  • Winter is around the corner. If you live in a city like me, you don't carry and are not allowed to use snow chains for your tires! Who has room to store a set of snow tires when living in the city? I'm going to share with you a quick and cheap snow chain alternative for when you get stuck in a snow pile.
I've used this technique a couple of times when I just can't get my car out of a snow pile even with shoveling and digging. The technique is to wrap a cord around your tires. I use a clothing hanging cord that's about 3/8th inch in diameter.
Take a look at this video to see how I apply it on my wheels during winter emergency.
The cord must immediately be removed once you are freed from whatever snowy situation you are stuck in! Never drive around with a cord around your tires.

Right over left then left over right is a square knot.
The firsdt knot you did was what they call a granny knot and will come undone easily.

I’m definitely giving this a try, because I hate using snow chains

I’ve used this method on a Peugeot 306 with blue nylon rope but I weaved it around and tensioned it across the front face of the wheel. It worked amazingly well, went straight up a very steep hill which was an ice sheet, but wore out in about a mile on tarmac. It’s only suitable if you have good clearance around the Caliper,if not then it’s going to jam your wheel and break something. I couldn’t use it on my Volvo 850.

I never knew this was a thing. I did this once years ago with spare towels, rags, and shirts in my car on the flats of Galveston bay area in Texas literally saved me. luckily the second I felt my tires slip in the mud , I didn't have traction so I did this before I buried my tires in the mud

Have you tried this in sow or mud yet? It doesn't look safe to me, it would foul on my calipers in no time. I made my own snow chains out of Dog chains & its not too hard and works perfectly, but you do need a welder. The dog doesn't like being turned over & over though.

Guys they make zip ties for this same shit. It won't hit the caliper. Keep in mind though, I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I doubt it. rope will dig out a little bit of snow at a time like a mini-shovel, but it certainly won't dig through ice.

What a joke? Anybody who experienced ice and snow knows this is not going to work.
If you really want to make something temporary that works, use a thicker rope, attach more to the wheels than on this video or even better use any piece of cotton material cut it in to strips and twist it hard before you tie it up on the wheels. The rope used on this video is way too thin
