The fact that Hoberg is 100% in the right is hilarious
I mean the first call of this video was wrong, but other than that.
@@jraymond1988the first pitch? The one that Jimmy was using as a baseline?
That one lit up as a strike, so that actually was correct. The second one may have been a bit high, so if any pitch was a miss, is was probably the second one
@@jraymond1988 according to umpscorecards all of these pitces were called right
@@jraymond1988 It was literally a strike on the TV graphic. If the circle is filled in it's a strike, if it's hollow it's a ball. The box just isn't perfect so sometimes they don't match up on close pitches.
@@jraymond1988tv graphic is not always right. Baseball savant data would show you that for many games
I respect Hoberg for immediately owning up to his mistake of calling the runner out. Too many umps wouldn’t do that
Angel would spray paint the cameras so no one would be able to see the bases weren’t loaded.
100% the umps need to put the ego away. You will be the most famous umpire ever if you just focus on getting the correct call no matter what
Hoberg is genuinely one of the best umps in the game rn
@@itsyaboi1245young and confident. Def need more of that.
exactly right
The best part is every call being argued was the correct call 💀
Nope
i mean i don’t think you or I would do better telling if it’s a ball or a strike from the dugout, but it’s definitely ironic with the gift of hindsight
@@adamz6633if he can’t tell then why the hell is he complaining 🤣
@@JayD73 because it’s a competitive sport and when people are losing in competition people get upset, as simple as that
Managers are too used to the garbage umps all season. It's habitual to complain.
It's so refreshing to have a breakdown where the Umpire for once is absolutely 100% correct.
that's Hoberg for ya. surprised to see so many here who do not know of the goat. when he's behind the plate u better bet that line will stay consistent. makes it easy for SP to get off to a good start. edit - we need MLB to create an Umpire Hall of Fame just for Hoberg LOL - it would actually be pretty dope to have a HOF for the umps and HOF for refs in other sports would be funny and sorta cool lol. imagine the memesssssssssssssssssss
It's pretty darn rare. But very much appreciated
And the fact that it's against the Yankees mortal enemy has nothing to do with this. 🙂
Not 100%. I don't care if he was consistent. That pitch to turner was off the plate, a clear ball. In an important point in the game.
@@ericg4915Sure, it was off the plate when it was received in the catchers mitt. Unfortunately, that’s not what counts for a strike.
pat had a perfect game in the world series no slander against him
Domingo German threw a PG…
@@Gabe-zm9vh diffeeence is pat is consistently good
You can critique a performance without critiquing the player. Same goes for umps, they’re playing a game too, just from a different perspective with different objectives.
He’s a great Ump, but those pitches were outside. Consistency is key IMO, but there’s still grounds to be upset about those pitches. Like, as a player you use your eye and spot the ball incredibly well, and then still get struck out, that sucks.
@@carlsmith4568that's why they teach you wheb you're like 7 if it's close you better swing. Forgetting basic fundamentals the pros do
@@carlsmith4568 Technically, those pitches he called strikes, touched the corner which by the major league definition, is a strike. What is really impressive is how accurate he is to that level of fine measurement on what he deems a strike and what he does not, AND how consistent his zone is within his parameters.
holy crap, an umpire that admits he made a bad a call and fixes it.... huge respect.
Hoberg is great. The man should be cloned
All umpires would admit it in that situation
@@Dtownpunk77 How many times have you seen a play where an umpire makes the wrong call because he thought it was a force out instead of a tag play? I bet never. And if you have I bet the umpire reversed
@@catman-du8927 wait, is this angel hernandez? Are you angel hernandez? You sound like him...
@@Dtownpunk77 So the answer is that you have never seen this before. If you've never seen a call like this before then why do you assume umpires wouldn't always correct their call?
In summary: Pat Hoberg is really good at his job and Alex Cora can stfu.
I mean I'd be pissed too at the first call to Turner, but the ump was consistent at least.
@@jraymond1988 huh? computer say it was a strike, you gonna argument with the computer too?
Pretty sure it is the same game that Verlander told Cora to fuck off
Sounds like you have a personal prob with Cora lol.
As a sox fan I think it might help if we get actual pitchers. The ump was consistent all game
Pat Hoberg is one of the only umps that I'll give the benefit of the doubt when calling balls and strikes.
If he's ever wrong then it wasn't possible to be right.
Hoberg admitting he blew the call on the play at the plate and making sure they got it right is the most refreshing thing I’ve seen in a while.
Pat Hoburg is the only Umpire's name I know who isn't awful at calling balls and strikes.
Pat Hoberg is BY far the best. The only umpires that are consistently good according to umpire scorecards is Pat, Jeremy Rehjak, and John Tumpane. (John Libka used to be in this group, he hasn’t been as good recently)
The younger generation of umps are pretty good.
@@kmart2169 I thought Libka had a concussion & was recovering. Maybe I'm mistaking him for a different umpire
Another one you should keep an eye out for is John Libka, he’s also really good
we would have less complaints about bad calls if he umped every game. Or just the games I bet on LOL
Anyone who decides to argue with Hoberg should know that they are fighting a losing battle. The man is THE MAN! Love this guy. Clone him, make him ump every game ever. Set the gold standard here.
They don't call him perfect Pat for nothing.
This was an eye-opener for me. I had no IDEA there was a competent plate umpire. These were stellar calls.
All the new umps are pretty good at calling balls and strikes. Pat Hoberg had a perfect balls & strikes game in the world series too.
I remember there being an ump that's actually slightly better than Hoberg. Maybe John Libka?
There's a graphic of the best umpires somewhere in Foolish Baseball's video on bad umpiring
@@carson5066he used to be up there, but lately hasnt been doing as good as he used to
@@ryandgav1361 Libka or Hoberg?
Hoberg had a “perfect game” in the World Series. Not a single missed call.
Cora saying "I don't care" about the call well in the middle of an argument about the call that he ran out there to start is gold, what a clown.
"I literally don't fucking care."
Then why are you out there arguing? Go home, Alex.
He wasn't much better on his after game interview, too.
I mean he's a Boston manager they're bunch of babies...
Agreed.
Cheater Cora along with the Altuve and the buzzer. Never forget.
How can you hate hobergs strike zone 😂?!
You can hate the zone, but you can't hate the consistency. He at least called the same zone consistently, which is about all you can ask when human error is a thing. He established his zone, and stuck with it. The Red Sox just got frustrated on pitches that were outside of that established zone.
Too tight. A hitters ump for sure.
@@rushmanandtucker762 I don't know, having to protect that far outside the zone isn't fun for the hitters either.
@@LucianDevine A hitters ump is an umpire that has a tight zone. A pitchers ump is an umpire that has a wide zone like in little league.
@@rushmanandtucker762 Ah, gotcha, sorry.
Pat is the only umpire I know by name because of how GOOD he is. Cora taking a huge L here
Wow Hoberg is really good and I love how you proved it
Do we have video of Cora with the lineup card the next game?
Hoberg would be the third base umpire for the next game, not behind the plate. The plate ump gets the line-up card. Maybe the other umps are standing by. It's been a long time since I was physically present at a game, so it's hard to remember.
@@mikeprevost8650 All 4 umps are present at the pregame meeting. I wish Jomboy had his lipreading skills to see that video, but Im sure Cora being the Karen that he is didnt say a word
@@mptr1783 He didn't say anything except "You were right Pat". Bringing up a pitch from the night before at the next plate meeting is a good way to end your day before it even began.
Wait, he had a consistent strike zone AND admitted when he made a mistake and corrected it in the moment? Maybe we don’t need robo umps just yet
We just have to clone this umpire.
If every ump was as good as Hoberg, there would be no issue.
But, not every ump is as good as Hoberg. Very few are. And a significant number are pretty terrible, actually.
The funniest part about this is that Pat Hoberg has consistently been one of the best umpires in the game for several years, and is one of the most well liked by the players too
I can't believe how good Hoberg's zone is.
Way to fire up the guys with fake anger, Cora, really worked out well. Oscar nominations can't be far behind.
This is one of my favorite breakdowns. A good umpire gets recognized? If an umpire makes the right call nobody does breakdowns. Shout out to the umpire and to jomboy for making it
I freaking LOVE these breakdowns and the layovers you do. I would have bet money those were the same exact pitches. That's some amazingly high level officiating.
This feels like watching an Audit the Audit where Hoberg is the cops and Alex Cora is yelling that he’s a sovereign citizen and he wasn’t driving a car, but *traveling*. Very bizarre feeling to be like “yeah this ump rules”
"This stadium is under maritime law!"
This umpire gets an A+
Mr. Cora, gets an F, for being willfully incorrect, unprofessional, and for starting an argument that didn't need to occur.
@@Extem1 Mr. Hoberg gets an A+, although there is room for debate as to whether or not it was a strike, he called it consistently throughout the game and never deviated. He also acted with extreme professionalism and when faced with making an honest mistake owned up to it and reversed his decision instead of letting his ego win the fight. I commend Mr. Hoberg not only for his consistency but for the professional and calm demeanor in which he conducted himself, I can only hope more umpires will follow the example he has set.
Maybe he needs an encounter with an Officer P. Barnes. 😀 I don't comprehend how someone can live being such a giant manbaby, throwing tantrums over tiny stuff in their work.
Him admitting he made the wrong call and then changing it just made him my favorite umpire/referee.
2:55 bro's voiceover is pure gold, never gets old
Exceptionally consistent with his zone. He called paint pitches, and anything outside of that was a ball. Now it may literally be a difference of the width of the ball, but he called them a ball, as they were outside the zone.
Red Sox fan here. Based on the calls you showed, Ump had a great game. Loved the accountability on that out call also. Alex is just wrong here. Go Sox. Love your video as always...
Sox fan too. Great calls
i didn't understand his stance, he's upset at the dude who is arguably one of the best in the sport. Cora should be mad at himself or his players for having a weak gameplan against a solid team.
I wanted to double check the scorecard just to see how he did, per usual mid-high 90s percentage on accuracy and funnily enough, despite losing, the scorecard has the redsox benefiting by + .6 runs due to his calls.
@@mmmodafoca cora's stance is probably, 'you called the outside edge a strike on us, you should call it a strike on them.' not realizing, of course, that he actually does do that (0:45) and the pitch he is complaining about is a bit further out than JT's. (also a sox fan)
Turner struck out earlier in the game with runners in scoring position and 3-2 count on a verlander curve. Wasn’t a bad call ball was just a bit outside. Turner just got unlucky twice
I get why he thought the bases were loaded, it would make that throw home make a lot more sense
Love this ump. He’s human, he’s not perfect, but he’s objectively awesome
Always love to see high quality officiating getting recognized and put in the spotlight for a change!
Angel Hernandez saw Jomboy was calling out another ump and was so excited then watched the video.
He’s a great ump and yea he is getting those calls right. It’s touching which means when the ball passes through the zone it’s probably more over the plate. The balls he called were atleast a ball length or more inside or outside
i even like how hoberg reacted to being yelled at, the man knew he was right and he didnt get angry
Maybe wasn’t the most well-calibrated strike zone, by the by, but the consistency should be respected. The ump established a firm edge and was able to stick to it even on tight calls. If this was the standard for all umps, I think you’d hear less talk of robot umps. Especially given the documented struggles a lot of umps have had just this season.
Also, excellent breakdown by JBM as always. Frankly, MLB would be smart to use these types of videos (or at least editing methods) as reference points in umpire training
well calibrated? if you're talking about the "high" strike call, the tv strike zone was the shitty one there. the tv strike zones are not good, you cant rely on them.
Finally, a positive video about an umpire who is actually doing a good job. We need coaches to realize that some umpires are actually very talented at what they do. Hoberg is definitely one of them.
an umpire that has the ability to say "oop i messed up we gotta change that right away"? amazing, love this guy
Pat Hoberg is one of the best ball/strike umpires in MLB right now. Him and John Tumpane are phenomenal behind the plate.
I need more of these breakdowns defending umps. You did one a while back with a dude who only missed 2 calls the whole game and it was awesome. Some of these young bucks are damn good at their jobs and should be recognized.
one of the few umps I have respect for. Good and honest at his job
It's great to see a video where an umpire is actually getting credit for doing a good job. I'd love to see Jomboy at some point do a video about how the strike zone shown on broadcast is often not accurate compated to the pitchfx data, etc.. Similar to the breakdowns by closecallsports.
broadcast zones suck, and sometimes you get a bunch of tv umps up in arms because of it
I wish they didn't show the strikezone box on tv.
I need the breakdown to include Cora giving the lineup the next day
“I should be treated with respect just like all of your dogs” was a hell of a segue 😂
Good on you Jomboy. Gotta stand up for the umps when they do the job right.
Jomboy's ad transitions are always smooth, but that dog food transition was one of his finest.
Gees Jomboy! You're not supposed to have us siding with the Umps on these breakdowns! 😜😜😜😜
"With only one out, pretty big pitch
Called strike 3 to end the inning"
I'm so ecstatic baseball content like this exists.
I really appreciate the Jomboy goes way out of his way to show good umping when it’s there.
So refreshing to see good umpires and people appreciating them.
Cora must feel pretty damn stupid looking back at it lmao he was very clearly in the wrong there
I want to be Pat Hoberg when I'm older tbh.
Imagine being good at being an umpire. It's like seeing a unicorn
I hope Cora watches this breakdown to see how silly he was being about the strike zone.
The transition from breakdown to advertisement was so good I wanted to give it a doggy treat.
Man, not often you see an ump call himself out for a mistake, I respect that.
It happens more often than you think. But those don't get covered, while the opposite situation gets blasted all over youtube.
We need Hoberg to call every MLB game from now on.
Wow, an ejection breakdown where the ump isn't in the wrong. Pat truly is a miracle.
Love that you highlight and breakdown an example of great umpiring and game management.
GOAT break down, this is why I love this channel. It is 100% responsible for me getting into baseball.
This is an umpire that we need to clone. He's so consistent. He doesn't try and make himself bigger than the game.
I hope Cora is a man of his word and he come back to apologize to the ump after he watches the film from the game.
Jomboy is one of the only UA-camrs who can consistently integrate an advertisement into his video and *not* piss me off. Too bad I don't have a dog, because I would totally be buying dog food right now.
One of my favorite things about these videos is when Jomboy reads lips, makes my day with the voice overs!
Glad to see that he kept a consistent strike zone even if the pitches that were called strikes were looking to be off the plate. It is also refreshing to see an umpire reverse a call before needing to go to a replay to have it overturned.
An umpire that isnt afraid to admit he made a mistake and owns it 🤯
Good on you, highlighting the good umpiring.
Holy crap, an Ump who knows what he's doing. It's not about where the strikezone is on the TV, it's about consistency. If you give the outside all day, call it all day. Not inning to inning.
Surprised you didn’t do a separate breakdown on Justin Verlander telling Alex Cora to stfu lol
Can we get a baseball card of this umpire? He’s my new favorite thing to watch in MLB
The ad at the end kills me with the zoom in Hoberg’s face 😂
I love this. We as a community trash the MLB umps a lot. And they deserve a lot of heat for it. But this is good to see. Thanks JB for highlighting this!
Angel Hernandez is spinning in his grave after watching this 😂😂
We need to see a mic'd up lineup discussion at the next game.
Looks like Houston adjusted to Pats zone and Boston just complained about it. If an ump is consistent and it isn’t egregious, you have to adjust.
That’s one of the idiosyncrasies I love about Baseball.
Love the video, can’t wait to see you break down the llws championship game wild game
One of the rare times the Ump is 100% correct lol. Now let's see that hilarious Contreras ejection from the other day.
Somehow someone for the red Sox needs to get this to Cora for pregame 😂
I'm glad to see Alex Cora apologize to Hoberg before the next game and then admit to being wrong about the ball/strike calls to the press. Yeah right, Cora seems like he would never own up to a mistake like the ump did on that out call at home. Much respect for that ump
would like to see that lineup exchange the next day
Anyone else notice that the TV zone box is REALLY tiny?
Pat is statistically the best umpire in the league. Just goes to show you coaches like to argue for any reason.
I’m a Red Sox fan - the pitch to Turner was a ball for sure, but Pat had been calling that all night. In as big of a spot, he could’ve and arguably should’ve swung, but then again, JT has a great sense of the strike zone, so it’s hard to get mad at him as a fan.
Moreover, the pitch when Cora got tossed, also a ball, but Wong did a great job framing. When the balls are side by side, the frames look to be equal, which I think upset Cora, and AC needed to rally the troops, so I get it. Big series, high tension. I can see Cora’s anger, even though he was in the wrong here, but it’s the job of the manager to stand up for their players, right or wrong!
Great breakdown as always, Jomboy!
That transition to the ad was almost flawless lol
Another W for Wat Woberg
Those pitches are so far outside lmao
So good, Best Baseball Analysis, Period.
I needed the home o plate meeting The next day after Cora saw those calls
Pat is the best ump
The first time I've seen the ump get the calls correct on a JomBoy video
Might just be the best ump/ref in any sport, consistent and honest
Hoberg ending up with this being a perfectly called game must have made that conversation with Cora the next day extra good
The last 2 pitches were more outside. I’m with ump for once
Hoberg's right-left strike zone is certainly a tad wide, but consistent. My favorite part is that he remains totally calm the entire time.
Sunday funday breakdowns are the best
Did Cora take the line up card out next game? I bet Hoberg was waiting with a seriously sly grin on his face like a BOSS
That was way off the plate, cora was mad for no reason smh
Yeah Cora was in the wrong here and Pat is the goat but interesting that jomboy, a yankees fan, has been dishing out more videos lately that paint the red sox like a bad team (they are), when the yankees have been the worst since the 90s. I'm waiting on those yankees videos to come out
You noticed that too? Every time a video comes out with the Red Sox in it he’s making them look bad.
You are so good at this.
omg. the farmer's dog advert. I thought you were treating a really good ump like a dog. ya got me good there, jomboy! 😅
