If I am honest, I think with almost any other vocalist this song would actually sound maudlin and over sentimental. But Ray has such a genuine, compassionate and sincere quality to his singing that I listen to this song and it gets me every time and often it actually makes me cry. Yes, we (by we I mean all of us Kinks fans) know what an absolutely brilliant songwriter Ray Davies is. There is truly none better. But I don't think it gets acknowledged enough just what an incredible vocalist Ray is as well. The humanity in Ray's voice that he brings to all the songs he sings is something very rare and special.
Couldn’t have said it better - I have the same reaction and have loved Ray’s songs forever. Dave’s not so bad himself! But for the greatest performers, it’s that sincerity and authenticity that makes all the difference. Your post made my day. Long live The Kinks!
Absolutely agreed. He's got this sense of realism, a vulnerability, in his voice. Mick Jagger had it in the early Stones years ("Under My Thumb" for instance), but Ray always had it, and never lost it. There is no swagger; he sings like the everyman: snarky and scared, funny and wearily optimistic. The Kinks may very well be the greatest band of all-time. Viva Ray and Dave, and R.I.P. Adam Schlesinger.

One of my all-time favorite songs. I’ll never know why this song wasn’t a worldwide hit. It always brings tears to my eyes and gives me hope for those crummy and not so great days. I know tomorrow we will all find better things.
Somebody should create the greatest film ever made - just they could end the film and roll the credits while this song plays, as we wipe a tear from our eyes.

Great song from a great album. I think Give The People What They Want was the best post-60's Kinks album by far, and this song especially should have been a much bigger hit than it was. It has aged very nicely.

Hard to decide if the end of line 4 is "too" or "to," to make an infinitive enambment with "to / Follow." Probably both when you hear it!

This song has that alternative-sound similar to bands whod come later in the 80s like REM. I bought this album when it came out but I never noticed this until now.

They used this song as the final song to a new comedy on Prime; called Sprung and it was joyful to say the least. What a happy and bouncy tune - it immediately put me in a good mood. Music is a tonic for the soul. Rock on Ray Davies!!
It was Sprung! This song sounded familiar in a movie called "Hard Feelings" and I've been wracking my brain for days now trying to remember where I heard it before. Thank you for jogging my memory. Sprung was excellent.

This is a beautiful song musically and lyrically. I was 13 when this awesome album was released. All the teenagers, born a couple of years after the Kinks first came onto.the scene, had plenty of new, fresh-sounding, great music (along with the "Low Budget" album from just two years before) with which to discover this band for the first time. Also, fans going back to 1965 re-discovered the Kinks from this late-1970s commercial comeback. The British Invasion helped The United States realize what a gem African-Americans had created in rock and roll and England treated the great black American artists with far more respect than they unfortunately got in the States. I also wouldn't be surprised if this musical explosion on both sides of the Atlantic wasn't a factor in spreading the English language all around the world even more than before.

I heard this song just before I graduated in the 80's from Hershey Pa. My whole life ahead of me and the uncertainty of what was to come. I was scared. Now, after a few stints in the military, a few divorces, a few kids, a few careers, losing more than a few family members and friends and a few months into retirement, this song still gets to me. Always hoping tomorrow, I'll find better days (and there always have been and always will be!) What a wonderful ride!!!!!!

I’ve loved this song from the very first time I heard in High School as a Junior or Senior. I always have it in my playlists. Yep 41 years later and Never Ever get tired of it. I just wish there would have been a video of it. The drums percussion was so late 70s early 80s stereotyped and I love it. drummers and thei r 15 minute solos/band breaks. It would be so cool to watch.

Heard this song just before the end credits for the Grown Ups movie, waited till the end to find out the name of the song. Always gives you a positive boost and frame of mind specially during this Covid year which has been the worst year in Himan history with everything that has happened. One of my fave songs by these guys. And the coolest thing of all: my young son, aged 25 years, is into The Kinks today! I didn't introduce him to this fun catchy wonderful music - his eclectic taste and voracious appetite for unique sounds lead him here all on his own.

I found this jewel in a film called "Fita Cassete" (in portuguese, maybe "Cassete Tapes" in english - Netflix). It is the crown of the film and ... sure positive. I took it to my band and instantly we rehearsed ... and recorded also. Good! My actual band, Loupha, began its history singing "You Really Got Me" in 1965 - it was a big shake!

Actually I don't have to go to far back to love this song. It makes me think of summer days in my late twenties and early thirties. It's possible to achieve better things.

I was a weekend DJ on a small family owned AM radio station for several years. Did a saturday/sunday morning 70's music show and I would close every show with this song. They made such good music but I don't think they really got the full recognition they deserved.

Was one of three songs considered for the US Office tv show.
The Bouncing Souls did a really great cover of this. Their punkrock (emphasis on rock!) sound fits the melody perfectly and the singer does a great job capturing the spirit of the wonderful lyrics. This song fits the overall theme of their other stuff, so at first i thought that this was one of their songs but the lyrics seemed too sophisticated for any band after the 1970s so i figured that it must be a cover and i can't say that i was too surprised when i found out who wrote the lyrics/song. I really love that this is a song you can sing to yourself but also to other people who might need it. Great job Mr. Davies!

Wholeheartedly agree! This song maybe more than any other could make me hopeful when things appeared hopeless. It's a fantastic, uplifting song and sentiment if you're going thru the recovery( be it medical or addiction or grief or depression or tragedy or even a virus). This song has always helped lift my spirits and still does.
