That amount of carnage is actually a compliment for the hemi! Most other engines stop after just one failure…but this kept running, well enough to keep breaking!

Pro tip: if the plastic label on the oil filter got so hot that it shrunk and shriveled up, the engine was *severely* overheated. Assuming the label is LDPE, that melts at nearly 400 deg F. Engine oil can overheat without the coolant overheating if the oil is run low, especially during high RPM. Also, in my experience, when the bearings get so hot that they weld themselves to the crank, it happened at high RPM. If it happens at low RPM, the bearings will just wear away to nothing because the heat load is lower. The combination of high RPM and no lube causes the huge heat spike that welds the bearing to the crank. It also takes a LOT of energy to break rods and shoot holes through the block, so that doesn’t happen at low RPM either.

While the filter may not have picked up bits from the main carnage event, it could be filled with sparkles from the bearings starting to go. I hack into the filter every oil change on my old Camry at 200k+ miles - there's seemingly always a bit of glitter in there, maybe a few small chunklettes to boot, but it keeps going down the road fine... for now lol
I’d be willing to bet it came apart doing donuts endlessly like you see in those lame take-over videos. That’s one kind of scenario that would do this. The lack of metal in the top of it is also telling. Did not run for long once the excrement hit the air circulator.

As a car enthusiast but non-mechanic, I like to watch these videos in order to learn how the various engines work. While I realize that perhaps you like to sell the heads fully assembled, I would love to see a valve train taken apart as well sometime. It interests me to see how the different valve trains work between pushrod and overhead cams, solid lifters, hydraulic lifters, rocker arms, valves etc. Thanks for the great channel.
My bet is, this car was involved with an incident utilizing flashing blue lights. It either had them on its roof, or it was in front of the one that had them on its roof. Either way, classic definition of "run it 'til it don't go no mo"

Honestly looks like some rich kid got bought an older SRT8 and never checked the oil level. Beat the ever living hell out of it until it broke the rod from lack of bearings.

They ran that engine without oil and ran it until the rod bearings spun. When the pistons hit the head and disintegrated it threw the rods out the bottom. I've seen this before.

What a waste! Eric, great video as always. I enjoyed the Victory teardown, and I'll put my vote on the side of doing more engines that vary from the norm. However, I doubt anything will be better than a good old meltdown in a car/truck engine.
this is the only thing i can imagine, it looks like the bearings were completely starved of oil. normally when something is simply low on oil we see scratches in the bearings but this is something else entirely, and the fact that it busted through the coolant jacket and theres no milk shake anywhere is a pretty good sign too. i want to see that video
This reminds me of my mom's one car. She was driving the car with no oil in it. The engine blew up in a spectacular fashion. Seeing engines this messed up reminds me of my disease pathology class I took while getting my masters. You hate to see all the horrible things happening, but it's really cool to look at.
we got a dart real cheap with the 1.4 multi air off of a guy who thought just the turbo was blown as it was off when he got it. We put a used turbo on it and all was peachy... for a while. It was my brother in laws car and one day it developed a misfire on cylinder 3. Turns out compression was bad on cyl 3. Took the head off expecting to see a bad head gasket or something and turns out there’s a CHUNK missing out of the top side of the piston, top ring showing and everything. I’m amazed it was still running. The piston was just bad so we redid the head because a valve was messed up on that cyl 3. We got a new piston/rod put it in and it ran great. Sold the car shortly after though. I think they were fed up with the problems it was giving them lol. Sorry for the essay just my experience with the 1.4.

An object in motion tends to stay in motion. I had an engine seize as soon as I pushed in the clutch, turns out the oil pump failed during an uphill pull
That was catastrophically sad. Almost seems like maybe someone changed the oil but forgot to refill it got on the road right away and blew it up. Since as you said there's no debris in the pickup and no metal pumped through the motor makes me agree that there was no oil in it to begin with.
After working in a big name auto powertrain testing facility, years of high rpm 1000hr durability tests on many engines of the automakers and out of all engines I have experience with, the 5.7 and 6.1 hemis were always fragile and seldom ever finished a succesful durability test. It definitely doesn't help when you run it out of oil. 🤮
@@chrisbrown3925 there’s a lot more than a bottom end that makes an engine reliable. I mean, even Ford’s cheap Ecoboost engines have a very well engineered bottom end.

This is one of those motors that I think somebody did on purpose. It had a rod knock because they had knowingly abused it. So, they just "bricked" it to see how long it would last and exactly how much damage they could do. (Speaking from direct personal knowledge.)
Your wise beyond your years and most would try to gage the condition/someone was inside of it with a impact is impossible. Hand feeling and gauging bolts by using a breaker bar or rachet is invaluable.
I think what makes your vids great is they replicate exactly what the viewer's experience would be. "Owww!" "Ewww!" "Why did [I let] that fall??" And the best part: "glad I don't have to pay for that mistake!"
I've only been around one running car engine when it slung a rod. I have to say it was a sudden and violent end with an inspection port in the side of the block and a piece of the rod cap on the ground underneath. It was a 4.6 in a Police Interceptor Crown Victoria which were normally pretty reliable.
I was expecting 4 bolt mains at least, 2 bolt, geesh (I don't count the cross-bolts) Haven't seen a 2v since my 68' Thanks for a great teardown, good to see what the competitions engines are made of

One thing i noticed about this engine is the oil filter looked like it was possibly on or near a fire, with the label burned off. Possibly happened after the engine blew up, and all the inside juice became outside juice near hot exhaust
Have you ever seen a 1/2” wave in the crown of a piston parallel to the wrist pin? I had a ‘76 TR-7 that lost the connecting rod nuts. The crank came around and slammed the remaining connecting rod through the block and pulled the piston skirts into the crank shaft. This bent the crown of the piston up above the skirts while the wrist pin pulled the center of the piston down. The piston didn’t crack, it just warped like something from a Salvador Dali painting.

I'd say the connecting rod didn't get molten but did get very soft - bright red perhaps. The oiled black of the metal on various components needs a lot of heat - heat that needs to be visible before dropping into oil.
Another break on through to the other side video! Thanks! Someone tried to see how long the engine would work with no oil. These people are like cats testing to see if gravity stills works except it's if the oil light will go out.
I have a sneaking suspicion this engine was destroyed intentionally. The engine was likely ticking because of a failing lifter at the back of the engine, and was likely deemed beyond repair. It was probably redlined until the front two rods and/or pistons came apart(in no particular order). Although I wonder if this engine was really actually low on oil. Once the piston squirter was "removed" by the rods the oil pressure will definitely take a dive after that, especially downstream of the squirter which in the case of late model hemi, these engines lube from front to back, everything but the front main(which feeds the number one rod journal) and cam journals is downstream of the front squirter.
It's possible to get an indication if an engine has been 'bricked' I find that the valve keepers are stuck hard in the top retainer caps where the engine has been valve bouncing at high rpm and the keepers have hammered themselves into the caps
Eric had mentioned that if there was oil in the engine debris would have been present in other places (head, Pickup screen, oil pump) there was none to speak of.
@@drswanny9000 I have doubts about Eric's hypothesis for two main reasons. First is that these hemi engines have a very fine wire mesh on the oil pickup tube, much finer then in other engines in my experience. This ought to be good for keeping all but the smallest debris out of the pump let alone the filter. Just look how much debris made it to top of this 5.3 Eric tore down a while ago. ua-cam.com/video/NfW_C9Gu4NQ/v-deo.html. This 5.3 was at least as bad as this 6.1 and the oiling system pumped almost nothing of note to the top of the engine or even the bearings despite much larger holes in the pump screen, which was packed with metal. The second reason is less speculative. In the process of the number one hyper-tectonic piston separating into mcnuggets the rod broke the cylinder wall, which would've let much of the coolant into the crankcase, dramatically increasing the fluid level in the crankcase, also dramatically thinning the oil in the process, which assuming this engine continued to run after the explosion(which I do) and considering the piston squirters plumb into the main oil gallery on these engines, in which the oil flows from front to back, and virtually every point of lubrication in these engines is downstream of that broken squirter, I don't neccessarily believe that the oil pump was sucking on nothing, I simply think that the oil was being diluted by coolant and much of that was pumped right back into the pan, leaving little if any oil pressure for the rest of the engine.
Wrist pins are made out of a Tool Steel. Which is a much stronger steel. The block could get sleeved, but it's a waste of time. That thing was at the point of going super nova. Crazy that it didn't burst into flame when she let loose.
When you tear down engines with the type of damage that this Hemi suffered, I try to imagine what sort of person was driving it literally, to death. The damage to your Hemi looks almost intentional. The racket it made as it turned itself into a non-functioning six-cylinder damned heavy paperweight had to be deafening. I can imagine some spoiled rich kid that was told by dad he would be written out of the will if he tattooed his eyeballs, stretched his ear lobes, and had his tongue split like a snake at which point spoiled rich kid jumps into his dad purchased Dodge Charger to show dad he won't be pushed around. Hitting the highway with the gas pedal to the floor rich kid will push that Hemi until it either runs out of gas or blows up. He must have had a full tank.

i'd heard once that those engines have to fast of oil pump and that it will drain the pan filling the top end before the oil can make it back down causing low/lack of oil

Chrysler takes their cylinder deactivation very seriously, though it's rare to see an engine that only turns off 2 cylinders. Very clever engineering.

I rebuilt a 76 trans am with a frozen engine, the cause was the wrong size oil filter that did not seal. Nothing surprises me.

That was catastrophically sad. Almost seems like maybe someone changed the oil but forgot to refill it got on the road right away and blew it up. Since as you said there's no debris in the pickup and no metal pumped through the motor makes me agree that there was no oil in it to begin with.

After working in a big name auto powertrain testing facility, years of high rpm 1000hr durability tests on many engines of the automakers and out of all engines I have experience with, the 5.7 and 6.1 hemis were always fragile and seldom ever finished a succesful durability test. It definitely doesn't help when you run it out of oil. 🤮

The 6.1 shure has an expensive bottom end, that crankshaft is (was) a work of art...don't think of it as fragile...
@@chrisbrown3925 there’s a lot more than a bottom end that makes an engine reliable. I mean, even Ford’s cheap Ecoboost engines have a very well engineered bottom end.

Good video as usual. Your videos have me checking my oil much more often than I used to. I have always changed in on schedule, but now check it often. Keep up the good work.
This is one of those motors that I think somebody did on purpose. It had a rod knock because they had knowingly abused it. So, they just "bricked" it to see how long it would last and exactly how much damage they could do.
(Speaking from direct personal knowledge.)
They could have had their stereo and amp on full blast.
Might even have gone as far as draining the oil first, hence why no debris in the oil pick up.

Your wise beyond your years and most would try to gage the condition/someone was inside of it with a impact is impossible. Hand feeling and gauging bolts by using a breaker bar or rachet is invaluable.
I think what makes your vids great is they replicate exactly what the viewer's experience would be. "Owww!" "Ewww!" "Why did [I let] that fall??"
And the best part: "glad I don't have to pay for that mistake!"
I've only been around one running car engine when it slung a rod. I have to say it was a sudden and violent end with an inspection port in the side of the block and a piece of the rod cap on the ground underneath. It was a 4.6 in a Police Interceptor Crown Victoria which were normally pretty reliable.

One thing i noticed about this engine is the oil filter looked like it was possibly on or near a fire, with the label burned off. Possibly happened after the engine blew up, and all the inside juice became outside juice near hot exhaust

Have you ever seen a 1/2” wave in the crown of a piston parallel to the wrist pin? I had a ‘76 TR-7 that lost the connecting rod nuts. The crank came around and slammed the remaining connecting rod through the block and pulled the piston skirts into the crank shaft. This bent the crown of the piston up above the skirts while the wrist pin pulled the center of the piston down. The piston didn’t crack, it just warped like something from a Salvador Dali painting.

You should open up that oil filter to look at the filter material.
The wrist-pins always make it because they are hard as a coffin nail. They will penetrate practically anything once they attain projectile velocities.
6:51 I notice when you take apart the rocket arm and rocket shaff you didn't do the pattern on the first one but you did the pattern on the last 3 does it matter when you opening it up to do a pattern?

I'd say the connecting rod didn't get molten but did get very soft - bright red perhaps. The oiled black of the metal on various components needs a lot of heat - heat that needs to be visible before dropping into oil.
Another break on through to the other side video! Thanks! Someone tried to see how long the engine would work with no oil. These people are like cats testing to see if gravity stills works except it's if the oil light will go out.
I have a sneaking suspicion this engine was destroyed intentionally. The engine was likely ticking because of a failing lifter at the back of the engine, and was likely deemed beyond repair. It was probably redlined until the front two rods and/or pistons came apart(in no particular order). Although I wonder if this engine was really actually low on oil. Once the piston squirter was "removed" by the rods the oil pressure will definitely take a dive after that, especially downstream of the squirter which in the case of late model hemi, these engines lube from front to back, everything but the front main(which feeds the number one rod journal) and cam journals is downstream of the front squirter.
It's possible to get an indication if an engine has been 'bricked' I find that the valve keepers are stuck hard in the top retainer caps where the engine has been valve bouncing at high rpm and the keepers have hammered themselves into the caps
Eric had mentioned that if there was oil in the engine debris would have been present in other places (head, Pickup screen, oil pump) there was none to speak of.
My first thought after seeing all this was that someone was doing burnouts until the engine exploded.
@@drswanny9000 I have doubts about Eric's hypothesis for two main reasons. First is that these hemi engines have a very fine wire mesh on the oil pickup tube, much finer then in other engines in my experience. This ought to be good for keeping all but the smallest debris out of the pump let alone the filter. Just look how much debris made it to top of this 5.3 Eric tore down a while ago. ua-cam.com/video/NfW_C9Gu4NQ/v-deo.html. This 5.3 was at least as bad as this 6.1 and the oiling system pumped almost nothing of note to the top of the engine or even the bearings despite much larger holes in the pump screen, which was packed with metal.
The second reason is less speculative. In the process of the number one hyper-tectonic piston separating into mcnuggets the rod broke the cylinder wall, which would've let much of the coolant into the crankcase, dramatically increasing the fluid level in the crankcase, also dramatically thinning the oil in the process, which assuming this engine continued to run after the explosion(which I do) and considering the piston squirters plumb into the main oil gallery on these engines, in which the oil flows from front to back, and virtually every point of lubrication in these engines is downstream of that broken squirter, I don't neccessarily believe that the oil pump was sucking on nothing, I simply think that the oil was being diluted by coolant and much of that was pumped right back into the pan, leaving little if any oil pressure for the rest of the engine.
Wrist pins are made out of a Tool Steel. Which is a much stronger steel. The block could get sleeved, but it's a waste of time. That thing was at the point of going super nova. Crazy that it didn't burst into flame when she let loose.
When you tear down engines with the type of damage that this Hemi suffered, I try to imagine what sort of person was driving it literally, to death. The damage to your Hemi looks almost intentional. The racket it made as it turned itself into a non-functioning six-cylinder damned heavy paperweight had to be deafening. I can imagine some spoiled rich kid that was told by dad he would be written out of the will if he tattooed his eyeballs, stretched his ear lobes, and had his tongue split like a snake at which point spoiled rich kid jumps into his dad purchased Dodge Charger to show dad he won't be pushed around. Hitting the highway with the gas pedal to the floor rich kid will push that Hemi until it either runs out of gas or blows up. He must have had a full tank.

i'd heard once that those engines have to fast of oil pump and that it will drain the pan filling the top end before the oil can make it back down causing low/lack of oil
