Here's Tom Petty's comment the day after Garry died: "I’ve known Garry for a long time. We go back to the mid-80’s. I just want people to remember what great work he gave us. The Larry Sanders Show just stands as some of the best TV work ever done. He was always quiet about his talent and just a really decent guy.
We had a very strong friendship. We kept in touch all that time. You know, he’d come to our shows, and he’d hang out with us. I went to his house many times and he would come to my house. It was a comfortable friendship where if he came over I didn’t feel like I had to entertain him, and it was the same way back. He had an incredibly original talent, and as a man I can’t say enough about him.
He was more than a showbiz acquaintance to me, he was a dear friend, and I will miss him."

They were great friends. And I feel honored they shared it with us. If only we could have friendships this great. I wish they had kept rolling. Garry was getting teary eyed, and that is part of all friendships.
RIP to these two greats. Both departed at age 65. Both creative geniuses, ...still producing up until the end.

So hard for TP to be that candid -- I'm jewish and suddenly dropping in on friends when you know your time is limited -- I understand the prison of celebrity but I would do that. Funny reflective deeply painful to watch; I take a stand on breach of boundaries but it's ok to watch this and not rent the Bogdanovitch official bio video -- makes zero sense.

The great friendship between the two was great, I just watched Gary with Jerry Seinfeld and those two were really funny together.
But I DO MISS BOTH OF THESE GREAT TALENTS MORE THAN ANYONE COULD KNOW.
I felt SO BAD when both of them left us. All we can do is listen to you heir Music and all the great music legacy left to us, and watch all the great comedy by a genius unique comedian. Fortunately there is a sizable amount from both of these greatly missed talents!
      R.I.P. Gary Shandling and
      R.I.P. Tom Petty!

Bad faery at the party. I don't know what happened that day but Dana was hiding in the bedroom and Tom was the ultimate introvert it felt like a huge intrusion watching this. If it's real, Gary Schandling must have told him he was dying or something. This video should be removed but of course won't be because of the lack of boundaries on the part of fans who have now been termed as engaging in what is now officially parasocial relationships with people they will never meet often and now permanently dead. Were I Dana I would hide in the bedroom as well. !st time Warren Zane Tom's biographer met him outside his house he was in camo hiding in the bushes outside the restaurant. You people are clueless.

I have watched several interviews of Tom Petty, some real good ones. But this chat with his pal Gary Shandling is the best thing I have found of Tom speaking. It's so real and interesting. Just Tom being Tom, at home with a friend. I've watched it about 7 times now. Soon to be 8.

Tom is right about tubes. I have had a tube pre-amp for the last 20 years. When I was auditioning equipment in an audio store, I heard 2 or 3 solid state pre-amps and then when the guy hooked up the tube pre-amp, the difference in the warmth of the sound was immediately apparent.

I was 17 when Damn the Torpedoes came out and Tom Petty's music really was the soundtrack to the best years of my life. I was lucky to have seen him at an outdoor show at Greatwoods in Massachusetts when the Black Crows were the opening act. That was easily the best concert I've ever seen. Then I saw him again in Hartford with Steve Winwood. I wish like hell I'd seen him 10 more times. I haven't changed my Sirius radio from the Tom Petty station since he passed. What a loss to the music world. Him and Malcom Young. Two of the best musicians ever.

I have never seen this before, or even knew about Garry's interviewing show. Or whatever this is. But... WOW. This is amazing. I was a kid when I accidentally discovered the Garry Shandling show and the quirky humor. I was bummed when it ended, and didn't like the Sanders show as much but I didn't know anyone else who was into his humor as much as I was. I was also raised on LOTS of Tom Petty from my dad. So seeing this... Wow. what an awesome and hilarious pairing.

This is so interesting. The conversation they were having, Garry saying that we should tell people we love them as you never know, and Tom telling the story of how Garry stood looking out over the landscape and said 'It's the end of the world.' These kind of topics, philosophical questions, are usually discussed when you're at the end of your life, when you know you are ill. I didn't know much, if anything, about Garry Shandling, but I believe he sadly died not that long after this. It's as if somewhere in our subconscious, we 'know' we're at that point. He seemed a lovely guy. I'm glad they filmed this, I'm sure Tom will treasure it.

Gary Shandling lived almost another 20 years after this was recorded, so I doubt he was anticipating his demise any more than anyone does throughout their life. If you listen to the context and the way it was said, it wasn't a reference to one's death anyway. "Said as an observer, from the outside."

    • @beverlyhayshouston2770
      @beverlyhayshouston2770 7 років тому +4

This was filmed in 2006 (released in 2007) and Shandling died in 2016. He had another 10 years to go and Petty had 11 1/2 years to go. I hope they loved their last decade.

@@globalmonkey007 Thank you for that. I was curious as to how soon they each passed after this was recorded. Garry looks so hale and hearty here, while Tom looks washed out. Tom still smoked, which probably contributed to his funereal pallor.
I couldn't tell what Garry was drinking. Perhaps club soda? If it was a sugared drink, then it wasn't good for him.

I was at work and heard Change on the radio then the DJ in Cleveland said about Tom's passing. In the last 22 months I have lost two of my favorite musicians Tom and David Bowie. I was dumbfounded when Gary passed. I have a dry dark sense of humor and since the mid 80s Gary has been one of my favorite comedians.
I was 14 when i first heard Tom play his music and have been following him ever since. Every stage of my life there has been a Tom Petty song somewhere in the mix. I have covered some of his songs on my guitar and drums. Even my son when he was around 2 i heard him singing some of Toms songs.
He is united with George and Roy and can sing high up there.

Tonight is the first time I have seen this video. Ironically today I chose to quit smoking...again. I'm 63 and in great shape (I thought). When Tom died at 66 from a heart attack I decided to see the doctor to have my blood pressure checked the other day. It was always low, 110 to 120. The other day it was 145 this was due to picking up smoking again. It was a year ago that I restarted. Now I'm Jonesing, but I'm done with cigs. Tom died from smoking like a chimney, the same with Bowie. If you don't smoke, please never try it. It absolutely sucks and it's one of the most addictive drugs on earth. I'll be okay in 3 days when the nicotine is out of my system. But the habit will take longer to diminish. Miss you Tom Petty!
