  • Join me and bike the Silver Comet Trail, a 61.5-mile rail trail located in western Georgia. Starting west of Atlanta and traveling to the Alabama/Georgia border, the Silver Comet Trail offers smooth biking and stunning scenery.
    The Silver Comet Trail is named for a passenger train route that ran from Alabama to New York City from the 1940-1960s. Once the rail line was abandoned in the 1980s, it was purchased and construction began on the bike trail in the 1990s. Today the Silver Comet Trail is widely known and a member of the Rail Trail Hall of Fame.

    I know it is knit picking but ya'll started in Mableton. The Beginning at Mile Marker 0 is 4 miles east of the the Silver Comet Bike shop. I enjoyed The video. I also found it amusing how the Cobb County section was so smooth and as soon as you crossed into Paulding county it changed to concrete thats is a little rougher. I used to Patrol the Cobb Section every day for the PD and really enjoyed meeting people from all over as well as regulars. On my off days I would ride from The caboose or Tara Drummond trailheads to the Braswell Mtn tunnel or Rockmart. I' have not been beyond Rockmart. I had planned to ride the entire length to Jax State but After I left the unit that patrolled the trail, I put away my bikes and haven't ridden since (nearly 12 years) I retired a while back and had planned to ride the southern tier which obviously didn't happen. I am looking at getting my old touring bike out and hitting the comet and getting back in a little better shape. I subscribed so I can watch some more of ya'lls videos and hopefully get some inspiration.. Happy trails

    I recently moved right next to the Chief Ladiga portion of the trail. Looking forward to exploring this beauty!

    There are bathrooms along the trail, and within a block or two of restaurants for water/drinks/food in many places. Sometimes there are fire stations near the Trail, and bike shops. Hiram has a fire station 1/2 block from the parking lot for the Silver Comet Trail. The Buddy System is not part of the rules. I sure wish it was.

      @@joshuadavid1630 I did 40 mile round trips all the time with my mountain bike, on the paved Olympic Discovery trail when I lived on the Olympic Peninsula, in WA state. Now I live next to the chief ladiga/Silver comet and it looks far easier, way less hills and mountains to climb. Street bike or mountain bike, either one would be great.

      I walked the Silver Comet Trail in a month by walking about 2 miles and then having someone pick me up. I did this in 2004 using the Buddy System. It was a lot more fun.

    I've ridden over 10k miles on the trail but I do not recognize the bridge over the water. Where is that? Beyond Cedartown?

    you never answer my post. but i will try again. i saw where ya'll biked the silver comet in one day. way to go. that's a metric century. ya'll said it took 2 days. so ya'll must have ridd'in back the next day. then you did the chief ladaga trail. i noticed how ya'll did not carry any gear for over night camping. you must be credit card touring staying in b&b's or motels. i am wondering becaus i am gonna bike the silver comet next week. i bike alot, and i can ave 12 with panniers and gear. that puts me doing the trail in 5 moving hrs. but i'll add 2 hrs for down time. then camp and ride back.let me know how ya'll did it. thanks

    Ive been looking forward to biking the full 95 miles of it but i dont know how much water i need to bring, like are there stores or "stops" where there are small towns on the trail for me to buy more? I also dont know how hard it will be too.

    • @NobleInventionBikeTouring
      @NobleInventionBikeTouring  4 роки тому +2

      There are fewer stops the further you get from Atlanta, obviously, but the driest section is from Rockmart to Cedartown. There is nothing between those towns. Generally 2-3 bottles should do you. I would rate the trail moderately difficult to easy. There is some elevation to it, so you are climbing for longer periods when riding east to west. It is paved though, so that puts it into the slightly easier category for me.

      The section through Paulding Forrest is desolate. I've encountered riders on the brink of dehydration in there.

      Noble the only two watering stations I can remember were in Dallas and at that depot you were at in Cedartown. Of course it’s been a couple of years.

      @@TKDZen1975 Hiram, at Mile Marker 15, there is a bathroom and sometimes a bike repair next to a fairly new large fire station. This is 2 city blocks from 10 to 20 eating places like Wendy's.

      @@rkgr2 There are cameras for safety in that area. Dallas has a Chamber of Commerce and a health department near the Trail.

    Is the road too rough for roller skates?

    • @CharlotteFairchild
      @CharlotteFairchild 3 роки тому

      I have seen many people on skates on the Silver Comet Trail. Motorized vehicles are the only mode of transportation that only police who patrol the Silver Comet Trail are allowed. I don't know about wheelchairs or scooters for the disabled.

      We started at the Smyrna end of the trail and did not ride into Atlanta itself. A list of Silver Comet trailheads can be found at www.silvercometga.com/silver-comet-map/silver-comet-map.shtml. You may also find some useful information at this site - bikesilvercomet.com/.

    What is mt trashmore? I can't find it on the map

    • @NobleInventionBikeTouring
      @NobleInventionBikeTouring  5 років тому

      Mt Trashmore is the colloquial name for a hill on the trail between Rockmart and Cedartown. The trail runs near a landfill which creates a "Mt Trashmore". It's the only significant elevation on the trail. Once past the top you get some nice views of the farmlands toward Cedartown, and some nice downhill.

    • @CharlotteFairchild
      @CharlotteFairchild 3 роки тому

      The elevation can be difficult for people with heart problems. Most of the Silver Comet Trail has a 2% grade, so is nearly level. On the sides of the trail in many places there is a steep incline, so be careful when you leave the pavement.

    • @NobleInventionBikeTouring
      @NobleInventionBikeTouring  2 роки тому

      The Silver Comet Trail is just over 60 miles. The time it would take you to ride would of course depend on your speed and logistics.

    Would a mountain bike suffice?

    • @NobleInventionBikeTouring
      @NobleInventionBikeTouring  3 роки тому +3

      You can certainly ride a mountain bike on the trail. It will be much slower than a bike with narrower/smoother tires of course. But if that's the bike you have, ride it:) Getting out there is the most important thing.

    • @rkgr2
      @rkgr2 3 роки тому +2

      I've ridden it many times with a mountain bike. If you can find road tires to fit your wheels, big improvement.
