    Your GFCI and Panel are in the same place as my garage, as I found out when my son said what is the button for on the socket tester and pressed it, and the GCFI tripped. I had never seen that socket / GFCI before as I have a rack in front of it full of paint and stuff, and for a while wondered why my panel breaker had not tripped, but the other socket he tested was still dead lol.

    I've seen GFCI outlets that have come with little "GFCI" stickers that you can use on downstream outlets to remind you that they are connected to an upstream GFCI outlet. Very handy.

    You saved me $100. We had a trip happen yesterday, when a landscaper wanted to plug in his saw into a GFCI outlet outside. It didn't work so he went to another outlet, not realizing a trip occured. I only notice this morning that the outlets in my bathroom were off, as were outlets in my other bathroom upstairs. I wound up calling for an electrician, but it would be a while before they come out, but after watching this video, I got the knowledge I needed to realize how circuit breakers trip and what position the switch is in to identify the trip. I went to my panel and found the breaker that tripped, reset it properly and voila, I have power again. Thinking ahead if it happens again, with anything, the GFCI could be bad or perhaps even the breaker itself, but at least i walked away with good solid knowledge I can use in the future, thanks!

    Very informative video. I have a GFCI outlet in bathroom and it says correct on my GFCI outlet tester. But another regular outlet in the same bath room, that's connected to this GFCI is not getting any power and getting an open neutral while testing with the tester. Where could be the problem ?

    • @SwingboyPA
      @SwingboyPA 2 роки тому +2

      You could have a loose neutral on the load side of the GFCI or where the neutral would connect to the 2nd receptacle..
      Also: if you are getting that reading *only* when using a GFCI tester, then the receptacle is probably not grounded (an ungrounded GFCI will trip using it's built-in tester, but a plug-in tester won't trip it).

      Your fridge shouldn’t be plugged into a GFCI bc if trips and you’re unaware everything spoils. Should be a dedicated circuit

    • @etherealrose2139
      @etherealrose2139 3 роки тому +2

      Your refrigerator should be on a dedicated NON GFCI circuit. You don't want a nuisance trip or GFCI go bad and shut power down to a working refrigerator and lose all your food. For example, I had a GFCI go bad in my garage. Simply failed in the open position so no power to it. I had my garage fridge hooked up but thankfully found It same day. Could not get it to reset at all, it wasn't the fridge. I swapped receptacles and it's fine now and playing with the old one still can't. I haven't opened this one yet but I probably will just to see what failed. It is old so it's easily possible. I have the fridge hooked up to my unused water softener dedicated outlet now. However I'm dropping 4 dedicated circuits into my garage for various power hungry tools that will trip a circuit if anything else is on them and to put my fridge on one of those 4.
      You may see the same for refrigerators in a garage or water softener system. Generally speaking they should have a single receptacle indicating only one thing can be plugged in at a time and labeled accordingly in the panel. Of course, we all know that doesn't happen.

    Scott, thank you yet again for another outstanding video. On a "dead" outlet I had once the root cause dated back decades earlier when the house was built the electrician "back stabbed" (speed wired) the outlets. Over the years either the neutral or the hot wire ( don't remember which one) simply backed out of the hole it had been shoved into (designed in the receptacle) itself decades earlier. I had been running a vacuum cleaner and I inadvertently jerked the power cord out of the outlet and the outlet no longer functioned. So, in addition to all the causes you mentioned the homeowner could have an issue with the wiring itself or the outlet. You might mention that it is a good idea to label outlets that are protected by GFCI and/or AFCI outlets or circuit breakers in the panel itself. Most GFCI's I come across have numerous small labels included inside the packaging designed to communicate the same thing. I am NOT a licensed electrician.

    The electrician couldn't figure it out. Flickering and power loss to a section then it comes back 5 minutes later. For them to troubleshoot, the power must be gone on these outlets. Nothing burned in the outlets, breakers were fine. Last year, a booster starter was installed on the A/C. I have no idea if this is drawing too much power on the start.

    One bathroom has a gfci, the other does not. I plugged the fan in for a second and it kicked on and off. Now I have no power to either outlet to run anything, but, a tiny old night light will light, but so dim you can barely see it. Tried the rest, it does nothing, not even the click as it used to. Excellent video! Also, another common cause for no power to an outlet is where the outlet and other outlets downstream are “back stabbed” where the wire become loose in the outlet. As a result, no power flows to the outlet and many times half the room has power and the other half doesn’t have power.

    • @billhandymanbill2775
      @billhandymanbill2775 2 роки тому +4

      @@TheFacelessPoet very simple to fix…simply turn off the power to that circuit and remove the “back stabbed” wire from the outlet by pushing a thin screwdriver in the slot next to the wire and push in to release and remove the wire(s) from the receptacle. Reinstall the wires onto the receptacle in the same location(s) but this time secure each wire under each screw and tighten. The screws give a good firm electrical connection and the problem will clear up. Reinstall receptacle and turn on power. I don’t understand why the NEC (National Electrical Code) still allows “back stabbing” when they know it has future problems ahead.

    Yes, i have a question.
    1. Is it recommended to have all circuit breakers AFCI? Or just the main breaker on the house service panel?
    2. In an off-grid, solar house with batteries, inverter and a generator backup, will AFCI breakers be configured as in an on-grid, utility fed system, or will it be different? i ask because in a grid-fed system, the main service panel is neutral-ground bonded and all sub-panels are not. But in off-grid systems, the house panel IS the main and IS neutral-ground bonded. The generator, however, has it's own panel and might be considered to be THE main panel when it is running. In that case, who gets gets bonded and who gets the AFCI?

    Good opportunity to recommend making sure your service panel is properly labeled and that all circuits are labeled. As a home inspector very common to see circuits not labeled in a panel. Always recommend clients make sure all circuits are labeled and to check to make sure all existing labeling is correct. If a recetacle is GFCI protected, but not a GFCI receptacle, recommend identifying where tge GFCI protection is, e.g. breaker at panel or a GFCI receptacle. While it is common for the GFCI protection to be from an adjacent GFCI receptacle, I have seen the protection to be from a GFCI receptacle literally at the other end of a home. Having this identified, likrly at the service panel, will hopefully save someone time and the frustration of trying to figure out why there is no power to a receptacle or what needs to be reset if a breaker or GFCI receptacle is tripped.

      That being said, I hate the panel on the outside. Yes they can be padlocks but I don't want easy access to outsiders and I don't want to go out in inclement whether to trouble shoot shit or swap over to generator.

    I have an outlet in my kitchen that my refrigerator is plugged into that is losing power and not tripping the breaker. I swapped it out and same issue. The GFCI to the left of that outlet works fine. Any suggestions?

    Great video. Only thing I might have added was an explanation of what to look for if the GFCI trips immediately after resetting it. Love the channel.

    Thanks a million for enlighting me of GFCI's place in affecting a series of outlets in the kitchen. That is the exact scenario playing out in my house. All I do as you suggested is reset it and all other outlets come back online. Almost rush out to buy undeeded testing equipment. Thanks again.

    Excellent video. Little did I know that there is something called a GFCI breaker. My breaker switch was in the middle position and I kept putting it to ON but it was not working. After watching your video, I was able to move it from the “BREAK” to “OFF” and then back to “ON”. Everything then worked magically

    Thank you! You fixed my issue. Woke up to a power surge and two outlets in a bedroom not working. Fuse box did show a breaker flipped so I pushed it on. Still didn’t work. Watched your video to realize… you push the breaker to “off” position first. THEN back on. Problem solved!!.

    I watch your videos frequently and I do enjoy watching them. Thank you. However in today’s circuit breakers ( or the breakers in my garage) they do not usually trip as your example states, when blown. So I now have an outlet and other items on the same circuit that do not work. I just acquired the Klein ET310 circuit breaker finder but my question is; will this help being the outlet has no power and will the transmitter work if the outlet has no power? I Hope so. Please provide an answer. Thank you.

    Great video! I have a question, what if these solutions including the GFCI replacement doesn’t work and the breaker keeps tripping? I’ve been having an issue with a breaker that keeps tripping, I already checked all outlets from that breaker and all of them are working fine. Any suggestions what can be the reason of it tripping even though everything seems to be working properly? Thanks in advance! 🙏🏼

    Ok I have a question. Today I came home from work my deep freezer in the garage was off. I reset the plug and it was working fine. A few minutes later I looked in my backyard. I have an above ground pool. The water level had decreased several inches due to the hose coming off of the pump. I unplugged the pump from the extension (it’s an outside extension cord). I filled my pool back up and plugged in the pump and it wasn’t working. I immediately unplugged it saw the socket had black markings around the holes and one of the prongs had sticky black residue on it. I went and got something else to plug into the socket and that item didn’t work. So I then plugged the extension cord with the pump into a plug inside my house and the pump is working. Also, this is very weird. I noticed a chunk of my patio gone. It stormed today about 230, 3 hours before I got home. Could it have been lightning? I would think it would have been much more damage if it was. It’s maybe 1-2 inches wide by an inch deep. The chunk of my patio that is missing isn’t close to the pump or plug. I’d say at least 6ft or more from where the chunk of concrete is missing. All of this can’t be coincidental, surely not. 🥺

    Hello Scott, I have two outside receptacles that mysteriously stopped working. House was built in 2019 and these are the outside receptacles that have the hinged plastic door over them. There is one GFCI circuit in the Garage which I have checked, and all the breakers in the panel box. Still no power.

    I have a different question, not germane to this specific video but for testing inverter power outlets and maybe UPS power outlets too. I was curious if this jump pack for my car, that also has electric outlets for appliances and other things with a power cord is grounded, and if so, how a ground could be "self contained" since it's a battery. When I checked with a light up circuit tester and a button to cause a GFCI to "trip" all 3 lights came on, and there was nothing that happened when there was a "trip". So I wonder... How safe are these against fires from shorts, or as a shock hazard, and how do we test that ?
    Great video though and thank you for posting. In one of my Mother's houses, she had GFCI in her lavatory. There was also a GFCI on her porch. She tripped the outlet in her lavatory and it never reset. I was attempting to replace it for her, but discovered there was no power all the way back. I was up in her attic trying to run it down. I never was able to.
    My dad, wanting to use his weed whacker plugged it into the porch and reset the breaker. Unbeknownst to Mother or me, and all at once, it was working again. No LED on these, because you know, the electric company wasn't THAT greedy or hadn't figured out how to charge us for an outlet we weren't using yet. I don't remember how it came about, but my Dad mentioned something about having to reset it, and then after he did, the lavatory outlet was working again. I opened it up and sure enough, some idiot had run the wires downstream, that landed in the lavatory, and put a GFCI in the lavatory AND wired it to the "protected" side on the porch. It was a good year before we ran that down and even planned on getting an electrician. But Chase Manhattan was threatening to make us homeless, so we never got that far. The house was sold not long after, so I left a note for the next homeowner. I didn't open up her wiring just because I didn't get that far yet.

    omg, you are such a lifesaver..my friend let us stay the weekend at her beach house which has older wiring and when I turned on the microwave it tripped the breaker and stopped power to three separate outlets including the fridge…I panicked as I felt horrible knowing such a nice gesture lead to me feeling like I messed up something in her home. This video helped me troubleshoot it and fix the problem…the breaker was indeed red and one flip of the switch fixed everything. Thnx so much!

    Should all my circuits fit evenly in the box, several are like crooked, like they are too big. Also, nothing was written inside the door on the list. Can't afford to have anyone come look at it. Lost power to a few outlets upstairs, a guest plugged in a space heater and tripped the circuit. We did a reset and turned it back on. But still no power. Looks like old knob and tube in the crawl space. Could there be an old in-line fuse? Lost power to the furnace once took forever to find the in-line fuse in between the floor joists in the basement. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    One of my standard outlet went out and I checked the power (Wire) to the receptacle, and it had no power. I decided to replace it with a GFCI receptacle and still the same thing. It has only two wires + ground. There are two other outlets in the same line which I have them as GFCI and they power off when I turn off the circuit breaker and power on, they even reset at the reset button okay. Am I missing something?
