Tom Petty lived in Florida. Northern Florida is the deep South. Central and South Florida are very distinct regions from Northern part and the Southern states. But yes he had a slow pace of living rock songs. It was unique for sure. Also he was part of The Traveling Wilburys. With other legends we lost, like Roy Orbison and George Harrison. They were top of the charts in the 80s and 90s. Trust someone from Gen X who was a teen in the 90s. Great groove to those songs you can enjoy. Long summer drives, in a convertible, top down. Cold beveage and Tom Pertty blasting on the speakers. My idea of heaven I admit. Maybe in the mountauns. Clear skies, blue water, trees and peaks all around.

OH MY MY! OH HELL YES!
In my final years of high school, we used to sing this song a whole hell of a lot. It was a big deal.
My favorite Tom Petty song ever, though, is Refugee. He has a bajillion hits, though, you could go down this rabbit hole for quite a while.
It really broke my heart when I was at the Stevie Nicks concert recently and she played Free Fallin' for him, and cried, and talked about her friendship with him. Her collab with him, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, is pretty fucking fantastic as well.

I think an explanation of why Tom was so big is the combination of being a cool, driven guy, partnering with quality musicians and producing consistent good, if not "epic" music. This, and the fact that they toured and delivered this quality whenever they performed, which was constant in the late '70's and '80's. Bottom line was that they had a catalog of songs people were attracted to and they gave people their money's worth live. Do that for 40 years and you can be there, too!!!

I'm a big time metalhead and just music enthusiast in general, but Tom Petty has always held a super special place in my heart. He was the first musician I wanted to be like, actually first celebrity I ever idolized. He is such an amazing artist. The thing about him (and the band) are they are just such a solid band, and just as good live as in the studio, but also amazing songwriting, Tom Petty literally has countless hit songs, and all of his songs are good in a different way. He has even written songs that other people recorded and play that you would probably be mind blown to know he wrote it.

Music changed SO MUCH over the course of Tom Petty's career, from the 70s to 2017, but Tom was always Tom, and he was fantastic in a kind of zen southern way. And I'd put the Heartbreakers up against any other backing band in rock history.

Ok, first thing, kudos to mom. Make that list! Now you’re obligated!
Tom Petty was one of my most favorites. Always original and so very talented. He passed way too young.
RIP you super rock and roller.

I think Tom Petty songs were the soundtrack for many people's coming of age. I grew up on 70s Petty, and his songs like "Even the Losers" or "Here comes my Girl" tells the story that many people lived.

You get any further into his catalog check out won’t back down that the university of Florida fans do between the 3rd and 4th quarters. It’s kinda cool watching 85k+ sing it. They picked that song to honor Tom after his death

Tom Petty is straight up rock. Anything that smacks it country is accident.
    And yes, harmonica is amazing.

One of my favourite T.Petty songs. He's awesome (don't listen to your mom. Well, okay listen to her all the time, but maybe not on this specific topic ;-) The harmonica is perfect for the feel of this song; You should def check out 'You don't know how it feels' for more country vibe and harmonica, and then 'Don't Come Around Here No More' for more freakishness in the official video - plus it's a weird cool song.

My absolute favorite Tom Petty song is Learning to Fly, which oddly enough is the name of my favorite Pink Floyd song (nothing in common, except maybe being about drugs lol). Besides that
    Into the Great Wide Open
    Runnin down a Dream
    I Won't Back Down

Different bands do different things well that lead to popularity. I think Tom Petty is exceptional at crafting songs that your pre alcoholic aunt can mumble the lyrics and bob her head to.
