the Pico 4 has a lower PPD. Saying that the Pico is higher resolution is somewhat misleading because the numerical pixel advantage it has.... those pixels are outside the users field of view.
The quest has smaller panels with a higher ppi, with the panels being canted, so there are less "dead pixels" outside of the users POV.
I have used both headsets for a few hundred hours combined. I can easily read everything in the F-16s MFDs with the Quest 3. With the Pico4, text is noticeably more blurry and I have to lean in reading smaller numbers. And saying that the blacks on the Pico4 is just false. If you set both panels to their respective peak brightness, of course the Pico4's black is darker, they're LCD panels after all, but the Quest 3 has the overall better contrast, even if by a light margin.
I ended up selling my Pico 4 because for my individual use case (with is almost explosively DCS with a bit of Beat Saber), the Quest 3 is just the better headset, be it with the downside of being heavier in the front (which I dislike).
That's what I immediately thought after his black levels comment, completely clueless. Of course lower brightness display (or set to a lower brightness level) will have better blacks!
Are you not able to turn down the brightness settings of the Q3, like you could with the Q2? I always thought that improved night flying (a little at least).
4:43 did you turn down the brightness and blue light in the quest 3 headset? Because to me it's much less grey then the OLED in my Rift CV1.
I was looking to buy one of these anyway (so thanks for this video!) and just yesterday opted for Quest 3. Given your recent videos on the Quest 3's dead pixels problem, I was seriously thinking of giving it a miss but first one I bought appears to not have this problem, or at least not that I've detected yet, so quite relieved about that. Having previously owned a Quest 2, I liked the fact I could just plug it in and set up was already done pretty much as Oculus app ported over all games/settings. I also liked I could opt for 80Hz refresh rate (something I couldn't do with Pico 4) As for the head strap, I agree it is not the most comfortable but I played for a few hours last night and was OK with it. Saying that, have already opted for a third party elite head strap at £33. Facial interface I can live with though and the existing USB-C cable I had was fine so have spent just over £500 in the end. Flying MSFS, compared to Quest 2 it is better with the pancake lenses i.e. crisper/sharper image. I wouldn't say difference is night and day but then I'm also limited by my PC/graphics card so can't have the settings to the max
With the Quest 3 it's not only seeing individual pixels but jagged edges too. It's like AA does not even work on Q3 screens. I put a video with examples about that on my channel.
And I did try running OpenXR on Pico today, put max 3.7k resolution and I could not tell the difference in sharpness between both headsets.

I’m having some weird issues with my Link cable and Q3. My task manager performance shows my CPU @30-40% utilization and my GPU @ 70-78% during VR flight, but when I open my debug tool it’ll show 32fps and -40% headroom. Any ideas what’s going on?
While I acknowledge the Pico 4's appeal, especially price-wise, the Q3's ecosystem and the potential for future updates tipped the scales.
Meta's strides in improving comfort and immersion are commendable, but there's room to grow.

I think because the screens are straight on it I never noticed that before but it is there as well. Personally, I think the screen door in the Quest 3 is more apparent because the lenses are so good that you can resolve the individual pixels in more of the space.
Also brightness will be a factor...

With the Quest 3 being my 5th VR headset, I finally sold my Quest 2 and Pico 4. For me, the Quest 3 combines all the good points of the other two but is a little bit better in every regard (exept, for now, comfort, obviously). I was running my Q2 with Kiwi elite strap and facial interface and I put the AMVR facial interface and BoboVR P4 battery holder, cushioned top strap and head cushion in my P4, which made its comfort even better. Plus the AMVR hand straps made the controllers look like a twisted torture device, but made playing with them absolutely amazing.
I know the friend I sold the P4 to is going to get a lot out of them for a long time still and I can't wait to get my hands on the BoboVR M3 for my Quest 3.
Btw another one of the great Features of the P4, showing they were thinking about consumer convenience, are the magnetically attachable and changeable lens inserts and facial Interface. That was a clever and really nice touch.
What about versus the the bigscreen beyond? I have it pre-ordered. I already have lighthouses and controllers from the index.
Will the pico work WITHOUT steam? I have a low end pc and i use oculus rift s atm, i play dcs world and i dont like to use steam as its taxing on my pc so i need a good upgrade vr headset for flight sims and iracing whilst im building a better pc..!
Fantastic review and as always very relevant to flight sim. If it wasn't for the fact that I hate everything to do with Facebook and their practices (and imagine many are on the same boat), the pico 5 (if the rumors are really ture) make me more excited than Valve Deckard (since I got a feeling that Valve will try to focus on XR and incorporating it to Steam Deck somehow) and Somnium Space (with their lack of experience in VR). I suppose its gonna be another year of wait before upgrading from the Index, but this review actually made me consider Pico 4 as a temporary solution in the meantime 😅

I have really been enjoying the Quest 3. I ordered adapters from AliExpress for my Kiwi Designs comfort strap... I do hate the Q3 oem strap. My biggest complaint with the Q3 is the link cable video compression. I have an i7-9700k, and I have to keep the encode bitrate around 400-500. The other minor Q3 complaint is that the battery does drain when using the link cable for pcvr.. it's not horrible, but definitely worse than the Q2. The screen door effect is there, but I blame the super sharp lenses for that.
Yeah I feel your pain with the supplied headstrap. Also loving the Quest 3. I use this thing wirelessly and it's amazing. I do have a dedicated 6e router with the PC plugged in, so doesn't matter what your PC supports if you use eithernet. Gives me up to 2401 Mbps although I just stick with VDXR for now using AV1 10-bit 200 bitrate with TAA in the sim and it looks great.
What about text sharpness on the glass cockpits etc? The Quest 2 is so blurry it's impossible to read glass cockpits even when leaning right next to it.

Spot on review, I have pico 4 for driving/flight sim and valve index for other games as tracking is flawless. I took my pico to a friend who has quest 3 for comparison and had a similar experience to you but was disapointed with meta not really making a bigger difference given its new. Have you tried the reality mixer on steam?
Index pales in comparison to the quest 3 and even the pico my dude, the glare and screen door effect make the index far too expensive for the performance. It’s too long in the tooth at this point

Hi. I’m new to the channel, although not new to flight simulator. I am considering getting a VR headset. May I ask, does the internet download speed have any affect on the VR experience at all ? Many Thanks
Internet speed has zero effect, only GPU and CPU affect smoothness VR. The area being flown over is downloaded ahead of time and the amount of data is less than it would seem. In addition, the data is saved on the PC disk, so that it is already downloaded on a repeat flight. MSFS2020 allows the user to download a selected area to the disk, which many users do not even know.
Pico4 is better value, but your missing out on the edge to edge clarity and slightly better lenses IMO. Also i couldn't cope with the pico4's weird warping issue i found and this was on 2 units i had!. Plus in the not too distant future, you will be able to see with the Quest3 your own peripherals as in throttle and stick in mixed reality mixed in with the virtual aircraft - now that i cant wait for :)
i use voicemeeter with virtual desktop and pico4. i can boost the volume/bass/treble loud enough and beyond. highly recommended, voicemeeter!
For use exclusively on MSF2020/2024, to play wired, which one would you recommend, the Pico3 because it has DisplayPort (less rendering loss), or the Quest3 because it is slightly superior and newer ??? Video card, RTX3060. Thanks.
I'd recommend the Crystal Light, although your GPU needs an upgrade for both the Quest 3 and Crystal Light.
if i buy pico 4, and i want to run it through cable, do i need to get a cable or it is included in the box?
you need to buy a usb-c DATA cable at least 5Gbps. They are only cheap £10
1:07 Just got mine in and man does the eye strain relief acaully work! But yeah to note while I think they are worth it the magitism, blue light are extras and my case of the the defaults was brandless and with out the shink wrap... Still I do think they are worth it even if the marketing is misleading.
Tried both, actually found my Pico sharper with less distortion, but I put that down to both headsets apparently having a wide variation of lens quality. It really comes down to quality control variations with both the Pico and the Quest 3, and both companies seem to not be the most consistent on that front. Tracking was better in the Pico too, but only narrowly. I had high hopes for the Q3, ended up returning it, I'll be waiting out for the next generation (of either Meta or Pico) I think. Also, as someone who spent years in the Oculus/Meta ecosystem, I have a lot more faith in Pico when it comes to them not randomly breaking my headset with botched updates, haha.
for those considering a Pico 4 in the USA., ebay has a listing, 3 days to go, $150+ with full BOboVR GeekVR halo strap. etc.. likely ends around $250 market avg. killer deal.
For me the quest 3 doesn't have any screen door effect. I think maybe it's because of your lense spacer setting. I have mine 2nd from the lens. I tried to find dead pixels as you recommended, but I couldn't find the pixels. Maybe I'm blind, but it seems like the screen door effect isn't there. Also, I think it may have something to do with the link compression, cause in standalone mode, the resolution looks great.
Not sure if it would be called screen door effect but I definitely notice how edges can look jagged, presumably because of the pixel arrangement
Oh it does. I guess it depends on if you've come from a headset with higher resolution you may notice it more. Colours just aren't as solid as they might otherwise be. Not an issue for me, it's a shame but the image still looks great.
@quidnunc01 That is called aliasing. There are different anti-aliasing techniques used to minimise aliasing on the edges of meshes. However, the better ones come at a higher performance loss, so in standalone mode, the AA is obviously worse as it doesn't have the graphical power to improve it as it can on a high end PC.
@dtrjones I've got a Reverb G2 and have witnessed the Pimax Crystal, too. I can agree the colours are insanely worse in comparison to something like a crystal, but I don't know why I am struggling to see a screen door effect. I think I might be going blind haha🤣
@@JamieCrew no, this is independent of the render resolution. You could have high aa or supersampling and solid lines still appear jagged

what keeps me from insta buying the quest 3 is that the lense are so good an clear, that jagged edges due to the tilted display and SDE seem to be very visable due to it. also iam hearing people having problems with "binocular overlap" which is rather uncommon in headsets as it seems but the quest 3 seems to give some people with certain eyes, ipd or whatever a bad experience that they never had before. the way i understand the problem is: that if you look to the right, you can see a dark ring in your left ey, the end of the screen, bleeding into you center point of view
How do the two of them compare regarding compression losses?
The Pico 4 is limited to H.265 150 Mbit as opposed to the Q3's H.265 (as well as AV1) 200 Mbit limit.
The Pico 4 is limited to H.265 150 mpbs in its software, but if you write 200mbps in its .ini file, and if you have a recent CPU, it works.
Anyway 150, it's already a good value for stream 4k+ , but i've to admit, that 200 change a lot the picture quality !
I guess that Pico prefer to maintain a wide compatibility by doing this....
@@SETHalpine The issue is the decoding limit of the XR2 Gen 1. It can’t decode more than 150 Mbit on the h.265 codec, everything above it is h.264.
You can‘t simply out trick Hardware limitations, any visual gains you think you get by editing ini files are extremely likely to be just placebo.
Can you tell me how on earth do you change the weather in vr? I dont know how to open this menu in vr.

And VR requires In and Out functionalities
So you uses USB port...probably type A port...with 5Gbit/s....As may be like 90% of users who don't have an USB-Type C In&Out port on their motherboard
Most of users aren't using a good USB cable...(3.2 or 4.0 certified)
Pico in order to keep the decode latency under 20 ms, prefer to use value below 150mbps
Everything higher and the latency goes up
What are the performance of your image treatment before encoding (sharpening, upsampling, saturation, etc) and your render resolution...?
H265 is far more better than H264 at the same bitrate. But performance of your encoder can make difference...
Not all configuration are equal,
the 72Hz instead 90 Hz mode will provide better image quality since less frames need to be encoded+transmitted+decoded for the same bitrate.
In addition to that, the 72Hz is less demanding CPU wise
as said before, the XR2 chip itself is the bottleneck.
Do you think to have a Display Port would be better than a USB? (even if it's still compressed, and it's only mature in 2.0 and still require a USB for OUT data)
Because most programs from Meta, Pico, etc,... make the error of simply taking into consideration, USB 3.0 (5Gbit/s) Type A to adapt to the majority of configurations available, and as type A restricts performance... whereas in USB3.2 gen2 type C ** (videos and data up to at 20Gbit/s) we are largely at the level of DP1.4...
what about USB4.0 (40Gbit/s)! *
We then understand that RV manufacturers want to favor wireless.
*Please note, DP and USB in their latest version are not designed to exceed 3 m of cable...

Since with USB 3.2, you have a protocol called "DisplayPort 1.4 Alternate Mode" (8K 7680x4320@60Hz or 4K 4096x2160@120Hz...compressed...) + data transfer (videos and data up to 20Gbit/ s) + Power Delivery up to 60W, no need for Display Port 1.4....(+which still requires USB cable)

Can someone tell me, can you turn the cooling fan off on the Pico 4? I tried it a couple of months ago but found it was drying my eyes out.
the p4 updates have lowered the fan speeds, so much you can hardly notice it now and I thought my p4 was broke. I actually prefer they way it used to blow hard

Because I honestly do not notice any screen door effect in my Q2.... so if Q3 is the slightest bit better in that respect over Q2 I wouldn't notice it in the Q3. Thanks

Turn down brightness, turn off wifi, turn of hand tracking, turn down refresh rate.
There are some link cables that have a breakout to power in case your PC can't deliver it in the chosen usb port
@@quidnunc01 I think the issue is that the Quest 3 reduces the charging rate based on internal temps. People are having similar issues with the official add on battery.
Quest 3 will also eventually have pass through to allow us to see controllers IRL. THere are already apps out there now that enable it in a way.
So the Lenses in Q3 are so good you "see" the flaws of the displays... uuummmh Good Vid Steve.
I'm biased. Pico has Ethernet to USB-C capability. So if you have an AC or less WIFI set up and don't want to spend to upgrade to WIFI 6/6E for $200+, you can run a wired solution on Pico for ~$50 with ethernet to USB-C dongle that charges your hmd too. 1 thing annoys me in Pico is that using VD, SSW is not good enough. Motion reprojection is better on WMR G2 and ASW on Quest with SteamVR. VDXR now allows you to cut SteamVR out of the equation al together and that's bonus too.
Yes it's true, the lenses are exceptionally clear, no wonder SDE is visible in the Quest 3 but the display is exceptional otherwise, clarity, popping colours better than the G2.

Hi. I’m thinking about whether I should buy a pico 3 neo link VR headset. What do you think, will this work satisfactorily with my PC: Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2 Motherboard, Ryzen 5600X CPU, Gigabyte RTX 3070 GPU, Corsair Vengeance 32GB RAM…? Or should i generally forget the idea, using a VR headset with this GPU and CPU? I fly mostly VFR with smaller planes… Thanks!
Buy Pico 4 instead, pancake lenses are game changing and compression is not such a big issue if you use wire anyway, you can crank up bitrate. Downside - a little performance loss of the GPU due to encoding. But the upside you can eventually switch to wireless, with a good wifi you can get pretty nice quality.
I love my Pico 4 in pcvr.Very good value headset!
PICO is also better for people with high IPD, but worse for people with lower and kids. PICO physical range: 62-72 mm, Quest 3: 58-70 officially, but when I tried it I hit hard limit at 69 and it did not go higher. It resulted in much lower actual horizontal FOV than with PICO, since my actual IPD is 71.
I tried the elite strap for quest 3 and it was a little better but still uncomfortable. THe strap was like 80 dollars.

There was talk of them changing this but the one thing that puts me off even considering any Oculus/Meta HMD (bar the CV1 which I still have) is the requirement to have a Facebook account in order to actually use it.

Don't bro, go Q3 its worth it by far, will pay twice as much if I had to pick again, Pico 4 used to be my best value headset out there but Q3 simply another level in terms of gaming package with features
@@TRX25EX not sure the Q3 worth the higher value if I intend to use it only for MSFS and DCS. The PICO is cheaper and the difference is not quite big for the price difference.

The content in Q3 after the improvements it had over Q2 makes it worthy experience, but it you are sure you still won't use it then maybe Pico 4 is good value if you get it at the good price
I got pico 4 second hand for 180 bought a link cable and facepad for 40 great value for money. I use it mostly for racing sims and flight sims another thing to buy is virtual desktop better than pics software
I know what Meta was thinking regarding the headset strap:
If we make this uncomfortable enough people will go out and buy an elite headstrap.. same thing with battery life

Very good and honest review. Q3 wins as overall headset hands down, that's why I ended up buying it (just the 128GB) because I like to play some standalone titles and wanted to try the improved mixed reality. But I do agree that for just wireless PCVR the Pico 4 offers nearly the same visual clarity with around the same resolution (3% better than the Quest) and for a significant lower price, and without the need of buying extras like elite straps and thinks like that 🙂you can´t go wrong there.

I had the Pico 4 as well and if you use it as a standalone with all the improvements in mixed reality and better game store it is just better, but it is a personal opinion😊 in the other hand Pico comes with a much better comfort out of the box. And of course the Pico 5 will blow out the Quest 3, specially if the specs I've seen are true.

Yeah I have a P4.. I wanted to buy a Q3 right away, then I found out that, how I want the Q3 set up it'll cost me close to 900 euro... 899 or something like that.. I decided I still like my P4 for now...
I returned my mq3.. I'll buy later as sw updates make it better... but then again.. I have somnium vr1 on pre order.
I dont care black is black but burn in on oled. So meta quest 3 is a gamechanger because of laser tracking and stereo camera. Positioning and passthrough is a big thing. But good to use cable of my lawnmower to get 18 watt charger with me.
Pretty much agree with everything Steve. I only tried the Pico 4 at a mall once and it was a nice screen but I found the facial interface to be a little hard and uncomfortable, better than the Quest 3 though! One thing you didn't mention - the Pico has a rigid design so it does limit upgrade options. I ended up buying a Quest 3 and you're 💯 on the SDE, coming from the G2 it's pretty clear on the Quest 3, it's a shame but it's a bit like the sweetspot on the G2, you learn to live with it. Loving getting back into the Quest 3 store and picking up some older PCVR games which somehow I stopped doing on the G2. It's great for simming with the edge to edge clarity and I'm very happy with the purchase but will be buying a new headstrap! 👍
I think you should reevaluate your ad deal with VR Rock... I now have prescription lenses for my Pimax Crystal from both VR Rock and Hons VR and the VR Rock ones are much inferior optically... :(

Not quite sure on how you got to £700 for the quest with accessories, a head strap and decent link cable will cost between £50 and £70 for the pair making it around £550-£600

you are the only reviewer who mentioned the screen door affect on quest 3. I used the quest 3 for a little bit and I could see the pixels even though the resolution was so high. I haven't used many vr headsets and I just thought I was being too picky and this is just what all higher resolution headsets look like. Thanks for clearing that up. I returned the headset. I need something that looks clear.

Yeah, i laugh when all these youtubers say "the screendoor problem is a thing of the past". Either they are overly enthusiastic or lying. However the Quest 3 is not bad at all. But not there yet. No HDR, black still not black etc. The day I can look into a headset and see a near perfect true 60 inch clear OLED screen with no screen door and less pixelization, I will say we are closer. I suspect the Apple headset is at that level. One can only wait and see.

Yes I was thinking this. They'll only have link (DP) on the top end headset which is rumoured to be around $1000 which compares very well but we'll see if that ends up being the actual cost. Somehow I think it will be a couple of 100 dollars more.
@@dtrjones The problem is also the very high resolution of the Pico 5 Pro Max, I don't think there's PC hardware that'll be able to push that resolution for PCVR and that new XR2 Gen2 chip will be pushed probably beyond it's limits for stand alone at that resolution, I hope they add one HUGE battery in this thing or you'll only be able to use it a half hour at a time! LOL
I really wouldn't worry about resolution with all the upscaling technologies out there, it's a non issue. @@jackr.749 I even ramped my MSFS using TAA in VDXR and with the OpenXR Toolkit successfully was able to fly around Scotland at 6000x6000 and it was still running at around 25 fps. Absolute bonkers. So 4K displays per eye with upscaling is absolutely no problem at all.
Having spent years looking at the screen door effect in Windows mixed reality the screen door on the quest 3 is nothing. Just keep those bloody lenses away from Colin.
I decided to buy a Q3, in spite of the negatives I've read, and I must say I really like it.
Regarding the discomfort, it's absolutely horrific, but I did the same thing I do with my Quest 2 and put on a backwards baseball cap, and I have to say that, with the ballcap, the Q3 is as comfortable -- or even more comfortable -- than any other headset I've worn.

Without of course @@Copestetic! You don't need to faf with a baseball cap if you purchase one of the more comfortable headstaps.

@@dtrjones Tell 200 million americans it's a faf to put on a baseball cap, see how quickly you get your ass kicked to the curb.
Also, a baseball cap is one hell of a lot lighter than a 'pro' strap, and doesn't contribute to 'rotational inertia' problems.
