Early chicago is pure fire. The loss of Terri they lost something. I agree with those listen to the studio version at ur leisure, you will be impressed

Man, as good as this was I was hoping you would do the studio version, because they do an extended outro that's a percussion only jam that you would love. The Tanglewood performance of "25 or 6 to 4" is the one you need to see! Loved the reaction, though.
Yeah I'm not crazy about this version, a little too slow and does not have the power of the studio version. Agree on the live 25 or 6 to 4, that's a good one.

There are several Tanglewood clips out there, 25 or 6 to 4, I am a Man, Color my World. I know you have already done reactions to many Chicago songs, but you will see and experience their true musicianship with any cut from Tanglewood

@@annieh5479 The actual quote is even better. During an interview with Rolling Stone, the interviewer asked Jimi, "What's it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" He answered, "I don't know. Go ask Terry Kath."

There will never be a replacement for Terry Kath. Jimi Hendrix sat in the back of one of their gigs, and walked out saying "He's a better guitar player than me - maybe the best I've ever heard," or words to that effect. The story has been twisted and changed over the years, but the base story is absolutely true. Hendrix (I loved the man and his artistry), acknowledged publicly that Terry Kath (Lead Guitarist and vocalist for Chicago in their first incarnation), was both an experimental guitar mechanical genius (something Hendrix did, too), and an absolute master of the guitar. This is no slam against anyone - just one professional admiring the technical achievements of another.
Because Terry was often buried in horns, he didn't stand out as well - but when he cut loose - my god, he was faster and accurate - and soulful.
There is a documentary about him: "The Terry Kath Experience," which was done by his (now grown-up) daughter - well worth finding. He was another lost-in-time, master of his craft, who was just starting to achieve the notoriety he deserved. He truly was one of the best guitarists we have ever had the fortune to listen to.
The drummer (who STARTED the original Chicago, and brought in Terry Kath, is the only surviving member of the original group (although friends, roadies, etc. are still around). We are (and have) lost, and are losing, so many great artists that just got run over by the musical history bus - and deserved much better.

Beginnings was my wedding song 50 years ago. Their first album CHICGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY is a must listen.

Just You 'n' Me was our wedding song in 1996. Chicago's first three albums, all DOUBLE LPs - unheard of at the time for a new band to do, are phenomenal.
Young love and what a great writer Robert Lamm is. "And when I kiss you, I feel a thousand different feelings, a cover of chills all over my body...and while I feel them, I quickly try to decide which one... I should try to put into words, did you ever try to put it into words"
Three lead singers and a horn section and a fire breathing guitar. Nothing like it.
This entire Tanglewood show is on UA-cam. It is simply fantastic. 25 or 6 to 4, Make Me Smile and I'm a Man standout. This song is a perfect example of why I loved this band so much. Note the past tense here. They really started to lose their edge in the later 1970's. Terry Kath died tragically by accident and the group manager handed the keys to Peter Cetera and said go make a bunch of awful, sappy ballads.
Please don't blame Peter it was the new record company that did that.
@Paul Sad wasn't it, To see CTA and Lighthouse from Canada both with the same crazed style with a horn section was an honour. Sadly Chicago became pulp pop. Lighthouse just raised the bar, and continue to this day blow the doors off the place Live, saw them again just before COVID hit, and Skips kid is as damn good as Skip was on the skins, maybe better.
I agree but I try so hard at my age now, to say "Not my cup of tea" instead of "that sucks." It ain't always easy! Those sappy ballads are multi-million sellers, well-produced and for a lot of somewhat younger fans, fabulous songs. I can't listen to them, either, but I really try not to call good music that isn't my taste "awful" -- I did that for years. I really miss the Chicago music up to Terry Kath's tragic death. And that's how I try to say it.

The Band Leonid and Friends cover all of Chicago's songs and they are fantastic, live in the studio.
I can't recommend these guys enough either, as their covers of Chicago are stellar! . Be sure to listen to Chicag's studio version of beginnings also as it is so precise and clean.
They are like Terry never left... awesome can't come close to describe how well they cover Chicago

You must listen to 25 or 6 to 4 from this concert Live At Tanglewood, the song is taken to whole other level Terry Kath really goes off on the guitar and shows why Jimi Hendrix said that Terry Kath was his favorite guitarist, same can be said for I’M A Man from this concert the drummer really goes off on that song, well worth seeing live, you can thank me later
They do a great I'm a Man live also. Leonid and friends from Moscow play this and other Chicago songs, they are fantastic

The first time I saw Chicago was about a week before this performance at the Hollywood Bowl. Thanks for taking me back. And, yeah, that's what real musicians sound like.

Yeah , start with Chicago's first album : Chicago Transit Authority and 'Introduction' .
Up to and including Album #7 , this blend of perfection is consistently realized .
One of the best bands in the best era at their best.
The whole show @ Tanglewood is amazing. This is VERY early in their career so to see the joyous way they performed is the best. I know that you have already reacted to 25 or 6 to 4 but the version from the Tanglewood is amazing. You will see the guitar player Terry Kath just kill it. Highly recommend!

James Pankow or Jimmy Trombone on the trombone is an incredibly talented man. I find his horn arrangements to be down right sexy! At 75, he's still out there doing his thing. He's only gotten better with age.
I consider the end of the studio version of this song, starting when they repeat "only the beginning" many times as one of the finest moments in music history.

The vibe was always a summers evening with friends and wine.
Absolutely Love Chicago! Earth Wind and Fire! Basically anything with an amazing horn section.
I saw the two bands in concert together. At first I thought it was on odd pairing, but they performed a few songs together and blended really well.

I was able to see Chicago in person on April 18th, 1971. They had the original members including Terry Kath. There live performance was brilliant...as close to studio perfect as I have ever witnessed. It was at what was known as Pacific Memorial Stadium, a football stadium and I was sitting maybe 30 yards back. Most wonderful concert I have ever been to. It was like being with your family at a picnic...everybody was passing around whatever they brought and sharing. Food, wine beer or whatever! And the music was spectacular! They opened with Wake Up Sunshine and followed by playing most of the songs following as they were on Chicago II.
I live about a half hour from Tanglewood. Last show I saw there was the Pete Townsend orchestral Quadrophenia production.
"25 Or 6 To 4" live in the Tanglewood show is a whole other world experience. Terry Kath's (r.i.p.) guitar playing is LEGENDARY. Same with Danny Seraphine on that drum kit. In their formative years Danny also impressed the legendary drummer Buddy Rich. James (Jimmy) Pankow is the trombone player.
You really need to check our the studio performance of "Poem 58" on their debut album when they were starting as "The Chicago Transit Authority". Blues & funk influence throughout and Kath is a MONSTER on the guitar on that track. You'll need an icepack to cool down with after listening to THAT!

Really great band, saw them in Toronto on my 16th birthday.
This recording is a good example of their live sound(the quality is pretty good too).
I get a bigger kick out of a well played trombone than I do from any other horn. That makes me whatever it makes me.
On a solo Appalachian Trail hike, took a break and crashed Tanglewood, Boston Pops were playing, place is magical, one of a kind acoustics...
I live about a half hour from Tanglewood.
I hiked the region from 16-21 years old, early 70s, there's a black pine forest not far from you, a memory I use to reset myself...
I love the Berkshires. All that being said, my favorite outdoor venue is Red Rocks. Tanglewood is second.

One of the few bands that are as good or better LIVE than the studio. Circle back to 25 or 6 to 4 here if you get a chance. And "I'm A Man". Thrilling to watch them live back then.

i love seeing live footage of bands playing their songs... you should look for "make me smile"... terri kath has an amazing baritone voice, and still hits some great higher notes....
As a teenager, I remember listening to this song, on our tv/stereo console. It was the most beautiful sound. I almost wore the wax off this album.

The fact is, every music fan needs to listen to their first three albums, then see how well those guys re-created the songs live, on-stage. Thie concert has some of the very best audio for live performances.
This early Chicago was actually called the Chicago Transit Authority. The shortened it to just Chicago after the 2nd album because they were being sued by the actual C.T.A. for using the name.

Chicago 1970 was my first concert, I saw them at Saratoga Performing Arts Center just a couple days before the Tanglewood concert. Wish I had gone to the Tanglewood one too :D
Chod, one of the best lead trombone players is Troy Andrew’s, aka Trombone Shorty from New Orleans. I saw him play in the dba club on Frenchman St a couple years ago. He played for neatly 2 hours straight without a break. It was absolute fire. Everyone in the club was on their feet rockin their tush off the whole time. Make time to check him out!

Robert Lamm vocals here, so now you've heard Peter, Terry, and Robert vocals. This whole Tanglewood show is crazy good! Check out that "25 or 6 To 4" Terry goes off! There are two totally separate Chicagos for me, with Terry and without.

Everything off of transit authority is magnificent. Listen to the studio version of this. So meticulously performed and produced. Saw them a couple years ago. The horn section is unparalleled. :)

I always thought Terry and Robert had similar vocal ranges when I was younger I thought Terry sung this song.
Terry sings colour my world and after Terry's death Robert had the honor of singing Terry's song.
He dedicates it to Terry when he sings it in concert.
Terry's part in the forming of Chicago's sound in 1970s was critical to their success.
Vocally in the harmonies and his monstrous guitar solos.
His death was sudden and tragic and totally avoidable.
Drugs played a huge role in how it played out.
Terry was an expert at handling his guns 🔫 but apparently he forgot he had not cleaned his chamber and was playing with it while high.
After an all night drug session, he was fooling around with it when he roadie said hey don't play with that.
Terry said oh don't worry it's not loaded pointing the nozzle to his head and pulled the trigger.
His death was instant.
There was a bullet in the chamber.
I cry when I think of how stupid the whole thing is.
Completely ludicrous.
Terry kath was gone.
Chicago never recovered.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

I am wondering if anyone noticed Robert Lamm giving a nod to an old Barbara Mason song? Between 3:05 and 3:12 after singing the words "mostly I'm silent,.....silent" he backs away from the microphone and sings, "I don't even know how to hold your hand." It isn't as loud as the rest of the song, but you can make it out. The song was called, Yes, I'm Ready and the second verse goes like this:

Best concert i went to at 17 in houston 82...i stood right under the sax player...i wanted to go to Journey's concert at the astrodome, mom said no...darn it.

For more Chicago songs you should consider their love song, "If You Leave Me Now", and since I know you love the keys, you NEED to listen to "Colour My World", with one of the best piano melodies ever!
Listen to "Poem 58" from their debut album (Chicago Transit Authority). Blows away the other guitarists of the era. If Chicago had been a trio he would have been hailed as a guitar god.

The entire concert is amaaaaazing!! I’ve seen it so many times! Every member of this band had the talent and the training to be what they were-simply the best of the best…James Panko on trombone, member of Songwriters Hall of Fame!!!

It's possible Robert Lamm, the vocalist on this and keyboard player, was a bit flustered - Lee Loughnane is the trumpet player and James Pankow is the trombone. That was a song Lamm wrote from their first album. One of the older live tracks that is often overlooked - In the Country from their second album. Great vocals by Terry Kath and Peter Cetera and the guitar work is spectacular.
Since you are going down this rabbit hole you may as well check out 25 or 6 to 4. Wire your jaw to your chin so it isn't wide open during the guitar solo. Nice job with this one.

This is one of those times where the studio version is superior.....especially for someone like yourself who really appreciates percussion the outro is amazingly good. If you don’t react to it at least listen for your own pleasure.
I believe you have covered 25 or 6 but you REALLY should check it out from tanglewood. They are trying to repair the drummers cymbal and Terry Kath is like well I'm going to play guitar 🎸🎶 it is absolutely My favorite chicago live.

The trombone player is James "Jimmy" Pankow, superior musician. Beginnings is one of my favorite songs by them. You need to check out, "Does Anybody Know What Time it is". Any of the old music is great.

Was fortunate to see Chicago play at our campus while I was in college in the late 1960’s. I’ve loved them ever since especially their early work.
Agree with both Rocca, Spazz and Jodan4 on their comments. If you like drums, then the studio version is the place to be on Beginnings. Watchinhg Terry Kath on lead guitar is mesmerizing and Leonid and Friends are quite amazing. Good all around!

In the album greatest hits this song just dies off with a beautiful Reggie repeation.... it sounds tribal.
