  • The Island Trail of Walnut Canyon features pueblos that were built over 700 years ago by a group of people known as the Sinagua, which means "without water" in Spanish. There were small communities that farmed gardens of corn, squash, and beans. The cliff dwellings were abandoned in the mid-1200s. After a rail station opened nearby in the 1880s the pueblos were heavily looted and desecrated by people looking for a souvenir. The high amount of theft alarmed locals and resulted in the establishment of
Walnut Canyon National Monument in 1915. This caused the pueblos to be protected by the National Park Service (originally called the National Forest Service)
