@@Beall_ It’s not uncommon for the lights to be on one circuit and the receptacles be on another circuit. Try turning the circuit breaker off one at a time to see if any other lights or receptacles stop working. If they stop working, then you know that power is getting at least that far and then you could check those lights/receptacles (being sure breaker is off) to see if loose wires are the problem and everything downstream is not getting power.
Judging by the wide angle view with a garage door behind him, I think this is a demo panel setup. Still, it is a nice, clean layout, no argument there!
I know electrical wiring (did a whole house rewiring at age 14 and didn’t get a single flaw; also ran telephone and thermostats). But, I went to college for computer sciences, tech major. Some of the most hilarious calls are for simple crap like turning off power strips, power strips unplugged, tripped or plugged into themselves! Also, they’d hook up everything; monitor, keyboard, mouse, network and so on, but no power cords for monitor or computer AND they had no idea where they were.
@@themega3023 Been there, done that, since the late '70s. I can totally sympathize with you, I've seen way too many "simple things" causing problems, that a little bit of knowledge and experience should have prevented.
Your second solution just fixed my problem. I walked into my kitchen this morning and the coffee maker was out, all the outlets not powered. I started to stress. I restarted the breakers, nothing. It never occurred to me to find the gfci outlet to reset and wha-la! Issue fixed! Thanks!
Electrician here. These are actually called Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor. The work by monitoring the output voltage of the outlet and compare it with the return voltage. If the return voltage is lower than the output voltage (Mostly because of a shorted circuit) they cut of the power before the board can fry.
Don’t tell people this stuff. I love these calls. This morning dispatched at 7:30 so on the clock. Got there at 8:45 walked in “these outlets aren’t working since your installers were here” check the panel all good see a little sub underneath with a tripped mini, booya it’s gonna be a good day.
Good point. A GFCI protects everything downstream So if you have an outlet that's dead that's not GFCI keep looking you might have one tripped. It might even be someplace like the back porch or garage
Boy I sure am glad that you told them that the manufacture of GFCI's added a end of life chip. The new GFCI's will only reset a certain amount of times.
I do HVAC, in the winter we always get calls that the system is cooling instead of heating. 90 percent of the time it's the fan on continuous blow or the circulate function set at the tstat. 👍👍
Some people outside the trades can be very stupid. My father in law would call the boiler service company if the temperature on the 2nd floor was higher than the thermostat setting. T-stat must be broken!
Thank you! Two out of three of my outlets went out at night! I wasnt sure if it was from having my A/C on and a lamp that kept flickering but I tried one of the breakers and it worked!!
One of my favourite callouts whilst working on maintenance was someone saying their lamp wasnt working and I got there and the plug was smashed open with exposed wires everywhere, i wonder what the problem was 😂
Maintenance worker here theses calls can be a nuisance probably 90% of the time the gfi can be reset and the breaker but I always keep extra outlets in the truck just incase
I used to do security camera installation and service. I couldn't tell you how many times I got called to locations because someone had turned a power bar off or the power bar breaker had popped or similar things like that.
What if the gfci is old enough that when trying to see if it will fix the outlets that are out in the kitchen, the test button will not go in at all, and the reset goes in but does not click to show the reset but still has power to the gfci? *hypothetically* when this happened, I already checked the panel, tried resetting the breakers, even changed out the OG breaker for an updated one for safety and updated 2 outlets, Which was the symptom not the problem..
That's what I like about cutler hammer c h breakers. They turn completely off when they trip. So there's none of that confusion on how to reset a breaker
GFCIs in garages too. Got a call for that the other day. Tried telling the guy to reset them. Sad part was the yellow indicator light was on and the reset button was sticking out (cooper instead of a leviton).
Some old type BR breakers trips with handle stuck in on-position. I had few customers who did not find tripped breaker, but had no power. I just touched handle slightly it moves to tripped position (middle).
So if my breaker keeps tripping out in the garage like if I blow dry my hair and the breaker is tripping what does possibility mean and could it be costing the extra money? Can you explain part two?
Some times gfis can trip other gfis down the line so check em all in the area even in other rooms sharing walls. In my old apartment we had an outlet in the bathroom that never worked until we found another outlet directly above it in the second floor bathroom under the sink with a tripped gfi..... Reset it and the outlet worked. Not even the maintenance people knew about it... Oh well at least it worked
My outlets in two rooms don’t work I went out to try to turn it on by turning off the breaker and back on but the outlets are still not working what could be the issue. The strange thing is power comes on to these rooms once in a while and then it turns off often on without turning off the breaker
Resetting the breaker is the easiest part of the service call. The difficulty is explaining to some people why they can't plug 3 heaters on the same circuit.
And for a tripped breaker that keeps tripping and when reset it is easily barely hardly touched goes to the middle position? Is a bad breaker need to replace?
I've seen a non-working bathroom outlet in a townhouse condo, all breakers fine. It turned out to be a tripped GFCI outlet in the basement / garage that was feeding the bathroom outlet. 🙄🤦♂️
All these breakers look different than mine I got a flashing red light with a test button ..it popped when iwent to strip the neutral, I was going to install a simple light from Amazon. It's only grounded at the box😢 but works and light on panel went off after the installation was finished...is this a new type of breaker ???
That looks like a Square D style breaker, they have that center toggle trip position, also can have a red/orange flag in a window to indicate a short or overload. Then people get confused when it saps back to the middle. The tan colored Cutler Hammer breakers have no trip position, just Off or On. Is this better or worse? Not really just different.
My outside GFCI tripped. I already knew what to do when that happened. I did all of the above, and it still will not work with a 3 prong plug. It only works with a 2 prong plug. When I plug in a 3 prong plug, you can hear it click again. Did I break it? How do I fix it?! l really need this outlet to work. HELP, PLEASE?! 😭🙏🏼😭🙏🏼😭
Yes, and the unfortunate part of this story is, if it is something as simple as a tripped breaker or GFI, the Electrician should adjust his service call price to reflect what he found, but no, they charge the full price. I was an electrician for a while in my working career, and that was one of the things that helped me change my career. I became an Electrical Engineer. I knew I would never make a good living as an Electrician because of having to rip people off.
What if the outlet is supposed to have a GFCI outlet but does not? I think the GFCI tripped in my POS old house I bought and now my bathroom outlets don't work. In the breaker box there is the breaker box for the bathroom, the one with the little white button. Does that work like a regular breaker? I want my outlets back but I'm not sure how to proceed
Love these service calls. Makes for a easy day.
How about only 1 room out everything else on no breakers tripped?
@@dmo848 could be a failed connection in the circuit.
@@dmo848Mine did the same after a power outage I just reset the breaker and it got fixed
I got this 1 room that doesn’t have power to the lights in the room or hallway light. But the outlets are getting power.

Man, I was about to call an electrician and decided to check youtube and found this video. Problem fixed ! Thank you so much.
Can we just take the time to admire how professionally done this panel is. Someone takes pride in their work!

Its probably code. Or the inspector is simply an AH. You don't want a gnarly rat's nest in there but it doesn't really hafta be "pretty".
Very helpful and worked for my situation! Thank you!

This video was the most useful one I found. I unplugged everything in my house. Switch it on and off and it worked.
Did the same thing and it worked for me as well, I’m am so grateful for this video
All trades have those sort of calls. Love em
*thanks bud, this video resolved my issue!*
Thanks a lot lol my breaker flipped idk how to turn it back on it’s 11pm lol trying to game and this helped alot! Straight to the point

Same over here, some RCDs that's GFI to you have the function fully flick it off then flip it back on.
That panel took time, that will be easy to pull more circuits into because the base panel was done RIGHT!
