    Some added advise to your viewers, have a pair of gloves that have dexterity, and a head lamp on your head for darker conditions, but always try to hook your inner hook the tightest link you can achieve with making sure chains are not uneven, you should in most cases be able to hook the outside cam clasp link on the same number of links remaining, so if got 3 extra links inside , then outside should also have 3 links extra so on and son on, and always use chain tensioners for added tightness. and never spin your tires with chains and proceed slowly don't just mash it starting off.... ** and have zip ties to zip the extra links to the chain so you don't tear up your brake line etc.

    @gamesbok Perhaps you wouldn't even need snow tires either, haha. I prefer to put the chains on before getting stuck. When I observe that conditions are getting to the point of needing them, I put them on, it's much easier than after getting buried. If I get stuck first, then I just have to do it the hard way. Thanks for your comment.

    As someone who uses chains a lot, I'd recommend keeping your tensioners in the cab right up until you need them to make them warmer and easier to put on. Other than that, good video.

    This is a great video, thank you sir. I had to use my chains last Monday and it was rather amazing. I had used them before, but only on one certain hill and never for more than a couple hundred yards. This time I had to use them for some 15 miles straight and it was the only way I made it home. Like I said in a reply below, I did things that SUV's had a great deal of hardship pulling off. My car is a Honda Accord.

    • @wildernessinnovation

      Not bad on the inside, it's just a hook that you put through a link. The outside one helps to tension it all, and then the bungies at the end really do the trick.

    I live in Montana and usually just swap out my summer tires for studded M&S tires. In some conditions where the highway patrol is there, they may want drivers to have chains on or carry chains in order to allow them to proceed, even if their tires are studded or siped. After watching this video, using chains doesn't seem so intimidating. I'm inspired to buy a pair and put them on using this video as a guide. Perhaps I can ditch buying new studs, which are hard on the roads when it's not snowy/icy. Thanks so much for making and uploading this video.

      if I may make a suggestion, check out the SCC Super Z chains. real easy to put on and to remove. check out amazon and they compare prices for you. This by far was the easiest chains I found to put on and I've done it all. 4x4, front wheel drive, link chains, cable chains, I've done it all and these are the best for ease and time to install chains. no re-adjusting and no moving the vehicle.

    • @wildernessinnovation
      @wildernessinnovation  7 років тому +2

      Thank you. There are many types of chains, some are simple light affairs and others are more aggressive. The ones in the video are pretty aggressive. The best thing to do is practice with them in a flat place like a parking lot or even driveway so you become familiar with them before needing to put them on for real.

      you might look into these also www.tirechain.com/emergencychainhd.htm they are much smaller and might work easier. i have a set like the video of cammed v bars but havent ever needed them but its always nice to know if things got bad i can make it. chains will do better on the front drive tires if possible but not every car/truck are made for that, as you can damage break lines if there isnt enough clearance so check ahead of time.
      it snowed a ft in a couple hours this week and i almost put them on, id rather have chains than studded tires but that just depends on what you might have to drive though. with the chains and my truck im not even worried about 2ft of snow if we get a blizzard.

    Thank you for this helpful video. Does one require to put on chains on all 4 tyres or just 2?? In the second case, the front two or the rear two? Please advise.

    • @wildernessinnovation
      @wildernessinnovation  7 років тому +4

      Chains should go on the wheels that have driving power, for rear wheel drive they would go on the rear wheels, on front wheel drive they would go on the front. Usually this is good enough, however on a rear drive sometimes it is nice to have a set on the front wheels for better steering. Of course on all wheel drive, put them on all tires if needed. Thank you for asking

      Check your owners manual. Our 2015 Mazda CX-9 which is all wheel drive states to put them on the front tires only and only if they are the 18" rims not the 20" rims. There isn't enough clearance on the 20" rims and tires.

      4 wheel drive = 4 wheel go...not so much 4 wheel stop or turn. Chains provide extra traction to keep you from sliding in slick conditions. On a front wheel drive or rear wheel drive you typically chain the drive tires. On a four wheel drive I like to chain up the front tires...in extreme conditions you can chain all four.

    If you have trouble getting the chain tensioners to stretch due to the cold, pre-stretch them several times before installing them..what happens is that stretching the rubber warms it, making it easier. While the tensioners are still warm (work fast!), hook them on, and as supertruckerporkchop says, make sure the hooks face OUT to reduce sidewall wear.
    PUT THEM ON JUST BEFORE YOU NEED 'EM!

      Wilderness Innovation I liked your video the chain tensioner is the key to keeping the chains tight I prefer to use two short black rubber bungee cords for the tensioner on my chains installing the 2 tensioners in a X pattern. they are easy to install and fairly cheap to purchase and are readily available at automotive, hardware and other stores. A word of caution when using them check their condition if they show signs of weather cracking dispose of them. they can snap and cause injury. and EYE PROTECTION is recommend this word of caution goes for any rubber tensioner because UV light causes rubber to deteriorate over time

    • @TheNickathome
      @TheNickathome 7 років тому

      I have a set of full chains for my truck that have three cam locks right on the chains themselves that pivot with a provided tool, that really tightens the chains up. With these you really don't need the rubber tensioners, but I bought them as an added safety measure anyway.
      My dad used to call chains "poor man's four wheel drive". He's right too. If I drive my F150 without chains, I maybe can get through two inches of snow until I hit a hill. With the chains, I can drive through 8 inches of snow, and still get home. Even without any weight in the back of the truck. I keep a set of chains in my truck behind the seat, all winter for just in case.

    If you only have one set of chains, usually you'll want to put them on the drive wheels of a 2wd vehicle. However, on a rwd vehicle this means you'll have traction but stopping and especially turning will still be extremely difficult. The car will have the tendency to "push" the front end (or not steer well) which will be even worse if your car has a rear limited slip. You should always practice chaining up someplace clean and dry so you know how to do it in a snowstorm.

  • @supertruckerporkchop
    @supertruckerporkchop 12 років тому

    You should really considering putting the hooks of that rubber tensioner facing out!
    @ 34dibs - You can chain ANY tire out there, providing you have the proper chains.

      That truck is only rear wheel drive so mostly the back is important. It can help the front for steering and braking even so, but most of the time not needed. If you have 4 wheel drive likely you won't need chains. If you do you can do 2 wheels for extra traction or all four for maximum traction. Thanks for asking.

    If the car has rear-wheel drive only, should I put chains on the front wheels to stabilize them? btw you're right about practicing before having to use chains. I had the slip-on chains which didn't make things any easier when I got stuck in Central WA. I had no clue what I was doing. I knew a guy who used to take off his whole wheels before putting the chains on. I wish he could have seen this video hehehe
