  • BOOM, another Nissan with major CVT problems!
    This 2012 Nissan Rogue at 107k miles refuses to shift to higher gear ratios.
    Feels like the transmission is slipping severely when torque is applied.
    Several codes are set, but the P1778-Step Motor Failure comes back instantly.
    Enjoy!

      It was cheaper to build than fix the cvt. JATCO who builds Nissan CVT rather build complete unit for pennies to be replaced. Notice Nissan Service departments will not open cvt, just want to replace not fix. Dealers will diagnose or possibly replace Valve Body, that`s all.

And one should use the prescided type of oil. At the end it's much cheaper then a new transmission. But this counts for all proper maintainance.

    Change the step motor and put new oil in - it will run fine, unless Ivan didn't tell us everything the owner shared about the CVT behavior a bit before, before the issue. The job is labor intensive and quite messy - on most CVT the stepper motor is not accessible without removing the valve-body. I'm not a mechanic and took me 5h to do that + it took me 2h extra to find on the web witch bolts to remove in order to get the valve-body out. Ivan is a master, plus he has the tools and probably his alldata subscription will give him the bolts location in a jiffy.

      Actually, any transmission can be killed in this environment if they are always run in regular "D" mode. They should be be downshifted at least one gear, put in "Sport Mode," or put in "D3" in they are a regular transmission. Same goes if you are driving around town at under 35mph. Especially if the town is hilly. Police around the country figured this out because when they ran regular "D" mode in their police cars driving around town constantly, it would destroy their transmissions. They solved this issue by issuing orders to use "D3" all the time unless they were on the highway.

    Jatco was good at building regular conventional Automatic transmissions and transaxles. Just not CVT’s. I do agree that the Jatco CVT is probably the worst transaxle on the planet currently in recent automotive history. Regular automatic transmissions are more solid mechanically than that piece of crap. That Jatco CVT has a very weak belt in it which is very weak to heat. If that belt breaks I think Nissan recommends that you replace the whole unit than repairing it. Most transmission shops wouldn’t want to rebuild those CVTs. Both regular manual and automatic transmissions are way more durable than CVT’s by the look of the mechanicals. A couple of old school automatic transmissions that will beat this Jatco CVT by a long shot and in the long run will be these legendary models such as the Ford C6, Mopar Torqueflite 727, and GM THM-400 and these are gods in strength compared to the Jatco CVT.

    Ok Ivan. I just had a customer come in with a failed CVT on their 13 Rogue. Trans shop put in a remanned unit directly from Nissan since I don't do transmissions, but it wouldn't 'shift' from out of low range. Contacted Nissan. They said the TCM/PCM needed to be reflashed before the new trans would work and learn properly. Cost $220.00. Then it works fine. Ever run into that before?

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

      The TCM needs to be forced to "re-learn" with a scanner. Had to do that on my wife's Rogue with the Snap-On Verus.

  • @JW-fm2cy
    @JW-fm2cy 3 роки тому +10

    You know you can just replace the stepper motor right? The transmission itself and the gears are still good, it's just that the stepper motor is mechanically faulty and not shifting when told to by the tcm. Drop the transmission pan and filter. The stepper motor will be right there in front of you. Two small screws and one plug. Replace with new stepper motor. Refill with correct fluid and your good to go.

  • @jamesdean1598
    @jamesdean1598 3 роки тому

    Some of the comments are lack of knowledge with these transmissions. First Nissan recommendation is to change the fluid every 30-50k or every two years. Also the CVTs have two filters that need to be changed when servicing them. Yes two filters! Spill and fill is not enough. Also you cannot drag race with a CVT or you will shorten its life. Yes parts fail, although you still have to keep up with the service.

    My 2011 Altima cvt failed at 145K. Just replaced at $4100. Remanufactured cvt with only 12k or 1 year warranty. Usually remanufactured items are better than original or OEM due to upgraded parts or design improvements that rectify fault from original design by some code or law. Need to look up information concerning New vs Remanufacture parts. But, my neighbor has a 2013 Altima (one of the worse years for cvt) he had his cvt replaced by Nissan for FREE at 85k original miles. It finally went out again at 325k miles. So the original cvt failed at 85k and the remanufactured failed after 245k miles. BTW he never changed his cvt fluid on both, no maintenance. I`m going to drive mine more gently and keep maintenance timely. I also had a very small leak in my cvt after 130k. At 146k miles and now a newer remanufactured cvt, I`m hoping to go another 150k miles. But I`m going to split my driving with other cars I have. I`m retired, don`t want to have car payments. My 2002 Honda CRV is going strong at 400k miles. And my 1997 Dodge van is still strong at 285k miles. I now drive maybe 30 - 50 miles per week total, if that. Maintenance and drive only if you need to. Be amazed how much we drive when you can walk or bike.

    I'm in Australia. I have a 2011 2.5L 4wd model (Renault Koleos - almost same car). Among other codes, I was getting p1778 mostly. My CVT was slipping like crazy for a week or so, then it stopped slipping and moved into a thing where it wouldn't get out of first gear. Or, put the foot down to go forwards and it would crawl, never getting faster. So I decided to swap out the easy things first before facing a full auto replacement: Firsty, I swapped in a replacement cvt ECM, and it didn't fix it. So then I swapped out the stepper motor that sits inside the auto's valve body.. still no good. Then I swapped out both input and output speed sensors on the cvt outer case itself - no change still. So then I swapped out the 4 individual wheel speed sensors. No success. Now my last chance - I've just bought a complete cvt valve body, which will include yet another stepper motor, plus all the other bits too - solenoids etc, so I'll swap that whole thing over - it's basically the last cheap option before I junk the car. All the parts I bought so far are returnable for a credit from the buyer, so thus far, has only cost me my time. But this is the ONLY way I can try to save the car. I don't expect the valve body swap to work. Could also be the cvt oil cooler, or even the cvt oil pressure pump, both reasonably easy to swap out. But I'm losing my will to live on this thing.

So my only way out is to swap out little things and hope they work. But realistically, I think it’s the oil pressure pump located deep inside the CVT that’s at fault, and there’s no way I’ll get that done on a car that’s only worth $2500! I’m afraid this car is doomed to be bronzed! Pity.. I love it!

There are relatively accessable drain/over-fill ports on the transmission without even taking into account the filter(which changing is a bit more controversial) so I never really understood the fuss about it being extremely difficult to do. However, out of the people I do know that have had a failed CVT had either never changed the fluid, used non-oem fluid replacements, or bought the vehicle used with sketchy service history.
