Who else thought the title meant Snell and Machado argue with eachother about a rule😂 I though Snell would be pissed about the pitch com thing and Machado was going to come over and be like shut up bro you can't do that shit, and they got into an argument😂
I 100% came here to see an argument with Manny Machado and Blake Snell LOL. wouldn't be Machado's first time at that rodeo as far as a teammate.

This was excellently done.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Pitch comms malfunction constantly because the MLB specifications assumed that there was no radio frequency interference in MLB parks. The comms are constantly overpowered by cell phones and Wi-Fi signals at the ballpark. We tried one in Seattle, once when it wasn’t a game day and it worked fine. Then we tried it during a game and it didn’t work at all. There was so much RFI flying around that at a distance of 30 feet, the two units could not receive each other. We left the field after the game and tried the comm in the parking garage. It worked there. My friends monitor for RF attached to his laptop recorded multiple overlapping RF signals and spillover from different systems. It’s a miracle the devices function at all, ever.
MLB is all hot and bothered to use any new technology without adequately investigating the potential hurdles, pitfalls and pratfalls. Thanks to Mook Manfred, MLB is dead.
I get the whole anti-cheating angle and how good cameras are... especially zoom cameras. But man I do miss the catcher just waggling some fingers for the calls. And I miss Jomboy being able to break the waggling down. "Shaking off" is such an iconic part of baseball and sports lexicon. This is gonna be my "grandpa yells at clouds" issue I die on the hill for... pitch comms sucks for the game of baseball
Yep. Everyone overreacted to the stros and other teams cheating by stealing signs but trying to figure out signs is also a part of baseball. Obv some teams took it too far with the help of tech but just abandoning it wholly was a mistake. This shit sucks ass
@@powertrip6426 If it only takes one guy and a computer to decode a team's sign, decryption is an issue. You would need to invent multiple systems (ring finger means fastball in one, and slider in the other) and then randomize which system is used on the day of the game to counteract the fact that your opponent knows which sign correlates with which pitch. Even then, your opponent has probably figured out the spiel after 10-20 pitches, if they want to. Meaning you really need a whole lot of systems and to change them every inning. Now imagine being the catcher having to remember all these systems.
Otherwise you'd need to institute a ban on teams viewing footage of an ongoing game (which would interfere with replay challenges), but even then they would just look up the game on the next day to steal the signs.
Baseball has changes so drastically in the last few years, it's kinda sad
@@MicahRibbentroppostseason baseball will be more pure
Yeah honestly baseball is so static compared to other spectator sports that taking away any of the visual action, however minor, hurts the game. Plus it just looks cool, like how many movies do a closeup of the catcher throwing signs
Walky Talkies were invented in 1937, yet pitch comms are still malfunctioning as if they're an entirely new and novel concept, can argue it threw off Snell's game tbh
What was the malfunction? 😂
I feel like half of the time pitchers/catchers just say pitch com issue just to buy time and reset. Like you implied, I really can't imagine this many pitch com issues in 2023
Exactly I dont understand how they've had so many comm malfunctions. Like the mlb has how much money and they can't afford good comms? Hell just give them some airpods and have them call each other at the start of the inning on their phone
They arent malfunctioning. They are using it as a way/excuse to subtly throw off the batter. Anything slightly considered as a balk is a "malfunctioning device" etc. No ways they are gonna straight up admit that they balked or not, and use the device as an excuse, even when its not or use it as a way to throw off the batter. In any high level competition, something new brought into the sport, they will analyze every aspect on both sides as an advantage or disadvantage
@@mugshotmarley
Exactamundo.
There’s also no way to prove when a pitcher has locked eyes with the batter, every single time. I’ve seen the pitcher just waiting, the hitter looks right at the mound, then does what happened here, acting like they will argue the pitch away, and don’t even try to hit it. Then they argue that they didn’t meet eyes.
I do t even fully understand every rule around it. Like when can a runner steal a base. If the batter calls time, I’d think they can’t steal, but once they’re in the box, how does a runner know they’ve met eyes, or can they run whenever they want?
The zoom in on the old guy: “hey, are they fighting?” So mild but so funny
The closed captions from the lip reading going behind the player at 3:52 is a nice little touch lol
If only there was a way for the catcher and pitcher to communicate by using secret hand gestures.
If only the Astros and Red Sox didn't violate that tradition by being cheaters.
Eh, shaking off pitches with the pitch clock is more risky now, and it's not like the pitcher can give hand gestures to the catcher.

If "The Battery" is going to communicate their pitch selections using these sort of devices, they should do it BEFORE the pitcher steps onto the rubber.
Good idea but wouldn’t pitch clock be running? So that malfunction would result in a strike
Yeah a lot of pitchers call their own game (at least some of the time) and don't have this issue. They can even step on the rubber, just don't come set...
@@j8van The pitch clock is running regardless of how the "Battery" decides to sequence their signs and pitch delivery. Just do the electronics part before stepping on the rubber so the prospect of committing a balk is removed.

Read the title and I was actually waiting for Snell to come out and start arguing with Machado that he was wrong 😂
Which would make no sense
Kind of weird, I was always taught that once you step in the box, the play is live. Pitchers have been quick-pitching forever. It's part of the game.
You gotta be looking at the pitcher, the pitcher can’t throw when the batters not looking. I mean Machado kinda was but he wasn’t entirely prepared so idk.
The quick pitch rule says only that the pitcher may not pitch while the batter is off balance. There is no mention of the batter looking at the pitcher.
@@MaydayAggro The hitter, however, must also be ready to go in the batter's box. He must be facing and looking at the pitcher with eight seconds left on the clock. If not, he gets charged with a strike. That was from google and it makes sense, no matter what the rules are, a pitcher throwing a pitch at a batter that’s not looking is not fair and shouldn’t count as a pitch.
Bound to happen. New rules, new attempts to take advantage of them.
why dont they have a physical box called the strike zone, that sits in between the batter and catcher? so if it hits or goes outside the box, its a ball. wouldnt that make it so much easier?
@@KiLLJOY1056 not everybody is the same height
Graterol has been a *very* quick pitcher this year. He often gets the pitch off with 8-9 seconds to spare.

In today's episode of: Was That _Really_ A Balk?
A balk requires intent to deceive according to the rulebook.
No balk called in the past 20 years has been a balk per the rulebook, just per the stupid ways MLB umps have “determined” it should be interpreted.
@@MyBiPolarBearMax No it doesn't. There are multiple reasons a balk can be called, including some accidental. Deceptive movement is one type of balk but not the only.
Hahaha I love when the voices are going off at the same time

If only there were some manual method of communication they could resort to as a backup when the pitch coms are having issues. I'm scratching my head as to what they could use though, but could probably count a few ideas on my hands and might be able to put my finger on something.
If only someone would give you a sign, you'd be able to figure it out.
If you do find out, let me know because I could have sworn there was a manual method, too.
If only the mlb would have made an example out of the Asstros, which would deter teams from cheating and we wouldnt have to deal with this bs 🤔 But naw mlb just slapped a bandaid on the problem
Hear me out. What if we give Popsicle sticks to the catchers so that they can use them in case the comms don’t work. So for example, a catcher can relay to the pitcher what kind of pitch to throw by holding them in between his legs so the batter and his team can’t see.
Maybe devise a system like one popsicle stick equals a fastball and 2 popsicle sticks equal some kind of off-speed pitch. I mean I don’t know just throwing things out there guys
With the quick pitch, I think that is something of,give the call to the home plate ump, but the 2nd base ump needs to focus on that as a backup, like 1st and 3rd on a check swing appeal.
Lol very nice. Thanks for the 2 for 1 special 😅
I dont think anyone notices the Padres player walking in front of the subtitles but I caught it. That was really slick editing.
As a Dodgers fan 😂😂
I wish they would just warn them if it was this obvious that he was messing with pitchcom.

The subtitles going behind people that walk past is genius
He doesn't have to "make eye contact" but be ready to hit, and with both feet in the box, and his bat on his shoulders while looking up, machado was 100% ready and was just trying to game the pitcher, and it didn't work out for him so he threw a hissy fit.
Thank you! I was shocked to see jomboy get this one so wrong. The pitcher was clearly still in the set position when Machado looked up anyways, and jomboy had it paused with the pitcher set like wtf? That was bizarre
Please, you have to do Machado destroying a cooler in the dugout with his bat during today's game with the Brewers.
I'd pay to see (laugh at) that.

machado had plenty of time here. if you have another 10 second routine after you step into the box from a timeout it's time to change it.

Thanks, Astros!
Please do a breakdown of game 2 Dodgers vs Red Sox
That had to be one of the worst called games I've seen all year
Yeah, he definitely quick pitched him, but he timed it perfectly because he waited for the exact moment Manny lifted his head up. So even though they didn't make eye contact, it looks like it enough for them to not make the call. As George W. Bush would have said, that was some good "Strategery".
Strategery, seen it a Brazilian times 😂
Yeah Manny was expecting him to keep his hands far apart until they made eye contact, then go into the set. So he was surprised when he looked up and saw Brusdar was almost in the set position. He just was able to quickly get set and pitch. But the rule is he can pitch anytime after they make eye contact if the batter has both feet in the box in the hitting position.
@@jefflewis4 They cant come set until the batter is ready. He was in the set position when Manny looked up. Should definitely not been allowed.
@@Fly-The-WI feel like pitcher didn't come out of set early. It looks like he gets eye contact and then he sets him self. He pauses long enough to not balk imo and I think its legit. Unless the rule is the pitcher has to bet set the entire time, which I imagine isn't the case. I feel like people are saying him placing the ball was coming out of set. This looks like actually going into set. Tbf I don't really know what this pitchers normal rhythm is, but it looked legit to me.
@@sluggy1 he started coming set before Machado was ready. With the clock rules you can't do that. It's to prevent pitchers from being set and waiting before the batter is ready and immediately pitching when they look up. As jimmy pointed out, the pitcher starts coming set before Machado even looks up. It's not legal
Ok, so the slowmo only shows the arm. In the full shot, looks like many makes eye contact at the same time pitcher moves his leg. I think many got confused because the pitcher's arm does come up before the eye contact. It really depends on if the arm coming up counts as getting in the set position. If yes, many is in the right, but I'm not sure what the rules say.
Bruh they need to figure this shit out
Manny was yelling before the pitcher even came to a full set. If he kept his hands on the bat and kept his concentration he had plenty of time to swing at the pitch.
Did anyone help that man by letting him know that they were, in fact, fighting?
I had no idea they have buttons for signals now... i have not watched baseball in a while.
Wow, those cleats on that batter look like something straight out of a video game 0:10.
Jimmy is wrong here, at 4:41 pause it and you'll see definite eye contact. Now focus on the pitcher and press play, and you'll see his hand go into the glove, a pause, then the pitch. The "pause" is the point he came "set" and this was after the point WE paused the video, so unless there were some time travelling shenanigans going on the facts trump opinion and it was a good pitch and the correct call by the ump.

"Bruh" and "bro" automatically make me like a person less. "Bruh" especially.
It's crazy how quickly and outright blindly umpires are to jump to the defense of their own missed calls. Like he realizes that what Blake says is valid then calls him a liar because Blake said he promised that's what happened. Honestly embarrassing for that man
Jomboy breakdowns feed my soul
Kiind of interesting to hear Jomboy say he dislikes pitch-com, when, as far as I can tell, his investigation into the Astros sign-stealing scandal is a big reason the League would say that pitch-com is necessary. It makes it that much more difficult for sign stealing to happen. Granted, everytime a new system is introduced, someone is trying to hack it!!
Why do they change the rules every season I don't even know what is going on anymore.
100% a balk. Before pitchcom, a pitcher didn't begin a windup until the catcher knew what was coming. And if the catcher wasn't clear, he called time. A pitcher can't go into the stretch, then reach back for pitchcom. That's just a balk in the same way it would have been pre-pitchcom.
Balk requires intent to deceive as stated in the rulebook. No balk in the last 20 years has been a real balk, just an umpire's interpretation.
Man, technology sure makes all our lives so much easier!
@@saulspeaks2557for real. Like there are places it’s needed to help but this does not seem like the place we need it
Balk call is really based on opinion nowadays more than anything else, but if the catcher didn't get the call, someone needs to step out
I'm no MLB player, but couldn't Manny just ignore the quick set and be ready for the pitch anyway? Trying to alert the ump seemed to throw Manny off more than if he just focused on hitting the pitch.
He definitely could have, but he'd much rather complain.
MLB wants to change the rules the umps need to stick to the new rules..there was no eye contact before the pitcher went.. this back and forth crap is nonsense
New rules suck takes away the gamesmanship
Let's just have a machine for the ump , the strike zine always be the same , we can have computer 🖥 for the managers that access risk and audio the decision through a speaker , heck let's play robots , why risk getting hurt .

"Cmon bro!"
"Yeah bro"
I find it funny how Gary Sánchez is the catcher here, cus I remember watching him a few years ago try some stuff to hide the signs, and even the pitcher didn’t know what signs he was using
It's not a pitch com issue. It's the pitcher not knowing the rules or understanding what a balk is.
Manny could've been set if he didn't stop and point
cant say that when the pitcher was already in his motion.
@gotlumpia was he really in his motion though? Like to me it seems like it could be argued that he just brought the ball to his glove and waited, then when Machado looked up and made eye contact he started to throw, but then Machado started pointing. That's how it looked to me anyway but I also wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong

I agree that Graterol started his movement maybe a split second too early....but he had a pretty obvious set when he put his hands together and a rather long pause before throwing the pitch. So long that Manny had enough time to complain to the UMP and move his feet around. Maybe if he wasn't chewing a Big Chew like Ace Ventura and actually focusing on the pitcher, he would have been able to swing at that meatball cutter
He was in the box with both hands on the bat and drawn back, he's ready.

Manny may have been trying to get the pitcher to come set early and violate the "Max Scherzer" but to try and trick the pitcher into coming set early is against the rules.
🤣🤣🤣🤣no one is trying to trick anyone. You are out of your mind.
From watching the video a couple times, Machado has no argument. After the timeout, in his stance in the batter's box, he eventually looks at the pitcher. It's at least a full second later before the pitcher winds up to throw.
I can watch him cry all night😂
