  • Detroit:
"Detroit is the largest and most populous city in the U.S. state of Michigan, the largest U.S. city on the United States-Canada border, and the seat of Wayne County. The municipality of Detroit had a 2019 estimated population of 670,031, making it the 24th-most populous city in the United States." - Wikipedia.org
"The city became the 4th-largest in the nation in 1920, after only New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia with the influence of the booming auto industry. With the expansion of the auto industry in the early 20th century, the city and its suburbs experienced rapid growth, and by the 1940s, the city remained as the fourth-largest in the country. However, due to industrial restructuring, the loss of jobs in the auto industry, and rapid suburbanization, Detroit lost considerable population from the late 20th century to the present. Since reaching a peak of 1.85 million in the 1950 census, Detroit's population has declined by more than 60 percent."
"In 1903, Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company. Ford's manufacturing-and those of automotive pioneers William C. Durant, the Dodge Brothers, Packard, and Walter Chrysler-established Detroit's status in the early 20th century as the world's automotive capital. The growth of the auto industry was reflected by changes in businesses throughout the Midwest and nation, with the development of garages to service vehicles and gas stations, as well as factories for parts and tires."
    Dearborn:
"Henry Ford was born on a farm here and later established an estate in Dearborn, as well as his River Rouge Complex, the largest factory of his Ford empire. He developed mass production of automobiles and based the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company here. The city has a campus of the University of Michigan as well as Henry Ford College. The Henry Ford, the United States' largest indoor-outdoor historic museum complex and Metro Detroit's leading tourist attraction, is located here." - Wikipedia.org
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew enjoys an urban-suburban ride starting from Dearborn, Michigan. On a route of his own design, he wanders into Detroit catching sight of many buildings and complexes related to the auto industry, before heading over to Belle Isle followed by a look around downtown Detroit. The tour makes its way to the long-abandoned Packard Automotive Plant before calling it a day back in Dearborn. About 105kms / 65ish miles of randomness through Dearborn & Detroit.

That was awesome great job! As a lifelong Detroiter I know every place you filmed. Spent the 60's playing in Riverside park. My family and I used to walk across the Ambassador Bridge to picnic in Windsor. Great video thanks for the memories.

That was beautiful. You captured the vibe of the city very well, despite the pushback sure to come. Love seeing America through the eyes of a visitor on two wheels. Also, really beautiful bike.

You really surprised me with this video since I live in the Detroit area and have ridden my bikes extensively there along many of the roads you rode on. Did not know you were going to be in town. A real change from your usual rural gravel routes it was nonetheless entertaining and informative. A bit gritty perhaps but it is seen from the perspective of a non-Detroiter so it is warts and all. The Vorais Velodrome in the opening scene is a challenging ride by itself and is also the site of the Detroit Invitational Cyclocross races held in late Nov. and/or early Dec. Thanks for taking time to visit our city and hope you come back soon to ride some of our amazing and extensive SE Mich gravel roads.

Hi David, there are certain USA cities I plan to urban tour through, and Detroit has been on my list to visit for many, many years. I have a video of just me playing around at the Dorais Park velodrome coming out soon. I did ride out of Hastings, MI, the day after, home to Barry Roubaix... I rode the 105-mile course, video to come!

Wish i had known that you were in town it would have been nice to meet and have you over for a refreshment while in downtown Detroit. Wonderful video of the Detroit area and i was surprised that you took many of the same roads that i regularly ride. Unfortunately you visited Detroit during the pandemic and on a cool day. Please come back again under better times

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are awesome. It is his private collections. He collected trains. Real trains. They are inside the buildings. He also collected buildings. Thomas Edison’s laboratory, the Wright brothers bike shop etc... I lived in Detroit 14 years in the 1980s and 90s. It used to be the industrial center of the United States. Now pretty much burned down and boarded up. That is the Ambassador bridge. Leads to Windsor. The GM headquarters was originally built by Ford as a convention center and hotel.

@@GravelCyclist Jom, there's a lot to see in Detroit. From the Atlas Obscura worthy Heidelberg Project, to Eastern Market, to the Detroit Institute of Art, to the home of Motown, "Hitsville USA".
It's also home to Detroit Bikes, who build and fabricate their own bikes. And two large group rides *usually* Critical Mass and Slow Roll, but now we live in unusual times.

Great video! You passed by the construction site of the Gordy Howe International Bridge. When that opens, cyclists will be able to ride over to Windsor, Ontario toll free. Also, by the park near the Ambassador Bridge, you passed right by the only floating zip code in the U.S., the J. W. Westcott II which delivers mail to ships on the river. Just too much history to cover in one video. Thanks for posting!

I've only been in Detroit one time back in the 1970's. I got there at the end of December. It got down to -35F (-37.3C) that night.
My car froze up solid since it had antifreeze more appropriate for a Georgia winter.
It was too dang cold to do anything outside. There used to be a lot of neighborhood bars-each neighborhood represented a particular ethnic group.
I was not sad to leave after a month of such cold weather.

    • @GravelCyclist

Actually, the Rotunda building that burnt in '62 was 3 miles east of that point. That is the 'new' Rotunda Center, several smaller building with various jobs. The Stacked Building is the old Rouge Steel now AK Steel but FOMOCO still produces parts and the F150 on site.
The area with the old church is Old Delray. Mainly Hungarian and some Romanian enclaves. It is being bought out piecemeal to make way fo the new international Gordy Howe bridge to Canada.
I gotta say you covered a lot of territory for one video! Bike on.

Detroit was the Silicon Valley of the industrial age. The prosperity is evidenced by the miles upon miles of beautiful custom homes throughout the city. Many now are in ruins but others survived and are now being restored. Some areas like Indian Village and the Boston Edison district were well maintained all along and are still beautiful today. I ride my bike through Detroit often and it is refreshing to see the steady progress. Such great history at every turn. Nicest people I have ever encountered on a bike ride. It is a great cycling city.
