I lived in my car in the late 90's for about 3 years and I needed that time to get away from bills and people. I showered at truck stops. I would work part time as a waitress in different towns as I decided to travel and I always had plenty of cash to eat on and I saved most of what I made. My family called me nuts and mentally ill for living in my car. lol back then living in your car was seen as being just a homeless person. Looking back I should of just kept on living in my car. I had a peace of mind and freedom. Have fun people and be safe:)
@@Youareheretoo Back then everywhere you went was hiring for a waitress job. I liked working weekends and they gave me whatever I wanted. I kept it simple.
Makes sense! Yes there is a particular freedom about it
Yes that is so true! Now it is a life most envy!!
I wish it had occurred to me to do this back in the '90's! I fantasized about it, but it didn't seem like something I could actually do. Thank goodness youtube came along to change my mind! I'm trying to get things organized so I can get my car life started. Better late than never!
While going to college in late 70s,
I lived in a
Small VW van. Back then Everyone thought I was crazy. Most free and fun time of my life
I love this. I'm a CPA who walked away from consulting to be an artist. 😂 And now I'm preparing to take off in my awd Sienna and travel for years just because I want to. It's nice to see someone else say F the corporate life, F the money, and be a traveling nomad.
So true!! :)
After I left my violent ex I lived in my car for 2.5 years until I got my own unit it’s a roof over your head
Agreed, and thank goodness you were able to get out of that bad situation
It's a second chance in life for you, so your in control an live the best life ever😊 from someone who's been their...
As a man I unfortunately can relate. I wasnt ao worried about the physical violence but the constant threat of leaving a relationship when I stood up for myself. She figured because she was in a better financial situation that I wouldn't want to leave..truth is I was in love and she knew it and took advantage of the fact that I wanted deeply to remain in a stable relationship because my parents divorced and I didn't want to be them. I hope you're finding you worth and your value. I don't know you obviously but I'm proud of you for taking that leap 👏
@weareanonymous333 Probably only feasible in climates that aren't too hot, or in the colder months. I think in summer you would bake for sure.
I would give this comment more likes if I could. Glad that you’re doing well now. 😌
I have been doing it for the past 8 years and got used to the freedom and flexibility .
So true!
There's nothing wrong with living in your car, There's alot of people doing it, and sometimes that's all you have. I am sure over time you can expand from a car to a van or something bigger. I'm going to eventually have to do it. Today there's probably more people
Thanks! yep over time I'm sure it will evolve
Prepare.. if you rent now, many more people are getting priced out.
@weareanonymous333 it depends on your goal. I want to save for a deposit house
@weareanonymous333 been doing it for 8 years.
As for myself, it took a lot for me to downsize to my SUV and popup trailer. So, is this a put down? No, I admire you and anyone who can live like you are. Less is more. You can park anywhere, camp anywhere and so on. I started this lifestyle around three months ago. So far so good.
Best wishes with you and your suv-camper setup! We had a pop up when I was a kid and it was great
@@elizabethoffgrid Thank you. Best wishes to you too. It was hard for me to downsize as much as I did. But you did a much better job than I did. Way to go.
Bob... Been watching his channel since 2017 even though I was not living on the road yet. CheapRVliving was so helpful and that channel has come a long way.
I was on the road for a year and a half... Right before the pandemic even happened. So many great channels.
Love the Reality channels.
Thank you for sharing! Great informative video!!
Thank you! yes cheapRVliving is great
It's amazing how ingenious folks are adapting EVERYTHING to living space! It's so fun to have more options.
I've been thinking about living in a vehicle for awhile now. I can't afford to rent or buy a house right now, but apartment living sucks! 9 times out of 10 your neighbors will be horrible and you have to share walls and/ or air vents, and parking areas with them. My last neighbor was dealing drugs and smoking skunky pot all night. I am trying to move before the next horrible neighbor moves in. I am simply done with apartments and awful neighbors!
I hear you, I've had some bad neighbors including one who was threatening to me and my kid -- that is a big motivation for me, if I don't like my neighbors I just drive away :)
Couldn't say it better. Hate living in apts. Right now I'm really fortunate my neighbors ( 4 unit building), are quiet and great to live with. No loud music ,thank God. But at some point wanna move and thought of another apt gives me high anxiety. Just can't do it
I hear that, I'm being charged $1500 a month for a dump where the upstairs neighbors never leave and stomp from 9 am till 11 pm and another neighbor that plays loud music after 1 am and smokes which stinks up my apt to the point you think I'm the one smoking. Also infested with bats and roaches. Numerous complaints to the leasing office and nothing was ever done. So frustrating, I really don't want to rent again after this place and its super expensive in the Orlando suburbs.
Damn! I hope you can find a way to get out of there!@@Elysian40772
Yes, this is horrible, I'm so sorry you're dealing with that. I've had a similar experience and it really sucks. Apartment living caused me to have to hear two separate loud, violent couples argue almost everyday and it was troubling. Marijuana smells coming from the vents, ugh! Horrible!
Thank you for your honesty. It’s not easy but I’m glad you have a plan and goals.
Thanks!
I wondered why, so thanks for explaining. It's your business of course. I admired your dedication to pay off your bills. Things are tough in America so we all could use some relief with the costs. God bless you❤
I appreciate that!
Thank you for sharing!! ❤ I’m a free spirit and I looove travel so I’m looking into living in my vehicle for a period of time. Subscribed❤ and liked ❤
You are so welcome! ❤️
Your one smart cookie, im going to enjoy seeing you annihilate all your goals! 🔥
Thank you!! 😁
Nice! I think people who decide to choose living in a vehicle whether it be a van, car, ambulance etc in order to align with what they value in life like saving money, kinder to the environment, travel, spending more time outdoors instead of sitting on their asses on a couch, or to help with their overall mental or physical health are some of the smartest people. What you are doing IS the dream for me (but in a van probably a minivan to save gas) and maybe eventually get into a tiny home like you. I am married and my husband doesn’t understand this lifestyle (or tiny house life) and we have a young daughter so it’s not my reality right now but my goal is to save up for a minivan and then outfit it to sleep in and get out as much as I can for now. I’ve always been minimalistic in things I own so for me this lifestyle would fit. I’m envious of you! Congratulations and best of everything in your journey! ♥️
Thank you! A minivan can make a lot of sense -- good room for one person but less expensive
Once your husband experiences having a squatter either in your house or a neighbors house, he will understand clearly.
@@Lee-fb4oj there is a difference between someone who you describe, someone who has no choice but to be homeless, someone who has nothing, someone that has given up on life so they don’t care how they leave behind wherever they are sleeping so they don’t care about leaving their garbage lying around. Then there are people like this lady and others who CHOOSE to live this way and leave no trace when they camp out somewhere, she’s respectful of her surroundings and doesn’t leave garbage. Her reasons are different then someone who is actually homeless. Clearly someone hasn’t explained this to you or you haven’t figured this out on your own.
@@janetg14 yes, but my comment was directed to husband's attitude. I don't believe that a person living in their car is "homeless".
@@Lee-fb4oj ok it seemed like you were mocking people doing this lifestyle. I apologize
I was just recommending someone to your law UA-cam channel today and clicked through to this channel.
Just wanted to say that I love you and I'm cheering you on, big time! It's amazing how you're taking things into your own hands and making a big dent in your goals like this!
Thank you!! Great to see you here :)
Happy i found you. Loking forward to watching your other videos. Love your down to earth attitude & honesty. Keep em coming.!
Thank you so much!
I found your video by chance and now subscribed. The idea of living in a car or a van/car fascinates me in that you can just go wherever and not limited and store belongings for the seasons in a secure lock up somewhere ( we get them here in the UK inside factory style buildings). I like you love camping but my husband is just the complete opposite. I suppose being ex armed forces he has camped a lot over his military career and hates it. This is something I'm considering doing on a part time basis, just to travel and visit a part of the UK every weekend or during the week for a couple of days. I wouldn't be 100% like you being full time but I'm 51 yrs old now and you start to think about life more.😊
Yes it’s great to do even part time!
You have alot going on in your life. Living in your car sounds like the best thing for you right now.
Great !! glad I found you !!
Wow! This is crazy. I send you my best wishes and please be safe as much as possible.
Thank you, I will
Excellent attitude!

Hello Elizabeth!!!..Im in Arizona and also live in my car. I have 3 acres and want to build a tiny home on it...the idea is to not have a mortgage and the property is paid off...Im a Carpenter and long time tradesman but materials are very expensive...i live in my car to make it happen....no shame in that!! ....rock on!!!!😊😊
Sounds like you are very set up, with your experience! Best of luck to you
How much usually would the cost of a well be there ? I’ve looked at some raw land.. and what would be the percentage of finding water there on the land? I’m just curious..
I love seeing details because I'm super nosy. I admit it, it's true! 😊
Lol me too! :)
Good luck sister! I'm in a similar transition. Safe travels! 💜🙏
Thank you! You too!
We downsized and did the full-time RV thing for about a year and a half, but our timing was awful. The pandemic made all the campgrounds and repair facilities overflow with RV's and reservations were very difficult. So, we switched gears and relocated to the Pacific coast of Ecuador and we love it here! They just launched a new Digital Nomad visa too.
Sounds great - glad you found a situation that works well for you!! Yeah even now it’s hard to find empty spots and getting an RV repaired is hard
Love this. I have a no build camper van and am also looking at land in either New Mexico or Vermont. I’m camping as much as possible, off grid of course, as I care for an aging mother. Five years to retirement and I have plans! 🥰
Sounds great!
Really digging your channel 👍🏾... so honest, real, unapologetic & direct
I appreciate that!
Thank you for your video. Very inspirational! You are very positive and a lovely lady. Stay Safe and enjoy your travelling 😊
Thanks!
Hi Elisabeth, I’m Mona, and I like videos like yours, where people share their experience and thoughts about their unique lifestyle. I’ve been living in my car since 2018 and I very much enjoyed it. I live in Europe. Which of the states have you liked most so far? BTW, the name of the channel you were talking about is@CheapRVliving, it’s Bob Well’s. I like him, too: very helpful videos. I wish you a wonderful day. 🌷
Oh yes that's it, thank you! Bob has great content :) Hm I think my favorite state as far as natural beauty to see is Utah -- so many national parks that are amazing (but some get crowded, good to visit in the shoulder season).
One place I have to see I think would be the Tetons. It’s #1 on my bucket list!
So many people are trying to free up their lives now. I think it is great!
Rent has gotten ridiculous now. I’d rather be traveling!
Wow! I'm so proud of you! Your courage and ability to freely live in the world you created is so admirable!!!
Thank you for that!
loved everyday living out of my 4runner... now building a transit connect for next chapter of roadlife.. super happy 4 u!
Good luck with it!
Hi Eliz. I really enjoyed this video. Wish you well 🌸
Thank you! You too!
Hi Liz I have been living in my RV a sometimes my car for 5years now it not easy but it's home I just got a great gift of a new 36 foot boat and it's a live aboard so I hope to move to the boat soon cause there is no rent in the ocean I live on Vancouver Island so it's very pricey here it's more than two grand a month just for a campsite spot but the water is free so I will be moving asap good luck to you have many blessed trips in your car and stay safe and healthy cause being sick in a small place sucks
I didn't even think about how a boat doesn't have rent bc the water is free -- sounds so neat! Best wishes to you
I honestly believe this is the new normal with the price of Rent. More people are living in Cars vans and campers because housing is out of reach In the richest country!!!!😭
I hear you!!
It is getting more insane every day it seems. Land has at least tripled in less than a year now.
If you need land…. Get it soon.
This is true. I can afford a place, but I am not spending %70 of my income on it. Now I have no debt, no bills, total freedom, and my life is fully completely under my control. Best choic I ever made.
3:13 “cheap RV Living” and it is the channel of Bob Wells and he is the modern-day father of vanlife
You have a lovely personality ❤🙌
Oh thank you!
interesting reasons, we have lived in our older Rv for years, the economy had ruined our credit temporarily and we had to have a roof over our heads with our dogs and cats, a few seniors who passed to heaven, we still have 1 cat and 3 dogs, 2 were strays we took in, we fixed our credit and now looking for land in the smokies or a home, we want a tiny home rental and a home for us, hubby Donny just signed as a sales consultant for a local tiny home builder that is one of the most reasonably priced tiny home builders out there, I could not live in a car, because my back gets stiff and I need to stand and walk, but I have stayed in my car over night sometimes while traveling, best wishes ~ Joy
thank you! best wishes to you all also
I think living in your car sounds fun. I'm a lawyer, too, but i do family law which was definitely not negatively affected by covid. But it is emotionally draining. Good luck!
I bet!
You have a great plan. New subscriber.
Thanks and welcome!
Better save 100K for vehicle you're talking about that's used . If you don't stay in debt you won't get a loan. That is the game you know .nice dream .
Yep I agree that you need debt to have a credit rating!
Good for you!
Best wishes

Your channel come up as a recommend in my feed. Your life mimics a friend of mines. However, she is in a tremendous amount of debt due to her daughter doing some things that she should not have and the Dam office refusing to prosecute. So she must pay all the money. Thank you for sharing about your friend! I hope she’s able to get everything figured out on her path
I think that a mini van would be perfect. The advantages of a car with a little more room to spread out. It also blends in very well without being noticed.
Yes it seems that minivans work great for many people!

Hey...good morning! I like your vlogs!
Hi Elizabeth.. How is living in the car going?
I discovered your channel today and subscribed 🤗❤️.
Thanks for subbing! 😃
Live in my car but it is hard for me. Due to doctor visits I have to stay put. Summer in Florida is tough. My address is Walmart. I’m also getting into a debt management program. I want a place to stay but want to travel also. Good luck to you. You do know Amazon has small battery operated air conditioners that work pretty good for the heat.
Ah I bet Florida is hard!! Best of luck with your situation
@@elizabethoffgrid thank you
Can I ask what area in NM you have land? I have lived in Taos (LOVE it!) and also had initially bought land out by Tres Piedras, but realized it wasn't going to work for me at the time..many years ago. My son and daughter in law are headed to NM soon as they want to build a cob/earthbag type of tiny home and yet hopefully somewhere more temperate. Trying to figure out where that might be! Hope to follow your travels....I'll be joining the ranks likely in the fall....doing the snowbird thing in a van from Eastern Canada down to warmer climes in the U.S.
I’m not going to say exactly but it’s in the high desert east of ABQ. Yep I may also buy land in other places so I can have permanent camping sites good for different seasons
Thank you for this from David in lreland
I think living in a car is the most stealth suv would be too. ❤️
Yes an suv would be great
I’ve had an suv and a car and honestly I prefer the car. It’s the most versatile. SUV was terrible on fuel. I sleep in the front seat and usually in gym or 24 hour store parking lots. It’s easy to blend in.
I remember back in the 70s I had a blue Malibu that I lived in for a while I parked it in front of my friend's mom's house and her address was 252 I remember calling my new address 252 Blue Malibu LOL God I miss those days the seventies were great
Lol that is cute about the address

Hi this is a question that ALL car lifers, Rvers, vehicle lifers need to ask themselves and each other😮 how would the grant pass ruling affect us/them? Because, it does. Involuntarily or voluntarily it's Homelessness
I'd have a hard time not having access to a bathroom and being hot and sweaty
Yeah right now my biggest problem is the heat (especially bc I have hot flashes)
I’ve lived in my car for about a year and a half and honestly I don’t know which is worse, cold or heat. Winter and summer are rough. Autumn and spring are usually pleasant and living in a 2024 Civic Sport is actually not much different than an apartment. It’s just the weather that’s a problem.
Oregon is where 11'×44' tiny home trailers are built called park models starting at $20,000 (2018 prices). I bought the Same tiny trailer books from a bookstore with floorplans.
2018 prices are not relevant on 2023 darlin.
@@joinjen3854 especially since we are not even close to 2028 yet, I agree, they will be higher.
Thanks for sharing about that
Awesome
I have a feeling as time goes on, and things get more expensive, and the housing market gets more out of control, more and more people are going to be doing this. More people are going to live in their cars and vans.
I have a feeling we're just ahead of the curb, now. We seem like we're mentally ill or nuts for doing this, but as times get rougher, the ones who once called us mentally ill might have to resort to this one day.
But it won't matter. Because we'll have saved up enough money to buy our own places, then. Lol.
lol! Yes agree
A car, that would be tough for me. No bathroom isnt an option. A Rv maybe .
Car is easy. I live in my 2024 Honda Civic Sport. Bathroom is 24 hour gym or 24 hour store. It’s easy.
What do you do for safety when you sleep?
Just lock my doors, cover my windows, and be stealth!
Elizabeth, how did you know what land to choose to buy?….in New Mexico? You’ve not seen it yet?❤😊
I just researched online!
@@elizabethoffgrid impressive….☺️🦋
0 you must have a big roof for a $20,000 roof replacement. About 10 years ago I had my old roof totally ripped off and a brand new metal roof installed for a little over $5,000 and got the insurance company to pay for it my homeowners
It was just the top of the construction inflation
I guess I am a bad person because I would file bankruptcy
Ah well there's nothing morally wrong with bankruptcy but it isn't a good fit for my particular situation
my friends declared bankruptcy
Is there any issues with owning a car, paying insurance, registrations, etc, without having an address? I just don’t know.
Yes, that is an issue -- you need a street / permanent address for insurance and registration. I use a family member's address.
The best place to live no money down the drain with rent no million dollars of fixing houses . The best possible life ever travel is more important in life. You only live once
very true
Hello, I just found your channel I'm so done with apartments too expensive. I'm not traveling yet. I'm putting in my 60 days notice. I checked out Intown suits too many 🐝 bugs, Thank you for your information.
Good luck!!
Where in New Mexico? I’m near Albuquerque.
I'm not going to say on the internet exactly but about an hour away up in the high desert
So is my daughter 👍
I've lived in my vehicle several years now, and my home base is Albuquerque. I lived in the Warren Apartments at Gibson and Louisiana in a neighborhood called "The WarZone." I'm currently camping out in my truck at a Walmart in Idaho. I do miss Albuquerque very much, especially the people.
How is it up there now? Last I heard it was getting much more expensive?
I like the area tho. Santa Fe used to be a fun place too. How’s the crime in those areas?
I’ve been looking in several states so far. Seems like crime is rising everywhere now..
How do you register your car or obtain insurance? Without a physical address.
I use a family member’s address as my permanent address
@elizabethoffgrid I rented a mailbox, but I also still use my old address. I never changed anything, lol.
Nothing wrong living in a van... The govt should provide place for this van dweller to sleep so that they dont have to worry to find slepping place daily
There's probably more people doing than ever.
Agreed, especially in how housing costs and everything keep rising
So how do you shower , and what do you use for an address, where do you park, what do you do for employment
Great questions! I’ll be doing videos on those things, but the short answers:
- planet fitness
- family member’s address
- parks, libraries, shopping center lots, side of (quiet) roads (not in front of a house though)
- I have my own business

Awesome thank you!
You can get a electric truck or SUV and pull solar on the roof and cut the cost on fuel.
Electric doesn’t work well for remote places with no charging stations, but a hybrid would be great
Hmm how is the mail working out when you do get mail?!
My regular mail goes to my son’s place (I don’t get much), and I get packages either at my significant other’s house or at an Amazon locker
How does your young adult child fit into your nomadic life? Now that the child support payments have stopped is that the end of your relationship with your child? Maybe a birthday card each year will suffice?
I'm wondering about dating and sex life. When you meet an attractive person do you invite them back to your car for a drink?
My son and I are very close - we speak via FaceTime like 5 days a week, usually for over an hour. As far as dating goes, I’ve been with the same person for 9 years, if we want to hang out we go somewhere together or I go to their house. No one can hang out in my car bc I only have one seat.

Is it living or just exsisting,????
ah a good question for every situation
You can be living or just existing in any situation. Ex: have a nice home, work 5 to 6 days a week to pay for it, watch t.v. every night. Mow the lawn, and clean the house every weekend. That's just existing
What is the coldest temperature any safe heaters ?
I don’t understand your question?
