This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Sorry about that.

Totally agree with the final comment, showing the not so great Morphy games from the saga also really makes us understand that no one is perfect and everyone loses sometimes. Nice video and loving the saga, thank you Antonio!
Ryan Flanagan you are hypocrites ignorant you never read the bible if you do read the bible you never say what you said I’m ready to challenge you I’m Jesus great grandson and I believe Jesus great prophet but God more greater and Jesus whiteout God nothing as everyone else Only one God I advice you to read the bible
Was going to say this, well put sir! Besides the satisfying aspect of seeing legends be human, it'd be quite boring to only see victories - this game for example had great tension.

Wait how do you actually find all of these?
That 12:47 agadmator rap is 🔥.
"Simple yet complicated" :)
That moment your oppenent offers a draw and after you decline you just lose the game...
been there, done that
I had one where the opponent offered a draw i declined and then offered a draw when he was winning and he accepted the draw.
Were you watching my last game last night?
A tale as old as time...
😂 you want to cry after.
Agads confidence in the idea that we all frequent libraries regularily is cute.
I actually work in a library!
Its more of a disclaimer, "your friends at the library [wink, wink] and the bar"
The idea that I ever leave the house is cute
Lmao what about his idea that we all frequent bars
I recommend playing chess at cafes. I've met some cool people that way. Some cafes even have a chess board available for customers.
It was a mouse slip by Morphy, it happens to the best of us.
mouse wasn't invented back then...
@@pokemonjynx1019 of course they were, alongside rats, pigeons, and other rodents.
I told this to my friends at the bar and library. *It was a very high quality conversation* . Thank you agadmator.
"Sorry about that" remains one of life's greatest mysteries
not really, he just fixes the computers volume
He fixes the volume because the volume he uses for chess when playing is louder than for videos.

whenever morphy loses, agad should take away the morphy head from morphy cause he wouldn't deserve it
That's just brutal 😂😂
As someone who's been trying to get more into chess these days - I find the basic principles about the pawn and king endgames to be fascinating. I'm one of those players where when I reach the king and pawn endgame I just kind of push stuff and hope for the best lol. Gotta keep studying it seems. Thanks!
I wish Morphy have 2000 games to show. Just love him.
He has more than 2000+ but we are not able to find those games.
This was really helpful to me as I am learning end game
"Sorry about that"

Agadmator in every year...
“Sorry about that” ~Agadmator 1987-Future
hearing "Welcome back to the good stuff" after a long day is very refreshing tbh
From all the games I have seen, I believe that Morphy was actually quite imprecise in Endgames, simply because he didn't really get a lot of OTB practice. He generally played instantly and in endgames, that's sometimes quite costly.
Morphy didn’t have much experience playing endgames just because his opponents rarely survived that long
The endgame in general wasn't too heavily studied back then, since if you weren't sacrificing everything and smacking the other guy's king, were you really even playing chess? Still, Morphy's natural understanding of the game allowed him to play the endgame fairly well, this game notwithstanding. Game 3 of his 1857 Chess Congress match with James Thompson comes to mind: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1336498
He played the endgame well but of all aspects of chess, the endgame is the one which most resembles a computer. The only old player who can really match up to modern computer assisted players is probably Capablanca.
Ah yes, *as of move seven this position hasn't been reached again* ...
See you in Chess960
As of move seven we have a completely old position.
Has never reached again
Some of the greatest games of all time are ones a non-titled player can appreciate and watch over and over, and yet find relatively little in there that they're able to actually take into their own games, because the ideas were so brilliant and so situational that the odds of being able to replicate the winning principle are slim. This, whilst decent, some might describe as forgettable. But it's very instructive.
I'm here for the high quality conversation!!!
According to ChessBase Morphy lost 28 games during his carrier
11 with White
17 with black
Including blindfold, odds and simul games
How much did he win?
@@Therworldtube Idk but Chessgames.com has his win percentage at 84% from all his professional games...
Yeah I just checked, he won 174 and lost 24 of his professional games, giving a win percentage of 84.9
@@BinaryRex18 Imagine contributing 3/8 of all Morphy's games
@@Therworldtube Yeah it looks like 3/8 but then they excluded all of the exhibition and casual stuff, odds games in the rest of the 462. It would be interesting to know Morphy's win % when taking into account all the simuls, blindfold, friendly and odds games he played.
Please keep these coming!
Thanks for posting this game , it REALLY helps me !!!!
At 5:41 morphy didn’t take the rook because he loses a pawn at the end of the variation.Rxd8 Qxd8 Bxc5 Qd1 Kf2 Qxc2 Kf1 and Qxc5 winning back the bishop and up a pawn.
Thank you, this bugged me hard until you explained it!
I am really happy to see your progress and evolution throughout the years. You are doing an excellent job and you deserve everything you have achieved. Keep up with the good stuff! :)
Back to back upload. Finally a continuation to the morphy saga without break.
thank you for showing us this game!

@@thegorn That's funny, I can see your take. I grant Agad has a certain masculine charm to him and that voice...but he's spoken for as am I so perhaps in another life. ;-)
Really like the way you explain things , it's not just about the match but special insight on
what a beginner must know , e.g. these pawn pushing in this game.
Thank you for increasing my knowlege of endgames. I appreciate you! Have a great end of the week my guy!
you should award yourself the morphy head for spotting that line of conversation at 14:50
before watching your videos i liked chess but after watching your videos ive develop a crazy obsession for chess, i cant stop playing. everytime i watch your videos i learn stuff i didnt know and it makes me wanna play chess even more.
Just loved this video
Very instructive end game!
I'm completely good with showing Morphy's losses and especially when there are basic king and pawn end game principles to be learned from it.
There are plenty of Morphy brilliances to see. Like you say, the saga wouldn't be a saga if it was just a one way street of Morphy victories. Plus, we get some insights of 19th century style and ideas.
King and pawn end games are my favourite. Please keep streaming them. Thank you!!
For people wondering why at 5:41 , why you can't capture the rook wich deflects the queen then you capture the bishop , this is why..
Ok i found that it does not work as after all is exchanges, queen to d1 check (king moves to f2) then queen to c2 check picks up the bishop with a pawn
Really instructive video, thanks. ;)
excellent game. thank you for bringing this classic to life for us. i especially love these games when it comes down to 1 tempo.
Pawn ending is really exciting, a lot of calculating moves not only with king but as you said pawn moves too are really important.
I'm sure my friends at the bar and library will like such high quality conversation.
In a world gone mad I love this wonderful, soothing chess oasis. Thanks.
That quote on top gives me hope!!!
nice game! keep up the good work!
I found this very informative. King pawn end games are something I'm not very good at, and so I found this quite educational.
I love how you are handling the saga so far bro.
Agadmator drops the library and bar bomb again.

" eh, sorry bout' dat" ... Knight to D2
Great video agad 🔥🔥
You still the best
Just add more suspense to the videos, not just for the title but also for the intro. Specially when you analyze old games.
Wish you all the best Antonio
13:11 Even Medo can't believe that just happened.
Look at what Jose Capablanca says :- "You will have to lose hundreds of games to become a good player".
Morphy didn’t even lose 30 so... he didn’t become “Morphy Good”
Well... I've probably lost thousands, so I must be a superb player.
@@gmpillo604 yeah but Capablanca himself considered Morphy to be peerless. He was probably speaking for the rest of us mortals lol
So much sarcastic title for the legend Morphy ... I always win and then showing game where he loses.
@agadmator's Chess Channel, I love the endgame, and have studied it for years. At 9:02, you mention gxf6 and of course black is lost, but what about Kxf6? This of course must be calculated, as it's VERY tricky! So, white goes KH4(g4 and WHITE would be on the verge of losing as he is in zugzwang), and then g6 by black, Kg4 by white, takes takes, and all of a sudden, black has the move e4!, because if white plays dxe4, then c4 and white is only barely in time to stop the pawn, while the black king is a very good defender of the two passed e and f pawns(but of course cannot take them). But after the black c-pawn is grabbed successfully, White is, again, winning. Just wanted to show you that gxf6 is NOT forced, and Kxf6 is defiantly, although losing, the trickier way to play as black! I think that gxf6 is just the automatic response, as it "fixes" blacks pawn structure.
Anyway, thanks for reading, and I'd love a game in the future if that would be possible on Lichess. I'm @pipandchuk there too!
watching games like these and knowing the history instantly makes you the boss of the library
This is a great saga :)
do ur thing **enjoys the show**
Phew! This shows the quality of end game!
Love it!
I'll definitely mention this game to my friends at the bar and the library ! especially the wrong pawn push
Holy molly, the earliest i have been for a video, good day mr antonio
Yaa..i also enjoyed endgame lesson man..so yeah .thanx again for the video, keep it up ure the best!!
4:04 beautiful checkmate I agree!
Finally Agadmator admitted all of this is in fact just to impress the friends ATBATL.
Good lesson on pawn end game.
Loved the game
I agree. Show them all!
The funny part is that there is actually a bar in a library that I know of. It's the main Boston public library. They renovated it at least a year ago. I was there once last year and noticed from afar a bunch of people in the middle of the day enjoying alcoholic drinks in the bar. They were all dressed like they were at the Royal Ball in London. It was obviously and unfortunately for upper-class or rich people, complete w/ a couple well-dressed hosts (in bow ties) manning the door. Not my type of place...Heck, bars in general aren't my type of place.
Higher quality conversations.
Amazing pawn ending. If I am playing against Morphy, I will trade my pieces and go for the ending ASAP. Barnes outplayed him in the ending too.
I like this game, thanks! It will help my game, too.
It's only 4 minutes and someone disliked already😂

Philidor Defense: Boden Variation (C41)
1. e4 c5 2. d4 cd4 3. Nf3 Nc6
What?!
Of course you should continue showing us those games you think are interesting.
You can learn from a defeat as much as a win and those videos pain the full picture for us.
How he won and also how he lost. A lot of us won't, for a reason or another, real the full history of Morphy or other players and so this is one of the few places that we can get the big picture without spending too much time.
Can you make a video showcasing some more of "the long opposition" of kings?
Thanks Ivy
agree with your comment on morphy saga, show everything
Evendo many grandmaster opened UA-cam channel... I always prefer this channel... The best👍👍👌👌
Agree with the final comments as well. When you see game after game of Morphy just wrecking these people you can start to believe he's just playing scrubs... but Lowenthal, Bird, Anderssen, Stanton were the best of the era, and could easily punish mistakes.
Great game
When you are so early that the video is only available in 360p.
Nickname is definitely your own name.
Yeah, that's a real Nakamura just like I'm a real Paul Morphy.
Actually, I really liked this game as i really enjoy the king&pawn endgame, thanks for the videos
Wow did not expect to see Morphy lose an endgame like that.
I didn't see Morphy's A and B pawns in the thumbnail and thought Löwenthal was somehow up 2 pawns :)
Why do people down vote these videos.
Excellent presentation, educational, and doesn't ask for subs or likes.
I truly don't understand people.
Some of it are probably miss-taps. Especially on a small phone screen. Others have read just the title "This happens to all of us" and concluded it's something about car breaking on the highway, or having a premature ejaculation. Then got totally disappointed, since they don't even play chess. Also, let's not forget sleepwalkers... or sleepclickers...
So at 5:43 if rook takes on d8 isn't that crushing because the queen would be forced to take and then the bishop on c5 hangs ?
Nope, black would actually get free pawn,, after white took the bishop, its gonna be a check by black queen and then pick pawn at C2 while getting the white bishop next
After hundreds of videos, I was finally able to perceive the meaning of the initial soundcheck at 0:35, probably due to the echo of the sound of the pawn! :)
Best intro ever
5:45 Why cant white capture rook on D8 with check, queen recaptures and then capture bishop on C5?
I think ,
after e takes on c5 - black has Qd1x check.
one of the possibilities king to F2: Qd2X with check and after king moves grab that bishop on c5
nice tactic though😌
After Bxc5 Qd1+ Kf2 Qxc2+ Kf1 Qxc5
Strange to see Morphy blow the endgame twice in the span of ~15 moves
Agadmator being sarcastic. 1:17
‘We have a capture fest on the D5 square. Captures, captures. We have captures and captures”
Lot to learn from games lost by Murphy
I feel that sometimes people are able two throw games for..whatever reason, I can only imagine, especially back then
Nice video agad
About the Capa quote; What did he know about losing chessgames, he is probably talking about some other board or cardgame
