I have searched high and low trying to understand modulation (I just bought a shortwave radio). This is the only explanation I found that helped me understand it. Great video!

Very helpful for newbies like me to understanding AM and FM modulation. But I have a question: For the original AM radio, I grasp that the radio dial would adjust the carrier _frequency_ (in kHz) to "tune" to a broadcast radio "band", and the circuitry would demodulate out the amplitude of the original source signal (prior to modulation, i.e., signal combination). Good so far. But for FM... I'm a bit confused. If _frequency_ is again used as the carrier signal to enable "band" selection (this time, in MHz), but now the source signal *also* uses frequency and is combined or "modulated" with the carrier signal, and has the effect of slowing down or speeding up the overall frequency of the carrier signal... then my question is, how can a radio tuned to a very precise radio frequency, say "98.9 MHz", not experience cut outs when the combined signal drops in and out of that specific band frequency? Stated slightly differently, with AM, while the amplitude of the overall signal is modulated to encode the source signal with a higher and lower amplitude. But it still remains locked to a set carrier frequency. Thus, a radio can "tune" into that set frequency and the proceed to demodulate out the source signal. But with FM, if the overall frequency is shifting around due to the combined carrier and source signals modulating on frequency instead of amplitude, how can a radio "lock onto" a set radio channel or "frequency" if the frequency its self is changing due to modulation?
Great video. Computer modems for telephone lines (I am not sure if hardly anyone uses them anymore) are modulators and demodulators getting the digital binary language of the computer off of an analog telephone signal. The sound that you would hear if someone picked up another telephone in another room on the same line (weird sound) I believe would be the audio representation of those 1's and 0's.
carrier waves should be called "reference" wave. Would've saved me a headache. The receiver figures out how the reference wave is changed "modulated" over time and works out the signal wave. This was the best vid and explanation I've found on the net. Thanks.
Also, this is a great video. It is always good though to explain the AM and FM band of commercial radio and that other radio frequencies can be either AM or FM(old CB radios verses some or most walkie talkies)
Firstly Thanks you for all the efforts and kindness and the Explanation. Could you please also share the Circuit Diagrams for the AM Modulator Circuit along with the components values so that I can realize the thing by constructing the circuit on BreadBoard/WishBoard ?
In AM or FM, the source signal (sound) contains both volume changes and frequency changes. I've never been clear how AM or FM encode for both. Amplitude changes are kind of obvious, but frequency changes? Not so much. Does this have to do with bandwidth? How do two frequencies get modulated? It can't be just the amplitude of the carrier, can it?
If I understand correctly, in FM, the broadcast frequency is the center of a small frequency bandwidth. Within that bandwidth, the frequency (rate) of deviation of the center frequency corresponds to source frequency. The amount of frequency deviation from the center frequency corresponds to source amplitude. It helps to think of it in the frequency domain as well as the time domain.
Modulation is changing the property of one wave (the carrier wave) based on the *value* of another wave (the signal). The value of a wave as a function of time is the immediate displacement of the oscillator that produces the wave, but frequency or amplitude are properties of the whole wave, or at least a local region of it around a specific point in time. You don't need to "encode" properties of the function like the amplitude or frequency, you just encode the function itself, as variations in the amplitude or frequency of the resulting wave.
The superposition actually was used - to encode color on top of the luminance signal of television/video. The phase shift from the reference ("color burst") at the beginning of each video scan line was the tint/color, the amplitude of the added color frequency was the color intensity ;-) That's why old black and white televisions without a color frequency filter showed checkerboards and moirée patterns when receiving a color signal...

Could you possibly manipulate frequency, modulation, etc, to make a high frequency energy signal like bluetooth mimic a lower frequency signal like rf? Could you manipulate bluetooth in a way that allows it to interact with rf devices?
That unit with solar panel with speaker , what is it called ? And if you can give link to purchase this with light modulator flash . Thanks..link in description is not working
I came to ask my own question but this one really got me thinking! I may be wrong, but I believe the modulation is happening to the light output (voltage / frequency shifts), rather than the actual photons of light or the wavelength. Bear in mind that wavelengths of light are orders of magnitude shorter than audio / radio and shouldn’t be a factor when considering either of the modulation frequencies. Obviously more light means more photons, but my thinking is that the LED chip in the torch will naturally have its own combination of wavelengths being emitted, which the circuitry can’t control. I imagine this would vary slightly depending on the output power, ambient conditions, etc., but I don’t think a solar panel should be able to distinguish between these in such a manner. I think if our eyes were infinitely sensitive, we would be able to see the brightness of the light varying very slightly as the modulated signal is transmitted, in the same way many LEDs use PWM to effectively dim. If photons or the wavelengths of the torch light were being altered, the variation would be seen in the colour of the light, rather than the brightness. Again… I think! 😂
Thanks, that was great! I watched a bunch of videos, but this one helps me visualize more readily. I am wondering how the modulating signal is applied to the "data". You demonstrated that it is not addition of the waves, but what it is it? Division? Is it by applying the calculus function of a sine wave with the desired parameters for frequency and amplitude?
I have been struggling to get a clear explanation of this. This is the best I've found so far. Can you suggest any scientists who discovered/ worked out the concept of modulation at its simplest level?
He has a picture on his site of Alexander Graham Bell transmitting data via modulated light waves from the sun in 1880. That seems pretty significant if nothing else.
In the early days of radio, FM was thought to be impossible. Also, you can receive more than one AM signal at a time, but not with FM, it has to be one or the other. You might could have mentioned this.
How is signal added to carrier wave? What exactly occurs in the spot where they are added together? Why does carrier wave change just because signal is added to it? What device is used to add the carrier wave and the signal wave together? What happens at the other end, how is signal extracted from the composite waves, how is done and by what?
Yeah, this part could've been a bit clearer. Adding them up generates the wave that he said it was NOT a modulated signal. You, actually, have to multiply the two trig functions to get the modulated signal.
What modulation scheme does high bandwidth fiber transmission lines use? Is it QAM OFDM like cell towers and HFC plants are or is it something totally different?
I was hit with some questions and this answered a whole lot of them. My last one is how advanced chips would you need to have in order for this to work. To me it seems like you need to do some math to undo the modulation and that sounds like it would need some kind of chip doing math to turn it back into what it originally was. Perhaps I underestimate the computing power of old first and second generation radios but I am looking for how that process works specifically
Hello while in FM. the frequency of combinations of carrier signal and source signal is changed allover the time how my radio can receive the source signal at one frequency? thank you
What would you say when I told you that it is not amplitude modulation instead it is intensity modulation. C is all ways equal to frequency × wave length with any electro magnetic wave. Amplitude is strictly varying with frequency.
If one hooked up an AM antenna, tuned to a specific frequency, to their skull or ear bone, they couldn’t make out anything intelligible, correct? They might pick up changes in amplitude, but without a decoder, couldn’t make out audio?
This was very helpful. Your visual examples were great. I’m just getting in RF so could you put together another video on why we need to modulate the message? Maybe I missed it in this video.
A couple of reasons to modulate a higher frequency carrier wave would be to transmit the signal farther and also the antennas can be smaller. The higher the carrier frequency (the one you are modulating) the smaller the antenna can be. For example, a 1 MHz signal has a 1/2 wavelength (for dipole antenna) of 468 feet vs a 1GHz signal with a 1/2 wavelength of .468 feet (~14.3 cm). In his case the antenna is the size of light waves ... so, pretty small!
Now I have a clear understanding of the basics of am and fm. Now to find a video that explains an electronic circuit of a transmitter that converts audio sound to am or fm.
I’m a ham operator. And this is THE best explanation of AM vs FM I’ve ever seen!

If one hooked up an AM antenna, tuned to a specific frequency, to their skull or ear bone, they couldn’t make out anything intelligible, correct? They might pick up changes in amplitude, but without a decoder, couldn’t make out audio?
thanks , what is the name of program you used to see the waves

Amazing Info
Thanks
Awesome video - thanks so much
really loved learning this stuff pr
Yes I have got little bit explanation about modulation
Amazing devices! How can one make them or get them? :)
Awesome! Loved it and great job!
This was very helpful. Your visual examples were great. I’m just getting in RF so could you put together another video on why we need to modulate the message? Maybe I missed it in this video.
Modulation means to change. It’s not the message that’s modulated it’s the carrier wave in such a way that carries the message.
In his case the antenna is the size of light waves ... so, pretty small!
i adore this video
Geat explanation!! Thanks
4:43 - You might also call this "DC bias modulation".
This is a great and fundamental demonstration. Thank you!
You’re welcome.
Wow! This has helped me tremendously. Thank you so much sir! Feeling more confident!
Glad it helped!
Excellent demo. I now have a much better understanding. Thanks!!
Amazing demonstration. Thank you🦑
This was extremely helpful!
Wonderful! Thank you!
Where did you get the animation to explain AM and FM Modulation?
my mind has been blown
Great video, good job!
That's awesome so is that song listen to it when you're really high
I want a video about dsb fm with the circuit that doing it
Thanks. Very clear.
Wow man this is such a great video I love it. :)
Now I have a clear understanding of the basics of am and fm. Now to find a video that explains an electronic circuit of a transmitter that converts audio sound to am or fm.
Did you find one?
which app or website that u use to visualize the waves pls?
i use octave/matlab. Its excellent for analog and digital signals
@@panagiotisk9670 i'll consider, appreciate that
Your the best
Pretty crazy how our brains have created all this in the 3D. The brain is making itself and continues.
You need a picture of Nikola Tesla in your wall as well
I do!
easy to understand
what was that song tho?:D
Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band
cool video :)
Why is it so interesting?
Thanks!
Welcome!
you saved me

Thanks good content recommend by Radio Amateurs of/du Canada (RAC) course. 💜🇨🇦
Sorry thanks for this presentation
thank oyu
A- no for answer! + M-- v. movement - much of! Oriental
