    So I have a 2008 Nissan Maxima se v6 3.5L
    I got the code for the step motor malfunction, on the freeway at 75mph it was like stuck at 4th gear or something because it was at 5k - 5.5k at 75mph!? Can this possible fix my issue? Or is my cvt gone? 160k miles also have been changing cvt fluid every 40k miles.

      Welding Junkie you might need to have it flashed as long as the shifting issue was resolved. I have seen where the code had been present for a while and not addressed creating a “hard code” where only some snap on scanners can clear or only dealer scanners can. I didn’t have to my particular case. Bare in mind, another issue associated with the code could be present other than the stepper motor. Anywhere between a loose ground or voltage drop to valve body. Feel free to post the code that your are getting and I’ll do a bit more research for you and find troubleshooting steps

    What are the symptoms of a bad or failing stepper motor? My Nissan Sentra is jerking as I accelerate through 30-40 mph. It is almost every time. It also jerks at higher speeds like highway 55-75 mph even at steady speed it jerks sometimes, like the rpm bounces. Thoughts? Could this be the stepper motor, or not even transmission at all?

    Does anyone know what the symptoms are leading up to diagnosing a faulty stepper motor? My OBDII code on my JX35 produced an error code suggesting the stepper could be faulty (P1778) and another saying transmission pressure was low (P0746) and the pressure control solenoid might be faulty.
    My driving symptom was simply press down the accelerator to the floor, the engine doesn't rev up, the car doesn't move. Initially, it just didn't move QUICKLY. It would eventually get up to about a 15 or 20 MPH speed, then would take off and go like normal until the vehicle stopped again, then the process would repeat. Now, it just doesn't seem to move at all.
    Does this symptom sound related to the stepper or solenoid?

      @@tonymejia2497 Sadly, no :( I haven't invested the money yet. I have never found a stepper motor advertised specifically for my transmission. Don't know why that is. I've decided that when I do buy a part, I'll replace the whole valve body for around $400 to $500 on eBay. It's a lot less than the cost of a new transmission plus dealer installation but still, that's a lot of money that could be a potential be wasted if it doesn't fix it.

      if the transmission has over 100k miles and has never been serviced, the new fluid has conditioners and additives that could cause the clutches to swell and eventually can cause the transmission to start slipping. At least that has been my experience with high mileage transmissions that have never had their fluid replaced and a repair like this is needed.

    I`m curious. It seems you are not replying back to anyone in the thread. Did this fix you problem or not? Valve Body $3K? You must have meant a whole Remanufactured complete CVT Transmission. An entire Valve Body can be purchased $140 - $900. Fluid information you are giving is vague. You should always fill fluid to required level and should use Nissan CVT NS-2 (green) or Nissan Ns-3 depending which cvt you have. If your fluid has 100k miles and it`s not black and burnt, you can still change the fluid with a drain and fill. A flush is not recommended . Usually 4-5 qts will come out with D&F. The transmission holds 8 qts. Can the stepper motor Rod be adjusted? One video I have seen can work with a 9 volt battery. Not sure if that works. You can purchase a step motor tester to help adjust rod. Thanks for the video, but you seem to be in a bad mood and not motivated doing this simple repair.

My understanding from what your saying is that he should drain it and replace that same fluid back in since I haven’t had it serviced. It’s at 168000 miles. Pedro Tovar yes, try to use us much of your old fluid as possible but you should replace the filter. If you have to add more than a quart, get the Nissan fluid if less then a qt it won’t hurt to add an additive like Lucas transmission conditioner or even an anti slip just to reach oil level. But if your issue was never a gear slipping issue, just use the conditioner from Lucas oil. Hope this helps, best of luck brother

    Nice! The 2012 Altima requires you drop the valve body to access the stepper motor...What are common symptoms of bad stepper motor?
    I just tore apart valve body and cleaned it, tested solenoids, changed both filters and added new fluid for a P0746 code.
    Road tested car, it drove the best it has in a long time! After about 20 mins i was driving about 60-65 kph (roughly 40-45mph) then i pushed the pedal a little harder and the revs stayed up and the code trigger the light. Returned home and scanned it. I was shocked the P0746 code has dissapeared, but i now have a new code.
    P1778 which is for stepper motor.
    But reading online that many times stepper motor code appears when you have a bad trans...
    Any ideas?

      if its over 100k miles and never been serviced yes. New fluid will potentially affect clutches on these and older models if it was never serviced. You can use a new filter just use as much of the older fluid as possible.

  • @Dang911
    @Dang911 6 років тому +2

    Great video! I have an 06 Murrano which often revs to 3-4k while picking up speed slowly (like a manual held in first gear). The transmission after revving high like finally clamps down on the ratio, rpms go down and the car accelerates normally. The car has thrown the P1778. Do you think this stepper motor is the culprit? Also can you clarify what you meant by make sure you put in the same oil you took out, the same type or literally the used oil?

    • @jeangusrz5898
      @jeangusrz5898  6 років тому +3

      That sounds very similar to what my issue was and with the same code. You would want to replace the stepper motor and I'm pretty confident will solve the issue. In regards to the Transmission fluid, if you have over 110k miles and it has never been serviced before, do not replace old fluid with new. Reuse what you drained. New Fluid has conditioners and additives that will swell the clutches (which has less than a standard automatic replaced by belts but are still present). It will shift beautifully for about 3 months but will dissolve them shortly after and once that happens you will need a new transmission. You could add transmission treatment to compensate if your level is low after the repair but avoid using new oil as much as you can. Hope this helps. Cheers!

      @@jeangusrz5898this is the kind of information that will kill someone's transmission. I think the best advice is for people to go and buy new fluids from the dealership or do some research and find something equivalent to the factory transmission fluid. Using the same burnt old fluid will cause more damage to a CVT than ever. This is why it is recommended to get it replaced by 60k miles. If it wasn't done at 60k and the transmission is still running at 120k then they just got lucky and should consider an emergency transmission fluid replacement with filter. I did this to mine and it is still running beautiful for over a year with "Idemitsu CVT" Fluids.

    What’s up man. Question. I have a 2011 Nissan Maxima and I’m having shifting issues with my car. I checked my transmission oil and it seems good, hasn’t leaked or smell burned. But my car is like not shifting properly. I warm the car up and drive and it feels like it’s stuck in first gear. I have an exhaust on my car so when I switch from regular Drive (D) to manual i can tell that the values open and the sounds are much different therefore the car must be switched gears manually. So I’ll drive and the car shifts up to 6 and back down to 1 but it seems to not rev match the gears when I’m downshifting. I’ll shift down from 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 and there will be no difference. The car accelerates normally and switches between the P,R,N,D normally. No jerks or anything nor any delays. I did have my transmission oil renewed sometime last year (2018) because I cracked my transmission pan cuz of a bump so should I put in new Tran oil or reuse the same after I replace the old step motor ? I read the code it says “P177” and googled it and it relates to the step motor. I also want to say that when I turn on cruise control the green light flashes and doesn’t stop, nor does it let me set the cruise at a speed. Just want some input from what I’ve said thanks bro.

    • @jeangusrz5898
      @jeangusrz5898  5 років тому +1

      Based on what your describing, I believe your issue could be both electronic and hydraulic issue in relation with the stepper motor. I would replace the valve body and re flash the transmission ECM. depending on your mileage, you might want to see in what condition the cvt band might be in depending also on how long you have been driving it under this condition. Hope this helps.

    • @beastguard2
      @beastguard2 5 років тому

      Jeangus Rz yes I’ve ordered a new valve body a remanufactured one, the seller says it’s a direct fit and it’s “plug and play” and doesn’t need programming. I have been barely driving it. And if I do I keep it local and under 30mph. Avoiding any crazy pressure on the car. My mileage is 111k. And what do u mean “re flash” ? Like reset the electronic control module ? Also what do u mean cvt band ?

  • @wtfis23

    Seen this vid don't know if you still reply. But my 2012 altima would take a bit of accelerating to change gears so my bro figured he'd change the tranny fluid. The problem persisted and worsened and now the 1778 code appeared. And now the car shifts even slower seems to be only going from 1 straight to 5.
    Im gonna try the step motor but I read your replies so should I put the old Tran fluid back in the car if the step motor fix works? I'm at 140k?

    • @jeangusrz5898
      @jeangusrz5898  6 років тому

      AS far as replacing the stepper motor yes although the stepper motor for the P12 is slightly different design but same location. When the stepper motor fails, the vehicle will normally stay on a lower gear as you are on cruising speeds 60mph or higher. If your shifting problem occurs only when its cold, 1 of 2 things could be failing. Either the primary variator pressure sensor is failing or the primary valve spring of Valve body is sticking. The Variator sensor will give a specific DTC code and can be easily accessed and replaced. However, for the valve spring, my experience has been better replacing the entire valve body than replacing the spring. Almost the entire Valve body has to be torn completely apart and when you consider the cost of replacing the gaskets and possible bearings and misc moving parts, its just to much of a pain to do it.

    • @claytonrhoades4595
      @claytonrhoades4595 6 років тому

      The car has been to a mechanic and the original diagnostic test showed that the speed sensor was faulty. That was changed and the turbine sensor was changed and the car was ok for about a week but the problem returned. The sensor was changed again and same story. Now we just using it as is because there is no error code on diagnostics and everyone is confused. After going through some Nissan forums I saw the stepper motor problems and it is sounds like my problem. As I said earlier, when the car is first started, it will not change up. Sometimes if I park on the side of the road and manually go through the gears from D to L a couple of times it seems to get it working properly. It runs smoothly through the suburbs stopping and going with no problem. The problem starts again after the car is parked for a short period. Will this damage the auto transmission if not sorted?

    Your video would've been great, IF you turned your camera 90 degrees. This would match your monitors; because both have the same aspect ratio. 1080p X 1920p. (16/9 aspect ratio. Or...for every 16 inches wide you need 9 inches high)
    This would fill in the monitor completely. As it is, MOST of your picture is blacked out. Our eyes were not designed to see NARROW and TALL photos. Oh yes. The reason for 1080p X 1920p, is eye doctors discovered that this is how our eyes see naturally, when they are still.
    For many years they thought it was 4/3 (Like old movies and TV's), but as technology evolved they realized that was wrong. So when they went to High Definition, they changed the aspect ratio to 16/9. (Note: Some movie pictures are wider. This is to mimic when we scan our eyes in the horizontal motion. So in the future, all TV's will be wider. Or 2.1/1 ratio.)
    For what it's worth.

    I have a Nissan Versa Note SV 2014 with a CVT. I recently had the fluid replaced at Nissan because it would shudder when accelerating from a slowdown. The oil change definitely cleared up the shudder and the car runs smoother, but the shifting issue is still there. When I accelerate from a standstill, the RPMs wont drop and shift unless i ease off the gas pedal a little. If I don’t ease off the pedal, the RPMs keep climbing with the speed climbing very slowly above 45mph. Could this switch in your video be the cause of my problem or is it something else? I’ll be honest and say I waited till 122k miles to finally change my CVT fluid. I would appreciate your feedback on this.

      It looks as though your transmission is stuck in first or second gear. Based on all the information I'm getting it may very well be this stepper motor. If you want to do it yourself you really have to have the lifts and jack stands to make it safe. To confirm if its this motor that has to change do a scan check.

    Your telling people to reuse fluid? Come on you NEVER reuse fluid EVER ! They(manufactures) Claim CVT are sealed and fluid is good for life of vehicle but thats is complete BS. The transmission fluid in ALL vehicles should ALWAYS be changed about 80k-100k for first time , then every 40-60k every time after first! Yes they remove the dipstick but they STILL should be serviced at 80-100k if you want your vehicle to last to 200-400k ! Just like oil changes should NEVER be greater then 5k no matter if you use conventional or synthetic for gas engines and 8-10k for diesels!This is if you want least amount of issues with longest use MOST of time! (there are exceptions to rule due to way people abuse vehicles)

      Thanks for the feed back. I am aware and agree with you the CVT fluid its really not good for life like they say it is. However, In my experience with almost any automatic transmission, if it has not been serviced and you change the oil after 100k + miles, you will own that transmission. The new fluid can contain additives and conditioners that can ruin worn clutches due to lack of service. Continuous usage of the same oil will prolong what will be eventually inevitable when proper maintenance is not performed. Thats why even at dealers or any service station will not perform the service unless they have records of being previously done or they will require a waiver if the customer insists, releasing them from any responsibility. When the fluid is change, the effect will not be immediately. In fact it will work even better than new since the clutches will swell and provide a better grip. But I can assure you, 3 to 4 months down, it will not pass 2nd gear if any at all.
