (once labor/profits/savings are taken into account).
Q&A: Most common answers are addressed in the video, see the timestamps towards the end for the Q&A. Other common questions:
- Q: Why aren't you mowing this or that way? Why are you mowing the way you do?
- A: Because over the past 3 years I have learned what makes good UA-cam videos and frequent camera/angle changes are what get the views., and that means cutting the yard into tiny boxes or sections. Generally speaking, videos of mine (and other lawn care channels) where the camera only stays in one spot do poorly.
- Q: How could you work for that little? You are ruining the industry!
- A: See #3 above. A job like this is an investment in my eyes, and if my skills in story telling, videography, editing, and production are up to snuff, I can make many times over the investment I spent in under-paid time and energy to complete this yard.
- Q: How much would you normally charge for a yard like that?
- A: If I won't film it, between 2 and 3 times the weekly maintenance price, but you really shouldn't look to me for how to price lawns. Develop your own cost per man hour to cover YOUR expenses/profits/savings/etc and then multiply that times how long you think it will take to complete the job, plus any additional fees you may want to add on for 'headache' yards or clients. If you line up 100 lawn care guys to bid on an overgrown lawn like this, I am willing to bet more often than not I will be in the lower third or even quarter of bid amounts because I am wanting to make a video on the property (which again, can generate much more revenue than a one time clean up ever would. Many times I bid to get the job, not cover my expenses.

Here is why I mowed this lawn for $30: ua-cam.com/video/FNaTJ61032U/v-deo.html
Abt 10cm
@Wayne Tetreault Most edgers will have pre set settings, if the lawn has never been edged before I would recommend for ease just get it to ground level. And then work your way down as do it again and again.
The reason I say this is if you try to go to deep on a new lawn you're likely going to end up without a straight cut.
I found the best depth to be about 3 to 4 cm or about 1 - 1.5 inches.
Lines are shitty
Mowing in circles and not lining up that yard. 🙄
Ooh, 69th likeee
I think I'm turning into my dad. I'm sitting here watching someone do lawn work and finding myself excited about the edge work

So it's true you are son of your dad

When I bought my house, the grass/dirt was overgrown like that. I edged it, and a few days later, I saw everyone out edging theirs. Started a trend. 🤣
Nice! Everyone else had to keep up! :D

Competition is very contagious. Even if people claim to not care, they care. If you start out performing them, especially people like your neighbors, 9 times out of 10 they’ll feel that competitive instinct kick in and whip into shape,
Good on you man!
It’s mostly the wives saw it and told their husbands to do so because “our neighbors did it”.

I can’t believe that he did all that job just for $30 dollars wow 😯
Money well spent
If he got revenue from UA-cam,that could be extra 3k USD for 2 M+ views or more idk¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Looking it like that it may be worth it. I doubt advertisers for lawn care products are paying that much in ad cents but maybe 1k for 2 million views. Still worth it. If he was not uploading this though doing that for 30 dollars is operating at a loss. After taking his time + cost and wear and tare on his tools he made nothing on that deal. Where I live that would have cost me easily 150 to do. I get rural florida he can't charge that much but assuming he wasn't uploading this I would say the minimum he should charge for what he did was 60 bucks.
The mow and regular trim would be 40$ but since it was overgrown that would be 15$. Then 20$ for the shrubs. So 75$ would be good then the next mow the trim would be easy so it would be 30$ or 40$.
I would have done $45

Sir, you’re the reason I started doing lawn care 👍
I need to get one of those “hockey sticks” you’re using to lift the overgrown grass off of the concrete with.
Had a few of these lawns this week. So glad I picked up a new edger, cut through thick St Augustine like butter. Looks good.
The right tool is a requirement for edging for sure!
This reminds me when my dad and I used to work abandoned yards for extra money for the family. Good memories, but man I hated weed eating. I really miss my dad.
I am glad you have some good memories to think of!
Just stumbled up your channel, good to see a Jacksonville guy making some cool videos. I definitely find yard manicuring satisfying!
Looks so much nicer...good job trimming the shrubs!!
Personally when edging something that overgrown I would cut at a slight angle back so next time it rains it doesn't wash the soil right back on the sidewalk. I used to cut stuff like this all the time.
The street curb is lower than everything else, so I don't think it matters what angle I cut it, soil is not going to ignore gravity.
I would never call that an overgrown yard. The grass was quite short and tidy, just the edging and hedges needed a good trim. There a quite a few properties in my area (Qld Australia) that you can barely see the house behind several metres of bush.
Did you watch the intro? I literally said the same thing :D
@@CopperCreekCuts I guess I was going by the description where you call it 'an overgrown hot mess'.
You obviously take a lot of pride in your work. It is satisfying to see hard work pay off. When I did housecleaning I took a lot of pride in my floors. My ladies said no one made their floor as clean as I did. It meant a lot to me.
How satisfying for you to see the results. Excellent work.
Property itself didn’t seem that bad just the edging.
Yep, as said in the intro aside from that and the shrubs the lawn wasn't' bad.
must be nice having a lawn that isnt 50% patchy grass, dust gets everywhere when i mow
GoGo Kill it and reseed it with grass of your choice
If you let the clippings build up over the hard packed dirt eventually it will break down into good dirt and the grass will grow. That’s what contractors do, lay hay down and it helps the grass grow a lot after they graded dirt.
GoGo Biodiversity is cool as long as it isn’t all invasive crap. It may not be “weeds” or crap, it’s just not boring monobiological turf grass. Like my yard has a whole bunch of different types of grasses and littles plants growing in it. Also, i’d suggest looking up turning your yard into a meadow which is pretty cool even though I don’t do it specifically.
I normally wear a mask when mowing just for that reason!
Moss people moss. It looks great, you dont have to cut it, feels great on bare feet, survives anything and is good for diversity and local insects.
I don't think I've seen anything more satisfying. Like I kind of try to take care of my lawn, but it rains and the grass grows back so quick that its sometimes pointless.
i respect you for doing work like this but i respect you even more for telling where you got your equipment. super humble of you👍🏽
Don’t let that HOA continue to lowball you, ask a resident how much their HOA fees a month are and multiply it by every house in the complex, they have enough to pay you. Unless it’s a super small community 😪

The questions nobody ever answers are:
- How much do you get paid for that? (If it took you an hour let's say, what's the bill? $25? $50? $100?)
- How much does it COST you in terms of gas, wear and tear on your equipment, time driving to the location, etc...... ?
- How do you get their business when there's 1000 other companies doing the same thing and everyone wants something for nothing?
