Today I wanted to talk to you about the process that goes into line breeding aquarium fish- specifically white clouds to make them the long fin, meteor version. Enjoy watching them caught in the act! I adore white clouds, and I have ones with medium long fin age, and I love them. I've seen males spar, and it's fantastic 💕 hoping for babies some time
Rachel O'Leary ...I love your sciencey, geek stuff. Please be yourself and share away. Your excitement makes your vlogs that much better. Please include fish you may not have yourself, maybe some friends fish.
Definitely more videos like this. Only so many times a channel can show their tanks. I agree with the balloon lines. I know that it all comes down to personal perspective but I dont like certain traits. I love long fins on betta fish but not so long that they can barely move.
I remember reading about the first balloon mollies brought from a Singapore fish farm by Herbert Axelrod in Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine when I was a kid. I remember thinking that they were a little grotesque, as they are just deformed molly's.
Some of us enjoy the geeks science based stuff. I have just started my own line breeding project on a different species so this subject is of particular interest to me. I agree with you entirely about some of the extreme body types, I have no idea why anybody would want to intentionally breed a line of fish that can't see properly, has such a deformed body shape that they can't grow properly or such ridiculously huge finnage that they can barely swim. Just my opinion.
Thanks for showing these, Rachel! Honored to see my fish in your room! I'm sure they'll do great for you and can't wait to see what the cross with your gorgeous line produces. I always thought the long fin was a simple recessive gene but after messing with this group for 10+ seasons, it really appears to be line-bred. Once I started removing any females with clear or short fins, these really came into their own. I doubt you'll get any normally finned individuals once they reach maturity but do pull any should they pop up. Big thanks to Mike Wilson for quarantining a group and sending them your way. It was great to meet him and talk fish. He's got some of the nicest guppies and Apistos you'll see too -not to mention killies and plants you don't often come across. All of our tanks are enriched by gifting and trading fish, that's what this hobby is all about!
@@christyt.3959 Only locally. These are fish that don't tolerate heat or low oxygen well, and I'm a hobby breeder, not a pro. If ever in the Asheville, NC area, feel free to drop me a line. Perhaps Rachel is shipping some?
I must say, your White Clouds are the best I've seen...and I agree with you on some of the novelty fish. You have introduced me to so many new fish now available on the market, or private breeders. Thanks again Rachel...🎄
I'd LOVE to see more about your White Cloud breeding projects! I just got my first white clouds recently, the Golden version. I'm absolutely loving them! They're so adorable! I'm thinking in the future, I may try some more breeding with them. Do you know if the Gold is dominant or recessive to the Gray? I'm assuming recessive, but I'd love to learn a bit more about how their genetics works. Longfin Goldens I think would be absolutely incredible and might be a future breeding project for me personally. 😊
This video on line breeding is a great explanation of how it works, and just what you're aiming for with it. The close-ups show the colors you're getting much better than some of the other videos with them in it. In the overall shots, they look nice, with a bit more color than usual, but now we can really see their beauty. I would very much enjoy seeing videos on the other lines you're working on.
Rachel continues to unselfishly share her knowledge, experiences and future plans and expectations germane to fish keeping and breeding. I've learned and continue to learn many facets and nuances of this wonderful hobby! Thank you Rachel.
I think you make some of the best content on UA-cam and I enjoy watching all of you videos. I got into you through watching content like this. Keep it rolling.
I just added a group of White Clouds to a tank I'm building up, I really really like them. So much more personality than the tetras I've usually kept. I really hope they start breeding for me too :)
I got some White Cloud Mountain Minnows (just the regular colour/finned variety) a week and a half ago and we already have some babies. They're teeny tiny at the moment. They just hatch yesterday (or maybe before, but yesterday was the day I saw them all). I love my minnows. They're so full of personality. I love these with more yellow in the fins. They're beautiful.
I bought a dozen whiteclouds, put them in a planted 10 gallon for quarantine, with java moss on the bottom. Fed them frozen brine shrimp, FD Plankton, Spirulna flakes and a good general flake, a different food every day on a 4 day rotation. A Neriad snail for algae control. They haven't even finished quarantine and I pulled 12 fry out today.
Coincidentally, not only do we both like using that size of Laguna tub, but I've also been acquiring long fins from different sources over the past few months for exactly the same reason as you, Rachel. great minds must think alike! hehe
Rachel, Love the video discussion on selective breeding of white clouds. I also have a quality strain of meteor minnows. They have a lot of red, as well as yellow, and I am working on maintaining and improving overall color. I have always had a soft spot for white clouds. I have gone through some difficult times since the beginning of the summer, when a serious injury pretty much put me out of commission until I returned home today. I lost my guppy strains, as well as a beautiful strain of blue rams, since I was in rehab a good part of the summer. The adult guppies survived, but all the fry were eaten, and the adults look to be well past breeding age. And we all.know how rams are when water changes do not happen. But my meteor minnows were a major bright spot! I had two generations of them in a heavily planted, established, 20g long tank when I was hospitalized. They still look very good, with only a few losses. They were able to subsist in their aquarium without water changes, and mostly ate the plants and microscopic life in their habitat. Can't wait to see them after some gradual water changes and more food.
Glad you are back home and sorry to hear if your struggles- you probably know I am no stranger to those! Hopefully all else is only onward and upward from here on out
Yes please. I'm newish in about 2 and a half years and I am on guppies and albino Cory's right now. Working on line breeding so real beauties. I will be trying a Betta breeding soon. Fun to see these. White clouds I would love to try them!
Yes, I agree with your stance on weird body morphologies...anything that prevents fish from swimming normally is unethical, in my opinion. Your minnows look incredible! I am really liking the yellow accents. EDIT: I am really interested in learning more about the genetics of fish breeding, so anything you want to post along those lines would be awesome!
Make your inner geek sing!!! My LF white clouds are closer to your new ones than your older line. Since I was just asking you about breeding them, I absolutely want to see updates on your white cloud adventures. I have never been happier since I started buying all those "beginner" fish I kept 30 or 40 years ago. Interesting note: I keep mine in my hillstream tank - ie-high flow. When I turn the power off, they school very tightly together - all 20 about the size of the tennis ball. Power back on, they very loosely shoal in groups of 5-7. Have you noticed any of yours doing that? Fun to watch!
Every time my passion for fishkeeping cools down you post a video that piques my curiosity and by the end I'm sketching out tank ideas. Thanks for being here!
Awesome video! I've never had success breeding White Cloud Minnows. I think I'll add some more plants and give it a go again. Love this type of content!
I agree with you about balloon-body fish, and other extreme mutations, including all the short-body, double tail goldfish. Likewise, I'm not a big fan of long fins on active schooling/shoaling fish, since they really seem to slow them down. However, my biggest pet peeve with line breeding is that over time the original, wild type varieties of many species seem to disappear from the captive bred population.
Wow! Those white clouds are gorgeous, both yours and the new strain. I think I mix of the two will be very interesting. I can't wait to see what you get. I enjoy the geeky stuff. More please :-)
Can't wait to see the results I'm gonna be working on my first white cloud tank in next few weeks an your videos help with that alot keep up the great work you rock Rachael
Love my white clouds, started with 6 they spawned so much I've now got 140 last summer not so much (Probably due to building work in the house) but this summer another 60 fry so far! I've added 6 long fin for a bit of genetic diversity, It's a great excuse to buy a bigger tank now too 😉 👍
years ago I had a heavily planted tank with with white cloud minnows...the babies looked a lot like little cardinal tetras to me & I was stunned as to how they got into my tank! then as they grew out it was obvious they were white cloud babies,LOL
Isn’t this how fish live shorter and less comfortable lives. But how the fish are bred shipped and sometimes kept arnt as some will like to give their pets. She clearly loves her hobby. And does better than most, thankyou for sharing.
And not trying to sound as judgy as it reads. She treats her fish better than I feel like I do. I do want to view more of these. Love to learn.. just mostly the fish we can buy aren’t.. treated w the love of a good person, but bizzness people or caught in the wild w hard to handle ways.. She’s clearly a person I would like to get my fish from. One of the good ones
I'm all for more breeding experiments. Those new fish you got are spectacular. Years and years ago I bought some from Czech Republic that were listed as blue. It was a stretch to call them blue, but the blue was definitely more pronounced in the fins. Now the gold strain, I don't understand that one, they're just so blah. (kind of like albino Sterbai Corys, they are practically the same as albino Aeneus) Speaking of Sterbai, I wouldn't mind seeing those in your fish room. I know, they are pricey and good stock is hard to find, but a guy can dream.
Hey Rachel! Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into your videos. They're always extremely well done and super informative. I've just gotten into the hobby in the past 4 or so months and with watching you and researching my 36 gallon is utterly thriving and I couldn't be more delighted. Cheers! Thanks again!!
White clouds have become my favourite fish. Love your passion for the yellow in them, that's what attracted me to the ones I got. They have some light yellow tips but are still young, hope they colour up even more soon!
Love this project. Have always thought these little fish have such a subtle beauty. I prefer them way more to neons. White clouds have more personality and seem hardier.
Wow! I can't believe just how diffrent the lines are! So cool. I look forward to seeing your newest strain, should really be stunning with all the gold bodies and flowing red fins. Awsome.
I love your more "sciency" stuff! I'm experimenting with a developing a color strain of Endler's (not mixed with guppies). I just don't have enough places to go with the fish I don't want to keep. Especially difficult to get rid of all the females and they seem to overwhelmingly outnumber the male offspring. Thanks for your wonderful videos!
How cool! I have these and mine bred recently and I read where the longfin white cloud minnows aren't particularly a danger to their fry - but only 1 lived. I think the adults did eat them.

The mix of your line and the l new line with the long fins Is going to be absolutely beautiful I just know it those long fins and the yellow color of yours is going to be friggin awesome
Informative video, thanks! I'm a beginner and I got 3 white clouds (1 gold that I named Dyke c: ) for my 5 gallon. From the beginning I thought maybe I wouldn't see any spawning because of the low number, having an AD Frog, and hillstream loach in the tank too. Yesterday as I was cleaning the crap at the bottom I spotted 2 single fry! I mistook them for poop lol. Unfortunately none survived because of the unideal conditions; uncovered filter intake, not enough hiding spots, the frog etc. I'm probably gonna get a breeder box just in case. But I definitely want to get more of them and start breeding. Probably gonna end up buying a tub to have them outside in a pond :)
Your line are absolutely beautiful. A long fin with yellow fins would be beautiful. 😊 I'd always thought White Cloud's needed a fast flow so I'd not considered keeping them, but I may have to rethink that. 😊 I love the science aspect of fishkeeping and would definitely enjoy more videos like this. 👍
My 15g stock is 15 white clouds, 2 male hmpk betta and 6 pygmy corys. I love the longfin, but it's too late now. I know they're a beginner fish buy I still think they're stunning in a classy sort of way

With the ease of breeding these why are there no programs to reintroduce them into their old habitat?
It's been largely destroyed

I like science also, so yes. I also agree about extreme traits in some lines of animals. People have done so much damage to dog lines doing this.
I am always interested when your inner geek shines.

Major props, I appreciate your ethical approach, trying to develop healthy genetic strains, given the aquarium difficulty and inbreeding as is.
I’m geeking right along with you ... you’ve got some really gorgeous fish there! Can’t wait to see the results of the cross.
