What's this " Spot", on CW you seem to be hitting...it's off camera.

"SPOT" is a button you push to generate the right tone for your CW calibration. "SPOT turns the CW receiver spotting hetero- dyne oscillator on while pressed ..." see the manual here: www.radiomanual.info/schemi/YAESU_HF/FT-990_user.pdf

Thanks for watching and for commenting. Sorry, but I was on LSB at first, not USB, as I had said. I will make a better video with some clarification.
It would be easier if WWV were stronger here, and readable on the other transmission frequencies. We are at the bottom of sunspot cycle 24 right now, so propagation is poor. You can read about WWV here: www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/radio-stations/wwv

I was with you up until you did the CW thing. Can you explain that a bit further?

Nice Video, I have a FT990 as well and I always wanted to know if it was off frequency. Do you know where the internal adjustment would be inside the radio?

It is on one of the pull-out boards, I think. Mine is so close that I did not want to mess with it. The service manual will tell us.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your comment/question.

Sorry if this a really ignorant question, but in this new age of instant Mobile/WiF/Streaming etc.. etc.. Why do Hams keep going? - Is it perhaps something like the fascination in the attempt to home in on/resolve the imprecise / intangible? / something like that?

Дело даже не в этом, просто мы уже не можем без радиосвязи на КВ и без Азбуки Морзе! Это завораживает и очаровывает на всю жизнь! 73!

Ham radio is not a replacement for person to person communications. It's not a very good form of communication when compared to cell phones, it lacks selectivity and privacy. When you call someone on a cell phone you get that person and only that person, selectivity and privacy. Pretty much all hams also have cell phones and use them with each other regularly. I often get text messages and e mails from other hams while we are talking on the radio. What ham radio is, is an electronics hobby society of radio enthusiasts using radio as a social form of communication. It is the predecessor to social media and an old school form of social media where you actually communicate directly with friends and strangers through various different media be it phone(voice),CW, JT-8, C-4, SSTV, RTTY e.t.c. Ham radio was social media 80 years before there was social media. Hams were sending each other videos over the air 60+ years ago. They were sending each other coded text messages 100 years ago. The geeks and nerds of the 60s and 70s were ham radio operators who were building the cell phone systems we use today at work and building their own home computers on the weekend.
